Final Write In?

We have one more weekend before November is over. I say that calls for the LAST write in in our region. Yes?

I'm open to any and all ideas.
Writing style

As I start writing tonight I was wondering how everyone starts their novels.

Do you:

A) Start writing at the beginning on the story and follow it chronologically.

B) Write out of order. Whichever scene comes at you first.

c) Type in your notes and fill in the details later when the moment hits you.

Happy writing
----------

page 100, anyone?

Hey folks,

Here's an idea that I remembered from last year: If you're on a 50K pace, you ought to be at 30K by the end of today. My goal is 100K, so you can see I'm a couple thousand words behind, but anyway... in my case, 30K occurs on page 100.

So if you want, post the first few paragraphs on page 100 of your story. This will demonstrate that you've made it to page 100, and give all of us in the region a small taste of what others are writing.

Ready? Here's mine:

Quote:

“Perhaps from Munich? Something developed by the Bavarian Kraftengesellschaft?” said Molina.

“Nonsense – the man is no more Bavarian than he is Spanish,” said Aker Velez.

“He could pass for Germanic – and in any case, agents of espionage are chosen for and trained in this very thing – remaining inconspicuous and not betraying one’s origins.”

“The man is the opposite of inconspicuous, Quilo – with his ridiculous instrument and the collection of rags he seems to consider clothing, this vagabond does not so much stand out in a crowd as draw attention to himself in such a way that the entire remainder of the crowd goes unnoticed.”

As you can see, it's just a snippet of random silliness, so no one should worry if their paragraphs don't exactly shine with brilliance, okay? It's understood that this is just first draft text. Anyone else care to participate?

----------
Surge of energy, spark of inspiration.

USA :: Florida :: Palm Beaches

Saturday Write-In?

Just thought I'd bring this convo up from underneath the Wellington one for clarity's sake.

A summary of what happened on the previous page:
Alexandria proposed it originally for Saturday the 21st, to be held on the Starbucks on Southern Blvd just west of 441. areck says she could make it if were in the afternoon. I replied that I can make it as well, at any time, but would like to know the time anyway. Alexandria said at 3 pm but running all afternoon.

I'd like to start with this one saying that I can make it earlier on Saturday, if anyone wants to get there sooner than 3 pm. I know it's tomorrow, but maybe we can get this organized in a day?? lol

I will continue to check back on this thread often all day today and tomorrow, so leave a message if you wanna go and I am likely to respond to it.
Roaming Boca

If anyone is insterested, tomorrow I am going to be roaming around the FAU area of Boca Raton (Glades Rd). I am taking care of some business that could take up some time or be done quick. Regardless, I am bringing my laptop and may park myself at the B&N on Glades next to the university to do some writing.

If anyone is in the area and has free time, feel free to meet me there. I'll be wearing a green shirt, probably. I also wear rimless glasses, have (poofy) brown hair combed back, and will probably be showcasing my week ol' stubble.

I know this is sudden, but I just thought it would be nice to put the word out.
Wellington Write-In?

I wasn't sure if anyone was interested in doing a write-in at the B&N near the Wellington Green Mall. I was thinking maybe Saturday. I can't be there until 2:00, but it can go later or earlier as others want. I'll probably be there no matter what, but just wanted to see if anyone else cared to join me.
Palm Beaches vs. Ft. Lauderdale!

Here is the current status:

At the time I'm posting this, the word count widgets are still not working, but I have high hopes that they will be soon, and then we should see the our progress bars above.

However, on day 1 of our friendly competition, I am happy to report that our region stats show the following:

Palm Beaches: 117,004 words (3,342 per Wrimo with wordcount)
Ft. Lauderdale: 48,812 words (1,952 per Wrimo with wordcount)

So we're off to a great start - keep up the good work!

Monday or Tuesday Write-In?

I know someone requested this and that a few people probably will not be able to make it to today's write in (Sunday) in Jupiter.

On Monday (but hopefully not on Tuesday), I will be at FAU for a little while trying to get some job references. I could join some people for a write in if we do it in Boca. If we're lucky, we can colonize one of the tables in the northeastern corner of the second floor that is designated as the "FAU Lounge" or study room or whatever.

Anyway, that's where I'll be on Monday regardless of NaNoWriMo plans. I just thought maybe the two could converge?
North/West Palm Beach Write-in?

Does anybody live near North/West Palm Beach? All the write-ins so far have been out of my comfort zone (I'd get lost) and I'd really like to go to one before the month is out!

Is anyone up for a write-in at the Barnes and Noble in Legacy Place near Fairchild? Or any bookstore in my neck of the woods? I know there's one in West Palm Beach too. There's also a bunch of libraries. Anything?

I long to engage in this meaningful tradition where a bunch of people meet up to ignore each other, type frantically, and lean over to lap up coffee ever so often.

