Dare Tracker!

At every Memphis event we have a Dare Jar, which is sort of like the NaNo Forums Dare Thread, only it's smaller, localized and more dangerous because you don't know what the dare is until you've pulled it and by then, according to our rules, it's too late. You pull it, you write it.

Like most things in NaNo, this is on the honor system, but if you want to show off where you've inserted a Dare Jar dare into your novel, here's the place to do it! Be sure to let us know what the dare was, also.

**Try to keep it to one or two short paragraphs and also please remember that although the regional forum is currently missing its little sun icon... for some reason.... this is still considered an all-ages friendly forum, so keep that in mind when posting excerpts.**

Now what?

Some people do NaNo as a lark, and won't write again until next November, if at all. Some people, though, want to take their novel - or their writing in general - further.

For the latter, here are a few post-November ideas.

First off, BE AWARE when it comes to trying to get published. I know that most of you probably know this, but it never hurts to say it. Writers are not immune from scams and there are plenty of people out there who will happily take your money regardless of whether or not your work will ever see the light of day. Please check out this thread for more information about scams.

Thanks to generous donations from participants, the NaNoWriMo site will be able to stay up throughout next year. There is a new forum up called December and Beyond! where you can find someone to critique your novel and get information on the editing process.

And - in case you missed one of my four million other plugs - there is the Memphis Area Word Catchers. We meet on the third Saturday of every month. Check us out at www.wordcatchers.org.

In April, The Office of Letters and Light, the non-profit that runs NaNo, will be running Script Frenzy. Script Frenzy is like NaNo, only the goal is to write a 100 page screen or stage play. I'll be participating and possibly MLing. I'm writing a musical. It will be amazing and horrible!

And in a not (necessarily) writing-related vein, Chris Baty will soon be asking you to join him for a year of Big, Fun, Scary Adventures. Writing a novel in thirty days is easier and more fun with an entire community behind you and the same can be said about a lot of things, thus a Year of Big, Fun, Scary Adventures, which can be anything from climbing mountains to learning to play an instrument. I am going to learn Spanish. Which will also probably be amazing and horrible. Keep your eye on the December and Beyond! forum, or your inbox if you're set to receive mails from Chris.

Anyone listen to Episode 3 of WrimoRadio? Those WriMos down in Melbourne, Australia have vowed to crush the word counts of not only Sydney and New Zealand, but us, Memphis!

This cannot stand! Are we up to accepting their challenge? Of course we are. I know it may seem hard since it's all nice and sunny down there, and we're all gonna get sick at some point this month, but they've thrown the gauntlet, and we must... pick it up? And make sure it's not broken, I guess.

Who's with me? Who's willing to go to the Melbourne forums and accept their challenge? More importantly, who knows how to check a city's total word count?

But for Richard it wasn’t about losing his sister and being alone. If Angela died he would lose his best friend, his confidant. Richard rolled down his window and sucked the fresh air in. Richard beat his palms against his forehead. He couldn’t let his thoughts get away from him. Maybe the paramedics just took her to the hospital as a precaution; Angela could be perfectly fine. Richard stepped from the car and walked towards the entrance of the hospital. Every step that he took filled him with a crushing sense of dread. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath and stepped through the door.

The TGIO party is a chance to kick back and revel in (or complain about) our noveling efforts. There will be food, fun, prizes and excerpt reading. Whether you wrote 100 words or 100,000, join us for the last hurrah of the NaNo season!

When: Saturday, December 1st from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm (we have some setting up to do, so please don't arrive early.)
Where: Calvary church, 1851 N. HoustonLevee Rd, Cordova, TN.
Who: WriMos and their novel supporters are invited to the TGIO party.

If you've been coming to events and getting punched by Kara (hee) you're eligible for prizes (woo!), but you have to be present at the TGIO to win them!

If you'd like, bring something to drink or something sweet to nibble on. At around 4:30 we'll be ordering pizza. If possible, please bring a few dollars to chip in towards the pizza.

About halfway through the night we'll settle in for excerpt reading. A few points on excerpts:

Excerpt reading is completely optional. Furthermore, if you have an excerpt you like, but are shy about reading in front of the group, there will be plenty of people who will be happy to read it for you. Just ask. :)

While excerpt reading isn't mandatory, being respectful of those who are reading is. We're not here to critique, just to share and enjoy (read: quietly.) If you're not interested in hearing excerpts, feel free to slip out when we give the call.

To make sure everyone who wants to read an excerpt gets a chance, we're capping the excerpt length at 1000 words. We'll have a place to set out longer excerpts for people to read at their leisure and these can be any length you want but (once more, bolded for good measure) excerpts to be read can not be more than 1000 words long. You can bring more than one 1000 word long excerpt and if we have time, we'll go around again.

If you have an excerpt you want to read but don't have access to a printer, drop me an e-mail (evakiday at comcast dot net) and I'll print it for you and bring it with me.

All of our events are all ages friendly. Please use discretion when choosing your excerpt.

