Second Official Write-in 2007

Back by popular demand I bring you...

The Second Write-In.

By now we should all be at a point where are characters have introduced themselves to us and proceeded to kick us in the shins and dictate their stories. Mine have. Mine have also hijacked the genre which, is best not discussed.

Last Saturday had such a great turn out that we had to relocate to a bigger room. I've booked the bigger room straight away this time around.

Date: Saturday, 10th November
Time:1pm till 5pm
Place: Room 5-15, City West UniSA Library.

The pageant will be on, but hopefully being at the other end of the city will save us from the chaos (except on public transport), so try to remember that if you are planning on driving in!

We are allowed to bring munchies into the room. Pretty much anything but hot food so feel free to bring along drinks and lollies and other writer-must-have-edibles. Just remember there will be laptops and powerboards around.

1 thing I feel I need to mention:
If catching public transport especially stuff that involves walking from King William or the Train Station there are trams running every 15 minutes or less, so if you don't feel like hauling a laptop around the city take the tram. I will be this week!

Map:

Directions:
As you can see from the picture we'll be in the library. If you think you'll have trouble finding it and want to go, PM me and I'll give you my mobile number incase you get lost or want directions.

If you are going to be late here is directions to where we will be:
Inside the library you can walk to the elevators (you can see them from the doors) take it to the 5th floor. Once on the 5th floor walk through the aisle of shelves ahead till you run out of books and there will be rooms on this wall. We will be in room 15. I will probably be one with a sign. I will print a sign for the door.

If you require a laptop I can borrow one (only one, sorry guys) from the library. Last week the laptops Cate and I borrowed went unused so if you want to come but don't have one ask and see if someone hasn't already put their hand up, and if they have we'll see what we can do with some other Wrimos and library cards.

Also, at this point in time I may need to leave around 4pm so if someone else could bring a powerboard or two? That would be awesome.

Remember we're going to make our wordcounts grow and have fun!

Sunday Write-in
I'll also mention that if you're not interested in dancing with the pageant traffic that there will be another write-in this weekend at the State Library on North Terrace. This will be on the Sunday and held in the Cafe from 11 onwards.
There is more about it in this thread:
Introduce Yourself

Because we need this topic.

Anyway... I am Cate, or Caitlin if you prefer not to use nicknames. This is my second year trying to reach the magical five oh, and I got there last year. Of course, it's going to be a LOT harder this time because a) I'm at uni, b) I work too much, and c) I'm transplanting to a different country at the end of November for two months. I tend to be the person who always brings spare power adaptors and I plan to make lots of new friends this year, in both Adelaide and Orlando.

I think I'm going to use this year to learn AusLan finally.
Regular Catch-ups

Okay, so I know this forum is dead for the year, but I know there were a few people who wanted to meet up regularly to keep motivated with writing during the other 11 months of the year.
It was suggested to be either at someone's place or a quite but public place depending on who wants to turn up. Maybe go with public place at first, see who turns up and where we go from there.
It will probably be better if we communicate via email to save having to remember to check here every few days for details.
Email me at chooky_ at hotmail dot com (yes, that is chooky underscore) if your interested.
For those who want a read-in

So we don't hijack the TGIO thread, I thought it wise to have space to discuss this separately from the TGIO.

So, discuss away!

Where would you like to hold it?

When would you like to hold it?

and who would like to come?

Getting your book bound for yourself or as gifts

In past years there has been the option of getting a free copy of your nano novel in book form from LuLu.comif you won Nano. This year they didn't offer such a deal.

I've been keeping a list of bookbinding places because I had hoped to get one of my books bound eventually. Red has done this and I'll post the list of bookbinding places that I have and Red can give the extra information since she has crossed the 't's and dotted the 'i's.

Academic Bookbinding Co 43 Bakewell Road, EVANDALE 8362 3649
Archival Products Aust. Pty Ltd 18 Belfast Street, HENLEY BEACH 8355 2069
Chasdor Bindery Pty Ltd 128 Grange Road, ALLENBY GARDENS 8346 9218
Riggs Bindery 36 Sussex Street, WARRADALE 8296 1049
Vellum Binding and Printing 2 Everard Avenue, KESWICK 8293 2225
William Harley & Son Pty Ltd 28 Dew Street, THEBARTON 8443 7515

(By bound, we're talking perfect bound, spring back, hard cover style. Think of your favourite hard back novel!)

Red I think your book is fantastic. I'm inspired to get my book finished and edited. :-)

Next Year

Have any of you guys given any thought to next year yet?

I think I know what I'm going to write. A collection of a thousand stories, each exactly fifty words long.
We wrote a few 50 word stories in English Studies in year 12. It's a really interesting medium, and I figure it'll be easier to actually complete than my zombie epic turned out to be. It's the 26th and I'm not even half way there. Ugh.
Has anyone thought of anything for next year yet?
Wordcount

I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread where we can post our wordcounts. If we each make one post, then edit it each day, to keep a running total, then we can compare our progress. (Should I be using the plural of progress? Does such a thing exist?)

