United States :: California :: East Bay

Read your work on the radio!

If the pride and joy of winning nanowrimo isn't enough motivation to cross 50k (though frankly, I can't imagine that it isn't), how does this sound? If you write 50k or more, you have the opportunity to read an excerpt of your novel on the radio!

Ann Arbor has a radio program on KFJC called Dancin' In The Fast Lane that is broadcast on Wednesday mornings (http://www.kfjc.org/programming/program_info.php?houroftheweek=54&info_i...). During one of the segments on that show, Unbedtime Stories, she reads excerpts from books. For the last few years, she has offered that reading slot to nano participants who have successfully crossed the 50k line.

So, if you want to read part of your glorious novel on the radio, cross that finish line and contact Ann Arbor! Her email is AArborKFJC@aol.com.
I need a real count for the East Bay Launch Pary in El Cerrito

Hello All,

If you are planning to attend the El Cerrito East Bay Launch Event, please write me at :wholygirl@gmail.com ASAP.
This party actually involves food (and expense). Given what I'd heard from other ML's around the world - I didn't expect the negativity I've received at suggesting one launch party.

In other states and countries people are driving long distances to create a group event. It's clear that the people in the East Bay aren't willing to to that - more's the pity.

One of the reasons that I suggest the venues I select is that they are independent women-owned business ventures. In the case ot the Central Perk it's one of the most unique places that I've ever seen. It'd decor is chock full of imagination - and the result of creative minds.

Also, because of the decor - it is an optimum photo-op moment. My dream was to create a big splash (in the region where NaNoWriMo began and is run from) so that the press would have something to photograph - and possibly make something more than the national news. If we don't have a big mass of people - this won't happen. Obviously the more press the org gets, the more people become involved - and donate.

Yes, this event is for writers everywhere to write. Yet is is also to promote literacy, free thinking and creativity to young people all over the globe. NaNoWriMo uses its funds to do AWESOME things such as build libraries, reach inner-city and rural kids all over the world and enroll them into an event where their participation can actually change their lives.

I feel this cause is critical to the world. I think Chris is frigging brilliant to have created it.

I believe that it's a cause to support - that's why I've approached this in the way that I have.

----------

On a personal note, last week I received the news that my father is critically ill. This is one of the main reasons that I cannot be the ML this year - although I was planning to, and looking forward to it. I need to be on call to fly to Southern California.

Still, until we have another ML - I'm all you've got for now. So I chose venues sort-of near my home so that I could work with the owners easily and fulfill my commitments to them.

----------

That said - if there seem to be enough people who want to make this event work - Great. If not - fine too. I'd just like to know so that I can plan my time accordingly. I like big events - but lots of small ones are fine too - they just don't receive much press.

So that's my thoughts on the matter. You can call me at (510) 559-8773 if you want to chat in person.

I wish you a wonderful novel-writing season.

Melissa
If you've ever participated in Nano - whether you've reached 50,000 words or not - you are welcome to join us whenever you can. Just look for the lime-green NaNo Write-In cards on the table!

This event is casual - drop in whenever you'd like, leave when you need to. No pressure. No problem.
Do post these times and dates in your date book as this is the only e-mail that you will receive regarding this particular write-in or just remember 1st THURSDAYS.

Our agenda for these events is simple: to share some of our writing with each other and (if requested) receive feedback, have some 30 minute speed writing contests, and enjoy each other's company.

Regarding Kat's and my participation in this Central Perk event-
Kat and I will be participating in the Central Perk group because we live near by, have a vested interest in getting our novels finished, we enjoy working in groups, and this is the group that we participated in during the 2007 NaNo. We are not sponsoring this as ML's but as humble writers and NaNo participants - just like you!

So perhaps we'll see you at the Perk. You'll have 10 chances to do so before the 2008 NaNoWriMo begins again!

