I've gotten to ____ words!

Here's a spot for us braggers to brag about our word counts! As of the 1st, I'm at 3,163. I'm pretty sure that's the best I've ever done on the first day. It guess it helps that I have multiple MC's. Let's see how we do throughout the month!
Award Nominations Thread

At the TGIO, Dev and I will be giving out some very special awards. But we need your help! We need you to nominate your fellow WriMos for the awesome things they’ve done this month. These can be as serious, or as silly as you want. Before the TGIO Dev and I will pick out our favorite ones and give them away at the TGIO Party.

Please post your nominations in this thread. Include the name of the award, and the person you nominate to receive it.

So that we're not picking through conversation to find nominations, please don't post anything other than nominations in this thread.

Last Minute Disaster

So, I managed to do something incredibly stupid.

I thought I was saving my file to my hard drive, when I'd been saving it to my USB drive. So...when I wanted to take the file with me, guess which one I overwrote?

So now I'm down 10,000 words from my last save state. Anyone happen to know if a file can be recovered in Word 2007 if it has been saved over?
Misbehaving Main Characters

Every nano, thousands of writers across the globe are appaled at the things their MC does that they did not plan for. Sometimes a secondary or even minute character will appear and do things too, but however it happens, the writer end up staring at the computer screen saying, "What did they do that for?!"

Most of the time it's a good thing, because more words make for a happy wrimo, but it can also be incredibly frustrating...

What did your MC do today? One of mine went hitchhiking and got picked up by a Mafia assassin... and I have no idea why. Yet.
Mr. Q, the communal character.

At the Kick Off Party we created a communal character, Mr. Q, but because your mostly trusty ML is a scatter-brain who routinely leaves the house with her shirt on inside out* he languished in my backseat until someone (thanks Jerry!) reminded me about him.**

Mr. Q wants to be in your novel and the participants at the Kick Off gave him some lovely traits to help you get a better idea of what kind of fellow he is.

His name starts with a Q. (first or last.)

He has an afro.

He has a tattoo.

He wears thigh high boots.

He speaks with a British accent.

He is an unconvicted felon.

He has a perpetual grin.

He has blue eyes.

He has won the lottery - but lost his ticket so he doesn't even know.

He has a pet monkey.

Red M&Ms ONLY. (That's all that was written - interpret it how you like.)

He has a belt.

Click to embiggen

If you include Mr. Q in your novel you should definitely post an excerpt (just keep it clean, please, we're an all-ages forum.)

Have fun and happy writing!

* Not true. It's what we fancy writers call "exaggeration for comedic effect." The true scatterbrain stories are too embarrassing to tell.
** Seriously guys, if I ever say I'm going to do something and I don't, it's not because I don't love you, it's because I have a memory like a sieve and the prioritizing skills of a ... I dunno... some thing that doesn't prioritize well. I'll come up with something later. It's what we fancy writers do.

Field Trip!

Every year NaNo HQ hosts the Night of Writing Dangerously in San Francisco. It's $200 to get in, plus airfare, food and accommodations. I don't ever forsee making it to the Night of Writing Dangerously.

Fortunately, just three hours away, Nashville is hosting the Evening of Scribbling Recklessly! It's only $10 to get in, plus some kind of potluck item.

Now, I know we're lagging behind Nashville and the time it takes to drive is time we could be upping our word counts, but maybe a change of scenery will inspire us? And in any case, I think it will be fun. We can show them in person what good sports we are or, y'know, sabotage with Acme products, Wile E. Coyote style. Whadya think?

Relevant info for the event itself can be found here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3266279

You'll need to RSVP in the Nashville forum whenever the thread goes up.

I'm driving with a couple of other writers in tow. My car is full, but I thought if someone else wanted to drive we could make a convoy of it.

The event starts at 4:00 pm on Sunday the 22nd. I would want to get on the road by noon, which would give us enough time to get lost at least once and stop by a grocery store to get a potluck item. It ends at 10:00 pm, so if we left right as it wrapped up, we'd make it home around 1:30 or 2:00 in the morning.

