Hey,

I'm not even sure if there's a resource like this out there, not that my googling has found anyway.

I've started work on my idea for NaNo this year and I'm wanting to get to grips with my main characters early on. Are there any character development sheets (you know the idea, list likes and dislikes, family members, etc.) which are specifically designed for historical characters? I've seen them for sci-fi and fantasy but not for historical fiction.

If not I'd be tempted to make my own, I'd like to explore some of the key events going on at the time of the story but I don't know how my characters would feel about them and I'm needing some prompting right now :D

Thanks.

Cait

Hello Cait,
I have been working on my historical novel since Nov 1 '07. I developed a bunch of forms on Excel to help me develop character and plot. If you send me your email address, I will send them to you. MsElan@CherylCarroll.com is mine.

I am a historical fiction writer myself (for the most part) and when it comes to character planning, I usually go to: http://www.thescriptorium.net/biography.html. So perhaps that might help.

It isn't specifically for historical novels, but I use (adapt) the one from the Eclectic Writer's site: http://www.eclectics.com/writing/writing.html.
After that, and what gets me closer to my characters, is doing the Snowflake Method: http://www.advancedfictionwriting.com/art/snowflake.php. I've learned more about my minor characters from doing this with them than I have with any character fill-in chart.
