Wellington "Thank God It's Over Party" - Weekend of December 5th-6th

Hello everyone,

Of course, if you finish something like 50k (or 60,70 or 200K) novel in 30 days, it's time for celebrating!

Who is up for a gathering in Wellington on the 1st weekend after November ends? That's the weekend of December 5th-6th

Any ideas on where to go? Previous years, it was an afternoon thing with all of us meeting at a restaurant to meet up with all the other novelists. What's the story? Do people prefer to do it closer to Nov 30th sometime in the week?

Does a restaurant and a few drinks sound good?

If you give the OK, I'm happy to organize. Let me know if you are keen for a gathering.

My preference is Saturday, but I'm sure I can manage to arrange a Sunday gathering.

...yeah, so, I totally didn't stay up until well after midnight trying to verify my novel and failing because it was too long *cough*

In other news, the purple, it is shiny ^_^

OK, this isn't quite as cool for me as it would be for most people, since I'm aiming for 100k. I.e., I'm still waaaaaaaaay behind.

But hey, it's always great to get to 50k; and it's always great to see that shiny green bar smiling out at you from every post you make. :-)

Christchurch fifth meeting (29 Nov)

Right, so I'm a bad ML for missing two meetings in a row :( I do seem to be doing a lot better than normal as far as staying on track word wise though so maybe that's a positive influence? Poor consistency notwithstanding.

Anyway. This coming Sunday is almost the end of the month, and I won't be surprised if a lot of people are wanting to stay home and write there in an attempt to catch up. I know I've needed to do so in the past..
But I will be at the Arts Centre this Sunday afternoon at 2pm as long as I'm not huddling under a blanket again. Come along, share triumphs, curse those of that aren't having the problems you are. Enjoy the sun (I'm hoping there will be sun).

From what I can see going back through other posts and using the Author Search there are a fair few of you going along right on target. At least six from Christchurch have finished already. And some are slacking off as far as updating their word counts... you can catch up.
----------
ML duties again...
I may need to be more disciplined about writing every day this year. 10,000 word days aren't a good idea.

Anyone up for a word war? Right here, right now!

I need a motivator.

I'm easily confused, and the actual word war forum confuses me. I want just one person (or a few) to war with.

I can write at about 1000 wph if I get motivated, but so far today I've only written 1750 words because, well, I'm just not that motivated.

10 minutes? 20? 30? I'm up for whatever! So does anyone want to word war? You don't even need to try very hard - you'll be doing me a big favour if you say yes and war with me for any time up to half an hour. Then once I've had time to rehydrate, maybe another word war. And another....

I'm here all day, folks! :-)
Word war?

It's that time again, folks - I just got the following message from MysteriousAges:

----------
Hello there. I'm an ML for Canada: BC: Vancouver (http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/94 along with Jennerosity) and we were wondering if you would be interested in a word war with us. Before the 2008 stats went out, yours was the closest region in terms of word count, only a couple thousand behind us. I thought it would be more encouraging for two regions of similar size and output to have a war, rather than one with double the people and an extra million words.

Let me know what you think! (:

-MysteriousAges
----------

So - whaddaya all think? I know we had a fierce word war last year (although I can't remember with whom). We nearly beat them last year! But what about this year? Are you guys up for it?

EDIT: the stats for the Vancouver/New Zealand word war are here. They're only just beating us! WE CAN DO IT!
Compare your word count graphically

Much as I did last year I'm starting this thread hoping that there will be a graph show up soon after (magic like... ooh).
Anyone that posts a reply will effectively be giving their permission for an automated tool to check their word count on a regular basis and add that ever increasing daily total to a graph that may take more than an hour to appear.

[auto-poll] Where are you writing?

I'm curious to know where everyone else is doing the majority of their writing.. so, a poll. (Tool developed by the same guy that gave us the word count graph.)

Instructions
Please answer the question "Where are you doing most of your writing?" by submitting your choice(s) with the form

     VOTE="place your selection here"

To vote for multiple options, put more than one VOTE="option" in your post.
E.g., VOTE="home" VOTE="work" VOTE="write-ins" VOTE="library" VOTE="bus" etc.

Christchurch fourth meeting (22 Nov)

Well I'm hoping other people had good weekends; either upping your word-counts significantly or doing other things that you enjoyed. Even better would have been both. I barely wrote a thing and have fallen behind again because of it but don't regret a minute of my weekend away.

As to this coming Sunday; I will again be in the Arts Centre North Quad by 2pm (possibly as early as 1:30) and I'd like to see others there as well. I won't be bringing chocolate this time though, so if you weren't at the second meeting I'm sorry but you've missed out.

Target for the end of Saturday is 35,000 and it seems that most of you that I remember from meetings are already ahead of target or well within range of it so you could be on track by the weekend.

If you haven't already seen it you may like to have a look at your Nanolyser page.

ETA: Sorry people. It seems I'm not well today so I'll probably not be showing up. Remember that if it's still wet you can probably meet in the little room by Le Cafe.
8k before I sleep... I'm not crazy :P

Right, so I decided I was a little too much in the red after not writing since Tuesday (BLOODY EXAMS!!!) So I have decided I am going to get up to wordcount before I sleep. I do realise that it is 2am and yes I am a slow typer, but I shall try!!! I would be happy even getting to 33k but I am aiming high XD
Oh and I have a nano meeting tomorrow... may be slightly dead :P
Peace out!
Haha this little note may even make it into my novel, wouldn't harm the plot, or lack thereof :P
DDD=== A week!

A week! Monday to Friday. No wordcount increase. I've painfully scribbled two handwritten pages of text since I hit 40k. That's like 200 words.