So who's in? Anyone else willing to be a driver?
ANNOUNCEMENT - 11/22 Evening of Scribbling Recklessly - Nashville, TN

Dear Neighboring Regions (and Australia),
Greetings from fly, the ML for NaNo Nashville. This year, we are having our own ginormous write a thon, which we'll be holding the same time those out in Cali are having theirs (well, mostly). We would very much like you all to come. In fact, I would very much like to have so many writers that our total writers word count EXCEEDS that of the Cali event.

Details are as follows. Please post here if you can come.
NOTE: You only need to RSVP to one thread for this event.

The Evening of Scribbling Recklessly is on 11/22 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Nashville.

Where: 2300 Knights of Columbus Blvd. Nashville, TN

Where? - From I-40, exit Briley Parkway South (exit 215A), take the first LEFT onto Knights of Columbus Blvd.

When - 11/22 from 4-10 PM.

Important Notes:
$10 donation required for admission. This is in addition to any donation you've made. I will waive this for anyone that can prove they came from Australia.
Bring a side dish to share. Remember, we're pretty much all going to have computers handy, so stay away from really messy stuff. :)

We will be having a ton of giveaways.
You can get tickets for these givaways in a number of ways:
- Admission fee. Yes, you automatically get tickets for showing up.
- Bringing a dish to share like you're supposed to
- Wear a NaNo t-shirt. This can be from any year, and can be national or regional. I'll also accept Script Frenzy and Office of Letters and Light shirts for this.

- Additional tickets can be purchased.

Please let me know if you're coming.

Can You Please Help Me .... NaNo Project Help!!

I was hoping y'all could help me just a wee little bit.

As a side project during November (and actually, I'm more into this project than I am with my novel), I'm asking everybody to send me postcards from which I'll base a story.

All I'm asking is that the front of the postcard is actually a place of some sort (Parks, City Scapes, Monuments, Museums, etc.... whatever) and that on the back, you write a character name, the character's age, and a sentance or a few words about that character.

Stick it in the mail to me, and (starting November 1) when I get it, I will use the image on the front and the character on the back, to write a short story of at least 500 words. (Just think 100 postcards, and that's another 50,000 words right there.)

Send them to me:

fly/Mandi M. Lynch
1008 Jacksons Valley Rd
Hermitage, TN 37076

(feel free to pass this on to anyone else you know who'd be willing to help!)
Ridiculousness

We are a ridiculous group of people who write ridiculous things.

Just now I was writing this sentence:

Quote:
Her hair was coming out of her braids.

But halfway through I got distracted by something. Got up, wandered away, came back about ten minutes later and reread my last sentence.

Quote:
Her hair was coming out of her bra

Yeah, I'm keeping it like that.

What ridiculous thing have you written today?
Wanted to let you all know...

It has made such a huge difference being around you all this year. I never really got involved with the group in Birmingham (they met too far away), and it's been really fun hanging around other writers. Those of my friends that used to write mostly don't anymore, and I like being around people who do.
So thanks everyone, for making me feel welcome. :)
Also, if anyone would like to friend me on aim or twitter, my screen names are ducklauncher (don't ask) and mk_moore respectively.
More Unofficial Write in options!

SO yeah,

this is adrienne, (or Other Laura - depending on who you talk to)

And I'm that chick that goes with a penguin and my laptop to places I can write.

Part way through the month, I have discovered that I can technically host an unofficial write in. Not many people will be likely able to make it, but thats okay with me, and I'm sure that's okay with my bosses too.

See, I get off at 1pm (well, there's this theory I get off at 1, but we'll see 'bout that) on TUESDAY NOVEMBER 17th

and tuesday novemeber 17th is pay day for me. And I refuse to waste the gas to get out to my house, only to have to turn back around and go right back over to where I work to pick up my check at 2pm.

