Come introduce yourself in this thread! As a reminder, this is a public forum--don't share personal contact information (e-mail addresses, real life address, phone numbers) in your posts.

I am Tim aka NewMexicoKid, one of the three volunteer co-MLs for our great region. I've been participating in (and succeeding with) NaNoWriMo since 2003; and I have been a co-Municipal Liaison since 2005. Mostly I write fantasy novels; and several of these, including this year's, center on a protagonist I originally based on my daughter (who coincidentally also has participated in and won NaNoWriMo).

I am not a published author (yet) but have aspirations of one day doing this. Be sure to ask about the Journey (formerly called the Pledge)--this is our year-round writing group.

In real life, I am a software engineer at Alcatel-Lucent.

Oh, and I enjoy drawing (you can see some of my designs at at our regional cafepress shop).

[sticky!] Write-in logistics (updated 11/5 9 a.m.)

What should I bring to a write-in

laptop if you have one (if you're coming to a Sunday write-in, contact me if you want to use my spare laptop)
extension cords and power strips (useful if you have them)
snacks and drinks (purely optional)

There are three official write-in locations and quasi-official ones at coffee shops or restaurants or ... (feel free to schedule you own--just try to give people a couple of days notice so they can plan for it ;-)

Naperville
The 95th Street Library room A (except for November 1st, when the write-in will be in the Children's Program Area at the back of the children's department) is the site of the write-ins from 1-4 pm every Sunday in November (Nov 1, 8, 15, 23, 30). I (NewMexicoKid) will be the ML host for all of these.

Warrenville
The Warrenville City Hall (main chambers--really cool space) is the site of write-ins from 1-4 pm Nov 7, 14* and 21 (the 14th one might be cancelled unless we have a volunteer to host since Katherine and I are both going to the All State Illinois Write-In in downtown Chicago (Nov 14)). Directions: Located southeast of Butterfield & Batavia. From downtown Naperville, go north on Washington St. turn left onto Warrenville Rd (stop light--Washington ends.) Right turn at second light (Ferry Road is straight) to stay on Warrenville Road. Right turn on Batavia (no stop required if going right.) Turn left on Manning Ave (street before Butterfield Rd.), one block, then right on Warren, left at round-about and City Hall is on the left (before the library.) Katherine (KatherineWriting) is the host.

Plano Library
The Plano Library hosts sessions Nov 7, 14 and 21 from 12:30 pm-3:30 pm. Dave (TRRDEDEAN) is hosting these.

Caribou Cafe (Wed evening, 6:30 pm) map
See this thread. On Wednesday, November 4th we had 14 people! Plan for next week is to start occuping tables near the back starting a bit before 6:30, and work our way across the room. Katherine is hosting.

Panera in Wheaton (Fri 12:15 pm)
See this thread. Friday, November 6th is the first one at Panera Bread in Wheaton. Katherine is hosting (and will do this again, if there is enough interest.)

Yes, I can tell what some of you are thinking. What does Affiliation entail and why should I do it? Ditto with setting a Home Region. Why?

Affiliation
Affiliating yourself with a region

Adds a region to your My Regions page (available in the drop down menu under My NaNoWriMo)
Potentially subscribes you to receiving regional e-mail for that region (under Manage my settings). We tend to send mail about once or twice a week in November.

Setting a Home Region

Go to the Home Region tab
on the My Regions page.
Select Naperville and click the Set Home region button

Note that you must be affiliated with a region before you can set it as your Home Region. You can be affiliated with many regions but you only have one Home Region.

Why go through this?
During November, it's fun to compare our region's progress against all the regions in the world, both in word count and donations. Please help us by ensuring your successes are included in our regional total. To do this, you need to affiliate with Naperville AND set Naperville as your Home Region.

Welcome to Naperville, the rough geographic center of this patch of the western suburbs of Chicago (and including established cities like Aurora), the fifth year of our region's separate existence (prior to 2005, our region existed only as part of Illinois::Elsewhere).

