Well, I am.

Line of the Day

I was poking around the Horror genre forums and I came across this thread: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3392471, which I thought would be pretty fun to bring over to the regional forums.

You basically post a line you wrote today; it can be any line, for whatever reasons- it's funny, it's a pivotal line for plot development, it should you a side of your character you didn't know- anything goes!

For me:

Saw this thread on one of the international forums and thought it would be nice to transpose it over here. I'm sure we all have the same problem of our MCs suddenly developing a mind of their own (with an attitude to accompany it) and deciding that they're gonna do things their way. So go ahead and indulge in a little "WTF?!" session -- we're entitled to it!

With 10 days to Nano and no conceivable plot in sight, I figured this thread was more than overdue. Plus, we've all turned whinging into an art form really.

Writing playlist/soundtrack?

Do you guys have a writing playlist? You know, the kind that helps you write or gives you the feeling that you're really in the story? Last year I did Death Metal playlist and the year before that was just Heavy Metal.

This year, I'm thinking about Muse and maybe some epic game soundtracks but I'm not sure what yet. I found this one on youtube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56uCZ8MpnJk

It brought some interesting scenes to mind. Does anyone know if we can purchase game soundtracks locally?
Motivation/Ways to Keep Writing/

Also 'Getting Rid of Writer's Block'.

YES. I know this belongs in Reaching 50, 000 but hey, why not one for us? (if this is inappropriate to be here, tell me. I'll copy+paste it into Reaching 50k then you can delete this one haha).

So. What are your ways to keep on writing? Sometimes you need that extra push to get you to your goal, if you're anything like me (I get stuck every 400 words or so, haha) so what are your motivations, ways that make you keep on writing even when it feels like your fingers are gonna fall off?

People who're behind, you should probably come to this thread. xD

So here are mine:

1. Tell everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY that you'll get the 50k done. Then you'll have peer pressure, too.

2. Know your limits. I know I can write about 1000 words in WOD in half an hour, so I set the timer to thirty minutes and go. It's nice to see your word count increase by a thousand. Take a break, then go again. I got 5k or so done today with this. Since the day hasn't ended, probably more. (If I took shorter breaks, even more xD)

3. Incentives. You know, like "I WON'T GO TO THE TOILET UNTIL I GET THIS NEXT 500 WORDS DONE!"

Or, well, snacks.

4. Word Wars. Once you start, you don't stop till it's over. It's a great writing boost, simply join the NaNo chatroom at http://www.goodchatting.com/rooms/nanowrimo.php and participate in a word war if there's one going on. Or wait until one starts. Or type "!startwar " without quotations to start your own. So if you type "!startwar 5 10" It'll be 5 minutes until it starts (giving people time to join) and the war will last 10 minutes (you have 10 minutes to write as much as you can.

5. Go to the write-ins. Ask people their wordcounts, then if one is higher than yours, go as fast as you can to beat the guy. Like I did. YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING ABOUT.

6. Have writer's block? Force it out word by word until you get through.

7. Think. Why are you writing? For the joy of it? For the CreateSpace reward? Because your mom told you to? Think about it, be happy, and find the motivation in yourself again. (Or if your mom told you to do it, be scared. Be very scared. That wasn't a jab at mothers by the way. Mothers are awesome.)

8. Destroy all distractions. Something like DarkRoom or Write Or Die. Or you know what, just unplug your mouse, give it to your neighbour and tell them to give it back in an hours time. Never before. Ever. And then type, since you can't browse (unless you want to alt-tab, then keep pressing tab till you find the link you need, tab, and keep browsing with tabbing... yeah, way too tedious.)

9. Have a talk with your characters. Out loudor in your head, I don't know, but ask them what they'd do. Sometimes it doesn't come to you so easily, but chat with them for a while and you'll figure it out.

So, that's it for me. What're yours?
----------

Asia :: Singapore

Random Stuff

Being ex-ML now I no longer have to keep so focused and, er, serious (was I ever?) so I'm setting this one up this year.

Two new topics started in as many minutes. Can you guess that I'm procrastinating from work.

The author search is a bit weirder this year. And what's this Amazon thing about?

Okay, meandering thoughts being reeled in.
Work kills

I have been working overtime for the past few days. Once I get home, I'll be so tired that I fall asleep at the computer or on my writing pad. Haven't been able to clock in much writing hours. Just reached the 4k mark. I hope to be able to catch up! I'll be off to Bali next week. Will keep writing on the iPhone.

Anyone else having similar unexpected problems?
Remember vinyl?

