This was an option last year and I was wondering if it would be possible to add this year. I really loved it :(

If not that, could we get a selection capability that will allow us to select by more than one criteria? ...and of course include word count as one of the selection criteria.

I agree - I was so excited when I saw that the Author search was back - and then woof ... disappointment.

Also, does everyone else just get two results per page? Or is that just my settings?

Thanks for your hard work, Russ - but maybe just a teeny bit more ..... :)

Adding my voice to this, it was the first thing I looked for. I like finding out what company I'm in. ;-)

The issue with two authors per search page is resolved.

There is currently no sorting on the search results at all. I, too, would like to see that enabled.

I was just coming over to ask for 'sort by wordcount' too. It's very helpful for people who are looking for short term goals. You find out who is above you on the list and write enough to get past them, and then work your way up the list. I've suggested this to many people in the past (along with it being in my NaNo for the New and the Insane book), and people have always found it helpful.

Any hope?

I just want to add my voice to those asking TPTB to prioritize the "sort by wordcount" option to the Author Search. It's one of the most important tools for me. Thanks!

I'll add my voice to this, as well. This is my first NaNo, and I was looking forward to a little private 'friendly' competition via the sort-by-wordcount feature. If possible, please bring it back. :)

Until we get this option back, those of you looking for a little competitional motivation (ooh, look mah, I made up a WORD) can check the REaching 50k forum. There's a TON of shoutouts, and I'm sure you can find someone in your range. :)

Wow, it wasn't until I skipped over to Reaching 50K thread and found people whose word counts were ahead of mine that I realized my sense of urgency working on the novel was gone.

The sort by word count (especially the *regional* sort by word count) was a *major* motivational tool for me last year, and now I feel like I'm floundering aimlessly.

Any chance to bring it back soon?

cheers,

jules

I'd like to see it too! Please.

Pretty please.

And a cherry.

here's a suggestion:

if it would freak the site out too much to have every individual person sorting the list, why not have the default list come up sorted? Would it be too much trouble to just store the list sorted by word count, so that whenever anyone goes to the author's page, the list is already sorted?

You know, that would seem to me to be the easiest answer -- though it should proboably go from high to low, because there will be a number of people with 0 word counts, and not because those who aleady have high word counts need to be at the top.

Yes, I think that's a great idea, Zette, to sort from the highest word count. Anyone would know approximately where to find themselves based on their own word counts.

So, any word on this? It would be nice to have some confirmation from staff or something so we know if this is happening.

I'm starting to feel like a pest, but I just thought I'd bump this thread back up, to try to get more support for the idea.

Possible? Not possible?

I'm sure I don't speak for myself when I say that ordering the default list, giving people an idea of where they stand, would motivate quite a few in these last couple of weeks of NaNo.

Thanks for your consideration.

If it is, it will be after Russ implements the "winning" module. It's not high on the list of priorities at the moment as most of the other items on the hit list are to keep the site running smoothly during the all-important verification period.

Right now it appears to be ordered by 'Date Joined' which really isn't helpful for anything important with the site. I do understand about getting the verification part set up properly, though. I wonder how the database is set up in general, though, and if it's an easy choice to just say sort by word count rather than by date joined.

Ah, but I see a problem. Date Joined is static, and the database would not change at all after it goes up. Word count would mean it would change every time someone updated their count. That could be a problem in a site that is already having overload problems -- though I suspect those problems have lessened for a bit as people drop out. Verification is going to hit, though, and that will be a problem again.

It's just that the word count function has been a wonderful incentive for people to keep going, because they can see the little jump it would take for them to make it up the list a ways. It's odd, but sometimes that's enough to keep going.

I agree, I know several people who keep their wordcounts up by jumping up the list in steppingstones, or seeing how far ahead of the competition they are. The latter part works with buddies, the former not so much.

However, as priorities go, I think making sure verification won't kill the site is more important. I am glad to see staff (thanks cybele!) posting on this note - makes it feel less like the thread has been ignored.

Maybe if it was only updated once a day at midnight? (Just a thought.) That way people would still have a list to work up, even though it wouldn't be exactly current.

Another vote for this. Please please please. It's such a good motivator.

I would be happy with results that had been cached the previous midnight, as per Zette's suggestion.

If not for this year, then next year? I'm another one who uses this tool as a motivator. I've really missed it this year.

I'm sure it will be at some point. Rest assured that Russ has most likely seen this topic, and has added the feature to his to-do list. There's just a lot ahead of it, and it will get there eventually.

Just thought I'd add another reply to bump this back up.

It seems that everyone's validating with no major problems....any chance of getting a list sorted by wordcount?

It would be really great for last minute motivation. Even if the results are not up to the minute accurate.

Thanks,

Since the month is almost over, would it be possible for the final list to be sorted by descending word count? I'm interested in seeing how many people made it signifigantly over 50k, like 75k, 100k, 200k and so on.
