I'm making this a separate thread so that I don't have to copy and paste my posts over and over again :p
Talea has set up an IRC channel which we're going to be using in the evenings for word wars, so if you want to give them a try, pop along in the evening (probably between 9pm-12 or so to start, off, but we'll see how things go and if there are people around at other times, tec.)
#my-chan on irc.dal.net
HELP GUIDE !
IRC:
I use mIRC. There are tons of other clients. I'm not listing them all here, because I don't use them.
(You don't have to pay for it, ignore that part. Or be responsible and donate or whatever, I don't really care.)
Connecting:
Go to the options dialog, put in a username in the top section (it's called Connect) type in something random in the full name / email sections (don't put your real one there, there's no point.) then pick DALnet from the servers list in the tab below. That should be enough to get you there (yeah it connects slowly.)
Then once you're connected, close the silly channels window that automatically pops up, and type:
/join #my-chan
Voila. I'll try and sit in there when I'm around, but if no one's there at a set time, that just means that no one's around at the moment.

I can only echo lyrical_liar - awesome! Now that I'm finally underway with my nano a few good word wars should help me improve my word count.

1863's guide for mIRC is great for windows, but unfortunately doesn't work on MACs - however Ircle is a great program does exactly the same thing.
You can download it from
http://www.ircle.com
Once you've downloaded the program and opened it up 4 boxes should come up on your screen (I'm using OS X but I presume it is similar on all of the mac ircle downloads).
One of them should have "connections" written up the top of it in the task bar. At the bottom of the box it should have "Edit" - click on that and you can make your own username and put in your full name (but it doesn't have to be real, and probably shouldn't be because anyone can see it) and then click ok.
Then go to the "servers" and click on that (its just below the Edit button). Scroll down to the D section - find Dal in the left hand column then follow down until you find irc.dal.net 7000. Click on that so its highlighted, then click add, then click select.
You can then click connect (to the left of the edit button on that box)
Then go to commands right up the very top of the screen, click on Join then type in "#my-chan" then go.
Voila you should be in the chat!
Hope that makes some sort of sense to all you mac users! :)

If ircle isn't working, Colloquy is another free irc client for OS X.

Thanks for this.
Found an extra 1400 words last night just by logging into IRC and not saying much.

People do sleep at times, you know. I was attempting to buck that trend, but I had an accidental nap on my couch and missed it all. Must be more awake tonight.

I must bump this thread to remind people to do this. Its an awesome way to focus and crank out the words... if you manage to ignore me on IRC and my waving of shiny things and impersonatinos of an abacus.
There were testimonials flying last night, and word counts, ohmygawd. Tryptich? Cranking out 1000 words every half hour? Dang..
So yes. Last week, its a rush to Friday. Get yourself into IRC aroun 8.30 for pre word war drinks.. and then write like yer ass was on fire!

And he's an abacus because we can count on him *nods*
*rotfl*
seriously - join in - Wonderdog and I will try not to distract things too much during the wars!
Oh!

I can't be there on Thursday T-T

I'm bumping this because everyone who's come along says that it's helped added a lot to their counts and it's great to see people achieving so much!
And congratulations for last night Magik reaching 50k, and Liz, Trip and Lollie jumping up the way up to 40k!

Thanks :) I'm aiming for 50k tonight. Damn, Liz, you beat me.. unfair advantage, I say! :P
Anyone who needs the extra word count boost, support, motivation, or just comic relief, come and join the word wars tonight. They're definitely worthwhile. :)
