I brought these over from the other post:
Here's the ferry schedule:
From Balfour, the ferry leaves at: 6:30 a.m., 8:10 a.m., 9:50 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:10 p.m., 2:50 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6:10 p.m., 7:50 p.m., 9:40 p.m.
From Kootenay Bay, the ferry leaves at: 7:10 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 10:40 a.m., 12:20 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:40 p.m., 5:20 p.m., 7 p.m., 8:40 p.m., 10:20 p.m.
Bring printed highlights of your novel, or the whole thing as you prefer.
*With whatever carpooling arrangements, meet and get on the ferry at Balfour, I think it is (we'll need to check schedule for when)
*Even if it's the little ferry, we can squish in together somewhere and read each other's work
*Meet Katero at Crawford Bay and escort her back, visiting and reading each other's work (it's tough to read with visiting going on and there will be plenty of time for it as we soak our bones)
*soak away at Ainsworth, probably having something to eat at the restaurant later (I'm always hungry when I come out of there!)
So, are we looking at 11:30 to meet at Balfour or 1:10? 11:30 gets a little tricky for us church people, but exception can be made if 1:10 seems like it's a little late to get rolling. I think it's going to be a hoot to go on the ferry just to go on the ferry.
Regarding LangsVSAinsworth restaurant, there isn't very much of a difference cost-wise, (with a family of 5, A&W costs the same as Gabriels) it just depends on how much you order. So really it's a matter of preference. I think I remember Lang's having seating that can't be changed around, and we'd have a hard time sitting together. I've really enjoyed the camaraderie of this group, so I'm in favour of dinner at Ainsworth. Close, convenient, and tables big enough for all.
That however is just one vote, so by all means cast your own!

I am so glad you guys are swinging with the info here. I'm only touching base here as I'm really trying to FINISH the novel in the next -gulp- days!
December 9th works for me and whatever times.
Notes to clarify.
- We will ALL go as walk on passengers on the ferry, correct? Much easier, no waiting in line.
- Will we have enough room in the van for everyone to pool from Balfour to Ainsworth when we add our lovely Kate?
Other than that let me know what to do and I'll be there with bells on.
I have to go, my prince has been misbehaving and the last time I left them he'd just given the elf girl a kiss. I'm not sure if she's going to kiss back or give him a good sock in the teeth. Gotta run...

Yeah, we are 'all' going as walk ons to pick up Katero.
I just printed out my novel, though it's far from done, still got some back story to add, and still have to decide whether or not to include some characters (They were there in the beginning, then, at around the halfway mark, they dissapeared, when I realized they might not have anything to do with the overall story.) But there are words, and they can be read, though they might not make sense, all of the time.
And Cheryl said, I think, that she could fit five people in the van, so it would depend on how many people are going.
Looking forward to it. :D

Nodding affirmative at clark's post: we are all walking onto the ferry and I do have room for five other people in the van.
Verified my novel at 12:46 this morning...yay I win! It feels good to have a purple bar...there were a few times when I didn't think I was going to make it. Thanks for the encouragement which was effectively a kick in the pants to get me going and get it done.
Looking forward to the cruise, soak and dinner.
Cheers,
Cheryl :)

I love the reference to Morris Dancing! (That's where "be there with bells on" comes from. That, and many other little bits of nonsense clutter my brain, thanks to the aging process....)
This doesn't really have to do with the NaNoWriMo Kootenay Cruise, but I thought I'd post it here in any case, as this is likely where our group will be looking in the next two days.
One of my "day jobs" is to copy-edit a literary journal out of Montreal, and I'm a stickler about fact-checking both fact and fiction pieces, as well as proofreading for spelling and grammatical errors. Another literary jounal, Toronto-based Taddle Creek, released a 16-page booklet this summer everyone might be interested in, given that December begins the NaNoWriMo editing process. It's entitled "The Taddle Creek Guidebook to Fact-Checking Fiction". You can Google "Taddle Creek " to find out how to obtain a copy.
Back to mad writing. There's a song stuck inside my head: "She's not going to make it, she's not going to make it....." I'll have to switch it to the Little Engine That Could's mantra, instead!

Unfortunately, I don't have the ink or paper to print my book out. That's over 117 pages and that's before I double space it even. I wish I could though but since this is only the very rough first draft it still has a long way to go. I will bring my laptop and anyone who is interested could browse it at the restaurant.
I still have about a week of work to go anyway before the end of the actual book. I haven't been to any of these restaurants but I'm game, which ever one you guys like. Katero: can't wait to meet you finally. way to come from behind!

OK guys, I'm starting to get excited about this. I have only 3 chapters left to complete the novel...it's taking longer now that I'm not pushing to crank out the words, but I'm still having fun.
When do and where do we meet you, Cheryl? I know I'm planning on joining the extraordinary event, so I'll come into Nelson and hitch a ride with you, pretty please.

Hi all! OK, so who's on for the "cruise"? Cheryl, if I "walk on" on this side of the lake, is there still room for me in your van? I'm not sure my bald-tired little pickup truck will take the road to Ainsworth without quite a bit of white-knuckling.
What ferry are we taking/am I meeting? I am so looking forward to meeting all of you in person.

