We have officially declared regional war on both Japan and Alaska. Judging will be based on average words per person, and you can check this widget for our current status.

This is a stickied post, so you can always get to it and post to it! We want to encourage as many of you as would like to host your own events, especially in the far reaches of our Island chain!! Don't be shy, discuss some ideas and if you need any help organising, getting flyers, contacting people, etc, don't hesitate to ask your (hopefully) friendly ML's! ^_~

Any write-ins that are posted that we don't have on the calendar already, we would be pleased to put up for you!!! Just give us a day or so after you've posted your plans for it and we can put it up for you!

Really looking forward to another crazy year!

[Sticky!] Introduce yourself here!

This thread is where we can all introduce ourselves! I'll start...

Hey! I'm Jon[athon], one of your Hawai'i co-MLs, and have been doing this since the year before last and was one of the MLs from last year. I am fortunate enough to have married the other co-ML over the summer, and graduated in the spring as well! I'm really looking forward to getting to know each of you, and seeing what awesome stories you come up with. I'll see everyone on Saturday, and let's get this ball rolling.
So Close, yet so far

Things that went wrong just 5 to 15 minutes before midnight:
1) My iPod Shuffle battery ran out of power
2) my word count was at 49,241 and in a moment of desperation I had Word 2006 generate a table of contents and that boosted the word count to 50,162
3) And by accident I wasn't able to submit the novel to the win verification section
4) And besides not finishing the novel, I didn't start on the section that was supposed to be this year novel.

And...It's Done!

Well, okay, not done done, but I reached the goal! Yay! This is the first time in all the years I've participated that I've reached the 50,000 words! *Whew!*
That was some journey. I started late, had to write in class while my teachers were talking, had to deal with all of the school and work stuff, and had to deal with "constructive" criticism from friends. But I reached my goal The last 10,000 words or so was nothing compared to the middle section when I had no idea whether or not I was going to be able to finish.
The story is far from done, though. But I'm going to take a break and go back to the beginning and proofread and edit a little. There are currently no chapters, no real sense of "novel" form and it leaves a lot to be desired. So I'm going to do a little fixing up and see what I can do with it.

I'd really like to thank everyone who messaged me with words of encouragement. And everyone who's posted in these forums and shared experiences with me because I knew that I was going through a lot of the same things and it helped to know that I wasn't alone.
I'd also like to thank my parents and my friends who didn't get mad or irritated at me when I was writing on my laptop instead of paying attention to much of what they were saying these past few days. And also the Jpop group Arashi for their background music and being the inspiration for much of what happened.

Anyone else want to celebrate their reaching the 50,000 words? I'd like to hear your thank yous too!

Just Cruise ‘n

It’s a cruise- all down hill for me now! I can see the finish line and am grateful to the pep talk emails and comments from various strands that helped me through this exercise. I spent the weekend caching up and getting on track and was glad for the time spent. I took the assignment as meeting a publisher’s deadline and that moved me. I am very grateful to have taken part in this exercise. Best of luck to all of us.
10K Weekend Baby!

W007! Who rocks? That'd appear to be me who rocks! But of course my prescription's a few years old, and it's kind of hazy out, so it might just be someone who looks unsettlingly like me in the distance who rocks, or maybe I accidentally saw a person who gave the possible appearance of rocking in a reflection within a storefront window.

More investigation will have to be done into the true nature of this possible rocking. A team is on standby to begin the necessary testing into whether or not someone or some thing was indeed rocking, and whether or not the aforementioned individual or object that was doing said rocking, was, in fact, me.

West Side Big Island Write-in

Who's up for a write-in this Saturday in Kona? I checked with Borders Books and they'd be more than happy to have us there, laptop in hand. I'm thinking we could meet around 9:30 or 10am, since I believe someone said only mornings would work for them.

I Do need to know ASAP who is going to be coming. West Hawaii Today is doing an article on Westside Nanoers and want to send a photographer there to take our picture (this is great marketing for those of us who already have books published). But, it won't pay for them to come if no one shows up. I have to call them with a time and location as soon as we set it up so they can get their photographer out there.
just wondering....

if anyone's still laboring under the idea that you should EDIT?

my friend in minnesota is... she's frustrated over her word count and yet won't remember that she's supposed to send that inner editor on vacation...

some ideas if you're stuck on edit..

1) don't erase... highlight... put a color on it... or change the color and then continue on...

2) lose the muse? going in a direction and can't figure out where? but in a blurb (continue here) color that and then move on to another part of the story..

