[Sticky] Help Chris Baty, Lindsey, MattKinsi, Tiakall, and Sushi make fools out of themselves on Tuesday 11/24

Calling all Pandas! Calling all Pandas!

Quote:
This Tuesday NaNoWriMo is having a fundraising drive. And if they get 100,000 donations world wide on that day, the staff will make complete fools out of themselves, and we'll get to watch it.

Help us embarrass ourselves this Tuesday!

You may have noticed the Fund-o-Meter has been getting very colorful lately. We've seen a heartening surge in donations from participants, and we've continued to add our non-donor income to the totals, including all the money from merch sales.

Our goal before December 1 is to fill up all the books in the Fund-o-Meter, pay for both NaNo and YWP, and raise enough money to spend 2010 working on all the improvements laid out in those books, including developing a year-round version of NaNoWriMo.

To make sure we get there, we're going to host an all-day online fundraising drive on Tuesday the 24th. For it, we've set ourselves the crazy goal of raising $100,000 in donations in 24 hours. The most we've ever raised in a single day is $30,000, so this is a little loony.

But we have faith. We also have a very special offer.

If NaNoWriMo and the Young Writers Program can raise $100,000 in donations through our online Donation Station on Tuesday the 24th, I will write a song about the fundraising drive—tentatively entitled "That Beautiful Tuesday"—and perform it on NaNoVideo with staff musical accompaniment and Lindsey doing an interpretive dance alongside us.

This video will be a keepsake that NaNoWriMo participants of all ages can treasure and wince at for decades to come. Better still, your donations will mean we can bring back NaNoWriMo and the YWP for another great year of inspiration and encouragement in 2010.

The drive commences at 12:01 AM Pacific on Tuesday the 24th and runs till 11:59 PM Pacific that night. Thanks for helping us in our wordy mission!

Chris

That means all donations we make from 3:01 AM on the 24th to 2:59 AM on the 25th will go towards this goal of oddity.

I, in particular, would love to see Lindsey do an interpretive dance. She hails from these parts, ya know. Lets punish her for moving out to SanFran by donating everything we can so she does this interpretive dance.

Now, here's just a few ways how you can donate:
a) Make a donation via the Donation/Store. Make sure you are homed with Atlanta before doing this! We have over 1900 who are affiliated. Heck, if everyone who just has a word count in Atlanta right now would donate 10 dollars, that would be a solid 5,000 dollars towards this hilarity.
b) Is 10 dollars a stretch for you right now? We totally understand. Hit up one of the write ins this weekend with a (ML) next to it, and whatever you can, drop it in a tip jar, and we'll get it to HQ on Tuesday.
c) CHANGE! I've got oodles of it. I want everyone to bring all their spare change buckets to one of the write ins this Sunday - either at Borders or at Caribou. I'll bring mind, and then I'll take it off to get counted. (If I use coinstar, which I will, I will make sure that I will donate the 6 or 8% they take out, so every penny you donate goes to NaNo and not, well, coinstar.) Let's see how much change we can wrack up to donate this Tuesday.

Let's donate our spots off Pandas of Atlanta!

Lets use this as a place to make pledges, so we don't forget to actually donate on Tuesday :-)

----------

And it begins. A good way to begins is finding out who and where we are.

Hi, I'm Sushi. People who don't know me as Sushi often call me Sujin. Call me either; I'll answer to either. I graduated from Agnes Scott in May with math and French majors and am still on the job prowl. (If anyone knows of someone who needs a number cruncher/writer/editor/social media maven/general savvy person in Atlanta, please let me know.) Currently I live in Stone Mountain near the Indian Creek MARTA station. No, I have not been to the park. This needs to change.

NaNo-related, I've participated in and completed every NaNo since 2002. In the Script Frenzy realm, I've completed every one since its inception.

Who are you? Don't be shy; we don't bite.
[Sticky] The NaNoLanta Annual Peach Dare

We're starting (another) new tradition here in Atlanta. Every year, we are going to work a peach into our novel. Now, this year we want just a normal, regular old peach. Who knows what kind of peach will be next year's dare? Could be a plastic peach, a peach tree, a miscolored peach, etc. But this year it's a regular, normal, run of the mill peach.

So this year, we have a dare for you. Work in a peach...somewhere in your NaNo, and join your NaNoLanta brothers and sisters in our peachiness.

And when you've worked it in, please post the excerpt on this thread, so everyone else can revel in your peach-ness and applaud you for taking up the dare!
New to Georgia, but not to NaNo. Conyers/Lithona?

Hi All,
I'm Renda and I'm new to the area. I've been the Seattle ML for 3 years, and I've been doing NaNo for 5. I'm living in Conyers and I have to say the transition is a rough one - especially during NaNoWriMo. I flew back for the first 3 weeks and worked as the ML in Seattle, but now I'm wondering what's going on here in the Atlanta area.

It looks like a lot of the write-ins are happening in the north-east section of Atlanta. I don't mind traveling a bit, but I'm not sure what the bigger ones are or if there are actually some happening closer to me. I'm also hoping to network with other writers and possibly create a writing group for post-nano. I find writer's groups a really excellent way to meet like-minded people and friends. I've recently published my first novel, run my own small press, and of course this will year's NaNo will be my new project.

