[Sticky!] TGIO party RSVP list

Just a heads up, on December 5th, 2009, we will be having the official TGIO party in Shinsaibashi, Osaka. Directions will follow when it gets closer to the end of the month, but right now I need a headcount!

DETAILS:

When: December 5th, 2009
TIME: 6:30
Where: Shinsaibashi, Osaka (Midosuji Subway line, Shinsaibashi, Crystal Nagahori Exit)
MEET: If you are coming off the Midosuji, meet me at the Crystal Nagahori Exit. From other places, Shinsaibashi Loft, outside the Starbucks.
WHAT: Mexican food at El Pancho's. Tasty and festive!
Cost: You can eat cheaper for about 1050 if you don't want to drink, but if you want to drink (mostly I mean alcohol here) and eat moderatly, expect 2500~3000 yen dinner.

If that's a little rich for you (and believe me, I understand completely), I also plan to take people who want to stay at the capsule hotel (or aren't worried about trains) to karaoke afterwards. Bringing food to the resturant isn't cool, but sneaking in conbini food and drink to karaoke is ok as long as you are a ninja about it. :3

It's important to RSVP! I will harrass you about it in email as well. Bwahahahaha.

If you want to stay out with us, and are worried about trains, here's a capsule hotel conviniently located in Shinsaibashi:

http://www.asahiplaza.co.jp/capcel/english.html

They are awesome, and this is where I will be staying. Women friendly, and they speak English for those not savvy with Japanese.

Thanks guys, hope to see you there!
----------
If your curious about life in the middle of no-where Japan, I guess I'd be the chick to ask. :3

Happy ML Appreciation Day!

Just wanted to thank WillowWolf for being our awesome "regional" ML... for the WHOLE COUNTRY. You rock! Sorry, it's late in the day. I was busy procrastinating from writing. But, now I'm back to the grindstone, or just about to be, and thought I should appreciate our ML a bit first. So, consider yourself appreciated. Thanks for the stickers and the love and for all the organizing and such! Hope you're having a great day and rocking the word count. I posted this here rather than messaging you, so as to remind others who may have forgotten that it's ML appreciation day. Hope that's ok.

~Gwen
Tohoku Nanos Unite! (Take 2)

Hey all, our thread here got deleted (along with everything else) and I thought I would repost it. I copied what we had so far the other day (I hope I didn't miss anything) and saved it to repost here. So, below is what we had prior to deletion. If I missed anything please feel free to repost! (Actually it looks like I missed my own response to the last post. Oops, guess I'll repost that in a minute.)

