*gumbles* Stupid should-be-but-isn't MC....

... The character of Morgaine le Faye in her truest nature, from the accounts I've read, portrays her as being rather evil and largely uncaring person. She used Athur, knowingly or unknowingly for her own gain, and then sought to have her son installed on the throne.

Mordred, I'm a little sketchy on, but I tend to think that with him having had anything to do with Morgaine le Faye, she would have aimed to teach him any tricks that she could. Putting him in a similar position as Morgaine. Evil.

So when it comes to Mordred's wife and twin sons, you can imagine that they would also lean towards the mean spirited, selfish category, right?

But for the life of me, for some 50 odd pages in my novel, these characters are neither selfish nor mean. And the boys, well they barely get a mention.
,
Now of course, there's no way that I can re-write 50 odd pages, there is after all some good dialogue, etc, and even when December comes, I don't want to find myself with a book that is virtually useless.

I'm thinking of maybe playing it off that she possible realised that she would have to pitch in and provide whatever she could to help with the settlement, and have her grow a little more mean spirited after she finds herself a pawn to the Sidhe's plans.

She is after all the elder of the group. The rest of them are between the ages of about 15-22, while she's 36.

I keep finding myself cringing when I am writing the lines of Morgain le Faye, Modred and Cywythog.....

*pouts* It's just not fair. I always find myself at the mercy of my characters, they tend to do as they please ..... a lot.

I just wrote something I loved

Mostly, over the past few days, when I happen to catch what I have just written, I cringe. Some of it's OK. But most of it is either too overly expositiony, or too this-is-something-I-need-to-expand-later,-make-it-sound-vague-and-important-now or very characterless dialogue - a lot of characters dialogue are boring information dumps, or repetitive bad bad writing. But today, today my two MCs just had a conversation that ... well they actually had one that wasn't a plot dump or there to boost my words. They talked. And they very quietly don't hate each other any more, and this time I believed it. And it was awesome.
Main Characters....and other dirty word count tricks?

Well I thought I'd share a little about my main character. She went from being known by one single name, to being known by three.

The character in question was Morgaine, and is now Morgaine le Faye. Always, there is no exception. And yes, she is the historical Morgan le Faye out of the Arthurian Legends. She and a band of others get transported to an alternate world.
What happens when editing is for December...

... you find your novel is punctuated with paragraphs of text with a strikethrough to define it as an error, and in the spirit of Nanowrimo, you think twice about backspacing even a single word you may have changed your mind about.

Yes, this is my novel, and I am guilt of crossing out single words and replacing them with something more appropriate as I am writing.

Sadly it only occurred to me to use the "track changes" feature in word, at around day 3 which would have accomplished the same thing. Oh well, I'll leave that sort of thing until the editing process in December. Or maybe January.

*a.k.a. Stuff What You Didn't Know About Your MC And Just Found Out Now

As I was writing today, I discovered that my MC a) loves history (of which I know very little! Why couldn't she be interested in something I don't need to research?), b) will argue her way out of taking the blame for anything, and c) has no actual friends.

(These things are not necessarily related!)

Anyone else want to share any character/plot twists? I know it's only day three, but that's time enough for those sneaky buggers to get their own way already, I reckon :D

I've come to a realisation

OK, this is about the sixth or seventh time I've attempted NaNoWriMo, and the best I've done is around 15000 words. I /always/ sabotage myself by stating that nobody would ever read it, so what's the point of writing it. I come back the next year, hoping that this year would be the year that the novel would be read.
It's taken this long to realise that nobody will read this novel, but THAT IS THE POINT! This is not about writing a book to get published and be adored by trillions. No, this is about the craft of writing, and the whole crux of the matter is the writing, not the story.
With this realisation, I suddenly feel as though an entire universe has been lifted off of my shoulders, and I am freed of the burden of trying to craft for others. Now I am crafting solely for myself....

Nobody will read this novel and aren't I happy about that?

Neil
I think I love my novel

I dont have a plan at all... but its wonderful cos my MC seems to have very similar interests as me, and things are just all falling into place...

has a problem... she takes girl to ballet, sits down to wait, finds a magazine that has some answers for her....

2 Days ago I had no idea what was going to happen.. :)

So yes, Im in love with my characters and how they are quite happily going about their own little lives without any input from me :D

Im sure it may change later in the game, give me a week or two, but so far, so good. And Im happy so long as I get to my target for the day then I can happily stop writing for the day, with a few notes on where it was going. :)
----------
Im a photographer, not a novelist... what have I let myself in for?!
Ive been inspired...

Either that or Im finding more ways to procrastinate!

I LOVE having a word limit to make each day, for a set period. Rather than just spending 2 hours writing 700words, full of editing, I love thinking to myself "No, I need to have another 2000 words" and I actually get it done!

So, in the spirit of keeping a fire under me, and cos I love looking at that graph on my NaNo Stats, Ive made my own Excel spreadsheet up, complete with graph!

From now on, and for the rest of my novels, Im going to use this as a way to get to my targets! Ive made it 2000 words a day, for 2 months. I know it doesnt have to be that big, but I figured its a good way to keep me writing for my fantasy novels. And if it goes over, then I can always split it into series. :)

So, what have you been inspired to do, other than just write? How have you procrastinated, but assured yourself it was a good thing!? :)
Personal Word Count Goals

It occurred to me a little earlier tonight that there might be some of us that have their own personal goals that they wish to complete during November aside from the obligatory 50k worth of words.

Mine, started off simply being the accomplishment of 50k words, as it is every year, since I first began doing Nanowrimo in 2005. But sometime during Day #2 after finishing Day #1 with 5000 words to my name, I decided I might try and make a go of attempting 5k words each day until I hit 50k. And continue on with that goal as long as the plot holds. Depending on whether I or the plot burn out first, will dertermine if I can keep up the 5k per day for 30 days... but I will give it my best shot.

Okay, any other masochistic Perthies out there?

Hi everyone,

How did it get to be October already, for a start? We're back, for another NaNo. I'm Elaine, I'm the ML for Perth :: North. I'll be making a post soon with The Plan for the month of November, to give you an idea of what the write-ins will be, and when we'll be getting together before it all starts.

For now, let's all say hi!

Hi!

I'm Elaine, I've been doing NaNo stubbornly for mumblemumble years. I love it.

Third Write In.

Hey everyone,

Well, I've volunteered to run the third write in as our lovely ML will be in Japan.

So do people have a preference for Saturday or Sunday? The crowd at the write in here seem to prefer Sunday, but I think they might be a little biased.

No, no no noooooooo!

*sighs in frustration* I was just reading over my last paragraph, realising again that the focus on characters had once again shifted to Cerridwen eating her dinner, and had the intense desire to start my novel over. I refuse to do so however, but it's still bugging me. I think I introduced too many characters in this years story. It's a group of 23. 6 of them children. There are 8 married couples, and one single woman. It's moderate but I'm going to have to start breaking things up, if I'm going to follow more than one "point of view".

My novel is written in third person omniscient however, so I as the author know all, and tend to share all with the reader.

:(

I feel a little dishearted. My novel works, but my novel formatting sucks.
