Hi all,

HAHA! First thread!! Yay - go me! Well Tasmanians? Welcome to "elsewhere" because we're somehow not important enough to warrant our own area. Well we rock harder than anywhere else anyway.

Tell us all a lil about yourselves and where on Nano forums you are most likely to be.

I'm a 30-something IT professional working at the University of Tasmania and I love writing just as pure escapism and fun. This year I'll be doing a weird lil project revolving around ... well... fantasy/adventure/comedy. You'll mainly see me hanging around the Fantasy forum.

I'm as keen as curry powder for the start of Nano and well.... I will try not to talk about my novel toooo much because I want to keep it exciting and not wear myself out on it. WOO!

So? What's everyone else up to?

Hi everyone!

My name's Narelle and I'm a 20 yo uni student in Townsville. I'm studying Arts/Education with majors in English and Japanese, and while suffering from a temporary loss of sanity I decided to try and do Nanowrimo this month even though I have exams all next week. In order to get a good footing I dedicated this last weekend wholly to writing... and ended on Sunday night with 25000 odd words! I never thought it'd be possible.

Anyhow, it appears that there are a fair few Townsvillian Nanowrimos, so I was thinking it might be fun to have a group writing session somewhere. Anyone know a good place in Townsville where we could set up camp? And would anyone be interested?

I 've had a few sad days when work completely took over my life, and a couple of others, when inspired to write stuff that could not be part of my NaNo subject matter. (Perhaps I should include them anyway? )

I have sidetracked and worked on those more serious pieces, and decided to plough on with this now. If there are any other ancient scribes out there, please communicate. I do feel as though I live in an otherwise uninhabited space at times.

Is it permitted fo rsome of us failures to keep on chatting during the next 11 months? If not, then would some of you be interested in forming a little group tokeep in touch by email till next Nano time?
I don't mean LOTS of contact, just some sort of bulletin board such as we have here.
Maybe someone who knows how to set one up could do that for us before the close of Nano?
I, for one would like to continue to be able to chat online with other writers, and do believe that just because we didn't make it this year, doesn't mean that we won't be wildly successful next time. Especially if we have some sort of contact with other time-starved writers. asialenore

Well, kept missing days (and days!) and thinking i would catch it up on the weekend or whatever and obviously didn't. Who thinks I should keep going, given that have no hope of getting anywhere near the target? Is there any glory in keeping going even if you know it's hopeless? Just a reminder to everyone that we'll be getting together on Monday 19th at 11am at Lithgow Library, Main Street, Lithgow.

Hello there, cousins from the southern state!

I was intending to spend half of November down there until my coffers ran dry, so I'm going to have to do my research from Melbourne.

I'm intending to set my novel in a (fictional) town there, so I want as much info as you can give me (please!). My town is set close to forest, possibly in the south-east or south-west corner, but if you have some suggestions of where about's I'd be best to place this . . . ah . . . place that would be fab.

Other things I'm interested in are:

What's Hobart's relationship to the rest of Tasmania? Is it seen as the hub or centre, or just a bigger place than others?

What is the set up of a typical medium- to smaller-sized town?

How old does a building have to be in Tasmania before it's considered *really* old?

I seem to remember Tasmania had three school terms rather than four . . . is that the case? How does that work? What's the education system like there, and what's the school finishing system down there (HSC? TCE?)?

What's the media like there? Do many people read newspapers? What's the news coverage on TV like? Is there any (perceived or actual) bias in the media? Are things hyped or understated in the press there?

Do you guys really call mainland Australia "mainland Australia"? Or is that a term coined from the, ah, mainland?

Are there any "Tasmania-isms" or ways of phrasing things you can think of? (I've lived in Adelaide, Sydney Melbourne and Canberra, and it always fascinates me how differently around this country speak!)

Does Tasmania have an equivalent of Moe? (a place where everyone is considered ill-bred rednecks in mocchisans and trackies that everyone thinks is outright dodgy)

I'm based in Terang so anywhere from Warrnambool to Colac means that I can be there (assuming it's a weekend or after work). However, I personally am not placing any sort of limits on this seeing at I ended up at the pre-nano Melbourne BBQ and don't mind a bit of driving.