So someone else (like I said, I'm stupid with names XD) mentioned that they were thinking about a write in on Tuesday out in the germantown area. I agreed and now we're set.

so:
WHEN: TUESDAY NOVEMBER 17th
TIME: 1pm to 3:15pm (i have to leave then to get to the bank to make my check useful)
WHERE: PANERA BREAD @ Poplar and Exeter

How to know the wrimos:
I will have my little penguin on the table, and there should be a couple of signs. (NaNoWriMo signs, or "I NaNo, Do you?" signs)

~HGL
----------
HGL is behind, but that's normal. (behind again :'I *sigh*)
~~~
Do the characters have minds of their own? yes
Did they do something you weren't expecting? yes
Are they hiding things from you? yes
What good is it to be the author?!
Hi! Introduce yourself here!
Welcome to the NaNo '09 season! Over the weekend we'll get some nuts-and-bolts posts up, such as event information, how to donate (even when you're broke), tips for hosting write-ins and other fun stuff.
In the meantime, how about some introductions?
I'm Jenny and I'm one of your Municipal Liaisons or MLs. (Your other is Kara, who I'm sure will be by soon.) MLs are the organizers at the regional level and we also moderate the forums, so if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to e-mail or PM us. Kara and I have conflicting schedules, so one of us is almost always awake. 24 hour MLs! Ha!
Anyway, this will be my 8th year participating in NaNo, 4th year MLing, hopefully 6th year winning. I've written a thriller, fantasy, spec fic, adventure, horror, a...um... dark carnival romance and a mystery. I have no idea what I'm writing this year but I have no doubt it will be ridiculous.
I write outside of NaNo but haven't been published (yet!.) I've recently gotten serious about editing my 2006 novel (the adventure) and hopefully one day you'll see it on the bestseller end cap at Barnes and Noble (or at least, on the employee picks shelf.That would be good enough for me.)
When I'm not writing I like to read, knit, walk my beagle-dog, glue things together and watch trashy reality TV.
I just wanted to say that I love you guys, my neighbor region to the south.
Of course, love is relative. I mean, I love my sister, but I still want to do better than her in all things.
I'll think of you guys as a cousin. I mean, I want you to have success, but not as much as I have.
For me, that's a good thing. Here I am, looking at you guys and dropping gauntlets everywhere.
Yeah. Nashville Can Write More Than You Can.
You up for the challenge?
(Note - we do an average word per writer count.... )
Love you -
(Oh, PS - our Evening of Scribbling Recklessly is on 11/22 and we totally want you to all be there. We promise not to point and laugh when you're losing to us. )
Is anyone else just now getting their bearings?
The first, I don't know, like fifteen thousand words of my novel are complete gibberish. Short character sketches, pointless scenes in no particular order never building on the others and in some cases simply repeating others with different words or alternate events, and meta-narrative sequences of just me talking to myself or my characters. Only in the past few days have I really gotten an idea of what I want to do, the characters I want to keep, but I still have no idea where I want to go. this is what I get for pantsing it.
am I the only one?
The Dollar Dare
I'm really big on the fundraising this year. I want our pig to be stuffed when we smash it open at the TGIO. To that end, I'm willing to put my own sanity and the quality of my novel on the line.
I propose the Dollar Dare. Now, we have a dare jar every year and I pull dares from it but rarely do I end up using them. With the Dollar Dare, that will change.
Here's how it will work:
At every write-in I attend I will have Dollar Dare cards. You write a dare on it, paperclip a dollar to it and plop it on my keyboard. I immediately have to incorporate that dare into my novel. I will write a minimum of 200 words before dropping the dollar in our donation jar and returning to my regularly schedules noveling.
Fine Print
* I can use the dare however I like. A dream, a flashback, an Important Announcement from the Narrator, whatever.
* The money will go straight into the donation jar after the completed dare has been verified by the darer.
* I will not accept pornographic dares.
* I reserve the right to delete all trace of dares when I edit the novel.
----------
The Main Character and his/her Partners in Crime
We all have at least one main character. As it is with most NaNos, we all get wonderfully attached to at least one character, most often it's a MC. And surely your other characters have something intriguing about them too, or else they wouldn't be in the novel!
So here's a lovely little thread for all of us to brag about our lovely little characters. ;)
As for me, I think most of my novel will be third person omniscient, so I get to have all kinds of fun floating around and talking about them, I'm just not sure exactly who they are yet. ((plugging another thread time!) If you have a character idea, but they just can't seem to fit with your novel's setting or whatever, refer to the "I can't seem to make the character work in my novel" thread)
I do know for sure that there will be one, and only one, character in my NaNo who knows he's a character in a NaNo. Talk about inner conflict. "You made me say WHAT? Just for WORD COUNT?"