Okay. It's back again this year, although last year there were so few of us who were old enough to buy their first record on vinyl that I'm wondering if it's worthwhile even starting it this year. But thanks to Kiaace the whooshing over the head noise has come back and I need some conversation with oldies who remember vinyl before it went with decks.

Anyway ... I will turn 50 during NaNoWriMo this year. I think I'm still the oldest WriMo in Singapore but you never know. Anyone out there even vaguely over 40?

Word Wars!

Anyone up for word wars?

I don't mind running it this year (though I'm not sure whether there are prizes provided -> ask the MLs)

For those of you who aren't familiar with word wars, word wars is where us wrimos will represent our different parts of Singapore in a mean competition of word production. Every week (that would be every Sunday), the total word count of all the participants will be tallied and averaged and that number will be the score for the zone for that week.

So here are the zones that can register for (i.e. where you live now)

Zones:
1) East
2) West
3) North
4) South
5) Overseas

Reply to this post with your zone if you want to participate.

Registration will close Sunday, 8th of November and the results from the first week will be out on Monday, 9th.

----------

For when we need an outside opinion

A thread for when we're not entirely sure if a piece sounds the way we want it to and figure a second opinion might be helpful. I recognise that not everybody works this way, but I know I do.

My request:

I need to know how the conversation sounds to everyone, please. Does it sound natural, and how does each party come off?

(Earlier in the story, Rain asked Mina if he could buy her a drink sometime. She said "no". Now:)

__________

A companionable silence for a few moments, the corridor lighting throwing shadows across Mina’s face as he watched her put work aside and pick up something else instead, the microexpression of amusement flickering across her countenance.

“I’ve been reconsidering our conversation.”

“Do tell.”

“I think that yes, I will let you buy me a drink.”

‘Time and place.”

“At a classy dinner tonight. You will pay, of course.”

“Naturally.”

“And there will be no expectations upon me except perhaps a promise of another dinner.”

“No coffee at your place, then?”

“No, but there may be a goodnight kiss.” She smiled, a viciously feline expression. “If you play your cards right.”
My novel in three sentences

Joe (Singapore-Irish) asks Jasmine (Irish-Malaysian) to go to his cousin's wedding in Kelantan. The wedding is the bash from heaven or hell, depending on whether the guest is on the bride's side or the groom's side. Meanwhile, old grudges and an unsolved murder make frequent trips to the bathroom a must.
Kick-Off Round Robin

We never got around to reading the round robin at the kick-off, so here it is:

Quote:

They gathered, it was not a mass, it was not an assembly.

They were just nobody.

Nobody in particular. But you could say that about any assembly.

It's the group hug that melts the chocolate for the strawberries, sitting eagerly in the refridgerator.

A raven perched on an old, gigantic, dying, wiry, oak tree cawed into the lonely dark night

the evil bunny silently crept into the night, its little beady red eyes darting around

, calling forth the forces of storm, earth, wind and fire as he laughed maniacally

a shiny purple ball appeared from nowhere, startling all the people in the room.

Well it was not unexpected because he had done it before many times, if truth be

told, no one really had any idea what was going on in the narrative anymore.

Unfortunately, the world then spontaneously combusted, and you were left with nothing but a silly

cat in a bag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

what am i supposed to type this this blank space? help help help help!!! help!

the knife plunged into the eyeball and made a loud and disgusting squishy sound so

repulsive that our hero nearly threw up on the nearby box of red pens. He

shook it once. Twice. On the third swipe, ink flayed across the page that he

opened was torn, tattered and had an air of abandonment over years of flipping through

the dusty old book lying on the dusty old floor in the dusty old room

was filled to the brim with old junk, old, ancient treasures long forgotten by everyone.

the exile trudged on--loveless, purposeless, but fearless at the same time. "NOT A COWARD!" Sigh...

For all the years he spent on the road, he lost a different lover still.

"So, have you heard about Dracula's moon base?" Someone asked, he arched an eyebrow curiously.

The effect would have been more impressive if that eyebrow had not been dyed aquamarine.

It's not aquamarine. It's red, like thick gouts of blood flowing from a fresh wound

he gasped, the memories from the recent war coming back to him like a wave.

The images of dead bodies and desembled corpses scattered over plains and city streets, rotting.

Much like baby teeth left in too long long past their fall out due date.

They were beyond saving, and yet they lived hoping that their saviour would come someday.

I sat there and waited for days and days, but nothing and no one came.

My dreams and hopes were utterly shattered, and that event changed me forever and ever.

in the embrace of the grim reaper and time is running out as i ran

I didn't knew if I can out run it but darn it, I have to.

I came in and I was forced to transform into a ninja. Won a prize!

Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia. ~ E.L. Doctorow