Danville and San Ramon Valley

Hey, new to NaNoWriMo this year for 2008 and wondering if there were any Danville-rs or anyone from the SRV around. I'd be interesting if I could find someone I know, but otherwise I'm always up for meeting new people. Currently I'm at Uni in England, but I'm back for the very long summer until October, so I'll be able to meet people at events and things I suppose. Speaking of which, how do those work? Any tips anyone has? What exactly happens these first few months of the new year?

Well, nice to meet you all (if anyone actually replies to this),

Collaborative Story from TGIO Party

Thanks to everyone who came to the Pan-Bay TGIO. While you were all partying, some people worked together to create a great collaborative story, one sentence as a time. We've typed it up and are posting it here -- read it for a good laugh!

Once upon a time, there was a pair of talking scissors. Their names were Cut and Snap. One day, Cut decided he needed more spork to his life. So Snap hooked him up to a generator. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" Cut asked.

"Less talk, more juice!" said Snap.

At just that moment, a parade of insomniac clowns burst through the door, demanding a sniff and he said, "And by the way, less cowbell also."

"I'm sorry, the cowbell was an accident," said Snap.

"Hello--trying to get some spark, can we hurry this up?" asked Cut from his position, which was prostrate on a fold-out table.

Just then, the Sears opened, and the Store Manager discovered the scissors attached to the generator.

But Cut said: "I said I wanted spork in my life."

"In that case we must go to KFC, not Sears, where the spork comes with the moist towelette."

"By to get a spork from KFC, we'd have to go through Colonel Sanders, and his checken powers are tremendous," said Snap.

"Let's not go," Cut pleaded, "I really don't want to go near any towelette." Little did they know, the feral sporks of KFC caused Snap to snap; Cut got a new friend--Run.

"Excuse me," said one of the insomniac clowns, "but I'm still waiting on the cowbell thing here."

	"More cowbell?" asked the priest.

"No, less cowbell, damn it!" said the now insane Snap. Suddenly Snap got a grand idea. "What we need is some color to brighten things up," she smiled. "Purple would do just fine."

Cut heaved an enormous sigh of relief -- "No more rental white! No more, we're free!"

"Only so long as they don't go hysterical like the last one we cut up," Snap stated mournfully.

Run got jealous and started after Snap, wielding the spork dangerously.

"Wait a minute," Cut interrupted, "that doesn't work. He's not supposed to get the spork 'til part three."

So saying, cut dropped a forearm sliver into Run, sending the spork flying through the air, along with Run's forearm, splattering the room with bright red blood, breaking up the dreaded rental white of the walls.

"Thank goodness!" Cut exclaimed. "You know red is my favorite color!"

"But the blood throws off the Feng Shui of the room," Snap concluded, a convenient tourniquet ceasing the bloodflow. Just then, Evanescence popped up and Amy Lee claimed copyright. Followed by the band that originally wrote the song, which resulted in a very entertaining episode of Jerry Springer.

When out of the blue, Rock appeared and growled menacingly, "What have you done with Paper?"

Paper was hiding behind the door, which meant, of course, that three of the traditional five Feng Shui elements (earth, metal, and wood) were represented, leaving only the priest, who was, in fact, more of a vicar, skulking in the corner, upset that he had been ignored. Fortunately, the priest believed in recycling, so he grabbed Paper and, with a few folds, designed a new airplane! Four paper cuts later, he realized that he had discovered a new and utterly unexpected principle of aerodynamics--namely, that if you can dream it, you can do it. Unless you've ingested too many steroids and your arm explodes.

At which the Rock said menacingly, "Are you implying that I took too many steroids?"

"Vat ees these--eempleecayshun?" was the reply. But the conversation was interrupted by the sound of Chris Baty's laptop crying to itself in a corner.

Rock, Paper, and the scissors turned to it and said, "Don't worry, there are support groups for that, but you should probably brush your teeth before we head out.

