Oakville: Just checking in!

Hello all Oakvillians... Oakvillites?

I hope everyone's having a fantastic year so far!

I've not been writing nearly as much as I'd like to - but I'm hoping to change that once I defend my MA thesis (next month. Just have to keep telling myself that. Next month).

I've been on the lookout for good spots for us to meet up in November - I hope to get out a lot more this year to meet people who are Nano-ing. It's so motivating! If you come across any good spots for writing during the summer, please post about it! The more places we can come up with, the better!

How's everyone else doing? What have you been writing? Have you edited your Nano2007?

Fill us in!

Cheers,
KW/Guelph/etc. The Story continues or, Life After NaNo

Hola all,

At the wrap party we discussed the idea of continuing to meet in some form or other after the NaNo madness was over (and, incidentally, the December madness as well). We figured the best way to coordinate, swap excerpts for critique and the like, etc. might be via google groups. Or, at the very least, it's the way we know.

And so, here it is, our very own google group:

http://groups.google.com/group/kw-nano

Description:

For those who are interested in continuing to meet, swap work/critiques and the like--and no, it doesn't have to be your NaNo work. The invite is also open to no-nano-ers who happen to write but for whatever reason didn't have time to cram it into November. Feel free to join us! This might also provide further incentives to folk who need such incentives to keep writing or to edit all the marvellous writing they have done thus far!

Ciao, all and hope to see you there!

KW/Guelph/etc WRAP PARTY!!

Trafuse and I have been talking about the wrap party for everyone, and came up with Saturday, December 1st as the logical date for it, seeing as it's the day after Nano ends, and is a Saturday to boot!

I know this is a little early...you still have lots of time to get to 50K!...but we wanted to get the info up so that people could plan around it and RSVP as well. Because of course, you will ALL want to come celebrate your victories over your novels!

Trafuse suggested that the Lion's Head would be a good place again, since they had no problem with having such a big group last time, but the time is still up for discussion: what do you guys think?

Also, I'd propose that if possible, maybe we could do something a little less like a sit-down family dinner this time, and a bit more mingly so we can talk to different people? If that is possible...I don't want to mess with their servers' minds too much. I also think some excerpt readings from finished (or unfinished) novels may be in order! Bring your babies!

Does anyone have ideas for anything else they'd like to see happen at the wrap party? Aside from some cheering, possibly some drinking, and a lot of "thank god it's over"s of course.

Suggestions and RSVPs here!!
Typing or hand-writing?

Which do you prefer?

Personally, I prefer typing my work. I think faster than I can write, but I think and type at the same rate. Plus, typing is more ledgible, and it's easier to just go back and edit instead of having to re-write.
Nov. 25 write-in, Kitchener

Apologies for cross- posting, but I posted this under the wrap party thread before realizing I really ought to start a new one.

Since I anticipate a whole weekend in my room will drive me crazy, I plan to bring my notebook and do a bit of longhand writing at A Matter of Taste in downtown K-town Sunday. (With its usual sense of timing, my laptop died near the beginning of this month and I have been mostly working on my fiance's old desktop. Fun times.)

Yes, I know that's tomorrow, and I know that's short notice, but I would love it if anyone could join me. A Matter of Taste is at 119 King Street West, not far from the bus station, between Young and Ontario streets. I will be there from 11 AM until at least noon, maybe later. I have shoulder-length black hair and a fairly bright green coat.

Hey guys!

Time to check in again and let us know how you're doing! We're halfway through the month - how's your word count going? I've stalled - I keep telling myself I just need to spend 2 solid days focused on it, but there's so much going on here (including my car needing some work which is why I haven't organized any write-ins recently) that I haven't had a chance to sit and write.

Are you doing much better than you expected? Did you conquer the week two wall? Keep writing! Good luck with the second half!
Waterloo Golden Griddle, Part 2 - Tues., Nov. 20 @ 5:45pm

So, the few people who have voted on when to do the second all-you-can-eat pancake extravaganza seem to prefer this Tuesday, rather than the following one.

So that we have longer to sit, and eat many pancakes, and work on novels, the time has been changed to 5:45 this time. I hope that works for you, but coming late is also an option. Just remember it closes at 9.

For those who haven't done it before, Tuesdays at the Golden Griddle are Pancake Tuesdays, meaning buttermilk pancakes are on all-you-can-eat for $2.99.

Location (and I hope this one is more accurate than my last map attempt):
http://www.google.ca/maps?setprefs&near=190%20Weber%20Street%20North,Wat...

Please RSVP in this thread, so that I can call ahead and give them an at least semi-accurate idea of how many of us there will be.
Oakville - Write-in!

Hey all!

I had an *excellent* time at our kick-off today! It was great to meet everyone who was able to make it! Monaghan's turned out to be a pretty good spot, what with the availability of seating.

If anyone's interested, I'd like to have a write-in (so plan on bringing a laptop or notepad and pen!) either one night this week, or next weekend.

Since there's few enough of us in Oakville, let's try to organize this for when is best for everyone. Monday and Tuesday are too soon, I think, to get organized.

So when is the best time for you?

I'm personally leaning towards either Thursday at 7:30, Friday at 4:30 or in the afternoon on the weekend.

Chime in with when you can meet - we can always organize multiple events if some of the group can get together one night and the rest can't until the weekend.

