Donaton Derby

Donation Derby! Another way to compete against yourself, but in support of NaNoWrimo!
It's a self-competition in a sense: we're competing against what was donated from this region last year, not what anybody else raises. Winner is the region with the highest average *increase* above the previous year.

We're one of the Wolverines, in League 4, and currently are neck in neck with NOTRE DAME.
(How cool would it be to beat Notre Dame?)
We're in the Wolverine League, or League 4. So far we've donated ~~about 70 percent of what~~ nearly 70 percent more than we donated as a group last year. (Apparently I was looking at it backwards.) YOU ALL ROCK!

From the Donation Derby FAQ:
In the Donation Derby contest, the winner in each league will be the region with the highest average increase in donations between last year and this year. Brand-new regions and existing regions that had no donations last year will be competing in the same league. Our contest will close at midnight on November 30th, and winners will be announced as close to December 4th as possible.

Each winning region will receive these lovely prizes:

* A personalized web badge to decorate blogs and regional websites
* A personal email from Chris
* Their region name on a plaque/trophy at HQ, plus photographic evidence of same.
* Public acknowledgement on the site

The fine print: Since region size is the number of active+homed participants, this number (and the data you’ll see) will fluctuate through the month as more participants home with your region, or (sadly) leave your region and home elsewhere.

The Donation Derby can only show donations made directly to OLL through the donation station (or by check). We can’t include donations made through GiftTool, since those donations are not routed directly through OLL.

If no region in a league exceeds last year’s average, the winner will be the region that comes closest to matching last year’s average. In case of a tie, the winner will be the region with the highest total donation for the current year.

Site says we have some 85 people in our area, with slightly over a quarter of them new faces. So introduce yourselves!

I'm Maeve, your municipal liaison. That means I find the meeting places and get things started. This will be my sixth year doing NaNoWrimo. I'm hooked. *grin*

I come from a background in public relations, newspaper, magazine and freelance writing. My NaNo novels have been in either the fantasy and thriller genres. I'm revising two of them with an eye to trying to sell them (although that's not the point of NaNoWrimo. If NaNoWrimo has a point, it's to show you what you can accomplish if you try. A novel! In 30 days!)

Saturday the 14th

We don't have a formal Write-In planned (it's our fearless ML's birthday, and she will be elsewhere, celebrating). I thought I might go somewhere and work. As it is Dad's Weekend (and a game weekend?), I don't plan to go downtown; the crowds, the crowds. So I may go to Coffee Culture on 9th St. (where Gramma Dama's Donuts used to be). They have good coffee, some baked goods, free WiFi, outlets, a couch for people who want to be comfy and tables for those who don't. It's not a huge place but probably more workable than the one on Kings. It actually got pretty busy last time I was there, with a number of people doing what looked like schoolwork.

Not sure what time I'll go, maybe around 11. I won't have a NaNo sign (and I think my sweatshirt needs a wash!), but my computer has a purple protector and I have long, red(dish) hair.

TONIGHT:
Downtown Beanery Write-in as per usual. I will arrive... sometime between 5 and 6 p.m. The day has become turvey topped by topsy with no whipped cream.

THIS WEEKEND:
There are no write-ins planned for this weekend, largely because I was asked months ago to not plan anything. (um, I get a year closer to 50 on Saturday. I apparently will be out of town. It's a surprise.)

HOWEVER, the day-long write-ins have been incredibly helpful to everyone, so I strongly encourage you to link up with a writing buddy or three or nine. If you can, spend a minimum of five hours on a single day. Both days if you can swing it. If you can't, cram in writing in two-hour blocks. Turkey Day is looming, and that means writing time will be precious and scant for some of you. Get as many hours in as you can this weekend!

Coffeeshops, libraries, restaurants on their off hours... find public venues that work for you this weekend and invite people to join you on this thread. Don't worry about getting everyone in one place-- the buddy system works (L. and I wrote together all summer).

I have to request no private residences or dorm rooms, please. (But if you have a meeting room in your apartment complex that you can snag for free and people are willing to travel to your part of town, go for it.)

Everyone is doing awesomely, and I include those of you who are annoyed at your word count. How much of a novel had you ever written before, this quickly? You're doing great! Write on!

DO NOT PUT WIDGETS IN YOUR .SIG (signature) FILE. Please.
Even if you see other people doing it. Widgets weren't turned on originally because they are a huge drain on the server, and if they have to be uploaded (and updated) on every single post people make, it REALLY slows down the website. The little bar by your name on each post is essentially a perma-widget, anyway.

That said, put them on your own webpage, put them on a facebook/Live Journal/Myspace page, put them on a page you create that sits on your server that only you see... they're fun, and they allow you to see your progress if you're going for a larger-than 50K goal, as well.

