Me, I'm writing about late 1930's/WWII era Australia. Mostly because that was where my MC decided he wanted to travel back in to time too (all the better to play cricket and fall in love with his best friend, I suppose) but I'm kind of glad because although the research will probably drive me insane, it's a fascinating thing, learning about a period in Australian history that I've never really been taught about (we did WWI but not so much WWII on the home front).

So what attracted you to your particular era and country? Was it something special or just where the characters fitted best? And are there are particular challenges to writing/researching this particular period? (Mine - I have to know far more about outdoor dunnys than I ever wanted to know, among other things).

I'm writing about London, Canada in 1880 because this is where I live. It all started with a research project my twelve-year-old was supposed to do for school. We started digging and I got really fascinated with what was going on right here back then. (Did you know that Southwestern Ontario was the centre of the original oil boom?) So I started envisioning a romance centred around local events, while my daughter went off and did her project on Canadian technology in space!

My NaNo books is set during the Revolutionary War in Boston. I cannot tell you for sure why I decided on Boston. In fact, I can't really say that there was any decision making. Usually when I'm writing, things just fit together.
My other book that I am writing (non NaNo) is set just outside of London in 1719. Now that on the other hand did go through a lot of changes. Mostly on the time frame though. It started out in the late 18th century and I eventually moved it way back.

My most recent work-in-progress (my NaNo07 attempt and a sequel to my Nano06) is set in the American South in the early 1800s. I visited South Carolina, where my NaNo06 takes place, and just fell in love.

Mine is set in the not so distance past, but it was before I was born and is requiring a fair amount of research on my part.

It's the mid 60s in a small town in America and also following a young guy from said town who's fighting in Vietnam.

And that's all I have at the moment... :)

The novel I'm currently planning is set in Europe in the mid 1920s. I'm not quite sure what country I'm going to be using yet, but I think it is going to be a Slavic one. I'm tempted to use Russia, because it fascinates me, but the plot line came about from me studying Russian history so it won't really work. The year had to be around this time, because of what happens in the novel. It should be quite a bit of work to figure out everything, but fun. =)