Snap and Cut could not agree on how they would dispose of the body, but they knew that something would have to be done. They grabbed a rake, a shovel, and other implements of destruction. Suddenly, a helicopter appeared overhead and dropped a large object on their heads. It was a piano. Though just like in the cartoons, Cut and Snap popped back into 3D, A.O.K.

Suddenly, a disenchanted stripper ambled by, dragging a feather boa and a broken G-string. "Damn it," she mumbled, tripping on the broken piano.

It was at that moment that a door opened above the piano and a cube, with hearts on each side, fell onto it while a woman's voice explained that this weighed campaign cube will never threaten to stab the stripper in the back and, in fact, cannot speak," which the stripper found to be quite odd, but she was also quite drunk. Which went a long way towards explaining why she had woken up married to an Elvis impersonator, with "I love Bill Gates" tattooed on her butt…and she didn't know a darned thing about computers, and therefore had never played Portal--just the occasional game of DDR--and thus was quite chagrined when the DDR game was loaded.

It changed her life. She'd been a stripper but never really danced. Sure, she'd gone through the motions that the production coach screamed, but she'd never felt the music like she had when DDR came on, saying, "This is a fun dance party. She was hooked. And she was liberated. Life was good.

Just then, Tavia entered and exclaimed, "Enough! NaNo has ended. Please go home and sober up! If you survive there might be another year…"

…and in conclusion, they put in more cowbell.
Keep In Touch

Consider this the official shout-out thread.

Possibly there aren't very many of you reading the forums anymore, but for the die-hards who want to keep the ball rolling or who are just reluctant to let go of fun new acquaintances, this thread is for you. Place your shout out here, be it info, writer's groups, mailing lists, or just a request to know whats going on out there in the real world. I know we all have busy lives outside NaNo, but there's no reason we can't at least remain talking. :)

Keep in mind, the forums will be around at least another month, and we will also still hold the Central Perk meetings through December.

We may hold them longer as well, not as a writer's group, but simply as a sort of support system. It does seem a lot easier to write when others around you are doing so as well, especially when you're stuck or feel like procrastinating. If you are interested in this, let wholeygirl or myself know by PM or email, or just show up on Thursday and tell us in person.

Also, let us know what you're area is doing to try to keep the muse alive. Remember, there is never a "good time" to write, you must make time, and that's a lot easier to do when you have a support system backing you up.

Happy holidays everyone, and thanks for a great year!

Thing I learned during my first NaNoWriMo

Hi Everyone,

Well this is my first year doing NaNoWriMo and I have to say I had a blast doing it. I managed to hit the 50K+ mark with my novel and plan on finishing the book (I just don't feel like it's complete yet). That being said I thought I'd share with you some things I learned doing this.

First some background on my novel or you might not get my list here. My book is about a Serial Killer in San Diego. His first victim was killed accidentally but he got all hot and bothered when she died and then started to intentionally kill people. He'd pick them up in bars, get them in bed and then kill them by making it look like a suicide....yes I need help, and if any of you know a great psychologist please forward me their number as I now know I have issues and need to get them dealt with...LOL.

Anyways, 5 things I learned during NaNoWriMo 2007.

1- I have a VERY vivid imagination, or I am psychotic and need therapy and just don't know it.

2- There is no good way to describe the human sex organs, and when you're trying to write a love scene (or twenty, cause my killer is a sexual deviant) there are only so many ways you can say words like Penis, Vagina, penetration, the act of having sex etc. Those of you that read this will probably fill my inbox with variations I'm sure, but remember anything you send me, I've probably already used because of my vivid imagination. And No, I'm will not put in my book that they "Did the Horizontal Hula" okay!

3- Making yourself write everyday sucks, but at the same time is rewarding. There have been a few days over since November 10th when I started this that I've said "I'm not writing today, I don't feel like it" and you know what happened? I ended up writing 5000+ words on those days because like a dumbass I watched some Biography channel and some bio about a serial killer inspired me to write something in my book about my guy and how his dog pissed on his leg when he was a kid so he killed the dog with a spork (Just kidding, he didn't kill a dog...no dogs were harmed in the writing of my book).