Take two.
strange mix I know... but I suspect my short stories will be too! lol
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I decided on writing a book of short stories. I've been planning really hard for a full length novel or even a novella but I got the feeling that my over-planning might be my ruin so I decided to just jot down some themes, characters, imagery to work off of when we start. Usually I take a day or two to finish a decent sized short story so I just may end up with a stack of 13-15 short stories! (I tend to over plan every detail because I studied Film at UM and in Screenwriting we were taught to do that pretty much... hard to break the habit!)
Prior to (self)publishing, I will probably insert stories I've written in the past too. But this if AFTER the word count of course! :)
*****Copy and Paste the Survey and tell everyone about your novel-to-be!*****
[Official] Unofficial write-ins and how to host them
Kara and I are hosting write-ins on the weekend, but like most people we have jobs and families and like to sleep every so often, so we can only do so much. But! You don't need to be an ML or even need one around to have a write-in. Anyone can do it! Here's what you need to do:
Pick a place: All a write-in venue really needs is decent seating in which few people can write. Outlets are helpful (bring a surge protector if you can so everyone can plug in) and food is even better. If you do host a write-in at a place that serves food, please support the venue by purchasing a drink or a snack.
Pick a time: It doesn't hurt to get in the forum and try to arrange a time that works for other people, but you'll never find a time that works for everyone, so don't stress about it. Pick a time that works for you.
Don't conflict with offical events. We encourage WriMos to host their own write-ins, but please don't schedule one that conflicts with an official event. If we're out in Germantown on a Saturday and you'd like to write in Midtown on the same day, that's fine. But please don't schedule a write-in five minutes away from another event.
Announce it in the forum: Please use this thread to organize and announce unofficial write-ins. Make sure you let people know the time, place, whether there are outlets and how they should recognize you. If you'd like the write-in put on the calendar, let Kara or me know (via PM at the moment - I'm not sure we're hooked up to the ML contact form yet.) There's no guarantee we'll see the post before the write-in, so definitely contact us if you want it on the calendar.
Aaaaand, I believe that's it. :)
----------
Collierville?
I live in Collierville and unless I want to drive the SUV (and crash and burn and die and never finish my novel because I can't DRIVE that beast) I'm stuck cajoling and bribing my mother to be less overprotective of her car so I can get anywhere in the city. While I can make it to some Memphis things, it's difficult, especially with my erratic work schedule that usually has me busy all weekend and bored all week.
That said, I wanted to shout out to all my Collierville (and Germantown! depending on how close you lot are) peeps and see who's out there and if anyone wanted something unofficial in town? I know for small groups we might be able to raid the Avenue's B&N Starbucks, but there's possibly the library, too. If anyone else has any other ideas that'd be great because after six-and-a-half years here I still don't know crap about the town, let alone where any decent-sized group of people could linger for an extended period of time and write at low/no-cost.
It's my first year doing this and as much as I love my baby novel, I'm needing a little more encouragement than an eyeroll and condescending smirk from my mother and a sweet IM here or there from my friend in England. (She is very helpful, but I need some face-to-face with this.) I'm catching myself lagging already and really wanna get in on this communal insanity. I think it'd majorly help get my butt in gear and feel like I'm not the only one. (Yes, I've seen the numbers, but I still feel like a lonely fish in a big sea of plot holes.)
That said (longer than I'd meant...), who's out there? Talk to me, people! I'm really nice, I promise! *gets suddenly shy*
Twitter and Facebook
Do you twitter (or tweet or whatever the correct verb is)?
Then you should follow the official Memphis Region Twitter account here: http://twitter.com/NaNoMem
Once we hit November you can expect 1-3 tweets a day. We'll be using it for event reminders, shout-outs and maybe the occasional dare.
And if you're looking to be tweet buddies with other Memphis WriMos, here would be the place to share your username.
Also, if you're on Facebook you can check out the regional fan page here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/Memphis-Region-WriMos/135873352...
Kick-Off
Take two. I had a post, but my enter key ate it. I am sad and bordering on deliriously tired.
Anyway, the basic idea was to make sure you've all been checking the regional calendar, because the Kick-Off party is this Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 4p.m.
Please come out to meet me and Jen, and Wree-Mo the Pig... he's hungry and needs your donations.
We'll be playing games and introducing the awesomely brand-new-re-incarnated Fabulous Prize bag.
See you there!
