Think you're hot stuff? How about this..

While prowling around on the Nano forums, I discovered someone out there who had written.. 762,006 words. Really, that's no typo. It works out to roughly 31,000 words per day.

... Yikes.

I didn't really think this is possible, so I wanted to ask previous Nanowrimo people: do word counts carry over from year to year? Or, when you start a new session, would you just erase the previous wordcount? Meaning that, indeed, some people can write 30,000 words per day... ?
keeping on schedule or slipping behind?

I've fallen way behind due to Real Life pressures cutting into writing time. I'm in awe of some of the figures I'm seeing - people already over the 50,000 word goal? Well done!
Is anyone else feeling like they're slipping behind? What's your strategy for catching up?
For myself, life should be a little quieter for the next few days, and I'm hoping self-discipline will kick in and I'll stagger towards the finishing line...:-)
Final Write-in and TGIO Party

Hi Everyone,

Our last weekly write-in will probably be this coming Sunday (Nov. 29), which is also the day before the contest ends - a good day to get some solid writing in for anyone who hasn't finished at that point.

After November 30th, it is traditional (and fun) to have some kind of "Thank God It's Over" Party to which everyone is invited. A chance to share experiences, compare wounds, etc. It may also be a chance to talk about plans for next year.

Since we have so many new people this year - and past participants who are attending events for the first time - I want to ask for suggestions as to where you would like to get together.

In the past, we have reserved a big table at the Brew Pub and enjoyed a nice meal, which is certainly one option. (Despite the name, one is not actually obliged to be of age to attend.) But I would like to hear your opinions as to preferred...

1. Venue
2. Day (Tuesday - Saturday?)

Also, let me know if you would like to attend (I hope everyone can) so I know what size venue would work.

How is everyone doing?

It's the end of the first week - time to take stock of how it's gone. There are some amazing word totals out there - and some struggling folk, too. Remember, there's time yet to get into your stride.

Personally, I'm just over 11,000 words. Not quite where I;d hoped to be but moving along - yet I know this is only because I'd really outlined and made lots of notes on the first few chapters. Once chapter five is done, I'm toast.....:-(

Anyone want to share their tricks (or treats) for keeping going as we approach the sagging middle of Nano month?
NaNoWriMo makes your brain all wonky?

Here's a question to everyone. How do you find nanowrimo affects your daily mental health? Not in terms of actually writing - sitting down and trying to get those words out can sometimes be like pulling teeth, naturally - but in terms of when you're not?

I've done some fiction writing before, but suddenly, doing this every day, I'm finding it very hard to shut off the flow of ideas: it's hard to get a free moment from the story, which keeps on chugging along and figuring itself on its own power, like a Norton Anti-Virus Scan that just keeps on going in the background while you're trying to do something important, and it slows everything down.

Yikes!

Does anyone else experience anything like this? How do you find yourself thinking during a time of SO MUCH writing, all the time, every day? Just thought I'd throw it out there.
Queen's Write In

I was just wondering if anyone at Queen's (or who lived close by) would want to have a write in sometime next week (maybe Tuesday, or Wednesday during the day) at one of the libraries on campus.

I could book a room for a few hours, and people could come and go as they please.

I tend to be better at getting writing done, if I have made some sort of a commitment, or have others there to make sure I'm not slacking off.

Any takers?
Mid-Way Write-In?

This Sunday is the half-way point - the time when all the problems and barriers tend to exert themselves.

So, even though I know some people have commitments, let me ask how many might like to attend a write-in, even just for mutual support?

nanomentary?!

i'm currently in the film focus program at lcvi, and one of our curriculum requirements is to make a documentary of some kind. i realized that nanowrimo is the perfect topic-- a few of my classmates are doing it, it's close to my heart at this moment, and it brings out great emotions (stress, panic, euphoria...) in people that would be lovely to see on screen.

originally, i was just going to focus on the people who are doing it at my school, and the plan is to conduct a few interviews. tomorrow is the first set, and then another in a week, and then half a week later, etc., just chronicling progress, emotions, and general feelings towards the project and their life.

and then, the realization! with this lovely forum, i have fairly easy access to a bunch of local people who are participating. it's still a lot harder to co-ordinate with people who don't go to my school, as my life right now goes school! write! play rehearsal! with no time for human interaction in between. still-- with permission of everyone involved, of course-- i figure i could get some "look-at-the-people-working-it's-so-nice-and-community-oriented" shots at the next write-in, and, if anyone has any time within the next week, conduct a couple of interviews.

cough, planning isn't my strong suit, cough. tomorrow, i'm going to have a meeting with the others in my class who are nano-ing and confirm their interest in the project, and we'll iron out some more details. this is mostly a post to gauge interest.

