I'm the former...I have a friend who i think of as the latter. I don't think it's a matter of how well you do one of them, simply what one you tend to see yourself as....
Anyways, i thought it would be fun to have a club where everyone could write about doing both.

I write poetry when the mood strikes. Although, I am doing a very ambitious Whittier style poetic book. I have to work on it in doses. If writing fiction is hard, writing it in poetic verse is killer.

Does it count if I write songs instead of poems? They're basically the same thing.
I write songs fairly often. Especially during times when I get super stressed (like now). Songwriting/poem-writing is the only way I can unwind.

I'm probably in the minority as I see myself as more of a poet than a writer (which may explain how bad I am at nano). I find both really enjoyable but poetry comes really easily to me whereas I have to work more at writing as I tend to find it hard to rememeber that I'm meant to be advancing the plot and not just writing reams about the emotions in the scene.

May I see a sample of your poetic novel? I may have a go at something like that sometime. I used to write all the time, but married 7 years ago, and am now so busy I have only a little writing time. I think my husband is what they call 'demanding' of my time. He said I could not go back to do Honours when I was asked. I really wanted to but didn't dare to push the matter. Maybe next year?

My last one was horrible but I'll see if I can find the one before as that turned out okay in parts

I'm... both. I enjoy writing my poems just as much as I do writing my stories and I've been doing both now for as long as I can remember. In the last year or so, I've begun writing poetry inspired by my stories, but it hasn't gone the other way yet. In the last couple years, I've also become a lyricist, as three of my poems have been set to original music and performed during church. Two of them are copyrighted and my composer-partner is working getting them published. ^_^ For FAWM (February Album Writing Month) last year, thirteen of the fourteen lyrics I wrote were for a series of stories I am also writing. I'm pretty ambitious in my goals for this year, as I plan to write songs for FAWM that I'll use for the play I write during Screnzy.

Anyway, it's nice to know that I'm not the only one out there writing poetry and prose.

That scares me just a little, actually. However, I did it last year, so I'm confident I can do it this year.

I guess I'm both... I wrote poetry before prose, and not much before that. I transitioned away from heavy poetry writing for a while, but have started to get back into that, and into songwriting, especially now that I have a band who are willing to do my songs, if I actually write them...

Somehow I'm a poet who doesn't know how to write poetry. So I write poetic prose. Go figure.

All I need is to learn the mechanics, the rhyming and scanning and all that stuff. I'm also learning songwriting. In Bad Company, Desiree writes poetry and her sister Charlie is a singer. So I'm putting some of Desi's poems and Charlie's songs in the story. Charlie even has writer's block during FAWM 2008! (Mine was even worse: I wrote nothing, not even a lyric.)

In prose, much of my best work involves dialogue. Maybe that reflects the fact that I learned how to write doing comics scripts.