Nemo out.
Jupiter/Gardens Write In?

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to participate in a Jupiter Write In I'm planning. I talked with a Joe Muggs (coffee shop in Books a Million) employee and he said it would be no problem if I hosted a write in there.

It's in Chasewood Plaza which is in Jupiter but if you it only takes about 15 minutes to commute from Palm Beach Gardens if you take I-95. I'll post more detailed directions if people are interested.

I was thinking this Sunday, the 8th, but if that isn't a good day I can push it back to the next weekend.

Open to any and all suggestions :) I attended a write-in for my second NaNo and thought it was so much fun so I'd love to organize one this year. ^_^

As if writing a novel in a month isn't pressure enough, I'm blogging daily about the experience at www.donnagephart.blogspot.com.
Introduce Yourself, Palm Beaches!

Alright, our board is look mighty lonely right now. I think anyone from the Palm Beaches should take a moment and introduce themselves.

My name's Amanda. I used to work in the horse business in Wellington, but a bad injury last year means I can't really ride anymore (at least not at the same level). So now I'm trying to go back to school and I'm working part time in a retail position. At least it leaves me with plenty of time for NaNo. :) I have pretty eclectic tastes with what I like to read and write. This year I'm doing a space opera, using an idea I've had in the back of my mind for years now, but never really executed.

Floor's open, fellow novelists!
Reviewing Excerpts

Hello!

I know there is a thread like this on the Fantasy forums, and probably on other genre forums as well, but that can get chaotic and messy. With so many people posting, sometimes at the same time, some people get more than one review, and others get skipped. I think with hour smaller numbers here, it wouldn't happen. Also, since we're from the same region, it wouldn't be a bad idea to help each other out.

Basically, post an excerpt of your novel so far in the Novel Info section. Then come here and review the excerpt of the person that posted last. That's it. Excerpts can be long, short, your best work, something you're not sure is good. Whatever. The only policy is honesty when it comes time to review. Point out the problems if any, give praise if needed, but be honest and helpful.
What's your new Novel idea for this year??

Well, as I said in my previous post. The book I had been working on last year this time was completely lost due to my pc hardrive crash. It's toast! I have not pursued trying to re-write or anything like that. So, with that being said. I still have the jist of it in my head still. So, it will be like starting from scratch with a new idea. It's a Sci-Fi, which is one of my favorite genres to read in and my other favorite genre being Fantasy. I want to start over with it this year and hopefully be able to finish it! :) Its about a astro physicist who discovers something mysterious and very unusual possibly surrounding our planet. "The Umbilical" is the title I have given it, and I'm very excited at the prospect of getting it finished and making it into a real book that I would like to see in the books stores someday! :) In this past year the little writing I have done has been in poetry, which I also really like to delve into and use to express myself. Haven't pursued any novels this past year. Things have been so hectic for me getting settled into a new place and all. Take care and God Bless you all! :)
Write-ins?

I was wondering if we had any plans (or vague desires) to meet up on the first and do a bit of a write in? I've never been in one as this is my first year on NaNo, but I wouldn't mind meeting other people and sharing our mutual (schizo-like) energy.
Is anyone else having problems with the nanowrimo site loading?

All day today the site has been loading soooo slow. Anyone else seeing this or is it just me? Maybe it's normal, I don't know, this is my first year :-)

Pen Names, Anyome?

Okay, so I'm interested in what everyone/anyone has picked to be their pen-names, if you have them at all.

I have a pen-name, because Dayan Martinez just feels weird for a fantasy/sci-fi writer. So, I used the first name I was going to have for 9 months before I was born (my mom changed her mind), and the last name I actually did have for the first 6 months of my life (mother's maiden). And then I added a lower case "d" with an apostrophe to leave something of my current legal name in there.

d'Halley Casasús. At your service! :P

What about youuuuuurs?
Welcome Palm Beach County writers: A Tale of Two Regions '09

Hey folks,

Looks like we might be ML-less again this year, but I expect we'll have an active group of writers regardless!

If you were here last year, you may remember we had a friendly word count competition between our region and Ft. Lauderdale. It was a very close competition, and the Broward folks came out ahead in the end. But we led for at least a week or so, and in fact on average words per writer, we led for the entire month, and ended up with 3k more per writer!

So I've proposed it again this year, and I think (hope) it will again help motivate some of us in both regions to meet our word count goals.

The two regions are normally pretty evenly populated - at the moment we're both showing twenty-something active members (meaning we've logged in already this year). Note that the "author search" is not accurate at this point - at least as far as the number of writers in a particular home region - but the tech forum says they're investigating the issue.

Anyway, who's up for the challenge? When we get close to November 1st, I'll start a new topic with the "region war" widget so we can keep track of our progress and theirs. Hope everyone's ready for a fun and busy month of writing!

Chris
