Those who were at the TGIAO dinner last night will know what this one is about:
- Svalbard, where a goodly sized part of The Golden Compass takes place, is part of Norway, and has the northernmost airport in the world that has regularly scheduled airline service.
- The longest fjord in Norway is called Sognefjorden.
- A Monty Python skit is based upon the Norwegian Party in UK elections.
- The Norwegian parliament is called the Stortinget
- There is a county in Norway called Telemark, whose country government is located in Skien (naming coincidence?).
- Only Russia and Saudi Arabia export more oil than Norway.
- Norway has the third largest GDP per capita, behind Luxembourg and Ireland and ahead of the United States (according to the International Monetary Fund).
- The runway markings at airports in Norway are yellow, in contrast to those in most other countries, which are white.
- Norway's football team has been to the World Cup three times. They are the only team in the world that has never lost to Brazil.
- Norway has six different types of license plates that a vehicle can have depending on what it is used for.
- Norway's electrical power is provided almost exclusively by hydroelectric power.
- Norway's oldest cathedral is in Stavanger, which is a European Capital of Culture for 2008.
Just a little show of what procrastination can do. :)

Do we have any procratinators in the audience tonight? *looks around and waits for applause*
*There is some scattered clapping around the room.*
Of course, the true procratinators will wait until later to clap.

My tastes are a bit more mundane, I'm afraid. I like to listen to the musicians on You Tube.

Insanely Awesome Guitar Solo (this guy is SO good! It makes me horribly jealous) Don't be deceived by the beginning, the sound is sometimes a little rough. But Dear God this guy can play! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATub40Npxik

Nothing wrong with that, Dellani! So do I, but I can't put more than 3 notes together to save my life! (or quote facts about Norway, for that matter!)
I love this Steve Vai 3-neck guitar bit... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbAi7fa2yZo&feature=related

I love Steve Vai too. He's amazing! Have you ever watched his guitar solo from "Crossroads" with Ralph Maccio? Incredible! He actually played both parts and Ralph did an admirable job faking it.

Yes, but do they claim any really good guitarists, I wonder? Hmmmmmm ... this could bear checking into...

I still say that if the name of that black metal band can be found, then I will be impressed with Norway =)

In keeping with our extended conversation about Norway, I found some interesting sites about Norwegian black metal music. I haven't read them all, I just found them, so I can't comment on all of them. I did glide through the Wikipedia information, but didn't read in depth. I still am not sure about the name of that group. They were far less famous than some of the others, though they were the forerunners. The music industry, like life, ain't fair.

I'm still working on those metal bands, but here's another tidbit of news:
The Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger airplane, has gone to do freezing rain testing in...you guessed it...Norway (Oslo airport to be precise).

I remember an old Lucille Ball show when she was convinced some guy was a spy. She wanted to see his teeth of some reason, I can't remember now. Anyway, so she was asking him how to pronounce Oslo. "Do you say Oh slow or Ah slow?" She asked, opening her mouth very wide. "Oh, neither," he replied. "It's pronounced Ooo slow."

I thought I could let this subject die - as well it might - but I had to do this..... Call it compulsion, when I found some new bands and guess where they are from? Norway! First up is Royksopp - It's a made up word that combines "mushroom" and "to smoke" Okay, so these boys are probably on something, but their music is good. One song is featured on the Geiko commercial "Remind Me" (where the caveman is in the airport) The instrumental "Alpha Male" is extremely good. Well, that's if you like Downtempo, electronica kind of music.
You may have heard of the Kings of Convenience. Several of their songs are quite popular. My favorite is "I'd Rather Dance" It's a fun tune and the video is very cute.
The third, though less creative name, Those Norwegians. I haven't actually listened to them yet, but I found them on Rhapsody and had to include them.