4- DO NOT expect to have any meaningful conversations with your signifigant other during NaNoWriMo either. It's impossible, EVERYTHING turns into a conversation about the book. They'll ask you if you took out the trash and you're answer will be something like "Well, I had him clean the room after he killed her and stuffed her body into the clothes hamper honey, isn't that good enough?"

5- YOU WILL DREAM ABOUT YOUR BOOK. I kid you not. I dreamt quite a few of the things my serial killer/Sexual Psycho ends up doing in the book.

So that's what I've learned...exciting No? Yeah I know it's not, but humor me.

----------

Tully's wasn't quite cutting it, so here is ye new official location:

Location: Borders Pleasanton
4575 Rosewood Drive
Pleasanton, CA 94588

Day: every Wednesday
Time: 5:30 PST until whenever

The Pleasanton Borders is on the Pleasanton side of Highway 580. Take the Hacienda exit, and make a right onto Hacienda. Follow Hacienda to the next light and make a left onto Owens. At the first light you encounter on Owens, past the WalMart and Red Robin, make a left (not sure the street) and pass the first light on that street. You'll soon see a turnoff into the Borders lot, and you'll have arrived at the lovely (or something) destination.
Hayward Weekly November Write-in at Panera

The general consensus seems to be that Friday nights are good for the November weekly write-ins. So, accordingly, I proudly (or something) announce that the Hayward write-ins will be:

Time and date: every Friday night in November, beginning at 6:30PM
Location: Panera Bread
24133 Southland Drive
Hayward, CA 94545

It's right by Southland Mall. If you need directions, I'll attempt to give them to you, but I can't guarantee they'll be as good as what you find on Google or Yahoo! Maps.

----------

EBayNaNo: Keep the Conversation going: CREATED: NEW YAHOO WRITERS GROUP

Hi, all

I have very much enjoyed interacting with the EBay Region writers this year, and as I was NOT looking forward to that going away, I have created an EBay group on Yahoo. It is called EBayNaNo. Here is the link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EBayNaNo

Please feel free to join up if you are intrested in keeping the conversation alive. Any NaNo is welcome, but I am only publishing word of this to our regional group.

Keep writing!

Final Week, Central Perk, and You

We are in the final countdown, and everyone is worried about the home stretch. Both last night an on the forums today I have found people asking about where write-ins are so they can make their final push towards that magical purple bar.

Though the official write-in is on Thursday, there is a very good chance someone will be at Central Perk every day this week. I will certainly be there again this afternoon after 5 pm, and while I hope to push myself past the finish line, realistically I may be there tomorrow afternoon as well. If I am not, others have mentioned they may be.

So, to recap:

* Officially the write-in this week will be Thurs as usual.
* Unofficially this entire week will be a write-in.

If you are behind, show up, plug in, and wait. Chances are someone will appear very shortly to keep you company.

Anyone who wishes to join me this afternoon, I will be there as soon as I finish fighting rush hour traffic, drain the dog, and go through the laborious process of transferring that day's writing from my computer to my laptop. 5-5:30ish look for me.

(And I am done. This is impossible to post half awake and between phone calls at work, so if its a wee bit repetitive, sorry. I am too sleepy for words. :P)
----------

Final Week Write-Ins

There is a separate post concerning Central Perk, however, I know not everyone can make it to El Cerrito. So as we push into the final week and people begin to feel that last gasp of word-count-panic, we need to know, where will you be?

Official write-ins are as usual, nothing has changed unless otherwise posted. However, feel free to post here any impromptu write-ins you might be holding or simply a shout-out to find out how many other people might be willing to join you if you just feel the urge to get out of the house and into the nearest WiFi cafe.

Good luck everyone!
