Introduce yourselves!

Dear Adelaideans,

I regret to inform you that in 29 days, 8 hours 23 minutes and 37 seconds, all sanity will cease to exist. Over 100,000 people worldwide are going to take the plunge from dreamer to novelist. Some may never recover.

I’m hoping none of you do.

:)

WELCOME TO NANOWRIMO 2009! Where sanity is left at the door, real life ceases to exist, and the voices inside your head become your best friends.

I’m going to be honest. You’re crazy for doing this. But you’re also crazy if you don’t! Either way, you’re stuck. Here. With us. So you might as well make the best of it and introduce yourselves! Don’t be shy – there’s no point. Whether you’ve been here before or you’re just starting out, we love you already! Make new friends, reaquaint yourselves with old ones; by the end of the next two months we’re all going to be one crazy family anyway…

See you at the finish line!
[ML Announcement] Helpful Hints when organising a Write-In/Meet-Up

Organising a write-in and/or meet-up is a great way to meet fellow Wrimos but there are a few things that need to be remembered before jumping in the deep end, minor details really.

Given that we now have over 200 participants in the Adelaide Region (Yay!), Christina/queen.christina and I have devised a little information sheet that people can use (or you can create one similar) when organising a write-in. This is just to save confusion and to make it easier for people to pull out the specifics of the write-in.

In the subject line be specific with something eye catching like:
WRITE-IN - Day, Date, Time (obviously this will be the day, date and time of your write-in or meet up)

Where:(where it will be, with a meeting point if needed)
Date:
Time:(start and finish if necessary)
Map/How to get there:(just in case you think people will have trouble finding it)
Details:(things like where to park and whether there are bus stops nearby. You could also include your mobile number or how to get in contact for late/lost people, and anything else that needs mentioning like whether you can buy food or bring food. Include details about extra powerboards/extension cords and other stuff too)

You can also search on https://hotspot.internode.on.net/coverage/ for somewhere or remember that McDonalds and a few other places have free wireless for those that would like internet access during a write-in.

Make sure to include your name so people can ask you questions about things if they need to.

We encourage you to organise your own write-ins if you can’t make ours, our location doesn’t appeal to you or for whatever reason. There are plenty of good locations to be found and if you’re unsure about it post it up anyway and get some feedback!

If you PM Christina or myself we can put your write-in or meet-up on the regional calendar for everyone to see. :-)
Remember Nanowrimo is all about fun so make sure you budget for some at every write-in and meet-up!

Strange things you never thought you'd ever research

It occurs to me that last night I spent the better part of two hours researching a topic which I honestly have no interest in personally. The School of American Ballet, the New York City Ballet, and the theatre that the two use, the David H. Koch Theatre. For the life of me, I never thought I would ever reach a point in my life where I would be researching a ballet company, but there you have it, for the world to see, I was reduced to researching Ballet for my novel.

I was just wondering if anyone else has found themselves researching something they never thought they would ever look at in all of their lives.

For those lucky people who don't know, tonight is Australian Idol's grand final. And it has given, me at least, the chance to post a serious word count. As much as I begged otherwise, my brother's watching it, which means I DEFINITELY won't be in the lounge room tonight! Thank god for terrible TV.
OFFICIAL WRITE-IN/MEET UP - Saturday, 21st November @ 2pm

Alrighty! We're in week 3 people which means we need just as much writing as relaxing and hopefully we can squeeze both into this weekend!

Stina and I have been talking and discussing and we've come up with a New Plan for the write-in this weekend. We're going to make it part Meet Up. How good is that? We've noticed that the short time at the end of a write-in isn't really enough for some people and three hours of writing is too much for some, me for one! This weekend we'll be at the same fab place, the same fab time but with a few changes! Read on, Wrimos!

Where: State Library on North Terrace
Date: Saturday, 21st of November
Time: 2pm
Map/How to get there:A short walk from the train station. Just head up the ramp, turn left, and continue walking past Parliament House. It's next to the museum with the fancy fountains and boggins of pigeons out front.

Details: There's plenty of parking within a short walking distance of the library. You'll need to look around to find the cheapest but it's all similar on a Saturday.

