How's everybody coming along?

Just thought I would start a new topic for everybody to kind of "touch base" as we close in on the end of the first week. While I have written other material, I have never even attempted to write a novel before. However, I'm finding it pretty easy so far to meet the 1,667 word goal. I've also discovered a few tricks that make it easier.

So, how are you all coming along? Anything you can share with us? Anything that we can do to help you? Talk to me.....
Six Days of Sacrifice, A Lifetime of Pride!

Ok everybody, we're in the home stretch!!! How many of you have fallen off the pace? I did because I took a weekend surf trip to Puerto Rico (yes, it was a blast!). I took a laptop with me and tried to write, but that didn't happen. So I fell behind. But look, we've come too far to stop now! I sat down and cranked out a little over 2,000 words tonight, so now I'm only 5,000 words behind the goal for the end of the day tomorrow.

I just wanted to encourage everybody that we're on a noble endeavor here. If you meet the goal, then in 6 days and FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, you'll be able to say "I wrote a novel!" Would you rather say "I started to write one, but never finished." And don't worry right now about whether it's good or bad. If it's good, you'll be rewarded later on down the road for your efforts. But even if it's bad, so what? Are you afraid that someone is going to read it and say "boy, that really sucks!" Even if someone does say that, all you have to do is ask them what they have written. When they say "nothing," then you can just tell them to come back when they have written one themselves. You see, the easiest thing in this world to be is a critic. It's much harder, and much more noble, to be an advocate. That's what we are - we're advocating the story that we want tell. So I ask you, which is the more noble endeavor - to be on the playing field trying, sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing, or to be sitting in the stands doing nothing but throwing tomatoes?

Remember why you started down this road 24 days ago. You can't quit now! "But I'm tired!" So what? I am too. Do it anyways!

Six days of sacrifice in exchange for a lifetime of pride!

I hope this helps motivate those of us who need it! Now stop reading this and get back to writing!!!! (hahahahh)
Introductions?

Hey everyone!

... um, wherever everyone is.

Anyways, I just figured we should have a place to introduce ourselves.

I'm Betsy. I'm a homeschooled, dual-enrolled 16-year-old (practically 17) junior in high school. I write fantasy generally, though this year's is catalogued under Literary Fiction because a lot of it is going to be me being either nostalgic or pretentious about language and religion and philosophy. And magic. There is always magic. :D

What about you?
Got a Question for Ya!

I have taken on a new venture lately, a Blog Talk Radio show about writing. Well, two, actually. The first Monday each month, I talk to writers of young adult and childrens books. On the 4th Wednesay of each month, I talk to authors about writing - all aspects from the creating process to getting published.

In November, I am doing a show devoted to NaNoWriMo. I have 2 guests, maybe 3 - but I would like a couple more. One guest has done NaNo for several years. The other is new this year. Would any of you be interested in participating? Please let me know. Thanks.

If you don't know what Blog Talk Radio is, it's a website that broadcasts "radio" shows via computer. The host & guests call in on a phone number which broadcasts the call on computer. Therefore, no need to be at your computer to participate.

I find really interesting to meet new people, especially writers, but I can never figure out when people are going to be where. Because I keep thinking that some people are others and the only one I really have figured out is Bruce because his name is in his username.

And I like to be able to attach faces to all these comments.

Tips and Tricks

Boy, I REALLY didn't feel like writing today! Even though we're only doing a few pages a day, doing it day after day after day after........can start to be a grind. However, I have discovered a cool little trick that has really helped me out - particularly tonight.

On my iPod, I have a playlist of specific music that I listen to when I write (before you ask, it's "new age" music). The trick is twofold - first, I listen to this music (in shuffle mode so it doesn't start becoming an "hour glass") every time I write, without exception. Second, and more importantly, I ONLY listen to this music when I write. As soon as I finish, I turn it off until the next session.

This really helped me tonight because after I summoned up the motivation to get off the couch and get to the computer (which was a monumental task in and of itself), I turned on my "writing music" and started pounding out something. For about the first 10 minutes, I was moving just a little bit faster than a snail, but before you know it, I had laid down roughly 1,800 words in about 50 minutes.

Does anyone else have any cool little tricks?
----------

Challenge Words!

Hello, all!

I would like to propose a list of challenge words. We did this last year and I found it a lot of fun, plus it gave me interesting rambling opportunities. It works like so: Each person submits a word/phrase/idea that everyone (who wishes to) attempts to include in their novel.

