I've been watching James Bond movies and going for long walks outside! I've just been so sick of my characters and not being able to figure out what they want. Doesn't help that I feel like a pretty crummy writer. x_x

What have you been doing instead of kicking your word count up to the final 50k? (Unless you have been kicking up your word count in which case, I salute your strength of will!)

Post-Nano Writing Workshop

First of all, congrats to those of you who officially won! Huzzah! Second of all, double huzzah to those of us who gave it our all and didn't reach 50K! Even if we didn't "finish" we still stuck with our novels all month. So don't be sad you don't get a shiny winner's badge...... well, you can be kinda sad. I am. A little. :-( Onto better things!

I'm organizing a post-nano writing workshop for anyone who's interested. It doesn't have to be your nano novel. I really want to be in a workshop again and would love to read and talk about any writing that anyone else is working on and is willing to share. I want to assure you that I am super serious about this venture; this is something I'm dedicated to 500%.

My apologies to the group for my inability to adequately perform as ML this year.

I had a series of migraines that have left me useless for much of anything. I didn't even make over 10K words! I'm devastated!

Congrats to those who reached the mark (and exceeded it!).

For those who didn't it's okay, really. It was an exercise that perhaps you at least learned something from. I learned that not all ideas in my head are good outside of there. This led to me considering how long an idea should remain in my head before allowing it out. (this one has been in there for years) I also learned I enjoy hanging with other writers.

I am elated but a little sad that I submitted my 50,000 words today. My novel is incomplete and I'm probably going to keep pounding out words till the end of the month. I can't believe another November is drawing to a close. I can't believe I won for the second year in a row after 2-3 years of utter failure.

West Asheville Meet Ups

If anyone else is interested in meeting in Westville. :-D I'm happy with Saturday or Sunday but Saturday is best. Anytime after 11 AM works for me. My ideas for meeting places are:

Lucky Otter - burritos, pizza (after 5), great beer on tap, margaritas, nice big tables they don't mind if you move around or sit at for hours on end

West End Bakery - soup, sandwiches, bagels, all kinds of great coffees, tea, juice, salad, good sized tables and again don't seem to mind how long you sit as long as you order something

Bean Werks - okay I've never actually BEEN here, but I've always wanted to and they roast their own coffee and I hear it's really really good!

These are all onHaywood Road in West Asheville. You can take 240W straight down Patton to get there or just stay on 240 and get off at the West Asheville exit. (I think that's right, I'm always too busy driving to read the sign!)

Any other suggestions would be fantastic! Those are just the three places I like best. :-D

I am painfully punctual so I will bring tent cards and color them up all nicely with highlighters. I'll probably be sitting off to the right when you first come in the door because the bigger tables are there. And if you're there before 6 and see a girl with a brown messenger bag walk in the door, wave because it's me! ;-)

Where to write late at night?

I like to write after I get off work at Starbucks between 11 and 11:30pm and I am getting kind of sick of Waffle House on Tunnel Road (even they are really cool and nice). Can anyone think of somewhere else that might be open late and friendly to a writer (and preferably has a smoking section but not required)? I don't need power outlets, just somewhere to park it without spending too much money.

So, at the write-in tonight, I decided to completely scrap my story and start all over. This time, I'm writing a children's/young-adult slightly fantasy story about a little girl who sees/talks to faeries and is dealing with a teacher who thinks she is crazy, as well as her parents who are going through a divorce. Should prove to be interesting...however...I ONLY HAVE 229 WORDS! Panic is settling in.

I will be word warring online later tonight. I'll post a message in the forums when I'm ready to go.

Music and Writing

Recently in the WriMo blog, Chris talked about what music he usually listens to while writing. Some songs seem to inspire better than others. So I was just going to extend his question to those here who may not have seen it (cuz I'm nosey and I wanna know what you have to say lol):

What music/song do you most listen to while writing? Or do you even listen to music at all while you're working?

