Third Annual Lock-In

*Crossposted from the regional email*

Hello wrimos!

The lockin is fast coming upon us and I am very excited. This is our third annual lock-in and we always have people who hit 10K during the day so this is a great opportunity to catch up if you're behind in your word count! I think we had four 10K wrimos last year. I was not one of them, but this is going to be my year for hitting that number!

What you need to Bring: Your lunch, a snack that can be shared, and $5 for pizza.

Date: Saturday, November 21, 2009.

Time: This is a drop-in event so feel free to come any time after 9 am and be prepared to stay as late as you would like to stay. Last year, we ended things around midnight, but if you want to stay later you are more than welcome to.

Location: My house

My address is

112 Peppergrass Dr
Elgin, SC 29045

The bad news is that for whatever reason my address has not made it to google maps yet. Soooo..here are directions.

From Downtown Columbia and all points west.

Take I-20 to Florence. Exit on the Spears Creek Church Road exit (I think this is exit 81). This exit is immediately after the Clemson road exit. Turn left on Spears Creek Church road. Drive about a mile and half. You will pass a school, a fire station and the housing development Walden Pond (these are on the left). You will turn left into Spears Creek Village. This is my housing development It is a small neighborhood. Take the first left (in reality it is the only left) and then the first right (again the only right). I am the third house from the end. My red cavalier will be parked out front. I will also put a big sign on the door. Please call me if you get lost!

From all other directions: Please call me on my cell phone, 843-319-4464. I will walk you through it.

I look forward to seeing you guys! If you need anymore information, let me know!

Thanks,

Vikki
Stranger Than Fiction (Even NaNo Fiction)

I don't know about you, but I used to worry that the plot twists I came up with during NaNo were just too far-fetched, that they strained suspension of disbelief too much, even for a NaNo novel. Alas, I don't feel that way anymore. Because if I'm ever looking at something in my novel and thinking "no one would ever believe that" or "that could never happen", all I have to do is take a good look at REAL LIFE to find something that actually happened which is a hundred times worse than any plot twist I could ever dream up.

So I'm starting this thread so we can all share our Stranger Than Fiction (Even NaNo Fiction) moments. Please share the utterly strange and improbable you've witnessed during your travels through this world. Use those from other Wrimos as inspiration when your novel is slagging or just to bring a smile to your face when you're feeling the stress of the coming weeks.

I'll start.

The other night, one of my husband's coworkers was in a car accident. Don't worry -- though he's banged up, he will be alright and no one else was injured. Except, of course, for the deer that ran out into the road in front of his car. Oh, and did I mention that he was driving home from work in a Santa costume so he could "get into character" for playing Santa at a company event the following night? Another of my husband's coworkers, upon hearing this tale (and after learning that Santa had not been gravely injured, of course), began singing a new Christmas carol: Santa Got Run Over By A Reindeer. Imagine, if you will, a) a guy in a Santa suit dealing with the aftermath of his car accident (e.g. giving a statement to the police, waiting for the tow truck, talking to the paramedics, etc) and b) people all over my husband's place of work singing Santa Got Run Over By A Reindeer under their breath for days after the event.

Now it's your turn. What have you seen that was Stranger Than Fiction?
Yeah Moments!

Celebration time. Did you make your word count? Make coffee? Actually get out of bed today?

What gave you a yeah today?

============================================================================

I just looked at my word count to see how much further I needed to go today after doing a session of write - or - die and typing in my handwritten from last night.... YEAH! 2299! I'm such a dork.. but a happy dork. Lol even if I did decide at the almost last minute to change up which story I'd be writing... =D
The Official Cheerleader Thread

We had one of these last year and I can tell by the frustration in the posts this morning and last night that folks are starting to hit that roadblock called WEEK TWO so we definitely need it yet again.

Those of you who came to the kickoff and are having tough times, don't forget about your plot ninjas and rocks -- pull them out and USE THEM. There's also the matrixes for getting unstuck. Don't be afraid to use that absolutely non-sensical idea (like introducing a dinosaur in your romance novel) just to keep your fingers typing. True, if you're planning on revising, those crazy ideas might not make it to the next draft, but what they WILL do is get you writing. And that will get your brain moving. And before you know it, you're right back on track again.

