I couldn't find us another city to challenge, so it's an internal challenge among the 207 or so of us this year (Yay! Broke 200 members in the local group!)

Thanksgiving is over; now it's time to give thanks for 6 more days of writing left. Hey, that's about 20% of your time; write 5 times as fast as you should have been writing, and you're there!

Your challenge: Pick a 24-hour period and write like crazy. Post your results here. At least one winner gets a prize from yours truly (pickup or delivery to be arranged at a later date). Multiple entries encouraged--just so they're not overlapping, and once you've posted a time, you can't reuse some of those same hours. Entries must be posted within 3 hours of completion; e.g., write from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday and post your result no later than 9 p.m. Tuesday for credit. Kind of like the all-time high scores on pinball machines ... and a pinball machine isn't a bad metaphor for this experience right around now, is it?

NOTE: 500-word bonus to anyone who hosts a write-in during their 24-hour challenge period. When you post your results, note that you've added your 500 words.

EVERYONE: Post your results, even if you're not a "new high score"--inspirational to all of us to see that others are trying, isn't it?

Write on! (a nod to Wayne's World, I think)

Cool! I'll play this game. I've hardly written anything since Tuesday, but in the five days leading up to that I wrote 15,000 words.

I totally know that winning is possible, and I'm headed for that goal. Intermediate goal, be on track with my word count by Monday. Will post my best 24 hours, or start posting each 24-hour period, maybe. :)

Thanks, AJ!

Good luck to you, Megan/Jennifer (?). I hope I inspired at least one lost soul! If you're on the Mesa, perhaps I can drop by with some stickers for this year (that's this year's goodies for me to give away) when I'm out for a bike ride. That, by the way, is the prize for the writing challenge--along with some stuff from prior years. Anyone I see at a write-in gets this year's stickers, and I've given some to Chad to give away as well. I'm trying to make it to a few more events, but my schedule has been crazy, particularly the last week. I just finished working for a desperate doctoral student (so desperate that he kept offering to pay me bonus time on top of bonus time, but I just couldn't do it to him) the last two days, 17 hours. It was quite brutal editing work. I think I logged all the hours; I kept getting interrupted, and on projects like that I usually bill by the word, not the hour. I made a good guess at it, and I'm happy with the paycheck, so all's well--but I'm exhausted!

Happy writing!

A. J.

Darn! I wrote 4,695 words yesterday, but I didn't know they had to be posted within 3 hours, so I'm posting now. Anyway, it was an amazing writing day. :-)

Consider it posted--add the 24-hour time period, and note that you are adding a 500-word bonus for hosting a write-in during that time. The rules weren't posted clearly or consistently.

And I hold fiat power--all rules subject to change! Bwahahahahah!

The 24-hour period in question was 12:40 AM on November 26 to 12:40 AM, November 27, and I'm adding my 500-word bonus for hosting a write-in during that period.

Unless someone posts more than 5,195 words for a 24-hour period, we have a winner in Emiko! I expected someone to go ballistic with 10,000+. Heck, if my back didn't hurt and I wasn't so danged tired, I might give it a try in the last two hours. I'm a pretty fast typist ...

If you have a high word count, post it--preferably within 3 hours of finishing, so we have 5 hours left, but I'll give a bit of leeway with everyone celebrating and the boards possibly being slow.

Anyway, Emiko is well-deserving. Whoever ends up winning, drop me an e-mail at writerdude@yahoo.com with a mailing address for your prize(s) (as yet to be fully determined, depending in part on how many posts go up). It's all in the spirit of the thing, anyway, and congratulations to everyone who blasted out a good week.

Hmm. My posts tend to run long, and I'll have 39 of them with this one. I'll bet I have more than 2,000 words in posts alone! Must consider writing a novel in post form ...

We have a winner! I thought there'd be a last-minute report of someone with an amazing 15,000-word day, but nearly 5,000 is great, Emiko. Congratulations!

As for prizes . . . I need a mailing address for you. I've seen you at write-ins, so you have this year's stickers, which were the primary prize (yay!?). I also have some no-longer-available NaNoWriMo pencils (with a year on them) and one pen (labeled Magical Pen of Wonder, I believe). I have plenty of lapel (or backpack, or wherever) pins as well, and some undated NaNoWriMo participant stickers. Just tell me what interests you and send me that address, and your fine parting gifts will be in the mail. (Sorry, I just had a Bob Barker moment ...)

Congratulations on your word-heavy day and another purple winner designation!
