[rant]That I throw in the towel for NaNo this year. :( I don't have the time and energy to be able to keep writing how much I need, and do all the TAFE stuff I need. So rather than drive myself into the ground trying to get NaNo done as well, I've decided to focus more on what's more important to me this year, music. I still plan to attend the games night if I can, and the TGIO party, 'cause you guys are all awesome, I'm just being a piker. :(

Which was a really hard decision to come to due to my unbroken record thus far. A record I will never be able to fix. Part of me hates myself for it, the other part says good. 'Cause I don't wanna burn out from doing too much like I did end of last year. Heh. [/rant]

So either way, good luck to everyone else!

I accidently ended my novel

I've been happily rocketing along and was thrilled that I was approaching 40,000 word count and then it happened... caught me completely by surprise - I wrote the end of my novel and I love it but I'm 10,000 short. Ahhhh! Now I've to got to go back, break my no edit rule and write 10,000 words of filler!

Tell me about Brisbane in 1976

Please help! I was only six in 1976, and while that does help me write some of the setting and context for my 1976 novel, my characters are finding it all a bit staid.

If you happen to know anything about Brisbane city around that time, eg Cloudland, The Bellvue Hotel, popular pubs and hangouts, live venues, underworld, Royal Brisbane Hospital, University of Queensland, 4ZZZ radio, The Saints (the band), the Bjelke-Peterson government and its police force, PLEASE SHARE. I'd love to know more and can't find enough information to progress my story.

So, I've been putting off starting Nano until today - I had an exam this morning.

When I came to it, I can't STAND my idea. There's no plan, it needs more something; basically my writing needs to suck less. Therefore, I have a new idea. And I'm writing blind. YAY! Or not.

Hello everyone!

November is about to start. Our fingers are twitching towards empty pages, and we're all hoping that our minds are not equally blank when the 1st finally rolls around.

Never fear! You can come and write with the rest of us crazy, over-caffeinated, page-battling wrimos. Exchange commiserations, encouragement, and ideas, or just chat. Indulge in word wars or just kick back in good company for a while.

We have a full calendar of events this month! Our first write-in is tomorrow, on the fearful 1st November.

Games night anyone?

Greetings fellow nano-ers! Lady V and I were chatting at the KOP and came upon a fantastic idea.

Let's have a games night! Board games, improvisational games, games that we make up on the spot just because they sound like fun, the possibilities are endless. And if you're like me, later this month you'll feel the need for a bit of stress-relieving distractions.

For this to work, we need to figure out a few things. One, who's interested? Two, any ideas on where we can hold said games night? I would happily offer my place but unfortunately it can hold a maximum of 10 people. Once we find a place we can start worrying about the time.

Let the games begin!

Northside Write In #2 -- Nundah

Hello again!

In order to avoid confusion I'm starting a new post for this week's northside write-in. As last week's was small but good so I have high hopes for this one :D.

Date: Thursday 19th from 4pm-9pm.
Address: Unit 3, 10 Surrey St, Nundah 4012. If I don't see you as you walk in, you may need to buzz the door. My apartement is directly above the garages so just come on up.
It's about 5min walk from Nundah train station and even closer to Sandgate road if you're taking a bus. There is also lots of on street parking.
Bring: drinks/snacks, money for dinner (there are a few options) and a powerboard/strip plug (if possible)

If anyone needs directions, send me a message. I already have two RSVPs, thank you Foxorama and Yuuchan. Just let me know if you are interesed so I can guage numbers. I'll still cap it at 12 but as we didn't even come close to that I don't think it'll be a problem. I look forward to seeing you there!

Light-Hearted Write-Ins?

Hey all,
just a query: is anyone planning a fun/light-hearted write-in (or several) this year?
I remember a few years ago when AFK was still open, and 20+ people gathered to share plots/ideas, jokes, give advice & support & generally have a grand old time. Admittedly, AFK is gone now, with it's bottomless coffee (dagnabit), but I'd like to put the idea up for consideration again.
I'm all for the serious gathers, with a room of dedicated typers going hellabunny for leather, don't misunderstand me. :-)
I'd just like to see some of us at a write-inwith more emphasis on the socialising while writing, you know: getting to know our fellow writers, etc.

