Have you read Barbara Hambly's Sold Down the River? It's set on a sugar plantation near New Orleans, and it's pretty vividly described.

See, my book is about a girl growing up on a southern cotton plantation. I'm working on making my sotry come more to life...

Try the following historical societies with specific questions.

Louisiana http://www.louisianahistoricalsociety.org/

Mississippi http://mdah.state.ms.us/admin/mhistsoc.html

Alabama http://www.archives.state.al.us/aha/aha.html

Does it have to be a cotton plantation could it be a sugar, rice or indigo plantation?
