The TGIO is a great time to relax and socialize. We will also be talking about updating and renewing the Pledge, our year-round writing group, for 2009. Those of you who have Lulu or CreateSpace printed copies of your past books, please bring those by to show everyone.

[STICKY] We Challenge You ! (french style)

Bonjour Naperwrimos,

We want to challenge you. We want to win against you and a have you sing us a little song. In French. Because there isn't anything as funny as American speaking French. Except maybe French trying to speak English.

So the region with the highest average word count is the winner. Europe::France VS Illinois::Naperville, Naperwrimo vs French Wrimos. The ultimate face off (....until next year).

It's going to be a walk in the park for us.

The charts are at your ML website : http://graphing.teiru.net/2008/wordwar/ and it's not because you're leading right now that it's going to stay that way.

I can't wait to hear you sing for us. ;)

[STICKY] Introduce yourself!

Hi!
Welcome back, all returning NaperWriMo's, and welcome all newcomers to our region! Please be sure that you have set us as your home region.

I'm Tim, aka NewMexicoKid, one of the volunteer Municipal Liaisons for our region of Illinois::Naperville. This is my sixth NaNo (and I've been fortunate to be successful every year) and my fourth year as a co-ML of the region. Illinois::Naperville is a fairly storied region, having been involved in three exciting inter-region word wars with Canadian regions.

My five NaNo novels were:

Twilight, the adventures of Giovanna Lee, who tries to come home after finding herself lost amidst the worlds of Twilight

A Return to Twilight

Twilight III: Giovanna Lee and the Crime Syndicate - Giovanna finds herself in a strange, parallel world where she is a supervillain

Giants of the Deep (a SF novel about interdimensional whales)

Mageborn (a fantasy novel about a secretive people with magic powers and conflicts hidden within our world)

As you can see, I love SF and Fantasy.

In real life, I'm a software engineer at Alcatel-Lucent.

[STICKY] Welcome to Illinois::Naperville's NaNoWriMo 2008!

Welcome to Illinois::Naperville, where we are typin' away. As the old song says:

Typin' away again near dear ol' Naperville
Searchin' for that lost chapter of plot...

Representing the western suburbs of Chicago, we are a storied region, defeating Ontario::Toronto, Quebec::Montreal and Ontario::Ottawa in 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively, and we have terrific partnerships with the Naperville Public Library and with Barnes and Noble. Last year we introduced the Pledge to Publish that goes beyond the November madness of NaNoWriMo to help people prepare to submit their work to publishers and agents. We have many events planned for 2008.

Your co-Municipal Liaisons are:

The Pledge: the year-round writing group

The Pledge is back. Originally conceived as the Pledge To Publish, it is now just the Pledge. It is our region's year-round writing group. Ground rules (such few as exist) are set up by the participants of that year. I anticipate that we will encourage people to write down their writing goals, whatever they may be; and we will try to help each other achieve these while

socializing (hey, we all have writing as a common interest)

doing some writing exercises (to help us grow as writers)

sharing information (e.g., experiences with query letters, agents and publishing houses)

and maybe even writing some short stories (would be cool to publish these just so we could each have a copy)

some reciprocal critiquing (though it is recommended to use critique circle for primary critiquing)

What do you think? What ideas do you have for the Pledge? Are you interested in participating? In previous years we have had a balance between remote jabber meetings and live outings. What do you think would work for you?

We will be discussing the Pledge at the TGIO; and we will likely schedule some online jabber meetings for the remote participants.

It's December--so now what? Feel free to reply with the things you intend to catch up on, now that November is over. (The more amusing, or impractical, the better.)

Number One--congratulate yourself and everyone you see who wrote any words during November. Woo hoo! Go you!

Number Two -- sign up for our TGIO party and consider joining the Pledge--a year-round writer's group. We need your input now as we try to set up meeting times and logistics. (Links in other postings on this page.)

If you finished your first draft, all the experts recommend setting it aside for at least two weeks. (However, I think I'll spellcheck mine before I do, and maybe just a little...)
If you haven't finished your first draft, and your fingers still move, by all means keep going. Try to get that first draft finished before you take a significant break, you'll be very glad you did later.

Be sure to check out the http://www.nanowrimo.org/ site after noon Pacific on 12/1. It will have links for the "I Wrote a Novel, Now What?" page.