Of course, now I've suggested this, I'll probably be organising it, heh.

Southside Write-in - Morningside

Our southside write-in went well last year, so we're holding another one this year. This time it's at my house, out the back where we can both plug in and relax in style (weather-permitting).

On: Wednesday 4th November, 12:30pm - 10pm
Address: 15 Mornington Crescent, Morningside, 4170
5-10 minute walk from Morningside train station (Cleveland line).
Plenty of parking outside and in front of the park beside the house.
Bring: drinks/snacks, money for pizza (dinner), powerboard/strip plug (if possible)

If anyone needs directions, drop me a line. Everyone's welcome, so feel free to drop by anytime between those times on Wednesday. We'll be doing a mass pizza-order for dinner, so please bring enough for that!

I'm quitting my novel...

I can't take the crap of my novel anymore, I'm at the half way point and am tragically not happy with the directions it's going in, I feel like I've taken 50 000 words to say what could have easily been said in 30 000. So I am throwing in the towel on it and I am so starting a new project.

My brain hurts less already.

Now that I have made that decision and am already over the 50K mark, I shall spend the next three weeks being the Whip Cracking ML that I've always wanted to be since I was a young lass of 22.
Come on everyone for 50K... woo! *snap snap*

Week 2

How's everyone going after the second week has ended? Me, I have 10,001 words. Not bad, at least for me, considering last year's total was 6000-something. My goal is at least 12,000 to double last year's effort in close to the same amount of time (I had a mere 2 weeks). I've attended 2 write-ins, and I know where the KOP is held now (even if I did get there right as it was officially ending). I've drunken NO coffee (but copious amounts of coca cola... that's my coffee-like addiction, and I want to get rid of it). I've met... a few people. Jordan in real life (finally), Kess (who (whom?) I recognised from the Pancake Manor disaster last year), Susannah, and a few others not once but twice (3 in Jordan's case). I'm pretty happy with myself so far, and my sense of accomplishment just keeps growing with each milestone, goal, mini-milestone and mini-goal I reach! It's a wonderful feeling, and I hope everyone else is experiencing even a little bit of what I am - making friends, reaching goals, needing corrective therapy for your fingers...

We've decided to be a bit dispersed in our writein's this year so it's time for a northside one. This one is at my place, it's small but cosy. So come along on Tuesday 10th from 4pm-9pm.

Young Writer's Program

I'm running a Young Writer's Program group at the school I teach at. I was just curious if anyone else is doing a similar thing, or has a YWP happening at their school (for the under 18's amongst us)?

It's been great watching the students get behind the program, and they've already started putting my word count to shame (not hard when it's still sitting on a big fat zero...).

My computer ate my homework

I can't believe it. This is my first year doing NaNoWriMo, and I am super motivated, but my computer died about a week ago and stupid me... I didn't backup my story. The good news is I was able to recover my story and am back on track now but I feel like I'm waaaayyyy behind on the word count (which i am).
I need motivation please people. I like my story. I like how contrived my plot is, and I like how cliched my characers are, but I'm so far behind... won't someone motivate me!?!?

Creative Writing Group

Hello everyone!

As some of you know, I run a Creative Writing Group in the CBD once a month. Our next meeting us coming up this week.

The details are:

On: Friday 13th November, 5:30pm - 6:45pm
At: American Bookstore, Elizabeth Street, Brisbane CBD
Bring: Paper and a pen

Everyone is welcome, so feel free to come along! We won't be doing NaNo-related stuff - this is a chance to take a break from the novelling. We usually do a mix of writing exercises, workshopping, talks, author talks, and tutorials. This month, we'll be doing an exercise or two, flexing our pens and hopefully having some fun.

Afterwards, a group of us usually heads somewhere for dinner to chill out and chat. You're all welcome to join us for that too!

Just a quick note to let everyone know that there has been some shuffling on the write-in front. The Google calendar at the top of the forums has been updated, so check that and make sure you have the right dates for everything.

Summary of changes:

Some of the central Coffee Club Milton write-ins have shifted dates.

Write-in at Wellington Point added.

Couple of write-ins at Morningside added.

I'll be sending out the weekly event updates by email to everyone, so keep an eye on the emails for the latest dates, times and locations!