Sep 10, 2009 - 19 50	Hey all, I am a newbie in Japan (just got here in August) but this will be my third year doing Nanowrimo. I was just wondering if anyone else out there planning on doing it this year is in Tohoku. I am in Tsuruoka (which is in Yamagata). Just curious if anyone else in the area is planning on participating and might be up for write ins or a kick off party.
I saw the old thread from last year, but figured a new thread was in order. I also thought it might be worth planning a bit in advance so that people have plenty of time to schedule things in. Even if no one's up for a meet up I was wondering if people wanted to introduce themselves here.
I'll go ahead:
Hajimemashite! I'm an American living in Tsuruoka. I will be teaching English through an Eikaiwa (I start in October) but I am a field teacher so I don't have an office. I have been in Japan since mid-August. I don't speak much Japanese but I am hell bent on learning as much as possible while I'm here. I live here with my boyfriend who is a new JET ALT this year. I used to teach Spanish full time back in the states. I write whenever I can. This will be my third year doing nanowrimo. I participated and won in both 07 and 08. I am still editing my novels from previous years and have not yet submitted them for publication though that is my ultimate goal. I have had some short stories published in the last few years but not many. I find nanowrimo to be an excellent motivator and I am very excited to be doing it again. I write fantasy and adventure, largely with kick ass female leads. That's about all I can think of for introductions. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
Sep 19, 2009 - 03 42	Guenhwyvar: Yokoso! Welcome to Japan! I hope you're enjoying your time here.
I'm also an American living in the Tohoku region, but I'm active Navy assigned to Misawa (in Aomori prefecture). The really funny thing is that I chose to come to Misawa even though I hate snow. I'm a little far away myself but I might be able to manage a Saturday away from Misawa for a write in somewhere between Yamagata and Aomori prefectures. But hopefully there will be some more Nanos popping up in the region.
My Japanese speaking ability is atrocious and, so far, I haven't been able to continue lessons because of a combination of work, online math classes, and kimono dressing lessons. I can read a good amount, write some, and understand quite a bit, I just can't speak well :p. My job is in meteorology and oceanography, but I will be getting out next year so I can spend more time with my husband (who is also Navy but stationed in Yokosuka, Kanagawa prefecture) and finish a bachelor's in applied mathematics, as well as take a break from the daily grind.
This will be my third year doing Nano (and hopefully a year of win this time). I don't have any goals of publishing what I write with Nano, I've mainly done it because 1) I like writing, it's a great way for me to reduce stress (mainly by throwing my problems at my protagonists), and 2) to get the story ideas I have floating around out of my head and onto paper. Most of my ideas have been fanfic stuff, so nothing's really publishable anyway.
Sep 23, 2009 - 16 07	Hey Guenhwyvar, I didn't realize you were in Tohoku! I'm in Fukushima-ken, making you my northern neighbor.
I'm a newbie JET participant for the 2009-2010, though right now I'm planning on staying on longer than a year. I live in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima-ken and am in love with the place so far. I teach Junior High students at a large combined Junior/Senior High School which is very academically focused, making English important but only in order to pass entrance exams! My husband of one year has tagged along with me and works remotely as a computer engineer.
I've never participated in Nanowrimo before, but love the idea of it and am excited for my first go at it. I have a degree in English Literature and plan on going for a Ph.D. upon return from my time in Japan. I adore fiction, though my strengths are definitely more in analyzing than creating. But stretching myself to get 50,000 words on paper seems like an excellent challenge! I took creative writing courses in college but usually stuck to short stories and poetry, so a longer piece will be difficult for me. My job offers plenty of free time, however, so I'm really antsy to get started in November!
Sep 27, 2009 - 17 50	Yay, Tohoku Nanos! You're there! :-) Sorry for the delayed response. I was out of town for all of silver week, but I'm so glad to hear from you guys.
Sounds like we're quite spread out, but perhaps we could organize a weekend in Sendai or Niigata or maybe even Akita (still haven't been there) sometime for a write in/nano party. If people are at all interested let me know and I will try to organize something. If you have a preference for location and timing let me know. If we do it in early November it could be a kick off party/ write in. Or we could do late October and just have it be a kick off party.
Not sure what people are up for, but it might be fun to have a get together to put faces with names and give us a chance to get some word wars started etc. Write ins can be extremely motivational and really give you a boost in word count. Feeling like you're not the only person in the world who has signed up for, and is actually working towards, writing 50,000 words in 30 days can be very reassuring and inspiring.
Anyway, thanks for chiming in! Hopefully more people will show up and introduce themselves. Though, even if there are only three of us that would still be fun for a get together. (Actually, I think I have convinced a couple other people in my ken to sign up, so we may have a bigger group. I will try to point them towards this forum in the not too distant future.)
Hope you two are doing well. I look forward to hearing from you again, and from others as well. Let me know what you think about a meet up sometime and what dates and areas might be preferable.
Sep 27, 2009 - 18 09	Hey everyone,
I'm from Kobe - now living in NorCal, USA, but I've visited Tohoku before and I couldn't help but notice your suggestion of Akita.
Whether you meet up there or not for NaNo, I do want to suggest visiting Akita some time anyway.
They have really great Onsen, and in that area, you can see a free Taiko performance of the Namahage (Akita Oni) troup - A must see! There's also an aquarium, and the Godzilla rock and some other interesting things there. Oh and its' very very beautiful.
Sorry, shameless plug. My good friend is from Akita and I had a blast visiting.
Good luck with NaNo! (^_^) v
Sep 29, 2009 - 04 01	For me, the first three weekends are pretty full up.
I'm volunteering for a haunted forest on the base here that last weekends in October, ending that last Saturday. However, I may just not do that last Saturday... I haven't managed to get to a kickoff since I started doing Nano.
The first full weekend in November, I'll be participating in the regional kimono dressing competition in Akita, so unless I can manage some time away from things Saturday late afternoon/early evening (competition is that Sunday), that weekend is shot.
And, as the watchbill stands, I'll be on call the weekend of the 14th (which means I can't leave the Misawa area).
However, I should be able to swing something the weekends of the 21st and the 29th (tho probably just that Sunday). And possibly October 31st/November 1st for a kickoff.
As far as location, Sendai is a definite possibility for me since it's fairly easy for me to get to. Also, I've never been to Niigata, but I have wanted to get out there before I leave Japan next year. And again, if it's not too busy before the competition, I might be able to meetup somewhere near the area of the kimono competition in Akita that first Saturday in November (I'm really not sure how much goes on or how much my sensei is going to want me to practice before competition).

----------

Japan Nano Challenges thread!

All of you are here because you want to kick some wordly butt and write a 50k novel in a month. But as some of you who are veterans know, it's not always that easy.

So come on, kids! Let's start thinking about challenges. The challenges you post here do NOT have to be specific to Japan, UNLESS you want them to! Your challenge can be anything from "doing bad things at the kotatsu" (that was a challenge I was issued one year, and I failed it hard) to "girl chewing on the end of her pencil." Or make them really wacky like "Include that alien from Watchmen in a serious manner while ewoks dance around it singing the alien's praises."