Tonight I'll be at the Panera Bread in Sandhills from 6 until 9. We'll have teh interwebs. If you can't come to the write in but you still have internet, head over to Twitter and watch the updates posted by prismjourney or watch the forums here. I'll be posting the starts and stops of our word wars in both places so you can "compete" with us and snag some much needed words from the ether.

Now everybody leave your requests for cheers or kicks in the pants and don't forget to leave encouragement for someone else -- we're all in this crazy thing together!!!

My need: Please challenge me to hit 3k words tonight. I've simply got to get ahead again because...well...because I'm crazy like that.

(One last thing: Have you added all of our Columbia challenges into your novel yet? So far we've got:
-someone walks into a bar and is immediately punched in the face.
-a potted plant
-the words "least epic battle ever"
Winner of the first word war this evening gets to pick another new challenge for us all to add to our novels...)
Plot Ninja

I got desperate and opened my plot ninja, unfortunately I haven't been able to use it yet. But I will soon!
Here it is:

One character learns a secret that causes him/her to radically change there option on an important matter or character.

What are you listening to?

I know that our profile page asks us for what kind of music we like to listen to while we write, but I'm really lazy and don't feel like going to read everyone's individual profile. So what do you usually listen to when you write? Do you listen to anything at all, or do you find music too distracting?

I find it depends on my mood. Sometimes it helps to have no music on, but tonight I've been rocking out to the Tori Amos box set (I worship her). And tonight I just happened to put in my best one-day word count ever. Coincidence? I'm too much on a roll to try to find out!
So How Can I Write for NaNo if I Get Evicted?

Let me briefly say that while this is a rather serious situation, I am not looking for sympathy. I am attempting to make this situation a little humorous as hubby and I decide where to go from here.

The following is what's been going on this week in the lives of snapefan4life and President_Bartletts_Desk:

We paid our rent through a money order and sent it off two weeks ago so it would arrive in the landlord's P.O. box early. We received a visit from him last Friday asking if we were alright since he had not received the money order. As of today, he has not received it and we cannot afford to pay another rent bill this month - we barely make it month to month as it is, like so many other young couples. So, if he does not receive another rent payment in 7 days, we are most likely going to be evicted - I don't see another option in the lease and we simply cannot afford to pay any more. [I did send him the bank statement that showed that I had taken out rent payment at the Wal-mart Money Centre 3 days previous to the rent being due] SO...

I knew this was going to happen when he said he did not receive a money order. My mind immediately set about mentally packing up everything and trying to decide what to do. Hubby hoped the check would arrive [to his credit] but I had my suspicions...the money order is only made out to the landlord and his wife. Therefore, nobody else could cash it, right? So...either it DID get lost in the mail [it was only going to Camden for pete's sake, and we've sent it this way for months] or...one of them cashed it and either a) didn't tell the other and pocketed the money or b) they told us they had not received it and DID and are keeping it and kicking us out for whatever reason.

I know, I know, I have way too big of an imagination, but that's what I think. My theory is that it fell into the landlord's wife's hands and she is keeping it for herself. Of course, this is all just something I would write - I'm not going to out and out accuse her because really, that would be a stupid thing for her to do, and she isn't that stupid. I just can't believe it got lost in the mail. And we called Wal-mart [where we purchased the money order] and they refused to help, and we called MoneyGram, which also refused to help unless we paid $40 in processing fees and were willing to wait 6-8 weeks.

Anyway, whatever happened to the money order, it is apparently gone.

My plan is to:

1. Rent a storage unit and move all of our furniture/books/miscellaneous stuff in there
2. Beg to stay with someone until we can find an apartment
3. Rent a super cheap apartment until we decide where we are going from here.

So, I'm not worried. There is no use worrying or crying or being pessimistic. This stuff happens all the time and, hopefully, something good will come out of this. The only thing I am concerned about at the moment is how I am going to NaNo in the midst of packing up our dog, my dollhouses, hubby's office, and our Christmas stuff. [Amongst other things]

Here are some humorous situations I might be writing in:

1. I might be writing in/living in [illegally] a storage unit
2. I might be writing/living in our car
3. I might be sprawled out on the living room floor at our friends' house [where we stayed last holidays since our heat wouldn't work for three months - that was a different house though] writing frantically while trying to keep the dogs off me
4. I might be writing in Walmart while resting in the chair aisle, and then go to sleep in the pillow aisle
5. I might be writing while on the couch at my in-law's house [they're humorous so I might be laughing]
6. I might be writing while we're 'camping' in a tent somewhere in the wilderness while we try to find a house to stay in
7. I might be writing on a bench at the museum while I scout places to hide so we can live there [a la The Mixed-Up Files...]
8. I might be writing while people are moving all our crap from the house to the storage unit - I'll be in the back of the truck
9. I might be writing on the plane if we move overseas with my parents [this is the most unlikely scenario since tickets are through the roof, but you never know what will happen so it's at least an option at this point]
10. I might be writing while we are driving off into the sunset, seeking out new adventures and cheap rentals

That list cheered me up. :) Hope you all have better situations than this at present and we might make it tonight to the write-in to see you all. We will probably be late as hubby gets off work around 5 and then we will eat some dinner and pick up a friend...expect us around 6:30, perhaps. I'll be bringing my notebook and pen.

Week One is Done....How did you do?

Okay...So we're entering week two.....How did your first week go? Did you get all the words that you hoped to get? My handy dandy spreadsheet tells me that we should be at 15,003 words by bedtime tonight. Are you there or have you fallen behind?

If you have, not to worry. There is still plenty of time to catch up.
A WriMo in Need

So, I'm in a pickle.

I got one of my dream jobs last week. Tomorrow is my second day working at PetSmart, and my first day of actually being able to do something (thank you, instructional videos! x_X).

Problem is, my tire is completely flat. As in, wire/metal-is-showing-through-it flat. Will-explode-if-you-drive-on-it flat. My roommates aren't free to take me to a tire store, and I work at 12:30 tomorrow. The closest tire store is more than a mile away, and I'm really not able to walk there, walk back and install a tire before noon.

I have an offer of a ride to work for tomorrow, but there are a few issues with it.
1) Most obviously, it's only a one-way ride.
2) It doesn't get my tire fixed, so I'd still need to wrangle a ride to a tire store later.
3) It's someone I'd really rather avoid owing a favor.

So, my question (request? Frantic plea?) has two parts. I live in downtown Columbia, but I work in Irmo. I need one of two things: either a ride from Irmo to downtown Columbia around 4:30 (or later -- I'm not picky), or a ride to a downtown tire store sometime before 11am so I can change the tire myself. The latter is vastly preferable, but I'm not in a position to be picky.

I feel really awkward asking this, since it's hardly NaNo-relevant, but I'm feeling helpless right now. My other option is my boyfriend's family, and to put it mildly, they're less than enamoured of me. I have no problems with doing things for them, but asking favors of them puts me in a position that I'd do pretty much anything to avoid. (Thomas, please don't mention this post to Edward if you read it).

I can pay gas money, and I'm okay with waiting for a while after work if no one is able to come at 4:30. If you're able to help (I'll love you forever), please call me so I can talk to the person who offered me the one-way ride. I'm going to post my number in the next post, since you can't edit the initial post and I don't want my number on the internet for all of eternity.

I hate begging for rides, but I'm really desperate right now.

Last night I went to open up my plot ninja (I needed a bit of a boost) and the envelope was GONE!

What am I going to do now?!

I'm going to beg. 8D

Anyone who wants to (c'mon, I know some of you have to have some crazy ideas), PM me a "plot ninja"! I promise I won't read the PMs unless I really need them (I do, I do!) or until the end of Nano (because you know I'll want to see what you offered me eventually.)! Please please! I need plot ninjas! Mine vanished in a puff of smoke and I can't find them (stupid sneaky things.).
Daily Word Count Goal?

Do you all have goals to reach each day? Mine are definitely more like guidelines that can be toppled by the least distraction, mainly the show Criminal Minds, Top Chef, Project Runway....(BIG sigh, you see my problem). I wondered, though, do most of us here have an actual daily goal?
TED Talks About Creativity

Author Elizabeth GIlbert talks about creativity, especially fear of failure and success, and how to break through those and just be a creative person. Or as youtube puts it:

"Eat, Pray, Love" Author Elizabeth Gilbert muses on the impossible things we expect from artists and geniuses -- and shares the radical idea that, instead of the rare person "being" a genius, all of us "have" a genius. It's a funny, personal and surprisingly moving talk.

Write-Ins

**crossposted from the regional email***

Yay! In less than 48 hours, the chickens, steampunk pirates, enchanted daggers, bioweapons, monsters, spies, cats, and other nonsense will be taking over our brains! I love Nano. We get to indulge our insanity and write novels that will include trebuchets, ninjas, and all the words that we can type.