Cheers,
KW/Guelph and Area meet-up: Nov 18

Well, I think it's time we planned the next meet-up.

I know the topic line says the 18th, but if people are free on the 17th, I encourage you to get together somewhere and talk about your novels.

Me, I'm free on the 18th. So, if anyone wants to get together that day, I'm free. All we need is a place and a time. I'm open to suggestions.
Happy Halfway Day to my fellow Peterpudlians!

I posted this before - but I don't know where it ended up...

Congrats to everyone who's still in the game thus far, no matter what the word count!

It's all downhill from here. You know what I mean - we're at the point where we lose our balance and tip over, flailing madly, whacking our collective heads off of plot rocks as we go. But the scenery is breathtaking (if occasionally upside down.) Anyone watching probably thinks that we meant to do all of it. We're novelists - we must know what we're doing!

I don't know if I've ever thought of Nanowrimo as an extreme sport before...

I have to leave Haaselton's by 11:30 this Saturday, so I may not meet anyone this time around. I'm looking forward to it all the same.

KW/Cambridge/Guelph/etc - Happy Halfway Day!

That's pretty much it, I suppose...happy halfway day!

How's everyone doing? I'm more than halfway toward my goal of 70k, though I slacked the last couple of days. It definitely feels to me like we've been going for more than two weeks, but I'm hoping that's not a bad sign. There's still a long way to go!

Everyone should come out to our as-yet-undecided writing session on Sunday, which I guess will also represent the Halfway Party celebration. Cheers to 25,000 words!

HelloHello,

I'm currently in the process of moving from Ottawa to the Cornwall region (not entirely by choice, but rather out of necessity), so was wondering if there is anyone else out in this "city" that's joined up for the madcap writing month?
Guelph - checking in!

Hey there, Guelphites...

Hope everyone is doing well as we come to the end of the dreaded Week 2! I myself have ended up mostly scrapping my initial plans and starting a completely cliche-ridden, overblown mess of stereotypical high fantasy, and I'm actually having a blast with it. It's so very easy to ramble in that genre...

I meant to put forth some plans for meeting again this week; sorry about that. It ended up that my weekend was far too full in any case, even after having cancelled another event I was going to attend. Perhaps next week, hm? Any thoughts as to place, time, anything like that?

Keep on typing,
Kitchener/Cambridge/Waterloo/Guelph and area - Welcome!

Hey everyone!

It's another year of NaNoWriMo goodness. I'm your local Municipal Liaison (ML) for the region again, and I'm hoping to see some familiar faces making another attempt at a novel in a month. I'm also hoping to see some new faces - we're always happy to see people willing to join in the insanity of trying to crank out 50,000 words in just 30 days.

Like last year, I'd like us to get started with a kick-off party, either just before November, or at least somewhere near the start of NaNo. If anyone has any suggestions for times or locations, I'm happy to hear them. I'll start us off by suggesting the Lion's Head pub in Waterloo. They were very good to us last year, and are a nice place with lots of space.

Also like last year, I'm hoping we can plan at least weekly get-togethers to meet, to talk about our novels, and to maybe share a little of what we've written. I'm open to suggestions for times and places for these too. The requirements are that it has enough space for about 10 (sometimes more) people to sit down, have a coffee or cola, and that it is a space that doesn't mind if minors show up - we do occasionally have some younger writers join us.

I'd like to encourage everyone to participate in the forums and to come out the whatever meet-ups you can. Part of the fun of NaNo is joining in the community. Also, people who come to the meet-ups and other events tend to finish their novels - so participation really gives you a good benefit.

Hope to hear from you all soon!

Tim
Oakville-Maybe Meet up?

Hi.
Okay so I'm not really sure how this works but my friend's mum owns a Timothy's in Oakville so if anyone is interested in coming there to write let me know and i can tell you when, where and what time. It will most likely be on a weekend though. And since I'm from Mississauga we won't mind if people from anywhere other than Oakville can come. So if anyone is interested then let me know.
Mississauga - Starbucks at Square One Chapters

Okay, so there's already a Mississauga writing session happening with the Toronto Nano crowd on the 17th of November (at Second Cup, Hurontario and Eglinton), but I wanted to add a couple extra ones in order to fill the schedule out a bit more. I talked to the manager at the Starbucks at Chapters Square One about having a couple of writing sessions there; I know that a lot of people liked that location, and she recommended Monday or Sunday evenings. So to that extent, I think we should have a couple of "unofficial" Nano writing get-togethers on those dates.

Anyways, my point (and I do have one is this): Writing sessions. Ideal times for me I would be Monday November 12th, probably from 6-8, and Sunday November 25th, from 2-5. Both of these times are currently tentative - if people would rather have different times, or even different days, let me know and we can possibly make adjustments. I would love to get people out to these - Mississauga's usually pretty quiet as far as Nano goes, but I know there's a bunch of people out here who are Nanoing!

So, if you're a Mississauga Nano person, and would like to come out for a group writing session, please reply to this so we can work out convenient times for everyone.

If people want meetups in other parts of Mississauga, as well, and have a place they know that would be good, let me know and we can try to work something out there as well - I'm using "close to my home and easy to get to" as the main criteria that I'm working from.

(cross-posted in the Canada:Ontario:Toronto forum)