Basically, this is just a place for you guys to toss out crazy challenges at each other. Get creative! Think of this as a warm up excersise for the big event.

I'll start:

Eating pocky on a mountain
Talking trees
Spiderman
California
Hamburgers
Ninja
----------
If your curious about life in the middle of no-where Japan, I guess I'd be the chick to ask. :3

Guys, I was running late today (sorry, I was watching Merlin and making dinner, bad ML! No eating!), but the AIM chat is open and I am signing onto Skype right now.

AIM Chat: NanoJapan
When: Mondays at 5pm until 10pm. If I'm not there, feel free to harass me.

Skype Chat: NanoJapanAsia

And because tomorrow is a national Holiday, I will be online most of the day. Feel free to harass me on Skype or AIM if you want to word war!

Thanks guys. Keep fighting with those words and writing!

Calling all "older" wrimos in Tokyo or elsewhere in Japan

I am writing in Canada - in Chilliwack, to be more specific. I am 60 and my character is in her early 70s, having been summoned from North Vancouver to join her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren in Tokyo.

I would love to connect electronically to any and all writers in the region, of course, but ... do we have any other older writers? Or those writing about older characters?

Chubu WriMos

Chubu Region NaNoWriMos unite! We're where it's at, right in the middle ;).

Chubu consists of Aichi, Fukui, Gifu, Ishikawa, Nagano, Niigata, Shizuoka, Toyama, and Yamanashi.

I know there's a Nagoya thread already, but I thought expanding it to the general Chubu region would be nice, given we'd probably meet in Nagoya (though Shiz is awesome ;) haha).

This is my first NaNo, but I'm getting rather excited about it. Tokyo isn't that far, but it is expensive to get there, and Osaka is even farther... so for us locals in Chubu, maybe this would be a good place to muse, plan, and otherwise enjoy ourselves. Okay, I have no idea what I am doing, but I know I'm not the only Shiz WriMo here, and there's bound to be more Chubu folk floating about, lurking in the corners.

So yeah... woohoo!
Tohoku Kick-Off Party/Write In Details!

Hey all, for those who are interested in coming to a Kick-off party but who live WAY up North, please read the following:

Who: Any and all wrimos in the Tohoku area (or anyone else who feels like dropping in)

When: November 1st. 12:00 - 18:00 (show up whenever you can during that time period and stay for as long as you like)

Where: Sendai, Clis Road, Excelsior Cafe (subject to change but that's the current plan)

What: A kick off party (hopefully with stickers mailed to us by our lovely ML WillowWolf) and our 1st write-in (hence the six hour duration)

What to bring: Your lovely self (or whatever self you have lying around) and your laptop/notepad/pile o' napkins.

How much: Well, it's not like there's a cover at the door or anything, but the cafe would probably appreciate it if we all purchased a little something, so bring about 500yen and you should be all set.

Why: Because sharing the start of NaNoWriMo with other wrimos just adds to the fun. After all, November can wind up being a fairly anti-social month with all the word churning, so it's nice to get a little time in with other humans. Also, spending time with those who can sympathize with your own personal, self-inflicted insanity can make you feel better about the whole thing. And finally, because Word Wars feed the soul (not to mention your word count).

If you have any questions, or would like to attend, please either reply to this thread or to me directly. It would be great if I could have a rough idea of how many people will be attending. Thanks!
----------

Hey Tokyo Wrimos!

The local kickoff will be on Sunday Nov 1st at Shirokanedai (since there's no demand for another location). The map to Tokyo Hacker Space can be found here.

Let's try and keep it short so we don't cut into anybody's writing time. Is 1PM agreeable?

RSVP!
Hokkaido NaNoWriMos

Hello! I am trying to see who is doing NaNoWriMo and currently living in Hokkaido. It might be nice to meet some new people or just find out who among my friends are secret writers!
I'm currently living in Hokkaido and this is not only my first year here (not looking forward to winter), but it's also my first time to do NaNoWriMo. I'm super excited! I've tried to write some stories down before, but I've never gotten around to finishing. This time I am looking forward to having some sort of goal so even if I don't finish a novel, I can at least say I'm somewhere closer than I was before.
Anyhow, stop by and say hi, all ye Hokkaido-ans.

Respond to this thread or PM me to lemme know. I will wait for people to show up, but not long.

We'll be breaking up before you have to get to your Halloween parties, never fear, 8D

Any Kagoshima Participants?

Hey, I'm Perry. Originally from Chicago but been living on the Osumi peninsula in Kagoshima-ken and working as an ALT for a little over a year now. I wasn't able to participate last year because of a massive case of writer's block (although I've made up for that by finishing two novellas in the past six months, the second of which I'm about a few pages away from wrapping up). This year, I'm set with an idea and ready to go.

Anyone else in Kagoshima or southern Kyushu?