EDITED TO ADD: If you're coming to the TGIO and you made it to at least 25K and you would like a one inch button with your novel title on it, lemme know. Just link me to a background image and lemme know what font you want (must be something I can download for free somewhere.) I'll bring it to the TGIO for you. :)

Memphis regional statistics

I had planned, mid-month, to go through the list of people affiliated with Memphis, click on every username, add up the word count totals and put together some statistics on our region. But then another ML wrote a script to do that exact thing, so now I don't have to do all that work. (But I was GOING to. Thought that counts, right?) Anyway, thanks to NewMexicoKid of Naperville, Illinois, here are our stats, as of today. (Active is defined as having posted to the forums or entered a word count.)

* Number of people affiliated with Memphis = 194
* Number of active Memphis affiliates = 85 (43%)
* Number of people homed to Memphis = 124 (63%)
* Number of active people homed to Memphis = 53 (27%)
* Total regional wordcount = 716919
* Average wordcount (affiliated) = 3695.46
* Average wordcount (homed) = 5781.60
* Average wordcount (active affiliated) = 8434.34
* Average wordcount (active homed) = 13526.77

There are a lot of people affiliated with Memphis who aren't participating or haven't even signed in this year. So that's what brings down our average word count. The last stat, the average word count of people who are homed to Memphis and active, is the most accurate. And wow! 700,000 words! 13,500 on average! We're doing pretty good! Keep in mind that if you're affiliated with Memphis, but haven't set it as your home region your word count is NOT contributing to our regional word count. Go set your home region, people!

Actually, clever me, after a month of being unable to participate in the RL events, I only at the end get the idea to see if anyone lives near enough to me that we could get together.

However, I'd love to keep writing through the year, and thought I might like to try to get a group of folks together for a... well, writing group.

Long before Melbourne became the City of Melbourne, it was called Batmania, Bearbrass, Bearport, Bareheap and Bearbury. Some of these names were derived from the Aboriginal name for the area which was Berren or Bararing, plus there was the Big Miam Miam (as they termed the Town plenty of white Bread).

About 90 tonnes of dog poo is left on the streets of Melbourne every day!
The problem is rated as one of the top five litter problems in the city. A survey has showed that only one dog-owner in four bothers to pick up their pooch's droppings.
In September last year, around 200 people attended the first ever dog poo summit, in suburban Doncaster, at which a variety of experts presented different angles to solving the problem of dog poo litter.

Melbourne started as an illegal settlement. A dubious treaty signed with aboriginal leaders in 1835 gave a syndicate of Tasmanian sheep farmers led by John Batman the 'ownership' of most of the land bordering Port Phillip Bay
New South Wales Governor Richard Bourke declared Batman's treaty illegal and the settlers to be trespassers. But within two years, more than 350 people and 55 000 sheep had landed and Melbourne was a fact.

Feral cats, foxes, rabbits and kangaroos are part of Melbourne Airport’s population. There are hundreds of animals living within the 2369 hectare airport’s boundaries The airport also maintains and is revegetating a grey box forest at the north-western end of the (grey box is a variety of eucalypt).

Next Saturday's write-in gets its own post because it is different and special. It will have two things that other write-ins don't.

1) Instead of the write-in starting at 4:00 pm like usual, we'll be holding the monthly Memphis Area Word Catchers meeting. Word Catchers was formed last year at the end of November when we realized that we didn't want to stop meeting just because NaNoWriMo was over. We decided that the bonds and encouragement that got us to 50,000 words in a month should carry on through the year, and Word Catchers was born. We have a lot of fun while helping each other on the road to publication.

Word Catchers is run by Jacks, with occasional appearances by her husband Dan, who also manages our website and forum. If you're reading this, you're invited to come check out Word Catchers. If you're not interested, no big deal. Be there at 6:00 for amazing write-in fun!

2) We'll also be having a "Chili Dump" at this write in. Basically everyone brings some chili and we dump it in a big crock pot, mix it together and enjoy! What we need from you is... chili! Week Three: Emerging From the Depression of Week Two

It's now officially Week Three. One of the most significant events in some NaNo Novels. Here, we emerge out of the depression, slowness, and dying motivation of Week Two. Now, your characters become comfortable with their story's setting. They befriend other characters without our planning. They... become like real people.

And the plot picks up. It decides it feels like actually becoming a part of the novel... meaning, of course, that we can stop sloshing our way through all the padding for a while. Progress the plot. Commence moving forward. That secondary character that only appeared for one page, yet had its own biography and life's story included in the novel? You can stop talking about that character for just a brief moment. Your plot can move forward a bit... But not too far! Remember: you have to have at least 50,000 word by the end of the month.

That said, take a Tylenol for your headache, and keep wearing the letters off of your keyboard!

Chris says today is the day to let you know how awesome you are Miss Jenny and Miss Kara, and so here I be. (Of course to us you are special every day but when you get a day to celebrate well you should get out the brass band and the drums and all the other festive things and go for it!)

