Regional Calendar

Okay, trying to get this working....

DANG Regional Calendar

Remember, you do not have to come to any write-ins. These are listed as places you can meet up with other writers if you so choose. Please note that Thursdays have two events at the same time on opposite sides of town. The event on Saturday is a morning write in for those early risers (not me!). I'm still looking for something for Saturday evenings. If anyone has some ideas, please let us know.

For those returning, we are not able to use the Fairborn Writers' Loft this year due to technical problems. Last year we had something scheduled every night and I felt it was just too much, so we left some evenings open this year. I or one of the Co-ML's will try to be at each of the events. I personallyl will be at the Sunday, Tues, and Thursday (Beavercreek) events.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

ROEs for Write-ins

Hello All,

I am just starting this thread to give people the ground rules for write-ins. Please feel free to add any that you think I miss.

- The most important - people are there to write! The primary rule is if someone has their headphones on and is feverishly typing, or staring longingly at their screen or paper, please do not bother them. When someone is in nano-mode it is very poor manners to interrupt their stream of consciousness! Most people take a break every 45min to an hour. Please wait until they look up and remove their headphones before talking with them.

- Please be considerate of people nearby writing. Having a loud philosophical debate while people are trying to write is very distracting. Not saying to not talk, just please be considerate.

- Remember that you are representing Nanowrimo in public. Please act responsibly.

- If you have an extra surge protector, bring it! An outlet with two plugs doesn't go very far when 5 people show up. I usually have two in my truck during nano.

- If we are meeting at a place of business, ie Panera, please purchase a drink or something. This makes it much easier to work with them in the future.

- Have fun!

I think that covers the major ones... please add to it if you feel I forgot something.

Did you make your 1667 words today?

I thought it would be neat to keep us on track. Post here with your thoughts. Did you make your goal/exceed/fall short? If you fell short what is your plan to make it up? I have found by experience that if you miss a day and don't plan when you are going to make it up, its a lot harder.

Books and Co write in - 23 Nov

Apparently they reserved the tables in front of the fireplace for another group. I'm set up on the dorothy lane side of the second floor, looking out on the Pub. I have two 4 top tables. If anyone drops in before heading over that's where I be!

Throwing my hat in... a little late :D

Well, I'm back. I wasn't going to do it this year. Nope. Had a completed dark fantasy novel to last-pass-edit this month. Nano? No way!

Well, I finished up a little early, so why not? With 10 days left (9.2ish, really), 50k is looking pretty distant, but I've done more with less, so it's not off the table. :D

Anybody else getting a late start this year?
Is this anyone else's 1st year?

I was just wondering if I'm the only one in the area that has never done this before? I had actually never even heard of it until a friend from FanStory told me about it and encouraged me to join. I'm hoping to make the write in tonight at the Greene, but honestly it just depends on if I can get all my kids settled into whatever they're doing for the night and make it out there by 6:00.. Is there somewhere special that the group meets? I always feel like a dork walking into a group for the first time; it's the lingering introvert that I haven't been able to stomp out of my personality.
Music for the masses

So out of curiosity, I was wondering for those of you who listen to music when you write, what kind of music inspires you to write?

For instance, I have multiple playlists on my mp3 player that allow me to listen to different things depending on what I am doing. If I am cleaning the house I listen to 90's alternative. If I am sleeping, I have a CD compilation of Yiddish and Hebrew love songs and lullabies or I bring out the new age music (Enya, Blackmore's Night, Loreena McKennitt, etc.). When I am working on my computer servers I listen to women's Indy music and folk music. If I am walking I listen to a mixture of everything. When I am writing I listen to Broadway musicals. Currently my musicals of choice are the soundtracks for Wicked and Aida. I have a playlist of all the tracks and then hit shuffle and repeat.

I have found that depending on the music I am listening to, it helps me to focus on the task at hand. I am severely ADHD on the high side of multitasking. I never could focus on one thing at a time. When I am working on computer stuff, I probably have my server up and remoted in, at least three different browsers up (for browser checks), my graphics program up for design work, multiple IMs, and my coding compilers up. I may have music going or I have the TV on in the background just for the background noise. I think if you make me focus on one thing I can't do it. Even now, I have my novel up, a browser, my coffee next to me a couple IMs and the forums all while still singing and humming to the Wicked soundtrack. Not to mention, I am already at my other job with laptop in tow, waiting for work to start (keep in mind I am three hours early for work!).

So what kind of music works for others when they are writing?

