Woo!!! CONGRATS!! How awesome is it that now that you did it, you did it in SEVENTEEN FREAKIN' DAYS? How far in the story are you - did you actually get to the end, or is there more writing to do?
I'm going to wrap this thing up tonight so I can be freed... to spend the rest of the month writing papers. D'oh! But hell - the novel-writing was one hell of a good primer.
[EDIT:] Okay, NOW I'm with you. X-D Though I still have about 3.5K of my original concept novel included in this wordcount... and I still have some story to get through before it'll be finished. So I will be picking away at this a little more as the month goes on. But I am at 50K and I feel fine. And now I sleep like the dead.

I'm not near the end of the story, but I'm near the end of what I had planned for it. Anything after what I had planned would just be written on the fly, and blindly, too. I think I made the wordcount goal at just the right spot for me to be able to stop writing before the story became more of a chore and less enjoyable.

That's awesome. I had the beginning, middle and end of this thing figured out, but to my dismay I realized that there was a whole bunch of other STUFF in the gaps there that I needed to think up on the fly. Some of it is kind of rough, but some good ideas and scenes came out of it, so it was definitely worth slogging through.

You guys are unbelievable. How did you do it? How many hours did you write every day? And does it have something to do with living in Saint John? Does the smell of oil refineries spur you to dizzying heights of creativity? :)

It's not so unbelievable in my case. Half of what I wrote was introspective crap. I described it to Cass as "writing on LiveJournal, only for credit."
I wrote only a couple of hours a day some days, most of that while at work. Working at an inbound call centre where one isn't allowed to use the Internet for anything but email and work-related stuff can be a big boost to motivation, mostly because there's nothing else to do.

I probably wrote for about two hours a day, on average; my unofficial goal every day was 3K words, but my minimum (which I achieved every day!) was 1,700. Throw in a couple of 5K days and one glorious 7K day, and here I am!
I am lucky in that this draft is basically stream-of-consciousness thoughts of my main character at this point. I'm really glad I did this, though, because I've had a lot of ideas about how to flesh it out and explore some different themes within this context.
I also was scared into writing it fast, because I now have three big papers to write for school, and they're going to take, like, ALL of my time. All of it. Seriously. So it's good to have the novel out of the way.
You're doing awesome, though! Keep on truckin', you'll get there before long and it'll be sweeeeet.

Thanks for the encouragement, Cass! It will be sweet, though I don't think I'll be finished the novel when I reach 50K.
I also write about 2 hours a day, most days, or rather I sit my butt in the chair for at least that long. But sometimes I have to sit and stare at the screen to figure out what happens next in the novel. Then there are the moments when there is a question that I simply *must* have answered before I write another word, and I end up surfing the web for a half an hour.
Things like that slow me down. Another thing that slows me down is my body's intolerance for long stays in front of the computer. After a while, every muscle starts to bunch up and hurt. I have a software to remind me to stretch every 15 minutes. That helps a bit but doesn't negate the need to just get away from the computer after a while.

Woohoo!! Congrats folks!
KXSakuraba, you're more than welcome to attend the "Thank God It's Over" party, which will probably be sometime relatively soon-ish. I'm still in school mode for this weekend but I'll be sending out an email / posting here with details soon.

I'm across the line. I'm glad it's over, but I enjoyed this year's much more than previous year's. And I don't think it's because I'm away from home.
Congratulations to the entire crew!
Cheers
Richard
