Dylan smiled quietly, and then set off walking. I thought that she was going back home, or into hibernation, or something. I started to follow, but Dylan turned and shook her head. I took Cliff Brooks' hand and we watched her, walking, walking, walking. I started to cry. Beside me, Cliff Brooks' eyes were wet with tears, too.
The sun brightened the sky, and she kept right on, walking, walking, walking. We could see her reflected in the dampness of the sand, the red of the sun staining it like blood, and still she walked. The sun became brighter, and it rose above the horizon, a solid flaming globe, something that she had not seen for years.
She stopped, turned to the sun, and looked it right in the face.
Then Dylan exploded.