MLs
KatherineWriting, TRRDEDEAN and I (NewMexicoKid) are your co-Municipal Liaisons, volunteers who somehow enjoy making your NaNoWriMo experience an enjoyable and (hopefully) a successful one.

Local Events
We have a full slate of October events (two prep sessions plus an October 31st pot-luck lunch kick-off extravaganza), a few nice goodies to hand out (at our events), and not one, not two, but three official write-in locations this year:

95th Street Library in Naperville - 1-4 pm, every Sunday in November
Warrenville City Hall - 1-4 pm, Saturday, Nov 7, 14, 21.

Word War

Just a quick thank you to all three Naper MLs! It's a hard job - a job that few even consider taking on with good reason! We may not know what it takes to juggle home, work, your novel, children, AND planning write-ins, kick-off parties, and TGIO parties but we can all agree that it takes some serious effort!

...and possibly latent suicidal tendencies!

Regardless of exactly how you are getting motivated we all thank you for getting us motivated!

Strangest Place You've Been Writing

I suppose the subject of this thread could refer to a bizarre setting of your story (and by all means, share that with us too) but I'm more curious about odd locales for pulling out your laptop or pen and paper to get a few words plugged out.

For me, I've been typing away while seated on the stairwell of a Metra car, a crowded CTA bus, and on the floor at Union Station in Chicago (there's a reason I keep a sample size of Purell in my backpack).

Just me or does anyone else have strange places where they've found themselves writing?

Write-ins in Aurora (new!)

The Aurora Public Library has organized write-ins at their three branches for NaNoWriMo. Their original focus is the Young Writer's Program but they are generously opening their planned write-ins to NaNoWriMo participants as well. They apparently have PCs that people can use for these write-ins; or you are welcome to bring your own.

These write-ins will likely not have the precise flavor of our other write-ins; I don't believe that any of us MLs have the bandwidth to attend and facilitate them. I do believe, however, that Aurora librarians will be present to help out; and I introduced Angie to the concept of word wars, so I encourage you to go give them a try. :-)

It is quite possible the Aurora Public Library will join the Naperville Public Library and the Plano Library as partners with our region for next year. :-) :-)

Regional word war candidates?

I'm starting to check the regional wordcount list to find a good region for us to challenge (probably going for an average wordcount wordwar like last year's against France). Some early possibilities:

Europe::Norway (139 wrimos, 5749 wpw),
Australia & New Zealand::Brisbane (209 wrimos, 5566 wpw), and
Asia::Philippines (136 wrimos, 5512 wpw).
Texas::San Antonio (164 wrimos, 5733 wpw)
Scotland::Glasgow (109 wrimos, 6035 wpw--currently ahead of us)
Europe::France (180 wrimos, 6662 wpw--currently way ahead of us)

We're currently at: 168 wrimos, 5849 wpw

Any thoughts on this? Another possibility: I can write a tool that will compare the top twenty or forty or sixty of our writers against the top from another region...

Strangest Bit You Didn't Expect

Having just wrote about a character tagging a baby penguin with her son's name on Facebook, I figured it was time to start a post--
what's the strangest thing you've written so far that you totally didn't plan on writing?
(50 words or less.)
Once the character did that, she can now have vague images of penguins (and you do know what baby penguins eat, right?) in her brain for the next several days. I had no plan on writing about penguins, but it's making me smile.

What Pulse is a website that counts your key strokes and mouse clicks. For all you paranoid people out there, it does not record what you're writing. It just counts.
So if you'd like to know if your fingers have typed their way to Mars and back, then you should try this. There is a small, free software download. You can join (or form) a team and compete with each other.
If you think writing 50,000 words is exhilarating, imagine how it feels to know you have tapped over a million keys.

Tech disasters - 2009

It's not "if" but "when." Computer breakdowns, blackouts, file erasures - we will all have them sooner or later. And we will all need to vent about it. Post your disasters here!