3) jump into a word war... during a recent word war one of the writers came to a 'lightbulb' moment where their plot problem ironed itself out while she was writing... WRITING...

4) have a plot hitch... talk it out with someone... or go for a walk and clear your mind...

so.... GO... WRITE :)

----------

Other UHH Students/Hilo NaNoers?

Any other UH Hilo students (or general Hilo area people) doing NaNo? I usually put up some fliers around campus, but this year I don't have a printer and am too broke to spend the seven cents a page at the library to print some off. So if somebody else wants to spread the word instead...

I really hope we can get together and have a bigger write-in than last year (there were four of us)!
Dares

This thread is for dares! We've already had a few in-person dares that have been taken, and now we can make more on this thread.

Zanni's dare was to write a paragraph with 26 sentences, each of which begins with the next letter of the alphabet. I took this dare! Here is my paragraph if anyone wants to read it.

"Although the person she had intended to speak with was not there, the woman was not to be deterred. By now he was already tired of hearing the question, "Where were you last night during the blackout?" Curiosity shone in her eyes as she spoke. Despite his mild annoyance with the topic, he answered her. "Everyone is talking about it, and wondering what went wrong," she confided in him. "Few people have heard any reliable information though." Gossip had clearly been repeated all over the city between last night and this morning. "Have you heard about poor Xora? I spoke with her only this morning. Just as the power went out she was riding the lift in her building. Kept on repeating how scared she was when the lift just stopped and the lights went out. Lifts are a terrible place to get stuck in, wouldn't you say? Myself, I was safe at home when it happened. Now Xora, she was in the lift. Only she couldn't get out and had no way to get help, though she called out. Poor thing. Quite likely she thought she would be trapped forever! Really, I don't know how she managed not to go into hysterics. So anyway, she waited in the dark alone until the power came back on." The woman looked at him eagerly to see the effect her story was having on him. Unimpressed, Neruel attempted to look adequately shocked. "Very frightening, isn't it? Wouldn't you have been scared? Xora said she plans to take the stairs from now on. You know, I think she might be right." Zealously she vowed never to take a lift again."

My next dare... is... go to Wikipedia and click on Random Article. Now somehow incorporate what you get into your novel!

if you haven't come to one yet... why not??

it's time to meet with other wrimos and cheer each other on...and get help when you're stuck.... and if you need a twist to throw into your story to get it moving again...

we have the sacred bowl of ideas :)

am I serious? Seriously crazy about NANO... so, don't shut down that computer... crank it up and your word count with a fun and productive couple of hours...

What's on your iPod?

I've noticed from going to the write-ins that nearly everyone brings their ipods or other musical devices. What are you listening to? Post your playlists or band names or whatever you have on right now and let the world see where the madness comes from!

My story is rife with Celtic themes, so today I have been listening to the Peatbog Faeries. They're like this techno-meets-ska-meets-celtic-meets-classical-meets-anything else powerhouse of noise. Also been listening to a lot of Salsa Celtica, which is a Scottish band that, as you can tell, plays salsa music with their traditional Celtic instruments. Lots of fun. If you want a sampling of them, watch the movie Driving Lessons, with Rupert Grint (of Harry Potter fame). They're in it all over the place :)

How about you?
Westside Hawaiians

Don't forget that we're meeting up again at the Kona Borders on Saturday. We'll try 9:30 again, that seemed to work well last time...unless someone needs it changed?

Of course, it's not restricted to westsiders. If someone has the irresistable urge to come to the Big Island and write, come on down, the more the merrier. And, if someone has an idea of what I should do since I'm at 39K and just typed The End, I really really want you to come. I need help. WAAH!

Hi! So if there are any other Punahou students, please, please, please email me. If there are enough people who contact me, we can sabotage a classroom and have a mini Punahou students only write in, or we could take over the science center tables. So let me know, please.

I hit 21,000 today... ug... and managed to finally get to the launch point. HOPEFULLY it's going to be a bit easier now that the characters are all actually aware of each other.

Finally!

After thinking about my story for the last, oh 13 days, I have finally figured it out. I practically have the whole plot written, but I was missing the most important element..... who is telling the story? I wrote about two pages from "her" (my main girl character) point of view, before I realized that she isn't even in half of the story. That's where I got stuck. Then Jack (my main character), started telling his story to me & I realized that it is HIS story. Finally, I have it together. Haha. I kept going, "Gah, 13 days have passed & I haven't even started?!?" Hopefully the rest will come as easily. :)