Kalayna and I will be hosting write-ins all over town. So without further ado, here is the schedule!

SUNDAYS

We will be hosting a write-in at the main library beginning at 2pm and ending at 5pm. This week, we will be meeting in the Baker and Baker conference room. Because, we are only allowed to schedule one meeting at a time. The conference room will likely change from week to week so stay tuned for updates!

Richland County Public Library - Main Branch
1431 Assembly Street
Columbia, SC 29201

TUESDAYS

Join us From 6pm until close at Panera Bread in Sandhills for word wars and key pounding.

Panera Bread
631-6 Promenade Place
Columbia, SC 29229

WEDNESDAY

We'll be holding write-ins at Baker Bros on Main Street from 5:30 pm until 8 pm. It is really close to campus and totally walkable for you USC students. For those of you who aren't students (like me), Baker Bros customers are allowed to park in the parking garage next to the restaurant so you won't have to fight for the spots along the street.

Baker Bros
601 Main St. Ste. A
Columbia, SC 29201

SPECIAL EVENTS
November 21 – Lock-in. Details will be announced closer to the event so keep checking in

November 30 – Last minute write-in to pound out those last few words. Come and finish your novels with us.

I would also like to plan a couple of Saturday events in the Lexington area, but we have nothing confirmed yet so for those wrimos living in the Lexington area, stay tuned!

We look forward to seeing you at the write-ins and at the kickoff tomorrow! Shameless plug – The kickoff will be held from 2- 4 at the Barnes and Noble on Forest Drive.

Happy writing,
Introduce yourself!

Tell us a little about yourself and what you're writing.

I'll start. My name is Vikki Perry and this will be my third nanowrimo. In my spare time when I'm not writing, I like to knit and watch endless episodes of MASH.

I write romance and I've "won" both times that I've done Nano. My first nano was a historical romance set in World War II Charleston. My second was a paranormal romance. This one will be a contemporary romance about second chances.

I'm also the co-ML of the Columbia region for the second year in a row. Looking forward to meeting everyone!
Wildly wrong on my length expectation

So, if any of you have read Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy, you know how mind-blowingly awesome it is. You probably don't know how it parallels the first quarter of my book rather nicely in length, time-flow and general subject. I've been using it as a pacing novel in my mind (originally subconsciously, now deliberately).

I just used Amazon's "text stats" feature to check the length on it, and I was terribly wrong on how long the novel ought to be. I was thinking that 100k would be aiming kind of high for Only Child. Not so. I intend it to be slightly longer than Assassin's Apprentice (Hobb's first book), which puts it well over 150k.

This is a good thing and a bad thing.

It's good because it means I can take a breather. I've been worried that I was going to have to seriously abbreviate some of the ending scenes to come close to fitting within 100k. I'm writing in a strange style this year, and it's much wordier than what I'm used to. (I like it, but it's throwing off my estimations).

This is a bad thing because there's no way in high hell I have the slightest chance of finishing it this month. At all. Ever. Could not be done. I can write 3k per day on it. That's doable. 5k is getting a little ridiculous. I can write 6k in a day, sure, and could probably do so regularly, but I can't focus all of that energy on one story. I think I'd explode if I spent that much brain power on OC per day. I have too much invested in it.

So that leaves me with a problem. My options are as follows:
-- Scrap OC for the 8th (9th?) time and work on something I can feasibly complete in November.
-- Write at current speed on OC (2-3k per day), do 3-4k in other projects per day (which WILL be finished by November's end) and just finish OC over winter break
-- Write a really dumbed-down version of OC, then beef it up in editing (even so, it'd probably be 100k)
-- Write like a demon from the depths of hell and hope beyond hoping that a decent first draft of a novel of this length can be pounded out in a month.

Mind you, this is the furthest I've gotten on OC, plot-wise. I've had more words before (I think? Not by much if I did), but I've just written the first scene that hasn't appeared in any of the other drafts. (We're ignoring the draft where I started in what is now the middle of the story). To scrap it now would hurt like hell, especially since I've scrapped it at around this stage of the game.. three years in a row. Ouch. I don't want to let go of it, but I also really don't want to lose WriMo again.

Anyone having similar woes, or am I alone in this paddle-less creek?
Day one--how'd you do?