Let me begin. At 10pm Saturday night, two hours before I had planned to start typing away, our house computer's monitor died a horrible death. It's not a hard drive crash or anything, but it did mean taking the monitor off of my NaNo computer and putting it on the main computer. I am now computerless until Tuesday, at which point I will have some crazy catching up to do. In the meantime, I'm sneaking on the house computer when I am able.

Oh yes, and by the way, everyone, PLEASE remember to back up your novel!!!

My 20000 word challenge

I am going to be writing 20000 words in the first four days of National Novel Writing Month because on the 5th I will be leaving and out of town for one week and I will not have access to a computer in that time. So I am going to get my word count up to the point it would be at if I were here the whole time so that when I get back I will not be behind.

Does anybody else want to try to get that many words that early on?

I know some of you are planning on going way over 50000 this month, so if you like you can try to get a similair goal like this.
Or you can try to race me to it.

'Twas the Night Before NaNo

Not a keyboard was typing, not a click of a mouse.
The stickers were hung by the writer with care,
In Hopes that a Novel, soon would be there.

The Editors were nestled, all snug in their beds,
While visions of red pens, danced in their heads.
with Chris Baty in his viking hat and I in my shirt,
All the wrimo’s world wide, sat waiting to work.

When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my writing spot, to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Tore open the window, threw up the sash.

The moon was big, with a very bright glow
and it looked like a screen that had something to show.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a story and eight characters.

With a little plot arc ,so lively and round,
I knew in a moment, “My Novel – I’ve found!”
More rapid then eagles the chapters they came
and the story whistled and shouted and called things by name,

“Now characters, Now plot arcs, now storylines and more,
“On conflict, On turmoil, On plot twists galore.
To the top of the plot line, to November’s 50 K
Now write away, write away, write away today.”

As dead words before the wild month fly,
When they meet with a Muse and mount to the sky
So up to my desk top these coursers, they flew
with a slew full of ideas, and my muse too.

And then in a twinkling I heard on my desk
The smattering of words, taking one last rest.
As I drew in my hand and was turning around
Appeared, did my muse, in one single bound.

It was dressed in all words, from it’s head to it’s foot
and it’s clothes were all tarnished with erasure gook.
It’s bundle of stories were flung on it’s back
And it looked like Chris Baty – What’s up with that?

It’s eyes how they shimmered, It’s dimples how scary,
It’s cheeks were all blustery, it’s smile so merry.
It’s droll little mouth was drawn up like an “oh”
And not a beard on it’s chin, that’d be freaky, ya know?

The stump of a pencil it held tight in it’s teeth,
And punctuation encircled it it’s head like a wreath.
It had a bright face and a round cuppa coffee
That shook when it laughed, without ever sloshing.

It was awkward and lumpy, a right crazy old elf
And I laughed when I saw it, inspite of myself.
A wink of Its eye and a twist of Its head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

It spoke not a word, but went straight to my desk
And It looked at my blank page then said, “Surely you Jest”
Laying its fingers aside of my keys, It winked at me once,
And slid inward with ease.

It sprang on my screen, to the words it gave whistle
and away they all flew to it, like the down of a thistle
But I heard it exclaim, err it faded into the night

Located at 400 S Eagle St, Naperville, IL, the Naperville Municipal Center is one block south of the Nichols Library in downtown Naperville. The 2009 kick-off party will be in the lower level, rooms B&C.

RSVP and planning
Just post below whether you're bringing a friend and what dish, snacks, drink, ice, plates, napkins, etc. you're volunteering to bring. People are not required to bring something but it would be good to have a decent amount of food on hand.

You can also volunteer to bring appropriate games. Unlike previous kick-offs, we are actually hoping to play some games this year :-)

Illinois - all-state write-in!

TimSimms, one of the MLs for Chicago, is organizing this year's (and the second annual) all-Illinois-state write-in. It will be November 14th, Saturday (which conflicts with two of our own write-ins) but promises to be lots of fun (we hosted last year and it was electric):