We'll be outside the library around 1:45pm and we'll wait there till 2pm and then head inside. If it's raining (LOL rain in adelaide) we'll be huddled just outside the library or just inside the doors. Look for people trying to talk someone out into the rain. If it's not raining we'll be near the grassy area out the front. You can't miss my leering.

I'll be bringing an extension lead with me and a powerboard but I would appreciate if someone has one free that they could bring it along just in case.

Now, with the way we're doing things this week, we're hopefully going to head in and find some furniture to monopolise. If we can't find any furniture we could head to the cafe for a while or to find somewhere else, maybe the floor or a nice rug. People can head into the cafe however they've indicated that having people on their laptops for long periods of time is not something they want so we'll work around that.

Since we won't be in the library itself we can bring lollies and goodies and our drinks into the area we'll be using. Bring your munchies and your hot chocolate/iced chocolate money for the cafe if you wish.

I can't wait for this write-in/meet up. It will be something different, new and please be patient if we need to sort out details on the day. ;)

Yeeks.

Pep talk from Tamora Pierce.

I'm vaguely in awe. I grew up reading her stuff. Heck, seeing that she was making a pep talk was part of what got me into nano. And now it's here, and I'm possibly being, just you know, a little overreactive, but ohmigod.

*squee*

I must fight the urge to save it and show it proudly to my friends

Must. Fight. Urge.

...not working.

and BTW. I love the ice cream analogy.

*melts again*

I'm not sure I can write another 700 words tonight after that.
ALL NIGHT WRITE IN - Friday, November 27th @ 7pm

WRITE-IN - Day, Date, Time (obviously this will be the day, date and time of your write-in or meet up)

Where: Bakery on Parade- 112 The Parade Norwood (Corner of the Parade and Osmond tce)
Date: Friday in November 27th
Time: from 7pm until just before we fall asleep. Last year we crashed around 2am.
Details: Those who have been there before, you know the deal. Write until you drop!
We're setting up camp in the corner booth, someone bring a power board, if we don't have enough points we'll take turns. Also bring sound blocking devices (MP3 player, ear plugs, industrial sized ear muffs) as this is a public area and sometimes it can get noisy, or one there will be one older woman who is happy drunk will sit down and take an hour to finish her meal, while talking loudly and laughing like a hyena.
There is coffee, cold drinks, cakes, pies, pasties on offer. Bring cash.

2 rules.
1) If you're driving, go home before you get too tired to drive. I don't want to be responsible for car accidents because you fell asleep at the wheel.
2) There are no toilets on site, so for safety we go in groups down to the servo.

Map/How to get there:
----------
NaNoWriMo- Day 3
Given up on current idea and going back to finish last years!

TALLAHASSEE WAR - Trash-talk thread!

Now that the whole world has started writing the War Hats have been activated. You will notice how your hat has changed from the generic black to a bright, hostile looking green, except Christina's, whose is pink. I don't know what happened there. This means you're in the war. Your wordcounts and donations will be pitched against those of Tallahassee, Florida.

This is where you can fling some good natured competition around and generally show off your amazing wordcount. You know you want to!

If you would also like to give them some competitive taunting here's their thread: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3346037 Please don't post in any of their other threads and likewise we'll keep ours occupied too.

There's only one rule: Play nice. No rude, or derogatory trash-talk should occur. This is all in FUN!

Let's show them how we can kick their butts!

Week 3 Pep Talk (from 2004)

Next installment!

"Dear Writer,

You remember the Week Two Wall I wrote about in my last email?

It's on its way down.

Yep. Each sentence we wrote in the past seven days was a mighty karate-chop to its bricks; each paragraph another crack in the mortar. The wall is toothless and teetering now; a relic that will soon exist only in history books and sepia-toned postcards hawked in the tourist traps by the ruins.

The way forward is clear, but we still have some work to do before reaching 50K. Most of us are lagging on our word counts, struggling to find the time and energy to get caught up. As we imagine the rigors of another two weeks of writing, we may be tempted to take a break and continue our novels next month, when our eyeballs have stopped doing that weird twitchy thing.

But I'll tell you this: Quit now, and you'll miss the best part of the whole adventure. You just spent two weeks paying your noveling dues. And Week Three is when payback begins.

And how! This week, the whole thing gets easier. The words will come more fluidly, and your characters will finally start pulling their own weight, solving plot dilemmas and spicy personal dramas in surprisingly readable ways.