It's exam week next week! I'm gunna ddaaaaaaaaaaiiiii DDDDDD===

Why didn't I write this week?! What is wrong with me???!!!
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Auckland write-ins

Thought I'd better start a new thread, since we had such a wonderfully successful kick-off session. Sorry I couldn't stay long, folks!

So these are the Auckland meet-up write-in sessions, as far as I can tell...

WEDNESDAY EVENINGS

Starting from 6pm

Borders Bookstore on Queen Street

SUNDAY MORNINGS

Starting from 11am

Albany Westfield Shopping Mall - meet in the courtyard outside near where the inside foodcourt and cinema are... we can decide specific cafe from there. :-)

I know there was a bit of interest from people on the Shore, so I'm happy to be there for the Albany meet-ups, and of course I'll make as many Wednesday evening ones as I can. If anyone wants to organise a weekend Auckland City based write-in... go for it. :-)
----------
Favourite 6 Word Stories:
Computer, did we bring batteries? Computer?
- Eileen Gunn
I’m your future, child. Don’t cry.
- Stephen Baxter
The baby’s blood type? Human, mostly.
- Orson Scott Card
Epitaph: He shouldn't have fed it.
- Brian Her

Im starting tonight~

Having just finished my last exam i will be starting my nano tonight.

While i am quite worried that i have left it too late, there are many many tales of people being up to 25k down on the last week being able to mission on and finish.

I am hoping to write my first real life story, as i have been hiding in the fantasy genre all my life.
The general plan to spend a lot more words on emotions and motives instead of sweeping through on a weak plot line with lots of pretty descriptions.

Wish me luck~
Weekly Palmy write-ins!

2pm
Saturday
Robert Harris

I'll try and reserve the big table at the back of Robert Harris each week - otherwise I'll bring along my big fluorescent yellow ML shirt or a NaNoWriMo book (No plot? No problem!) to make it a little more obvious who we are. So just go around looking at all the groups' tables to see which we are. No one will think you're weird. ;-)

Bring your laptop or pen and paper for word wars or writing games, depending on how things go!

I'll also try and organise a buddy system at the meet-up this coming Saturday (7 Oct) so all newbies will hopefully have an "oldie" to buddy up with. If you're keen for that, leave a message in this thread and I'll have a list of buddies ready for Saturday!

I'll be bringing different freebies along to each meet-up - but I have VERY limited numbers of these, so the sooner you're there, the likelier you are to get freebies! I also may be giving out prizes for word war winners, etc, so come prepared to write!

Any questions? Ask!

And I look forward to seeing you all at the meet-ups! :-)
Looking for someone writing Nano who is VERY busy - family of 3, long hours at work?

If you fit this profile, I'm interested in chatting.

We've all seen the people who spend day in and day out writing, those young whippersnappers who have hit 50,000 words in the first 6 days (you know who you are), but I'm interested in finding those people on the opposite end of the spectrum. You don't have any time, your weekends are packed to squeeze in writing around the children's rugby practice and dance recitals. You work 10 hour days and your kids are hogging the computer and your boss is asking for that extra report all of a sudden.

Send me a nanomail and we can chat.

Thanks all - talk soon.

NZ National Radio is doing a piece on Nanowrimo on "Arts on Sunday"

I got an email on Monday from Lucy Orbell at National Radio for a piece they are doing about Nanowrimo. A friend of her's is doing Nano this year and she decided to get in touch with some of the organizers. My name came up and she interviewed me last night for about half an hour.

She will email me soon with the exact time it is airing, but said it was between 1PM and 3PM on Sunday afternoon this weekend.

Curiously enough, this is overlaps with our write-in on Sunday. I'll see if I can dig up a radio to bring along. :)

It will also be available via podcast for a few days after it airs.

I tried to get in touch with a few people who could represent the vast spectrum of writers doing Nano this November, from the people who breeze through the 50k words in a few days, to those whose busy lives force them to limp across the finish line in the last hours of the 30th. Hopefully, Lucy can talk to a few of these people and make the story as interesting as it can be.

I'll fill in everyone to let you know exactly when the piece airs - I know I'll be tuning in.

Talk later.

Does everyone think you're crazy?

I've tried several times to explain to people why I'm lugging my laptop around and typing furiously during downtimes. Those who know of Nanowrimo have mostly relayed how cool they think it is and how much they've wanted to do it too. Those are the minority.

Those who've never heard of Nanowrimo usually sort of pause and then give one of the following responses:
1) "Hmm. Interesting." (followed by change of topic or going somewhere else)
2) "You do know you do strange things, right?"

So I'm curious - what sort of reactions do you get from your non-novelling acquaintances when you tell them about Nanowrimo?

OMG! I have a new character just suddenly decide to show up, which means that he needs a name and a back story and relationships with other characters and some sort of semi relevance to the plot and I think I'm going completely mad, and I think he's gonna be a character who doesn't just make a brief cameo, but actually is kind of a keeper, and oh Lords of Kobol save me from my self induced torture!
Christchurch third meeting (15 Nov)

It would seem that the turnout for this coming Sunday's meeting is going to be very low compared to our first meeting (but almost anything would). I think there were at least five of the 14 that showed up yesterday that won't be attending, myself included.
I would still recommend people show up though, unless there's no interest here. Getting to speak with others that know what you're going through has to help. (I was just about to hit Ctrl-S, who first mentioned that yesterday? I hadn't done so before.)

For anyone that gets worried about where they're at word count wise, I've been higher than 20,000 by the 15th only once over the past four years. The other three I hadn't even got to 16,000 and still finished each of those years.
----------
ML duties again...
I may need to be more disciplined about writing every day this year. 10,000 word days aren't a good idea.