So, to begin.

Day 1 - [haven't typed it up yet, am working on it. Will edit soon.]
Thank God It's Over! (The TGIO Party thread)

Wev'e battled through the month and as a group we've struggled and fought our stories until we've reached a point where we have said no more. For some of us that is past 50k and for some it is below 50k. Either way, we've all worked hard and strived and now we get to celebrate that it is over for this year.

There will be a read-in the following week which is why I have chosen this weekend.

Thank God It's Over

When: Sunday the 2nd of December
Time: 2pm
Where: Caffe Buongiorno, 187 Rundle Street (not far from the end of Rundle Mall on the opposite side of the road to Target)

There is cheap parking in the nearby U-Park ($4.90) although you won't be able to turn into the carpark from the right side of the road, you'll need to go around the block and turn in from the left.

If anyone needs any further directions I can post a map.

I hope many can make it to this and to the read-in the following week. We're seeing out nano in style!

Come, enjoy a drink and celebrate the win or comiserate your loss and plan for next year.

Hope to see you there!
Less that 12 Hours

I know, we only have a couple of hours left, and I should be writing rather than procrastinating in the forums and wasting precious words writing about how much I have to do.
As of 5pm today I've got 9123 words to write.
Where are those who have not crossed the finish line up to?

Weekday Write-In (Part 2)

Hello to everyone

It was suggested on one of the other forums (Unofficial / Underground Weekday Write-Ins) that we have a write-in this Tuesday.

I would like to propose:

Gloria Jeans, Glenelg, Tuesday 27 November

Chooky and I will be there from 6:30pm (although everyone who has attended a write-in with us will know our uncanny ability for running late). Feel free to arrive whenever you want and stay for as long as you want - if someone's going to be there earlier though, please post.

We will also bring a power board.

Hope to see everyone there for a last-minute writing sprint!

And it's a rather ugly spot instead of a bar. But it's still exciting that I have finished the challenge!

I hit the 50k mark tonight. And now I think I need to start studying for my exams.
Finishing Celebrations

Has anything been organised? Will anything be organised?
I'm willing to do it if no one else will, but I'll wait for our ML's to make a decision.

The best time is going to be this weekend, but this Saturday or Sunday? Sunday works better for me.
I'd be happy with something cheapish and maybe outside. I know I haven't been getting as much vitamin D this month since I've been hiding inside on my computer trying to writing. I have a small BBQ which I am offering to bring along, if people want to bring bbq meats/vegie patties and salads.

DeniseB also suggested that people might want to have a share and swapping of stories, or chapters. I'm happy to print out and bring a few of my better chapters of my story along to read. Hopefully others will join us. I'll stress that this is purely optional, because I know some people don't want to share, or don't want to share their whole stories. It's just a bit of additional fun for people who want to.

So who's screwed?

-raises hand-

my excuse is missing thursday-sunday due to work and schoolies, I literally didn't have a second spare. I was behind then, and now I'd need 4k+ a day... I'm a pretty slow writer it seems, and work 6hrs a day all week. I'm screwed! Won't stop trying though. In fact, I don't think I'll stop til I hit 50k anyway.
All Night Write-In

I thought I'd start a new thread, just in case some haven't been reading the Unofficial write-in thread.

This year the write-in will start on Friday the 23rd from about 6pmish, and continue on til... well before you get too tired to drive home, before the public transport stops for the evening, or when it starts up again in the morning.

It will be at the new 24 hour Bakery in Norwood, on the corner of the Parade and Osmond Tce. Its adjacent to Fin McCools Irish pub, and a Italian cafe on the other side. Also right next to the Norwood Kensington Library.

Tabby did some scoping, and they recommend using the toilets at the BP servo, there are toilets at the pub across the road too. Most of us didn't like the idea of pub toilets and we'll probably be having several toilet expeditions down the the servo to deal with the massive amounts of caffeine that will be needed to keep us awake. It will probably be safer in groups as the servo is a few properties down.

Tabby, what was the situation with the power points?
The 2007 Incredible International Challenge

Greetings Adelaidians! We, the writers of Saskatchewan, are inviting you to join us in good-natured competition. The challenge is to see which region is the most prolific in this year's NaNoWriMo.