All for the increased silliness and joy...

Moving Write-In at Covered Bridges?

Anybody interested in doing a moving write-in? I was thinking doing a tour of some of the covered bridges in this area, and then stopping at each one to write for 30-60 minutes. It would be much more fun if we have a group and maybe carpool together in a van or something.

I just double-checked with Grassroots, and we're on for Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 or so. (I promised we'd be out of their hair by 5 p.m.) We'll be upstairs in the loft again.

So, who all is coming and when? I want to make sure I have enough tables and chairs set up.

BTW, they are having a National Bookseller's celebration and sale on Saturday, so a) it may be slightly busier and noisier at the cash register and b) book! sale! *grin*

Continuing the aside, as I was hunting for information about the sale, I discovered they are celebrating their 38th birthday as a business on the 13th of November (that's a long time for an independent bookstore--there aren't many left!) and they are having a "Worst First Sentence Competition" in the tradition of the annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest. Turn those awful words into winning ones! You can ask about it there on Saturday or check out their website. The deadline is Nov. 12.

Update about this post: i simul-posted this in all the Oregon forums, which has the interesting side effect of causing all replies to show up in each forum as well. I apologize for any confusion this may cause when arranging car pools. :S Feel free to continue using the original "You're invited!" thread in your region to organize - i still keep tabs on those as well.

1: We've got 36 50 people who have RSVP'd at this time. Awesome! But this means that there are only 24 10 more people who can come before i have to cut off RSVP's, because our room cap is 60. If you are planning on coming RSVP ASAP!

HOW TO RSVP: Please send your e-mail address to me either by nano mail or to MLbrightshadowsky(at)gmail(dot) com. I will send you an invite to the Google Calendar entry to this event. You do not have to have a google account to use this invitation. If you are RSVP'ing for a group please make sure to use the option where you state how many "guests" you're bringing (i know they're Wrimos and not "guests")

If you've accepted/declined/maybed the invite you got - THANK YOU! If you haven't, please go find that e-mail and confirm your RSVP. There's 11 people who i know said that they were coming and yet they haven't confirmed the e-vite yet.

2: tickets into the aquarium. I'm doing my best to acquire as many tickets as possible to get people in for free. i have about 15 free entries into the Aquarium lined up as of this moment. Obviously that's something of a shortfall. i'm going to do my best to get as many more as possible, but if you are able to afford the admission price (Adults (18-64) $14.95, Seniors (65+) $12.95, Young Adults (13-17) $12.25) please bring it with you just in case. We'll be taking advantage of the 10% discount that members get on all admission prices so you should get a discount if nothing else.

3: If we hit room capacity: i'll make sure to send an e-mail out to those who have already RSVP'd to remind them to update their status if they can no longer come, and begin compiling a waitlist. We can't exceed occupancy of the room, and there will be an official guest list we'll be checking people off against. Please RSVP - if you just show up at the event you can pay to get in and enjoy the aquarium but we won't be giving out any of the free passes to you and you won't be able to join us in the event room. I hate the prospect of having to lay down the law like that but i never expected this event to explode as it has!

4: Sorry for all the serious, heavy handed stuff, guys. :) We're going to have a great time, and i've already found myself in possession of one heck of an awesome raffle prize. i LOVE my chamber of commerce! And no, you don't get to know what it is yet. :)

Yes, I could click on every single person in this forum and see under the novel tab, but instead, anyone want to share here what sort of story you're planning on writing? I tend to remember people not by names or usernames, but by what they're writing. Even if you don't have a blurb, why not take a few minutes to write a few sentences? Here's mine:

title: Among the Saer

genre: YA science fiction

When seventeen-year-old Sarah Eaton unwittingly witnesses a fight between two warriors with strange powers and rescues twelve-year-old apprentice Thennison Padisi, she is drawn into the business of the Saer Guardians. An ancient order charged with guarding the connections between worlds and keeping caemon (ordinary people) from stumbling through them, a betrayal has left Thenny's master dead, their mission incomplete, and Thenny and Sarah the only witnesses to the existence of an illegal Saer group bent on a coup.

To infiltrate the sedition, Sarah dresses as a Saer Master, with Thenny posing as her apprentice but actually instructing and aiding her in using Saer technology. They two travel to the Saer headquarters to find the murderer and expose the conspirators.

Do we know if there will be any weekly write ins around Albany or Corvallis? I saw the ones in October and the Kick off Pary Thursday the 29th (which I'm very excited about and I will be at.) Write ins are always good for keeping up motivation, not to mention meeting fellow writers.