ANYWAY YEAH, the point is-- if anyone would allow me to interview them, i'd be very very much obliged (: i'll check back here but you could also e-mail me at thesatah@hotmail.com or add me on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=507036741). thank you so much! now i'm off to try and double my wordcount in the next six hours... hah
Kingston's Halos

Hey Everyone,

So I was looking at our "regional stats" and noticed that 7% of us Kinstonians have donated! First of all, thanks so much to those who already have, I know I'm not really one to talk, since my profile isn't boasting a halo (yet - going home this weekend and hoping to convince the parents).

I know its hard to donate, but here's my train of thought, don't leave me yet.

How cool would it be if 50% of Kingston WriMos donated? That means 28 of us have to donate.
If we donate even 10$ each (just the 28) we are raising $280 to keep this wonderful institution up and running.

Think about it, 10$. It's not really that much.
- Instead of buying those frappicinos everytime you go to starbucks, buy the cheaper stuff. You will save about 10$ you wouldn't have had ANYWAYS
- Everytime you go to the lazy scholar (Queens students -I'm looking at you) you spend 8.75$ flex dollars for a meal. Are those wings REALLY worth it?

10$ really isn't that much. I know some of us may have difficulties with it, and if you can't, that's really okay. I'm not even sure if I can yet, I have to talk to my parents about it, but pleeease pleeaaaseee do at least give it serious consideration.

Has NaNoWriMo changed your life? Lets make sure it continues to change live, and put an end to the one day novelist forever.
Happy Writing!
H1N1 Write-in?

With all the concern over flu season this year, I'm starting to wonder if a virtual write-in might be safer. For instance, pick a date and a 1-2 hour period. Announce one's arrival on the forum, and then post words typed at the end.

Of course, braving the challenge to attend a traditional weekly write-in still has its advantages as well.

Any thoughts?

Kick-Off Party

With the start of nano just 9 days away (Note to self: MUST work faster on outline) I would like to survey people's opinions on where to hold a Kick-Off event - a combination of a little socializing, possible refreshments, and a little writing (bring laptops, etc.) where you can get those first 1,000 words down in the company of others.

November 1st is a Sunday (can't change the date, it's carved into the nano rules).

It would be great to see everyone there. So to increase the odds, could everyone let me know if you would prefer...

1. Downtown or Township venue.

2. Afternoon or evening.

3. Pub, cafe, or other venue.
(Possible choices off the top of my head include the meeting room at Chapters, Brew pub, Sipps, Starbucks, Sleepless Goat, a different cafe, library, public park with long extension cord, classroom at Queen's - which we would need a student to book - etc.)

4. If anyone would like to come but wants to avoid certain venues (ie you're underage and don't want to go to a bar or you just can't stand certain places) you can let me know privately by nanomail.

5. Any other considerations, let me know.

I'll ask again at the Intro.

Intro Meeting

Hi All,

Because most people seem to find downtown more convenient than Chapters (quite a few mentioned Queen's), I have booked space for an Intro Meeting at ...

Kingston Public Library,
Central Branch
130 Johnson
2nd floor
Boucher Room

On ...

Thursday, October 29th
6 PM to 9 PM

(Thursday seems to be a day when few people have conflicts.)

I'm hoping this will make it easier for those who didn't make meetings other years because they found Chapters too far away.

Looking forward to seeing everyone. As I said before, feel free to bring friends.

P.S. It's just two blocks from Starbucks, if anyone wants coffee.

Gearing up for nano.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my email or posted your intention to participate in this year's challenge on the forum - both newcomers and old-timers. Glad to hear the enthusiasm.

The next step in the traditional scheme of things is to arrange for ...

1. An intro meeting before the contest where newcomers can ask questions and receive (hopefully) helpful materials, and everyone can meet each other. This is usually best held a few days before Nov. 1. A good time to bring friends you are hoping to coach into participating. (We've traditionally had these at Chapters.)

2. A kick off-event on November 1st, which is traditionally a "bring your laptop, paper, crayons, etc." and start committing your first words to paper in a friendly and informal atmosphere - possibly with beverages. (These have be held at Chapters, but could also take place at a library, the Brew pub, Sleepless Goat, etc so long as it is comfortable for all.)

So may I ask 2 questions:

1. H ow many would like to attend an Intro , and which day would be best?

2. How many would like to attend the kick-off, and which venue(s) would you prefer.

Feel free to either respond below or nanomail me.