Finished!

Has anyone else finished the novel? I managed to tie up the entire at exactly 50,000 words- counting the title, author, entire novel, author info, and, of course, "The End".

Of course, I should probably start work on another novel tomorrow seeing as it's only the fourteenth and we want to win against France. But for tonight at least, I'm done!

How are other people doing?
Last Hurrah ("Hurrah!")

(crossposted in Shoutouts)

There it is.
Five years, five wins.
My last NaNo.

It's been fun and interesting and all that. In the early years, I used NaNo as a way to clear out the attic - to finally got those old story ideas written that were moldering in my brain. It was a way to explore the viability of an idea, or at least write the heck out of it until I had taken it as far as I could (and sometimes farther). Some ideas were only potentially any good, and required a lot of research or revision to be salvageable. Others turned out to be downright awful, sometimes dated, and with unlikeable main characters or dull, meandering plots, and were rightfully condemned to the back of the farthest reaches of the file cabinet.

Then later came the new-and-intriguing ideas that were fresh, without the musty dustiness of sitting on the metaphorical shelf. These required more thinking through than a NaNo timeline allows (or there's too many stalled spots). Writing the scenes was easy. Thinking them up at all with a word count looming over your head - now that part was hard.

After 5 years, the whole "Can I do this thing" is resolved for me. I can. I've done it while unemployed and looking for work, while working full time, while working full time with a 4-hour round-trip commute. I've finished despite a death in the family, despite adopting a new puppy, despite accidentally deleting a whole chapter here and there, and despite losing a day and a half of writing as an election judge when NaNo happened to be in an election year.

Now I want to savor the process. I want the luxury of building an outline, of crafting a cause-and-effect plot, of polishing scenes until they're downright shiny, of having a meaningful relationship with my characters rather the speed-dating that is NaNo.

So it's with this in mind, I say thanks to my MLs, to those with encouragement to spare, and to those that make NaNo possible. Good luck next year!
Last two write-ins: Saturday and Sunday!

We're getting close to the finish line. Just a reminder that we have two more write-ins scheduled:

Saturday, 1-4 pm, Warrenville City Hall

Sunday, 1-4 pm, 95th Street Library

And, in preparation for next year (because we have to do some of our room reservations nearly a year in advance), if you could let us know:

were the write-ins useful? Please specify the locations you attended.

was the duration ok? too short? too long?

were the days of the week ok?

helpful or not to have them every weekend in November?

too many word wars? too few? just right?

any suggestions for improvements?

I will be hosting both write-ins this weekend. Anyone planning to come out?

Too Many Back ups?

Today, as things wind down, I was doing some house keeping on my lap top and found an additional 20,000 words that I had saved in a different file during one of my back up attempts. I had saved Back ups on my main PC, on my laptop, and on two different zip drives. Paranoid, yes, but for good reason after a huge loss in 2006. Has any one else found extra words hidden away or have a horror story from this year?
Advice for those trying to reach 50k

I had posted a thread asking for advice in the Reaching 50k forum. Here are the results:

various wrote:

I think my only advice would be to stay awake until you've written however many words you need to that day.

Just write, write and keep on writing. I was getting frustrated about being behind for three days and yesterday I just pushed myself to go until I hit a certain point and I actually got into the groove and when I looked up I was even farther than I had expected!

I love word wars. Compete, even with only one other person... good way to get a thousand words or so in 15/20 minutes

Here's my advice: Do as much of your writing as you can earlier in the day so you don't have to stay up late to get it done later. Sleep is very important for productivity.

I know this has been said a billion times across the forums, but I just tried Write or Die last night, and I loved it. It's like working with your boss standing over your shoulder the whole time ready to give you a kick in the pants the second you slack off, except, you know, fun.

Guys, the best way to stay on course is not to veer off of it. It may sound simple, but sometimes we don't realize how much we actually /do/ veer. Ignore the shiny ideas that pop in your head, urging you to create another novel. It will only end the one you've already worked so hard on! :)

I'll just say persistence. I'm probably the slowest writer above 75k, as I only today managed to get 2k in an hour for the first time - after four tries. For me, it's all about putting in the hours, during the night if necessary.