Currently I'm listening to Will Smith's latest album- Lost and Found. It's a little hard to work while listening because it makes me think too much during certain songs, but a few of them get me in the groove. After this I'll probably listen to Seryoga. He's a Russian hip-hop/rap artist. I tend to do well while listening to him because his stuff is really bouncy and that helps my fingers to move along lol.

I'm so sorry I haven't been around the forums (or meetups) lately. I am also sorry that I didn't post a message to let you know I was going to be out of town. I had to go on a business trip and only just got back in town late last night. I'm a little jet lagged but all in all I'm feeling well enough to go to the write-in at ABC tonight! I look forward to seeing you all there, and catching up, and working on my very sad word count!!

*sigh* I better get my butt in gear or I'll never reach 50k!

NaNo Weekly gatherings

Who is up for meetings each week?

Various places are:

Atlanta Bread Company - loads of tables and space and some outlets; there's one on 25 near I40 and there's another on Merriomon Ave.

Meeting rooms at various restaurants such as Denny's - space, but not sure about outlets and they'd probably make us order something ;-)

Coffee houses - they're everywhere! they're everywhere!

Requirements for places - coffee and/or drinks and/or muffins and/or something chocolate; outlets for those who need to power laptops; table space; wheelchair accessible (no steps)

Any ideas where? It doesn't have to be one place all the time. It can be moved each week. We can meet several times a week to accommodate everyone or just once or heck, not at all.

Days of the week or weekend? Afternoon? Evening? Daytime? Crack o' dawn? Night owl?

No Tuesday (Bones night) or Thursday (CSI night) for me. Other than that, I am wide open.

I was on a roll tonight. I FINALLY fell into a fitting voice for my first person narrator, was flowing in a solid direction with her words, was really building up to a story that the reader would want to stick around for -

and Word went into a #$&(&$(@&(&#@$'ing error loop.

What made it more cruel was that the little auto recovery bar would tempt me with hope but every time I clicked on the file name it would crash yet again............ and start all over. I was finally forced to hand copy what text was frozen on the screen before the program rebooted AGAIN (I persisted in vain hope that the file would accidentally load for about 40 minutes before I gave up).

But all hope is not lost! I hand copied about 80% from the screen freeze. The other two paragraphs...... luckily it was the older autosave because I decided I didn't need them!

I am resuming typing in Gmail. Screw Word!!!!! x_x

I am leaning toward Wednesday just because it is further away. Also, I have a 150 gallon fish tank in the back of my truck I need to get out of there and I can't until Saturday morning.

What's your story?

A big warm welcome to everybody...especially the newcomers. This is a fun adventure, to be sure.

Sounds like some really interesting story ideas. Mine is a cyber love story: Two people meet online, have a long digital courtship, eventually meet...weirdness ensues but they ultimately stay together. What exactly the weirdness is, other than just plain awkwardness, I'm not sure yet. It will come. It will come. That's my mantra.

The story is HEAVILY based on real life, as I've had many a failed cyber romance...and my husband is my successful one. I think it is a little boring...but people tell me its kind of interesting. *shrug* We'll see.

What about everyone else? What's your story?

Online meetings

I thought I'd start a thread for this.

It is common for folks to form an online chat "room" via one of the instant messaging programs. They either form impromtu or they are scheduled ahead of time.

Here are my usernames:

AIM - paulaoff

I use a program called Trillian so I have all four of them up at the same time within one program.

One person decides to open the chat room and then "invites" the others as they come online. The beautiful thing with this is that you don't have to have all these people in your "buddies" list. They are visible to you (and you to them) only in the chat room.

There's also Bravenet java chatrooms which are free but the ads and the java script can bog down slower computers.

In the online rooms, there's usually Word Wars. This is where everyone agrees on a set amount of time (say, 10 minutes or even 30). Someone is the time keeper and at the end of the time, everyone posts their word counts. Another type of Word War is to agree to an amount of words (say, 1000) and everyone races toward it. During either version, it is quiet in the room so that those participating are not distracted.

So, there you have it. I have no life and sit here at the computer almost all day (I am rarely online before 10am) and most of the night. So if you see me online, just tap on my shoulder. :-D
