I've been seeing lots of media reports on NaNoWriMo (the most recent was a great video report on the BBC News website this morning ... hurray for our British brothers and sisters of the NaNo!) ... it occurred to me that we ought to contact Kristie at the Everett Herald and have her do a feature next year ... we could invite her to a Write-in or two, and get some cool exposure for our local area novelists!

I've emailed Kristi at the Herald ... I'm sorry I didn't think of this sooner, but if it's too late for her for this year, I've put a bug in her ear about ScriptFrenzy, and will make sure she's up to speed before next November for NaNoWriMo!! I told her about the write-in tonight at the Library, so who knows, maybe she'll show up!

Our story has been passed along to Julie Muhlstein, who's very interested and would like to write up something for Sunday's paper. She says she probably can't make it out to the write-in tonight, but asked me a couple of questions ... since this is about us as a regional group, I'd like to get answers from everybody (who wants to be included):
She wanted a rough idea of what my novel is about, and if I'd ever written a novel before. It might be good to include how many times you've done this, and why you do it.

I'm going to call her and see if I can get her some answers tomorrow ... so step up and give me some good stuff!!

Hope to see some of you tonight?!

Wow. That's really cool!

I've no idea what the deadline on a Sunday paper article is, but we've also got the Friday write-in at Alfy's (I'll be there) and hypothetically a party on Saturday!

As for answers...

My book's a satirical piece about the mental health care system and is (so far) titled "Treat and Street: A comedy of terrors". My MC is the youngest of four adult siblings caught in the middle of a power struggle over the family's international corporation. My MC (hypothetically) begins as somewhat uncaring and cold (and running an HMO). When he pulls a power play by forcing power of attorney over their father, his siblings take revenge by committing him to a psych ward where he learns a) it can be *very* difficult to convince people that you're sane once they think you're not, and b) medical insurance for mental illness is inadequate and woefully incomparable to that for physical illness. It gets a little strange and the ending is gruesome and tragic... though I'm far from getting there yet.

This is my 4th Nanowrimo and will be the second one that I've won (knock on wood). I've written one novel outside of Nano, so in total I've got two finished novels, one about to be 50,000 words (but not finished) and 2... um, wait. Does the one with the dragon count? dang. Anyway, more than 3 unfinished. :-P

As for why... I was told about Nano in 2004 in the last week of October. Short notice, but I had just written easily 75k+ in two weeks. I keep doing it because I'm a glutton for punishment and the self-enforced discipline to just sit down and write gets me back to my writing at least once a year... otherwise I'm just to busy. My friends and family now know to make allowances for November. Besides, when else are your characters allowed to run away with the show to such extent that you just have to kill them all? Nano's got less attachments.

Yup, I'm long-winded, but I've been doing this thing where you're supposed to use lots of words to tell.... oh wait. That's this. hehe.

Cool! I'll pass your comments along.
I talked with Julie on the phone, and she's going to drop by the library tonight for a few minutes. I'll find out then about the deadlines ...
and what's the deal with the Saturday party? I was just thinking yesterday we should celebrate TGIO ... then come to find out it's a regular event!

THIS IS FREAKIN' A*W*E*S*O*M*E NEWS!!!

Add me, dude, to the comment section, bro, absolutely.

This is my first Nano. Also, dude, this is my first novel. It's a Sci-Fi/Rock & Roll fable, called COSMIC RAY. It's about a future America, where all the children have been locked away in extermination camps, by a rogue government computer. I have been collecting notes on it, man, since 1992. (I am not kidding! 1992!!! . . . I have over 500,000 words, in NOTES!) I'd tried writing the novel a couple of times, but always, everytime, I got STUCK. Until Nano! Now I have a completed First Draft! (YEAH, BABY!!!)

I am already plotting my next novel, man, for next year's Nano!

Seriously, dude. NanoWrimo saved my LIFE.

Peace out, and give my love 'n hugs to Julie Muhlstein, she RAWKS!
:)