The Incredible International Challenge began in 2003 when challenges were issued by Saskatchewan to seven regions. We have continued this challenge every year since then, and have an ongoing rivalry with the U.S. state of Montana. Many years we have challenged another region or two to join us in literary combat. You, the WriMos of Adelaide, came onto our radar screen by visiting us on a virtual bus tour last year. I, the Saskatchewan Literary Attachée, have been monitoring your communications and have noted that there is some interest in a regional challenge. Hence the delivery of this virtual glove slap across the face…

Participating regions will contend for these awards:
- The "We Are The Champions" Award goes to the region with the most winners.
- The "We Are Also The Champions" Award goes to the region with the highest percentage of winners (take the number of winners and divide by the number of people who signed up).
- The Carpal Tunnel Award goes to the region that writes the most words in total.
- The Loquacious Grandeur Award goes to the region with the highest average number of words written (take the total words written and divide by the number of people who signed up). This is calculated twice: once including people who did not post a word count and once excluding them.
- The "Everybody Gets An Award" Award goes to any region who has not already won an award. In the spirit of NaNoWriMo, every region who participates will be a winner!

If your region is interested in joining Saskatchewan in this friendly competition, please post a response in this thread or in a similarly titled thread on the Canada :: Saskatchewan forum. Thank you for joining us in this endeavour.

Third Official Write-in 2007

So, the weather decided to poop all over us last weekend forcing us to hide and cower at its mercy but this weekend we're gonna write our way towards the end of Nano.

Place: City West UniSA campus Library, room 5-15
Date: Saturday 24th November
Time: 1-5pm

REMEMBER
The 24th is Election Day. Remember to vote if you're enrolled so you have plenty of time to write and don't get fined!

We are allowed to bring munchies into the room. Pretty much anything but hot food so feel free to bring along drinks and lollies and other writer-must-have-edibles. Just remember there will be laptops and powerboards around.

If catching public transport especially stuff that involves walking from King William or the Train Station there are trams running every 15 minutes or less, so if you don't feel like hauling a laptop around the city take the tram.

Map:

I hope to burst out more words! Can't wait!
Unoffical / Underground WeekDAY Write-Ins

Springing from the other unofficial thread, someone suggested weekdays as an alternate time for a write-in, especially for people who are busy on weekends.
I work 9-5 weekdays, so anyone who wants to stand up and 'I can' to a weekday write-in please do so.
I can say 'I can' to an weekday evening write-in. Anyone feel like some inspirational beach writing? I've heard that Cibos or Gloria Jeans at Glenelg is almost dead on a Tuesday and Wednesday, so perfect for some frenzied writing driven on by full-strength caffeinated beverages. Public transport to the city is a tram away (I've gotta try out the new trams, see how they compare to Melbourne) and run fairly late now.
I'd like to hash out the idea and enthusiasm first. Tuesday the 13th or the 20th better? Maybe starting from 5pm onwards or turn up earlier if you want to, us lateys will have to deal with it.
The Garage Is Opened

There is no subtlety or secrecy about it. No cover of darkness. There is no need for secrecy, as the garage is in the middle of a very hidden location, and no need for trepidation, because the past few years all has gone... ... she wouldn't have entirely said 'well', but 'adequately and hyperactively'. So, no secrecy or trepidation. In fact it's the middle of the day and the main emotion she is feeling is excitement, as she rolls up the giant door of the hangar-like garage, to find The Bus in all it's glory.

It's not until the smell of dead orca hits her that she starts feeling the slight twinge of 'why did I volunteer for this??'
She pulled out her magic cleaning supplies and magic power tools (it had to be magic because otherwise she'd have nailed herself to the bus by accident within 2 seconds) and put on a gas mask, and entered the building.

The Vent Thread!

Alright well, I'm not sure if this has already been done, but on the car forums I frequent there's always a vent thread for when you want to drive it off a cliff. This is my first NaNo, but I've been writing for ages, and there have been plenty of times where I felt like personifying my story somehow and hurling abuse at it. Thus the vent thread. So feel free to yell, in the form of utter nonsense, anything and everything bothering you about your story! Please note though, this thread isn't for constructive advice, merely for releasing some emotion!

I'll start...

GODDAMNIT!! Why can't time mind its own damn business? If I go slow, its boring, if I go fast it sounds stupid. FSHHSGHH!! *kicks*

So come on, who's got some built up rage? XD
----------
If you're reading this, you're procrastinating.
My first NaNo - Sanctuary in the Void (2007)

Self Challenges

What challenges have people set for themselves this year? I know some of you - who've done this before - are aiming for larger totals. What else are people doing?

I have three challenges I've set for myself:
- I'm never going to reveal the main character's name
- I'm never going to reveal the date of the setting
- I'm making as many references to well-known literature as I can. So far I've mentioned the Wizard of Oz, A Christmas Carol, The Time Machine, 1984, The Trapdoor, The Dreamstone (if old children's tv counts as literature), and I've slipped a mention of Stephen King's death in there, too.
----------
"Methought I was,--and methought I had,--but man is but a Patched Fool, if he will offer to say what methought I had..."
- William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream
