on a lark I peeked at the stats. our words are in the MILLIONS.

Well yeah, if there's x number of us, and admittedly I'm crazy and a little ahead with 17k atm, but...MILLIONS!

Much more of this and i'm going to sound like Carl Sagan. BILLIONS...and BILLIONS.

*wow*

Right then, back t' writin'. *taptaptap*
NaNoWriMo: A brief talk about donations

As one of the two ML in the region, I suppose it is my duty to cheer on the cause of the donation part of NaNoWriMo. If anyone has seen me in person you know that I don’t think I would look good in a cheerleader outfit; I’m more of the fan with the foam finger type of person. But just as the hard workers of public radio have to make fools of themselves every membership drive, I too need to step up to the plate and make the sales pitch.

According to the regional stats, “7.54% of Wrimos in this region have donated 565.00 so far (thank you!)” I thank you and Chris Baty (the big boss of NaNoWriMo whose name is really similar to mine) thanks you.

But, (you knew this was coming) considering our membership size the current average donation is $2.38 which is lower than last years average of $2.41. That means we are pretty low on the Donation Derby (I think that’s where donations run around on a track and crash into each other). I should point out, merely because I’m sure our former Long Islander would gloat about it, that Hawaii is second on the list for our category of regions, having gone from $5.04 to $12.09. (Talk about a Hawaiian Punch!)

So, (here comes the pitch) I know times are tough, but buddy can you spare a Hamilton? A $10 donation single-handedly powers our mighty servers for three hours, which is three more hours of inspiring kids and adults to write their next masterwork. It would make you a cherished friend and give you a halo on your profile.

And remember; please pay no attention to the fact that we are actually whipping Madison Wisconsin in the derby portion ($3.16 in 2008 and $2.57 in 2009) because in absolute numbers we are still lower than they are in 2009. Let’s beat last year’s average of $2.41 per person and pass their current year’s average of $2.57

Can we do it? YES WE CAN!

South Shore Writers?

I would love to attend a Write In with some fellow writers, but Old Westbury and Port Jeff are too far. So is Patchogue, though it's a little better than the others. Anybody writing in the Babylon/Bay Shore area and interested in meeting up to write in either village?
What genre are you writing?

I'm very curious (and looking for support from other YA writers), as to what everyone else is writing. Sometimes it's a lot of fun to pick the brains of other writers of the same genres.

I myself am writing Young Adult - realistic fiction (since there are many subgenres). I'm a young adult librarian at one of my job (children's at the other), and since picking up my first YA book as an adult (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) I have been hooked on the genre, and truly enjoy writing it. The only year I finished Nano was the year I did YA (last year), so I'm sticking with the winning formula.

How about the rest of this beautiful island?
Stony Brook Writers!

Since there seems to be a good number of SBU-related people in the intro thread (and who knows how many lurkers) doing NaNo this year, I think a separate topic is in order before we hijack the main introductions thread.

So lets start off with a disclaimer: I've won NaNo the past two years, but other than that, I am clueless about write-ins and meet-ups and that sort of stuff. Plus I'm also only a commuter and a freshman, so I definitely do know know everything there is about the campus. Your input is greatly appreciated!

Locations: The Starbucks in the Union may seem like the most attractive place, since caffeine and frantic writing seem to be a match made in heaven, but as pointed out in the intro thread it gets rather loud, plus it can get really insane at times.

There are other places in the Union that may work out (there's the lounge on the first floor, and then some extra places on the second) and while they do get crowded sometimes they aren't as bad as the Starbucks, but as far as I know there aren't many outlets there.

The lounge in the SAC might work out, especially since it has a lot of outlets and some nice couches and chairs, but it also gets crowded at times.

I really don't know of anywhere else though, but if you have any ideas, I'm sure they'd be appreciated. (Discovering new things on campus is always fun!)

Times: I usually have 10:30-12:50 free every day, and most evenings 5-6:30 before I catch 6:47 train. Though when basketball season start, I'll probably be stuck on campus for more time in the evenings until the game starts since I'm in marching band. I probably won't be on campus during the weekends, excluding days I have to do something for band. And if I pass my road test on the 13th, I'll basically be able to stay as late as I want or show up on the weekends, so my schedule shouldn't be that much of a road-block.
The battle with Madison Wisconsin

Day 14: Us 2,676,792; them 2,643,735; advantage us!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since we are winning, we need to sing a good Long Island song. Alas I don’t know many but here is one I do know.