I'm also wondering what good resources there are for writers in Atlanta. If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.

Thank you! I look forward to meeting some new people in the greater Atlanta area.

Endings

Okay, so my book is nearing its end. And suddenly, I'm terrified. The beginning and middle flowed pretty well, but as the end comes...I'm freaking out! I know what needs to happen in order for the book to end, it's just I'm not quite sure how to get it to happen. My heroine is currently sulking in her bedroom as the villian and another main character are fighting in the yard below.

WTH. Seriously.

Is anyone having a hard time ending their opus?
Question for you professional or wannabe professional writers out there...

My "first ever" nano is going to kill me if I don't kill it first, and my hopes of reaching 50K are quickly dimming, but the writing bug has definitely bitten, and I'd like to pursue it further once Nano is over. It's something I've always just kind of toyed with, but I think I'm ready to take the bull by the horns and just DO it!

Do any of you have any information on good websites for writers? Also for any legitimate short story contests? (I've heard there are a lot of 'predatory' contests out there that are really just trying to sell you stuff.)

Thanks!

Stacie

Alllooo All!

First off, sorry for spamming your boards. But, I figured you guys would want to listen to this!

For those of you who don't know, I interviewed your ML on our little Radio Show! We talk for about 10 minutes or so, maybe even longer!

To hear your lovely ML, check out the archive:

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elumir/2009/11/21/toronto-nanowrimo-radio-s...

I also like to play songs on the radio show, and mattkinsi was bragging about a certain ukelele player. So I am looking for songs to play. That's a hint. :D

Okay, all you NaNoLantians.

I know, I know.

You haven't even had a chance to recover from this one yet.

But some of us try to write year round.

We may not get much writing done without the NaNo community to support us but we're willing to give it a go again.

We're hoping for your help.

Reply here if you'd be interested in an unofficial July NaNo event.

We have declared war on Denver!

Howdy NaNoLanta-

We have declared war on Denver, in the friendly competition sort of way.

Last year, there were one spot above us in the final word count.
We were 19th with 10,950,215 words, and they were 18th with 11,107,174 words.

Last year we donated 1,265.00 and ranked 21st for donations, and they ranked 12th with 1,950.00 donated.

We can totally beat them...in both areas.

So, throughout this year's NaNoWriMo, we will be battling Denver over which mountains of words reigns supreme - our Appalachians or their Rockies.

----------
Back for year #6, and MLing for the first time. Go NaNoLanta!
Sentence Bazaar

Someone suggested this to me, but since he didn't post it, I'm going to. This is a place to leave sentences from your novel and let other people borrow them, as well as other people leaving theirs for you to borrow.

I'll start us off with a few:

"I can tell the difference between a live human and a dead human, thank you very much!"

"It doesn't exactly come with an instruction manual."

"I'm bored with being a prince," he declared. "I think I'll quit."

The house proceeded to explode.
If Atlanta beats last year's total, I will donate...

Last year our total word count in Atlanta was 10,950,215.

The day we break that total, I will make a donation. Now, this is not going to count the people who put in the 999,999 as their wordcount, as I will be subtracting those out so we can get our legitimate word count.

And, to provide motivation, here's the formula that will decide my donation:

(30 - x) * 5

Where x is the date we break through last year's total.

So, lets say we hit it on the 19th...

(30-19) * 5 would mean yours truly will make a 55 dollar donation to NaNoWriMo.

Every day I'll post our updated wordcount, so we can see how much we have left to go. The wordcounts I post here will have the 999,999 stuff taken out, so use these wordcounts as a judge and not the numbers up on the stats stuff.

So, the quicker everyone writes, the more the donation to NaNoWriMo shall be. Write write write everyone!

11/17:
Our current wordcount is 8,761,263.
We have 2,188,953 words till be break last year's amount.
RIP UGA VII

Tragedy has struck the Georgia Bulldog nation. Our beloved mascot, UGA VII, has gone on to the big doghouse in the sky due to a heart attack. He was loved, even though he was only here for less than two years. One radio reporter, Loran Smith, even claimed that the dog was lucky, because he was number seven. He shall be missed.

MARTA Write-In

So, some of us were talking and we thought it would be fun to claim one of the MARTA train cars and use it for a write-in. Thinking 11-21-2009, Saturday. Starting around 4 or 5 and going until batteries run out or it's too cold. XD
The easiest thing to do would be to "mark" either the first to last car so it's easy to find. :P

What do you guys think? Any takers? Suggestions?
Atlanta v. Austin Online Word War - Friday, 9pm eastern, 8pm Central. Join us!

The Pandas of NaNoLanta will be taking on the Penguins of Austin this friday night at 9 eastern/8 central time in an online word war. There will be at least two separate 15 minute wars, one will be determined by the highest average, and another by the top 2 participants on each side. So, join us in the regional chatroom and root your side on.

The Atlanta room is at http://goodchatting.com/rooms/nanolanta.php
The Austin room is at http://goodchatting.com/rooms/nanoaustin.php

A few minutes before the start time, join up in your regional room to participate.

If you're an IRC geek, the server is irc.goodchatting.com and the rooms are #nanolanta and #nanoaustin

This will hopefully be put up in linked between both regions if I don't mess it up :-) So, use this thread for some good spirited smack talk :-D

Go Pandas!
