a teenage girl joins an acting program, makes friends, deals with her parents, and falls in love with the star actor there.

as simply put as possible.

is is mainstream or junior chick lit.? i don't know. it sounds really chick lit.-y, but lots of serious life things happen, so i was wondering if it might be mainstream. also there are elements of other genres appearing here and there.

Books can fit into several genres at once and don't have to be specific to one. Actually, yours sounds a little young adult to me. But big deal -- tell the story and let the genre fall where it may.

Sounds very Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants...so whatever that category it. It's chick-litty, but the girls deal with serious issues.