When trumpets were mellow
And every gal only had one fellow
No need to remember when
'Cause everything old is new again

Dancin' at church, Long Island jazzy parties
Waiter bring us some more Baccardi
We'll order now what they ordered then
'Cause everything old is new agian

Get out your white suit, your tap shoes and tails
Let's go backwards when forward fails
And movie stars you thought were alone then
Now are framed beside your bed

Don't throw the pa-ast away
You might need it some rainy day
Dreams can come true again
When everything old is new again

And remember, keep the word count flowing!

Mid W ay Meeting RSVP Thread

We will be having the mid way meet up at the Book Revue, 313 New York Avenue, Huntington NY 11743 this Friday (13 – lucky you) at 6:30 PM. We will most likely meet in that little area on the second floor as you walk up the stairs that are near the entrance. (I’ll get there early and reserve either the table or one of the comfy chairs.) We can then go over to Canterbury Ales if people are hungry. The Book Revue also has a book signing at 7:00 PM.

I just want to get general estimates of who is thinking of comming to this event. You can reply to the thread or PM me.
The Best Writing/Creative Advice You've Collected

I've recently begun keeping files with bits and pieces of advice I've read or heard from some of my favorite writers and artists. I'll never use all of it, of course, but like to go through it now and then as it may hold an answer to a particular problem. This is the the one that's been on my mind most this year:

Get it down, change it later.

It was posted by Marc Gascoigne, the Publishing Director of Angry Robot Books in one of SF Signal's Mind Melds (a cool feature on the site where they ask a panel of professionals from publishing one question and post the answers they receive). This is a simple concept yet difficult for me to achieve because I tend to edit as I write. In my view it's a bad habit to be in, and something I'm striving to correct. I hope this, my first NaNo, will in part break me of that tendency. And also, you know, get me a decent first draft. My issues with commas, run on sentences and parentheticals is another matter entirely.

Anyway, that's the best advice I've read recently, what have the rest of you got?

- Christian
http://manakalita.blogspot.com/

P. S. For those curious what else that particular article had to offer (there was a lot of good stuff) here it is:
http://www.sfsignal.com/archives/2009/01/mind-meld-shrewd-writing-advice...

Nassau?

Hi everyone! Although I've been registered with NaNoWriMo since 2006, this is the first year I'm going to actively participate lol i've got my workbook from Chris Baty at the ready with a blank notebook and pen.

I've been reading some of the recent posts that were emailed to me about meeting up and working together... sounds great, but you're all in Suffolk- and way out in Suffolk at that! I'm in Nassau and don't drive, not to mention I'm 8 months pregnant, so I can't travel far and wide for a get together.

Was wondering if there were interested parties closer to me in Bethpage who would like to meet up for support and whatnot?

Looking forward to hearing from you :)
Lynne

I was asked to participate in a "Knight at the Races" for a local Knights of Columbus fundraiser. One of the things I did was to name one of the horses in the race. I called him "50K Words in a Month." He won the race.

If he can, you can. Let's all make that 50K word goal!
Not exactly a “write in”

But in between walking in my rented bowling shoes and throwing a lane 12# XL bowling ball down the alley, I will be writing my novel at the AMF Smithtown Lanes, 200 Landing Ave, from 7 PM until the three games end, on Thursdays.

Nassau County: Monday Nov. 2nd

Hi guys! I posted before, but I thought I would remind the other Nassau County Nano-ers.

I'll be starting my stressful uphill trek that is my 50K YA novel on:

Monday November 2nd at Borders.
I will be at the one in Westbury on Old Country Road at 6:30-8:30 (probably a little earlier than that).

For those of you who are interested, send me a msg so I don't sit at a single person table and get a bigger one. Also, if there are more than one or two of us, I can bring Nano candy! (It's sugar fuel to help with the initial burst of creative energy)

If I dont see any of you guys, Good luck with your writing! The final countdown has begun!