Probably...set a goal, and follow it. God, I am such a hypocrite...but still, stick to that goal. If the suggested word count is too much for you, lower it. I know I have had to considerably lower it. *Pokes word count* Also, reach out for encouragement. When I feel like I am a failure, you know what I do? I ask my mom or friends for support and encouragement.

Don't give up, dudes. Also, don't tell the guy trying to get you into college that you're doing your apps while writing a novel in 30 days. He probably won't be all that supportive. Good luck!

-post-

Write or Die is my advice. It's awesome.

Write write write write. Even if you think you're no longer making sense.

Um advice... um, um, um, um, um, um........ just stay up all night until you think you might pass out on the keyboard then DON'T and keep writing until your mom comes down and yells at you to go to bed becuase it's ONE IN THE MORNING!!!!!!!!!
.... o.O I'm so tired...

At all costs, ignore your inner editor. S/he will kill your story. Don't listen! Of course what you're writing is more than likely an enormous pile of utter garbage! It's a first draft, it's supposed to be that way! The inner editor can have at it after you've finished.
Oh, and write something everyday. Even if it feels like your head is going to explode. Even if it feels like bilge that doesn't even deserve to be on the page. It's the only way to get the story out. Now excuse me while I go off to make my head asplode some more.

My advice is simple: do what works for you. My way of getting there is to write the same amount each day. So long as I'm consistent, I can get there. For others, it may be that simply writing some every day, be it only 300 words or 6k words, so long as they get some written. So find what works and stick with it.

I started LATE. I am getting side-tracked ALL THE TIME. I went to a coffeehouse to avoid distraction, and look at me now, after finding out they have WLAN at the coffeehouse...
But here's me, trying to use the advice of some fellows up there: I am not leaving this table until I reach 10 000!!! I sat down at 6K, which means I am halfway there :) 2K took me considerably longer than an hour, but I did it! I can do another 2K.

----------
Fifteen word summary of your novel

Saturday, November 22, 12:15-4 pm at the Warrenville City Hall will be the first All-Illinois Write-In, which is now open to all Illinois WriMo's. This is the RSVP thread. Because we have a legal limit on how many people we can accommodate at the hall (87), people will need to RSVP--this is a first-come, first-serve event. To commit to attending, just post a reply of the form: VOTE="yes"

NEW: Katherine and I will be providing sandwich fixin's and chips for lunch starting at 12:15 PM (bring your own drinks; there is also a source of hot water there for tea and cocoa).

You can add other comments (such as if you can bring some treats for the hungry writers!). Other options are:
VOTE="no" (you can put this to change your answer from yes to no--the latest post is used)
VOTE="maybe" (to be entered on the wait list)

Please be sure to follow this form closely.

If your status changes, please update our list of attendees by posting the change. This will allow folks on the wait list to move to a confirmed status.

If you are able to bring a treat or help with shuttling folks coming in from the train station (or in any other way), just specify it with
OFFERING="what you are offering"

If you are bringing guests you can note it in the OFFERING as well; e.g., OFFERING="bringing two guests"

Thanks!

There is a Metra stop about 9 minutes (4.1 miles) south of the City Hall. We'll try to make arrangements to shuttle folks--please note if you will be taking the train.

Update: Some folks have offered rides; if you need on, please contact them directly to make arrangements.

Have you properly set your timezone?

Go to User settings to set your timezone. Be sure to check this or else you might find the last day ending sooner than it should. NaNoWriMo will turn off validation for you at midnight, December 1st, wherever it thinks your timezone is.

Joining Halfway Through

I heard about this really late but I'm going to give it a try anyway. I have a crazy work schedule this month but I'll do my best to get our word count up. I've never written anything before but what the hell. I am in Woodridge near Route 53, if there are any other first-time, not sure why I thought I could do this writers near me, let's meet for coffee or something. How do I get myself in to these things? Katherine Smith Gillis, leftovermango@comcast.net
What was your first year like?

So this is my first year, and I'm behind, but I haven't given up hope.

I was just wondering, mostly because I REALLY don't want to give up, how the rest of you did and felt during your first attempt (or win!) at NaNo?

I've told too many of my friends that giving up would be a really horrible idea for me. Too much ridicule and disappointment :(
Let people 50,000 years from now read your words!