Seriously, thank you gals for working so hard to help us get started, motivated and pointed toward the finish line. Your parties and write-ins rock. I'm have a great time this year and it's all because of you gals! Thanks for the balloons of stress relief, the "on your mark, get set - WORD WARS!" Week Two (dun dun DUUUUUUUN)

Okay, guys, here it is. Week two. The dreaded WEEK TWO. Week two is, historically, the worst week for us WriMos. The initial excitement of plunging headfirst into our stories has worn off and all the little things we put aside at the start of the month (video games, social outings, personal hygiene, sleeping, eating) are starting to look a lot better than the barely there novel in front of us.

Whether you're ahead, behind or right where you need to be, week two is hard for a lot of people. It's also when that phrase "Don't get it right, get it written" comes heavily into play. Remember, this is a first draft and we're not aiming for perfection. You can save the tearing your hair out for the editing process.

In the meantime, try not to let week two bring you down and ABSOLUTELY DO NOT let it knock you out. The reward for hanging in there through week two is emerging into week three, where things just get easier.

A few tips for making it through week two:

1) Write your ten words. (see last week's pep talk by Naomi Novik. If you can write ten words, odds are good you'll end up writing more.)

2) Take a day off. Not a day where you sneak around, avoiding your novel and then feel guilty about it later, but a scheduled day to not write at all. It is okay; one day won't kill you or your word count and you'll have all of week three to make up for it. Resolve to relax a bit and (in theory) your novel will creep into your brain anyway and you'll be even more pumped about writing the next day. (But never take two days off in a row. That'll just murder your motivation and thin the connection between you and your novel.)

3) Use the forums. Your MLs and fellow WriMos are here to support you when you're down. Take advantage of that. If you need a particular brand of motivation (flying guilt monkeys, extreme cheerleading, bribes) let us know. It's what we're here for.

My name is Tabitha Pike and I have been writting for years. this is my first year writting for Nano. I found it last year and have been pondering the ideas in my head for a while. I have characters and a plot. I have been writting every since the bell rang, the gun shot, or the go was said. I have not sleep as of yet. I am going to have to take a break. I have written several chapters to "The Linking Stones: A New Beginning." I already know how I want it to end. I know the people the Scottish Warrior is going to meet and I know everything I want to write about the Cherokee INdian princess. I just have to write it. I just hope I can get it finished before the month is out. I have an outline done already, with everything I want to write. I will have about 40 to 41 chapters when I am finished. That is if I can do it. I am going to give it my best shot. I just wanted to tell everyone Hi and Good Luck to all of you.

Midnight AIM Chat + Kick Off Pictures

Hey guys! We're almost there! I am SO excited.

Halloween is going to drain almost every ounce of energy I have, but it's tradition for me to start writing at midnight on November 1st. I'll be on AIM, probably with a chat created, so we can talk a bit and then squee about our measly word counts before going to bed. (We could squee on the forums, but I have a feeling that as slow as the site has been, it's going to be worse on the first as everyone logs in to update their word count.)

If you’re scoping out the Memphis forums, you should probably set your regional affiliation to Memphis. The amazing, fantabulous KICK OFF PARTY - ADDENDUM

What is it? The Kick Off Party is a chance to meet your fellow Wrimos and pump each other up for the upcoming challenge. We'll have games and prizes and a great time.

When is it? Saturday, October 27th at 5:30 pm. I expect it'll run 'til at least 8:00, but probably longer. There will be stuff going on all night, so if you need to be fashionably late, don't sweat it.

Where is it? Kara and I will be hosting it in my home. I live off of Winchester between Hacks Cross and Forest Hill-Irene. Anyone who RSVPs in the affirmative will get a PM with my address and directions. Please note that I do own a dog, but he isn't invited to the party. On the crazy chance that we get RSVPs from more people than can comfortably fit in my apartment, the location may change, but the date and time will stay the same.

Can I bring anything? Yes, you can! We've decided to go pot luck this year. So if you're willing and able, please bring some kind of snacky food or drink. Also, when you RSVP, please let us know what you're bringing so we can put it on the list and we don't end up with, for example, twenty bottles of Sprite and nothing to eat. If you can't bring anything, again, don't sweat it.

Can I bring a friend/a date/my kids? What if they're not doing NaNo? Novel supporters are more than welcome to attend. This is an all-ages, alcohol and smoke-free event. Just be sure to let us know how many you're bringing when you RSVP. *Please note that while non-Wrimos are welcome to fun, food and games, only Wrimos will be eligible for prizes and goodie bags.*

ADDENDUM: It has been brought to my attention that I forgot the costume aspect of the kick off party. I didn't actually forget it, so much as deliberately not include it because I didn't think people cared. Apparently I was wrong, sooooo, if you would like to wear a costume to the kick off you are welcome and encouraged to do so. The catch is, the costume should be something or someone from your novel. If it's not, that's fine too, just expect to be badgered about it. "We don't CARE that you're writing a bunny version of Pride and Prejudice. You dressed as Groucho Marx and we expect to see him in your novel!" ;)

And now, to go find a costume...