My challenge word: Saber-toothed tigers :)
What programs do you all use for writing?

I am sooo new to this, and I was curious about what the 'good' writing software is..!

I would normally use MS Word, but I'm sure there are other programs out there that may be more beneficial to the writing process! I also want to use Google Documents, so that I can access my writing from anywhere I happen to be. SOOO... I thought I would ask the 'wise ones' out there for some advice. =)

Thank you guys!!

I tried to check to see who in the Daytona area is writing but when I click on the 216 affiliates, I'm told I have no access to that. How come?

UN-official Write-Ins (as in Mods may or may not be present ;-)

Hey-

Thought I'd get this thread fired up- if you are planning to write somewhere public at a particular time anywhere in Daytona Beach Area (Deland, Port Orange, Palm Coast, ect.) and want company, post it here and see who shows up. It's hit or miss, and sometimes surprising!

I'll be at the Barnes and Noble on ISB (International Speedway Blvd- across from the Speedway) in Daytona Beach on WEDNESDAY Nov 4 from 12 PM to 2:15 PM :-)
What's in your stuffing?

I am curious what all of you are writing about. Want to share some stuff?

My own story is about Sam who is 42 and just found out he was adopted. So far I have written 5000 words on how he misses his parents that just passed away in cancer, both within a short while. And now he is at their house, his childhood home, cleaning up, grieving, and boxing things up to put it on the market. He finds a shoe box with a photo of a young pregnant woman. She looks like a young female version of himself. He is terrified, confused, angry and curious (I will have to "show" not "tell" in Dec. during re-write ;-) !!.

Later he will want to find her.

His biological mom is Stella. She will not want to open up to her "new" son. And she will not want to help him find his biological father.
First two days...

Saturday: I panicked. What the heck was I going to write about? My brain drew a complete blank. After a few short breathing exercises, to calm myself down, I picked up a notepad and a pen and locked myself in the bedroom. In there, laying on my bed, I was able to come up with a little idea for a story. It's difficult to say where it came from exactly, but who cares, I had something to write about which was the only thing that mattered.

Sunday: My fingers were flying on the keyboard. I couldn't type fast enough. Perfect words just poured out of my head. I easily finished 1667 words.

Monday: Not so good. I drew another blank. My anxiety returned and my fingers felt doughy and tired. They didn't want to type. Yuck! I couldn't think of how to flesh out my idea. So I began writing in my notepad again. Drew a picture, a map, of the neighborhood where my main character lived. Then I created neighbors. Went back on the computer and began writing down descriptions and back story. After two hours, I still had only completed 900 words. So, for thirty minutes (it was all the time I had left) I wrote like a mad person, just to complete 1667. I wrote down whatever came out of my head: a scene where my MC met with two of the neighbors I had created earlier. Just to try them out.

Is this normal? Is this what you do?
This is new

WOW!
I cannot believe I am going for this goal, but why not challenge myself. My English teacher had announced this contest to the class and I became infatuated with the though of writing 50,000 words. It seems impossible to me although I have a huge adventurous story bottled up in me and needs to be told.

My mom is being very supportive of this idea. This summer my stepdad, mom, and I took a wild trip to Brazil. After being locked up in the United States for 10 years it was time to go back home. The two months of fun brought me unforgettable memories on a rocking roller coaster. Just wait and read, nothing is made up, it's reality.

During the trip I met family, friends, and holes. I wanted to write a journal while I was there but my schedule was filled. I had to enjoy every minute and couldn't spend the time to sit and write. Now this wonderful opportunity has come across me. I am 15 years old and I am going to write my first novel.

Kickoff Party

Yes, there WILL be a kickoff party! **dons party hat, even tho there's no emoticon for that**

It will be at Panera on U.S. 92 again this year, on Friday night, the 30th of this month (that's

October, for those of you that have been sequestered in a dark room for weeks, fearing the onset of NaNoWriMo.)

Will you join us? We'll be in the rear of the place, as usual, so as not to startle the "normal people" and plan to begin around 6:30. We'll socialize, lament our lack of ideas or maybe brag about previous wins, and generally keep it very friendly. We just want to meet up with old friends and new, get your names on a list of sorts, and get geared up for the madness to begin two days later. Write-ins will be decided upon at that time, if not before.

Okay, ONE MORE TIME:

Panera Breads on U.S. 92 (International Speedway Blvd)
Friday, October 30th
6:30 - ???
Bring your 'game face' (and your laptops, if you wish) and plan to have a good time.

See you there!

~Bruce