In 2010 or 2011, a time capsule will be launched into space, with enough information on it for every single human on the planet earth to send a 4 page message, completely uncensored, to our descendants(or whoever might encounter it). The KEO will reenter the Earth's atmosphere in 50,000 years.

I'm a total nerd for this stuff. In fact, a similar project, Operation Immortality, inspired the idea for my Nano novel this year. That project only allowed about 3 sentences, though, and I wasn't satisfied with what I ended up sending. But my words are now on the International Space Station, which is still kinda cool.

It doesn't have to be a message to people, you could put a short story or poem in there if you like, obviously.

So if you're interested:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KEO (more info about the project)
http://www.keo.org/uk/pages/message.php (direct link to send your message, not sure if you can change it once submitted, though, so give yourself some time to be sure it's what you want to send)

There's also other ways to help as well. They're planning on sending up a digital 'library of alexandria' up as well, so you can help contribute to that if you like.

----------
Halfway there...?

Today is the halfway point in NaNoWriMo... In the other thread, it sounds like a few people have given up (but I have to say, Becky, that I liked your story idea and characters very much!), some are in trouble and others are sailing through...

On day 15, the halfway point (or wherever we are when you read this thread), how are you doing? Where are you in your story? How have your characters developed? Any surprises for you?

I write this after the Warrenville write-in (when we were treated to freshly made caramel apples from Jenstasi, 72% dark chocolate and hot cocoa (from me) among other goodies (thanks to everyone who brought them!) + word war prizes courtesy of KathyB), where I managed to make it within about 1200 of today's wordcount goal. I'm not quite halfway there, my characters are still wandering out in the wilderness, but things are starting to happen plot-wise and I'm just now starting to feel the beginnings of some acceleration. One of my would-be villains is turning out to be a sympathetic character (surprise to me!) and I have yet to mention my title character (the Witch of Andvarra), which is troubling--will need to hint at her existence on the rewrite, I think; or maybe change the title!

Still have maybe 60% of the story ahead of me. Have encountered some days where I've despaired at more story but am feeling a bit more positive today.

Come share with the rest of us where you are.

Looking for a miracle for a writer who's too ill to NaNo this year

I'm lagging way behind in my word count this year because my dear friend and fellow writer Erik Brandenburg was just diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, and told that his only chance of a cure is a bone marrow transplant. He's been too ill to NaNo, and we haven’t been able to find a matching donor among his family members or in the NMDP Registry.

We're holding a bone marrow donor registration drive from 10 - 3 on November 15th at the Downers Grove Public Library (1050 Curtiss St, Downers Grove). Volunteers need only complete a consent/registration form, a health questionnaire, and a simple cheek swab to determine if they could help save a life. For what it's worth: due to advances in medicine, doctors can now extract cells Erik needs from circulating blood, rather than needing to tap the bone marrow directly. This means that saving someone's life could be as easy as donating blood. As tissue type characteristics are inherited, people from similar ethnic backgrounds have the greatest chance of being a match. For Erik, this would be someone of Northern European ancestry – especially German, British, or Swiss. Feel free to drop by before the write-in tomorrow if you'd like, or to drop an encouraging word to Erik Brandenburg via facebook or via the ErikBrandenburg page at www.carepages.com.

I'd also be grateful for any ideas from NaNoers on how to extract your head from worries and re-immerse it in writing. And any tricks people use to catch up instead of giving up if they've gotten off course?

Regional wordwar what ifs...

Our regional word war with France is going swimmingly... In fact, we're quite a bit in front. So much so that I was wondering if we should explore challenging a second region to war...

What do you think? Here are some possibilities:

Ottawa: last year's big push was scary; and they are bigger than we are, but maybe we could take them this year (as we did last year). On the other hand, they never gave us the mp3 of their recording of our regional song...

Indianapolis: I accidentally developed this graph while putting together the one for France. It is like they are our twin! But their ML says that they are too wrapped up in their primary wordwar vs. St. Louis (even though St. Louis is trouncing them by as much as we are trouncing France)... She did say that maybe a rivalry might develop here at a WriMo level...

And, dare I raise the spectre... Edmonton: they are bigger than we are and led us for a long time, but the Katherine and Sabrina (and others) have lifted us to a place where we might be competitive. SarahJanet's crew is tough and they are renown throughout the ML community as the region to beat...

A good regional wordwar can be exciting... What do you think?

--Tim