I'm super excited at this years NaNo ;p Just wanted to see what others in my area are planning. Anything at LBCC in Albany? Beaver hang outs? As long as you don't mind a Duck coming to write.

Welcome to the third annual Oregon All State Write-in! Newport, Oregon is honored to host this year's madness. :) We've got an awesome location this year - the Oregon Coast Aquarium! Which means that if you slack off on your word count we'll throw you to the sharks! (Not really. But i do wield a mean Sea Cucumber...) We'll be located in the Gleason Event Room at the end of "Passages of the Deep", and are planning on having a whole host of fun things to do, including word wars, inner editor inprisonment activites, and wandering around the Aquarium or the nearby Hatfield Marine Science Center (with or without me as your chatty naturalist guide. ^_^ )

For food there is a resturant on site, called Local Oceans. They have excelent seafood that's been caught right here off our coast. You can see their menu here You can also get a hand stamp (for re-entry to the Aquarium) and head out to the town (i'm happy to reccomend/take people to resturants).

Please RSVP as soon as you know you can come - an accurate head count is really important to us this year. For more info or to RSVP e-mail MLbrightshadowsky(at)gmail(dot)com. Also, if you are coming from farther afield and need to stay over in order to make it work please let me know. For those who would like to stay in a hotel i can reccomend cheap yet nice ones; i also have info on a very nice B&B. If money is an issue we may still be able to work things out - please contact me!

IMPORTANT: We are not being given complimentary admission to the aquarium (because they waived the room fee, hurrah!) so an accurate head count is VITAL, as we are attempting to find enough comp tickets and aquarium membership holders to get all Wrimos in free. Please, if you are coming, RSVP EARLY! If you have a few bucks we are going to take up a collection to help cover any extraneous admission fees if not enough comp tickets can be obtained. If all or part of this money is not needed (and i hope it's not) any left over will go directly to Nano as a donation. Can you donate to the admission fund? Let your local ML know and i'll be in touch with them.

Guests are welcome to come but limitations will have to be imposed in two areas:
1: Only Wrimos will be given comp tickets or a member's pass. Guests will need to purchase their own entry into the aquarium. Admission prices and other info can be found at the Aquarium website. (www.aquarium.org)

2: The maximum occupancy for our meeting room is 60. I'd be over the moon if we had that many people attend, but should this number be reached Wrimos will have precedence and guests will be asked to entertain themselves for a while.

It's in the first block off Ellsworth (which is what Hwy 20's name changes to as soon as you cross the bridge).

FYI: Charlie's (and much of downtown Albany) closes much earlier than the Corvallis Beanery.

OSU Write-ins

It looks like the consensus of the early arrivals, at least, is a 5 p.m. Monday eve gathering on the OSU campus for write-ins. Go you! I'll add that to the calendar.

Eventually I will need a more specific location; "meet us in the lobby" doesn't do any good for someone whose class runs a half-hour into your writing time, and not everyone will scroll through the conversation threads to find out where to go. If you could give me a spot after the Oct. 26 gathering? That would be grand.

The Atrium-y area Miriamele refers to ... is that on the third floor? What I call the ground or main floor, the one with the main entrance off the big lawn, is the *SECOND* floor. (Don't blame me, I didn't set the numbers in the building! *grin*) The coffeeshop is on the first floor. It can be confusing if people are accustomed to using different entrances. Okay, it's just plain confusing.

I had thought people were meeting on the third floor last year but looking at the map I can't see an atrium area. Mirimele, can you tell me where on this map of the third floor it's located?

There's a fourth-floor circular 'quiet study" area at the bottom left of this map that looks like the area I thought people were using, but I doubt you were using a quiet study space.

Egad. I've been IN that building I don't know how many times, you'd think I'd know it better than that! Obviously time to go check out some books.

Mondays aren't available for me, so I can't join you. But I've ridden a bike to campus from south town for the better part of a year so I can understand how a student without a car would dislike riding in the dark and rain to the downtown events. (Been there, done that. Meh.) That said, you might want to discuss a carpool to get to the Kickoff at Woodstock's. I'd really hate for people to miss out on pizza!

I need to tell Jack how many people we're expecting (and I need to know how many tables to set up). I got a headcount of about 12 from the kickoff last night. If you *didn't* tell me you were coming already, could you let me know here? Rails, I saw your post this morn, so I've already added you. If anybody else has mentioned it in another thread, could you repeat yourself here?

Also, yell if you have a power strip you can and will bring with you (no matter what time you're coming, because some early-arrivals might need to leave and take theirs with them.)

Speaking of early, TURN YOUR CLOCKS BACK an hour Sunday morning so you don't inadvertently show up an hour early!

Can't wait to start writing. Still have no idea what I'm writing ABOUT, though... *chews nails*