This is also the point in the writing journey when we start hearing a certain far-off rumble. Veteran Wrimos will recognize the sound immediately. Those of you new to month-long noveling, though, should keep an ear on that sound. It's only going to get louder over the next two weeks, but it may be another 20,000 words or so before you hear the tumult for what it is.

It's the roar of your friends, family, and supporters waiting for you at the finish line. Everyone who has believed in you over the past month is there, cheering, clapping, screaming. All of them proud and excited, and all them waiting for that one ineffable moment when you round the final bend and come into view.

Just two more weeks, and you're there. For those of you on track with your word counts, just keep blazing ahead. For everyone else (and I include myself in this group), Week Three will serve as a convenient first chapter in our triumphant comeback stories.

Either way, the hardest part is over. And it just gets better and better from here.

Here's to a wonderful third week!

Chris
Keep writing, Team OPR!

I've used this before to see what words are most common in my blog and I thought I'd use it for my novel. http://www.wordle.net
You can see which words are the most used in your novel. And you can randomise how they appear, too! I haven't worked out any other way to get the image aside from print screen+paint but it's worth it!

Post yours. I'll even post mine first!

ETA: You can save it to the gallery and grab a link like this one below:

Thanks Riverwings!

It's great to randomise to see how different words jump out at you. Surely I'm not the only one craving a thesaurus now?
Damn laptop batteries

I just lost a *great* paragraph of work (a long one, too!), because my laptop's battery just conked out - JUST when I was about to press "Save", too! *headdesk*

My laptop is not faring well in this heat (and in its old age). I need a new laptop, Stat!

Just thought I'd share the bitterest of bitter ironies with you guys. :(
OFFICIAL WRITE-IN - Sunday, 15th November, 2pm

Cause we want you guys to make it! Here's another write-in! One slightly prepared earlier! SQUEE EVERYONE!

Where: State Library on North Terrace
Date: Sunday, 15th November
Time: 2pm till 5pm.
Map/How to get there: A short walk from the train station. Just head up the ramp, turn left, and continue walking past Parliament House. It's next to the museum.

Details: There's plenty of parking around if you prefer to drive. It's super cheap on Sundays as well.

We'll be in Study Room 1 (it's the massive glass room in the middle of the library). Go up one flight of stairs, past security(handbags and non-laptop bags will need to be checked at the security station) and you'll see several glass-walled rooms. See that massive one on the left? That's us!

Unfortunately food isn't allowed inside the library, however there is a cafe downstairs if you need a sugar or caffeine hit! We're also thinking that after the write-in, we'll head downstairs, grab some coffee and have some chill-out time on the grass if it's not ridiculously hot.

I will be at the library around 1:45pm. I'll be waiting out the front near the fountains. Look for the people with the laptop bags! (I might be leering and staring at people) I'll be heading inside at 2pm, so if you think you'll be late or might get lost, just PM me for my mobile number :)

Powerboards will be needed, so if you have a spare one lying about, please bring it! It will be greatly appreciated.

(I may have recycled Stina's post for this. Don't judge me!)

Mid Month Meet Up!

Wheeee! Mel and I promised you a mid month, so we're giving you a mid month! (Please ignore how terribly late this is. Lateness is all part of our charm. That's why you love us!)

Where: Red Rock Noodle Bar on Rundle St
Date: Friday 13th (gasssssssp)
Time: 7:30pm
Map/How to get there: Straight from Rundle Mall. Go past Hungry Jacks and you'll come across it eventually ;)
Details: Can't find us? Look for the people laughing as you walk back and forth while lost. :D

No, but seriously. While it is easy to find, if you do think you'll end up lost, feel free to PM either Mel (calliopes.sin) or myself for our mobile numbers. We'll unlose you!

If you prefer to drive, there's cheap parking after 6 in the carpark above Target, and after 7 in the UPark above Hungry Jacks.

Oh and guys... no laptops allowed. If I see any addicts trying to sneak theirs in, I will throw it out the window! (read: Mel will throw it out the window. No, really.) Friday night will be specifically about taking a break from the stress of our novels and just having some good ol' fun. Right? RIGHT.

ETA: I've booked our group under the name Christina. The guy didn't speak very good english so I didn't think it wise to torture him with 'NaNoWriMo!' ;)
