Want your own forum? Want to be an ML? PLUS Region Updates

If you want your own forum, all you need is for one person in your region to volunteer to be an ML (Municipal Liaison).

From http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/402868

Municipal Liaisoning sounds pretty cool. Can I be the ML for my area?

Maybe! Some areas already have high-functioning, monstrously encouraging MLs who have spent the last three or four NaNoWriMos honing their cheerful whip-cracking skills to an Olympic level. Other areas are ML-less, and could really use someone with a little organizational moxie. Starting September 1, you can drop our ML Headmistresses an email (erin@nanowrimo.org) to find out what the ML situation is in your area.

In past years, they were looking for people who were over 18 years of age and had done NaNoWriMo at least once before (a win was not required - just participation). I don't know if these requirements are still in place.

Still interested? Get in touch with the ML Headmistress, Erin Allday. She's erin(at)nanowrimo(dot)org.

I can't possibly be the only writer who's going to put himself through this. Can I???

I'd like to meet others in Hong Kong who are writing their book at breakneck speed and perhaps share ideas, critique each other's stuff and even get together for Sunday Dim Sum to compare notes.

Regional Word War against Korea

There's a tradition that's been running amuck on the NaNoWriMo boards, and we have remained, until now, unscathed. It's the tradition of having regional word wars.

There are a few ways it can be done, but one of them is to calculate it on an average word count per user for each region. Another way is to calculate based on the percentage of winners for the region. There are more, but that's the general idea.

One of the major benefits of this is that it helps participants get their word counts up (incentive, people!) and increase likelihood of participants winning.

The Korea ML asked if we want to have it out with them. I'm asking you. Are you in? Are you interested?

Post your word count here and tell us how you're doing. Good day? Bad day? We want to know!

I ended November 1st with 5,880 words, which made me very very very happy. I'm ahead of the NaNoWriMo game, although I'd like to write much more than 50k if I can. At any rate, it gives me a bit of leeway if I end up having a bad no-writing day. Yay!

How about you?
What are YOU doing to prepare for NaNoWriMo?

How are preparations coming for everyone? And, for that matter, what do YOU do to prepare for NaNoWriMo?

Me, I'm still doing my world building, character building, and plotting - it's fantasy on a made-up world, so I'm building everything from scratch. I have the basics of my plot down, but only the basics. I still need the nitty gritty details done because that's how my brain works best.

I've also been thinking of possibly doing two novels this year, but haven't decided yet. I think I'll wait and see how it goes - I haven't even had a win for a few years, so that might be too much for me right now. OTOH, I've managed 100k words in 2 1/2 weeks a year ago, so it's actually doable for me. I dunno - like I said, haven't decided, but if I do, I also need to plot - in detail - the second novel as well, which is science fiction. I've got the broad brushstrokes down for that one as well, and the world is built, such as it is, but details are required.

The husband has been warned, so he knows what to expect. We still have yet to discuss bribes for the muse. In past years, it's been takeaway lunch packets to save me from cooking, but this year, we don't live close to any place that has decent lunch packets, so it's not so viable. I'm open to suggestions on what to bribe the muse with... :D

So. What about you? How are your preparations coming? Do you need help with anything?

----------
Want to generate more NaNoWriMo'ing interest in your area?

While writing with a hundred thousand other writes this coming November sounds like a lot of fun, it's even more fun if a bunch of those writers are in your very own neighborhood, speak your own language (literally and figuratively), and can meet up for kick-off parties, write-ins, and Thank Goodness It's Over! parties. So how do you generate more interest?

1. Post in the regional lounge. Pretty much everyone is shy, and no one wants to start a thread or put themselves out there. But someone's gotta start, so it might as well be you. Start a thread for your region if there isn't one already (ie, "Hong Kong - who's here?" or "Bangladesh - anyone? anyone?", and chances are that pretty soon, others from your area will start posting, too. Start threads about other items of interest to you if they aren't already started. Chances are, someone else is also interested in it. An active forum will draw more people out of the woodwork.

2. Volunteer to be an ML for your area if you've done NaNoWriMo at least once before and are at least 18 years of age. When you're an ML, you get your own regional lounge, you get to order official swag from headquarters, and you get to herd the cats, er, writers. It's a whole lot of fun! Plus you get access to the private forums (and access to a whole lot of other MLs who've got great advice to share), the ML area (with printable posters, press releases, and other fun and useful stuff), and you get the keys to the executive washroom. If you have questions, please either email me directly or post them to the Municipal Liaison thread.

3. Organize events in your area. An ML is not required to organize and hold the events. Theoretically, I'll soon be getting access to the regional calendar, and when I do, I can post events for your area on it. Consider a kick-off party, write-ins, and a Thank Goodness It's Over! party.

4. Send press releases to the local newspapers to draw interest. If you follow the About, then Media link, there should be a sample press release there. In the ML area – which, of course, only MLs have access to – there are other handy signs that can be printed and posted around town to generate more interest as well, and there's also an ML-oriented press release with a place to put ML-contact info.

5. Enlist the help of active and well-read bloggers in your area. See if they'll either write about NaNoWriMo (even if it's brief) on their blog, or offer to write something up for them to post to their blog. If someone blogs, they're already a writer, so half the battle may already be won...

Do you have ideas on how to generate more interest in your area? Post them here!
Travelling to Singapore on a weekend?

Hi Asia Elsewhere

Just popping in here to let you know that if you're travelling in November and will be in Singapore you'll be very welcome at Singapore Write-ins. Don't worry if don't have a laptop as we have Alphasmarts for loan. All you need is a disk or a thumbdrive to download what you write.

Venue: The Arts House (nearest MRTs Raffles Place and City Hall)
Times: Saturdays and Sundays, 3pm-5pm

The only exceptions are November 18th and 24th because other events are booked at the venue.

PM me if you want more details.

Happy novelling!
----------
rozen is not sure if she's co-ML for Singapore but is for NaNoWriMo and anyway she'll be in Ireland for the entire month of April and not in Singapore to organise any events and there was only one meet-up last year after it was all over and four people tu