Michelle
TGIO PARTY

Hey gang,

It's almost here! I know that we're still working on word count, but I want to take a few to think about the TGIO party. I just reserved the clubhouse we used for the Kickoff for the 5th of Dec. This is the first Saturday after the 30th. Do we want to do another pot luck, or do we want to order pizza/delivery of some kind? This one will be more of a real party, so bring any games, writing or related that you want. I know several regulars have writing games and I have cards and domino types. Please let me know your thoughts.

Halfway Celebration

I noticed that a bunch of people are close to making the halfway point--25,000 words--and thought we should have a thread where people can come to celebrate when they finally make it over the hump. It's all downhill from here!!

Personally, I'm doing a happy dance, even though it's 4 am. LOL

It'd also be fun to hear what people are going to do in real life, if anything, to mark the occasion. I'm still trying to decide, myself. But I'm definitely going to do something to celebrate! Besides go to bed and finally get some sleep, that is. ;)
Words Worth write-in

Did anyone else try to go to the Words Worth write-in tonight, only to find it canceled again when they got there? Are there going to be write-ins on Monday nights at this location? If there aren't, can someone remove them from the calendar?

I know things come up unexpectedly sometimes, but this is the second time I've driven out there to find a sign on the door saying it'd been canceled. Between drive time and then having to find someplace else to write when that's not available, it wastes like an hour each time, and I need that time for writing. I did see that a post canceling last week's write-in had been put up a few hours before and I had missed it, since I went directly there from another appointment, but there wasn't any mention of tonight's write-in being canceled as well. I just need some clarification as to whether or not we are going to be meeting there on Monday nights.

Monday nights are the only weeknights I can do a write-in, so if this location isn't going to be available, maybe we could re-schedule somewhere else. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for any help you can give.
Halfway Party

Hello all,

I apologize in being so late in posting this. We never really decided on what to do for the halfway. Some ideas floated last weekend were meeting for lunch somewhere on Sunday in the Dayton Mall area and then heading to the Panera for writing. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi ,

I have Wednesday off and wanted to know if anyone will be writing at any of the public locations we have been going attending? I would love the company?

Centerville Library

Okay, we were talking about a group possibly meeting up at the Centerville Library sometime for a write-in. They do have community rooms there. I checked, and if the rooms aren't in use, patrons are welcome to use them. I don't know exactly how they're set up, or how many plugs they have, but they're good-sized rooms. There is free wifi at the library, and you can have refreshments in the community rooms, so long as you clean up before you leave. I know Centerville library has a good children's section, with computers and stuff for the kids to use, but don't know specifics about that.

If anyone's interested in meeting up there sometime to write, preferably during the day or possibly on a Thursday night, let me know. I don't live far from there.

Thanks!
New ML in 2010

All,

I'd like to take this chance to say that the last four years have been great, but being military it's time for me to move. So this will be my last year as ML of the Dayton area. I will be heading to Los Angeles in January. I'll send out something at the end of the month, but before the month gets going much more, I want to introduce you to the courageous volunteers for next year.

Mike will be stepping up as the primary ML. This is his third nano, and he has been active in multiple writing groups in the area. Dara will be stepping up to be his co-ML next year. I believe this is her second nano, but I could be wrong about that. I've had the honor of working with both of them over the last year in a local critiquing group. I know Mike is wanting to get some info out to those of us that are gluttons for punishment, and we figured we should go ahead and start transitioning some of the things this year. They are both functioning as co-ML's this year along with Tim, Emily, and Addie. So if you run into any of those folks, please shake their hand!

Anyways... like I said, I'll be sending out a farewell email at the end of the month. I hope that you will all support Mike, Dara and the gang next year as much as you have supported me the last four years!

Thanks! Enough break... back to writing...

11/9 Write-in

The Word's Worth thread said that they had to cancel tonight. I think I'm going to go to Panera at Fairfield Commons, but if anyone prefers the Dayton Mall location (or the one at the Green, but that doesn't have much space...), or some place completely different, I'd rather go somewhere with people (it gets kind of boring alone...).
Write-Ins at Word's Worth Writing Center

Thanks to those that have stopped in to add to their word count at Word's Worth Writing Center. Most folks that have stopped by have said that they've enjoyed the time and appreciate the space and snacks. Write-ins for this week (11/9--11/15) are Wednesday (11/11) from 6:30-9:00pm and Saturday (11/14) from 9am-12pm. I had originally scheduled a write-in for tonight (11/9), but have to cancel due to the clash between my work life and personal life, unfortunately tonight, duty calls. There are other open times throughout the month, so please consider stopping by and using the space if you're able.

The address is 3301 Far Hills Avenue--corner of Peach Orchard and Far Hills in Oakwood. The building is on the corner and the entrance is on the side (Peach Orchard). My phone is 475-5177.

Thanks and best of luck to all DANGers!