Okey-dokey!
If no one is opposed, I will vote for the 1:10 ferry from Balfour. This means well pick up Kate right around 2, get back to Balfour at 2:50. I don't think it's too far from there to Ainsworth,(correct me if I'm wrong) so I'll estimate we hit the water by 3:30.
One and a half to two hours is my soaking limit most times ~ remember to bring water bottles. That puts us, potentially to supper by 6, followed by the drive home.
Honest, I'm not being a control freak about the times, it's just so we can plan and schedule. In the moment, I'm very up for being flexible.
Would anyone be offended if I brought a bottle of bubbly for a celebratory toast? Not sure where we'd drink it, but if we're takinga cruise, aren't we supposed to drink champagne from a slipper? Or something?

Hey y'all, does anyone have a way to contact Michelle? I tried to private message her that I can print her book for her, but I haven't heard back. She was having a bad time with her internet I remember...

I only know how to contact "Monique" through here :( sorry.
So I've been hoping and waiting to see if I could do this but it looks as though I'll be MIA this weekend. I hope everyone has fun and maybe we could all stay together as a group, via book club/writing group or something. Anywho, you'll all probably be better off without seeing my translucent Irish white skin anyway :P

Patrick.
You know for a minute I thought you were describing a part of your book and I paused for a moment trying to remember if you were writing erotic literature or not.
(Where's the smilie for the bug eyed panicked look?)
I agree that I'd like to keep in touch through the year. Does the Nano site stay up or do we need to Yahoo or something? A topic for discussion while in the hot springs to be sure. We'll come up with something and let you know, Patrick. We'll miss you, glowing skin or not.

Hey Patrick,
Sorry you won't be coming along on the "cruise". And there's nothing wrong with translucent Irish white skin.......I should know, descending as I do from the Burke and Carey clans. Tan in summer? I wish!

So Storm, what time do you figure we have to bail out of church to get to Balfour for 1:10? With a little wiggle time, preferably incase the roads are bad or whatever.

Hello Kootenay Clan,
I have a total of seven seat belts in my van.
My count so far is three seats occupied, consisting of me, Lydia and Kate.
I will need to know if I am connecting with anyone else in Nelson for a ride to Balfour. Monique, Storm, Aurora and one other could still fit in my van (too bad clark can't make it) :(.
I am not adverse to the idea of bubbly but, because I will be driving, I will not be partaking.
For those I am collecting in Nelson, it would be great to pick people up at noon from the park & pool spot on the highway leading out of Nelson toward Castlegar, that way you can park your cars for free, and hopefully we all know where the park and pool location is. Another option for parking is the lot underneath the big orange bridge (BOB). I have not been on the forum much but I do check for Nanomail. Let me know about pick-up location and for whom.
The long range weather forecast suggests that the weather will be partly sunny/partly cloudy for Sunday. Let's hope the meterologists are right.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.
Cheers,
Cheryl :)

Sorry to have missed out. My work schedule changed, someone quit on friday and I am going to be doing extra shifts so we have coverage. Wound up sleeping through it as it were. Sucks but there you have it. Feel kinda stupid too, I'm the one who suggested the whole idea. sigh.

We missed you, too! It was an incredible day, and ended all too soon. I'll let the others tell you all about it, as I have a stack of work to do this morning, but I'll jump back on later and fill in the blanks on any missing detail.

Well THAT was blast!
The cruise was lovely as the sun glistened on the water and we took over most of the passenger accommodations and spread out to read excerpts from each others completed novels. After picking up Kate, our elusive member from the wrong side of the water, Bonnie broke out the festive supplies and we all enjoyed a little bubbly!
We were even invited to the wheelhouse by Captain Jack..... (Why do visions of pirates start to jump into my head when I say that?)
Off to the hot-springs for a loooooonnnnnngg soak, including a number of inspiring travels through the caves. Storm insists that there will be underground hot-spring in her next years Nano. Dinner followed with excellent food and the most delightful waitress who shared that she too was interested in writing. Will we have another person join us in the adventure next year? Daneille even brought out a celebratory dessert to toast us all in completing our goals.
Cheryl safely brought us back through the lightly falling flakes to the Ferry terminal where we discovered that writers, Weird Al and Star Wars are a very good combination. Especially since Bonnie can sing. We said farewell to Kate and then the Nano-cruisemobile traveled safely back to Nelson where we had to say goodbye.
What a great way to celebrate our accomplishments, and we decided it was clearly the 'first annual' event. The only thing that would have made the trip better would have been to have all our members there, including the sadly missed Monique and glowing Patrick (could have used you in the caves, my man!!)
Start planning now to take part in next years version. Nano Kootenay Cruise 08, Sunday, Dec 7/2008

I had quite the "ocean chariot" to take me back to the other side -- I was the only passenger. No cars, no walk-ons, just little ole me! So, I got to sit and talk with a few of the deck hands about the lake ("Nobody understands how dangerous this lake can be," one told me) and the old Anscombe, which sunk near Ainsworth after decommissioning and a private sale a few winters ago after a particularly cold snap. All in all, a delightful day, and a delightful return home with the big ship all to myself. I will have to admit, though, that the return trip would have been much more fun had my compatriots been able to return with me, but the roads were worsening, the hour was growing late, and it was a school night, after all....
Here's to just as much fun next year, and many new adventures together in the meantime!