Still plenty of time to get those words in and rack up some extra words to keep you ahead of schedule--I know I'm going to need all the extra words I can type down.

But for those who have achieved their goal already and feel like stalking the forums: How'd everyone do today? Any records broken from last year already? New frontiers crossed? Surprising plot twists? New characters already popping out of the woodwork?

I've already got 4292 words and I'm considering stopping due to lack of sleep ;) Maybe I should press on though: I had a little bet with Orphanator that I'd get more words than he did today -- so we'll see who mocks who at work tomorrow. (muhahaha)

The only thing I figured out today was that I'm going to be doing a lot of narrative summary in the coming days because pantzing right from the word GO is terrifying for me. ^_^;; No wait, that's not true. I learned that I currently handwrite faster than I type (This does not bode well for carpal tunnel and word wars, folks) so I may have to do lots and lots of word wars to shape up my typing fingers on this little netbook keyboard. This is in addition to yesterday, when I also learned that some people will trick or treat until 10 at night if you leave your porch light on.

The more you know...
The Siren Call of the Editor

My inner editor is writhing in agony, I hear calls, reasonable calls, from his cage over the pool of Ill tempered mutant sea bass.

“You’re on the right track.” He says, and I agree with him, I’ve always been susceptible to flattery.

“Just let me out and I’ll help you polish that.” He cringes at my next sentence “Son, its ok to hit delete, trust me I’ve deleted plenty of things.” My next sentence stutters along as I grit my teeth at the unpolished diamond in the rough I’m working on.

“Let’s be honest you and I.” He has my attention I want this diamond hacked out of the jungle of misspelled words and poor grammar. (Not that he would help that much on that we are math people him and I.) “You can do those words AND a little bittie bit of revision. Your word count will be a little lower today but they will be good words, words you like and you know you want to work the “Rip the secrets from their flesh” line in there somewhere.” He’s right I do want to work it in. I don’t’ know where. I don’t know how, yet, but at some point today it’s going to worm its way in.

“That’s why you need me, you aren’t writing horror and that’s the third group of empire scouts that you have croaked this chapter just let me out and we can plant some flowers over their graves, maybe some nice Azaela’s.” I’m tempted to listen to him, to press the release button, to let that little apple polisher go to town. It would be foolishness not to listen to the elders, to the ones who have gone before. Get the words in then do the editing in December. My editor cries gnashing his teeth on the bars.

“Come on your not even trying now, just let me out your only hurting yourself.” He wails. I stubbornly continue on finding another gem to be polished in December, I flesh it out a bit, digging my fingers into the rock so I’ll remember where it was, remember to let my editor polish it to his heart’s content, just not now.

So how does your editor mess with you?
impromptu picnic write in

I'll be down at the USC Horseshoe enjoying the fine weather this afternoon. If anyone wants to join me for some word count in the great out doors, bring your favorite writing supplies--laptop, alphasmart, pen/paper, phoenix quill/dragon hide--and a picnic lunch.

I'll be there between 11:30 and 3:30. The park is at the intersection of College and Sumter in downtown Columbia. I shall be accompanied by my alphasmart and a stuffed blue-taloned yeti (I'm not kidding).

See you there! (Incandescent, this means you and your billion word day!)

Seeking Competition on Thursday (11/05)

So, I'm around 20,000 words behind where I want to be. I'm also absolutely refusing to give up this early in the game. It's all well and good to quit in week three when you realize you really, honestly can't sustain a grueling pace for an extended period of time. To quit on day three is just pathetic. So I'm still aiming for 200k, and I'm trying to find some way to make up my deficit.

I have no ability to motivate myself. If someone isn't breathing down the back of my neck, I get jackshit done. Always. So I'm looking for a conscience who wants to write a ridiculous amount this Thursday, so we can motivate each other. It can be in person (I offer my apartment as writing space, so long as you have no dog allergies), or we can motivate each other online. I just need someone to struggle with, and I thought it'd be more fun to get some local competition going.

Anyone want a rival?
Making a Banner

I have a question...

I spent the entire morning making/editing a banner for my sig, but now that I've chosen to use a banner that is supported by BBCode, it won't show up as anything but a link. :( [I tried the other options but they aren't working either]

Does anyone know how to get a banner from mybannermaker.com to show up as a sig?

Thanks.
