Word War Rules

Eligibility

You must live within the UK or Ireland, and be relatively close to the city or region you
wish to represent.

Sign-ups

Your ML will provide a "Word War Sign Up” thread on your local forum to track word
count. Participants will post ONCE in the Word War Sign Up thread by 8pm on 10th
November stating that they wish to participate.

The Regional Word War

You must update your word count every two days, on the even numbered days of the
month, by 8pm. If you are unable to update your count, contact your ML.
During the last partial week (26th –– 29th Nov), you must update your word count daily, by 8pm. If this isn't possible, contact your ML immediately.
If you do not update your word count on four consecutive occasions it will be assumed that you have given up and you will be removed from the war (unless you already have more than 50k) If you know that you’re going to be away and won’t be able to update, let your ML know so that we can prevent this.
You must input your final (verified) word count by midnight on 30th November. After
midnight, you will no longer be able to update your count.

Scoring

You may drop out of the Regional Word War at any time up to 8pm on 20th November without affecting your region's count. If you do not drop out by messaging either myself or your ML, you will be in for the remainder of the competition, NO MATTER WHAT!
During the Regional Word War there will be a regularly updated leader board in the
Cambridge forum.
Only the official word count from the "Word War Sign Up" threads on the NaNoWriMo web site will be considered when computing the final score.
After midnight on 30th November, I will compute the final score for the participating
regions and will ask the other MLs from those regions (or their designated representatives) to verify the figures before declaring a winner.

Results

There will be two prizes:
The city/region with the highest average word count.
The city/region with the highest proportion of winners from the starting participants.

The MLs will compare results, and when all regions agree, the results will be posted on the NaNo boards.

Banter

Participants are encouraged to engage in good natured banter with participants from other regions in the various Word War Banter threads. Banter should remain good natured and within the bounds of good sportsmanship.

Our God-like powers

MLs decide what "good sportsmanship" means.
We reserve the right to remove folks from the competition for any violation of the rules and guidelines listed above.
MLs are the final authority in any dispute or question about the rules.

Trophies

To be determined...

PLEASE DO NOT POST A REPLY TO THIS POST, USE THE OTHER WORD WARS THREADS. THANK YOU.

Hi Folks.
We had some great meet-ups in Cardiff last year - here's hoping we're going to be just as lively in 2007.

For an initial meeting, some of us are getting together in the Prince of Wales in Cardiff on Saturday. I'll be there from about 12 midday. I'll be easy to spot - look for the purple hat and I'll be underneath it. (More practically, I'll try to bag the big table at the back of the ground floor and there will be NaNo posters in strategic spots.)

The venue is fully accessible, and allows under-18s into the bar, too.

If you want to be easily spotted, please wear a hat of some description - knotted hankies / paper bags / tiaras are all acceptable.

I'm really looking forward to seeing as many of you as can make it on Saturday.

In the meantime - Happy NaNoing!

Word War Banter

Ok, this is the thread where we're allowed to chat about the Word War. We're even allowed to be (politely) rotten about other regions, although i suggest we concentrate on cheering each other on.

Please feel free to post your comments on anything to do with Word Wars here, and remember - size matters. Word count is everything ;-)

Good luck everyone,
Word War Sign-ups

Hi everyone.
Sorry to be a little late off the starting blocks. if anyone would like to represent Wales in the Word War, please post ONCE AND ONCE ONLY on this thread. You will then be added to the list and your verified word count used to calculate Wales' score at the end of the month.

There are two prizes available in word Wars:
The city/region with the highest average word count.
The city/region with the highest proportion of winners from the starting participants.

So, as you can see, we need people who are going to win (i.e. exceed the 50k word count) as well as those who are going to write ludicrous amounts of words. You have until 8pm on November 10th to sign up,

We did really well last year, so let's hope we can do the same again.

Thanks to everyone for their support,
Has anyone else changed their minds about their plots already?

Okay, I decided not to do the ancient Greek one. I realised it was going to take shed loads of research to do properly. And I know, we're only supposed to be writing madly, not editing. Yes, yes. But anyway, I found it all a bit daunting, so I've changed my mind!

I came up with another plot, out of the air and I'm going with that one. Has anyone else done the same?

Hi again!

Last year we had a competition with some other regions...is this happening this year?

Also, can someone tell me where we can see how all the other regions are doing?

So what is everybody up to this year?

Got any spooky plans or has Nano planning already blocked out all thoughts of seasonal festivities?

I'm supposed to be dressing up but it's going to have to be a low budget affair. Poundland here I come!

How will you...

How will everyone be writing? I'll be traveling most of the month so I think it'll be an old fashioned pen and paper for me, which kind of sucks because I was diagnosed with arthritis in my right (writing) hand this summer. I would love, love, love one of the Alphasmarts that some of our Welsh nanoers are lucky enough to have (I'm not jealous! Really! Lol.) but money sucks. Lol. Who else will be relying on pen and paper and who will be click-clicking away at their laptops or alphasmarts?
Seeing as the other forums have shut...

... Let's all have a chat here!

Anyone want to talk about their novels? What genre are you writing in? How's your planning/plot coming along? Are you a seasoned novelist or is this a first try?

Personally, I'm doing Young Adult for NaNo, a sequel to a novel I finished in March. I've been absolutely terrible at writing this year, I just have not been motivated at all. I started a novel in the summer and after 30,000 forced words, got thoroughly fed up with it and deleted the lot, so I'm hoping that NaNoWriMo will be like a jumpstart to make me start writing again!
I'm aiming for 80K words in November, but I'm totally panicking that I don't have a good enough plot to stretch that far. I need to spend an afternoon on Google and Wikipedia doing some research, but I keep putting it off because I'm lazy like that! As usual my notes are scrawled on post it notes scattered around the room, and I really need to get them in some semblance of order before the writing starts!
