Read your work on the radio!

If the pride and joy of winning nanowrimo isn't enough motivation to cross 50k (though frankly, I can't imagine that it isn't), how does this sound? If you write 50k or more, you have the opportunity to read an excerpt of your novel on the radio!

Ann Arbor has a radio program on KFJC called Dancin' In The Fast Lane that is broadcast on Wednesday mornings (http://www.kfjc.org/programming/program_info.php?houroftheweek=54&info_i...). During one of the segments on that show, Unbedtime Stories, she reads excerpts from books. For the last few years, she has offered that reading slot to nano participants who have successfully crossed the 50k line.

So, if you want to read part of your glorious novel on the radio, cross that finish line and contact Ann Arbor! Her email is AArborKFJC@aol.com.
SF Nanos rock!!

I wanted to thank everyone at the SF TGIO Party last night who helped write out 36 holiday cards for our service people overseas. I put the cards down on the table with little expectation that anyone would notice, but when I came back 2 hours later, folks had written beautiful things in the cards (and one intrepid and talented soul even decorated some of the envelopes)!

The company I work for will be shipping the cards out tomorrow so they arrive in time for the holidays. I'll be proud and happy to add these cards to the company's total effort.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help with this. A lot of people will get a smile and maybe feel a little closer to home because of your efforts.

I'm getting ready to send out a regional email, and I figured I should start a discussion thread so it will be here for the 1300+ subscribers to chime in on.

The Pan Bay TGIO is Saturday, December 1st from 7-10pm at Root Division.

Would you like to have a San Francisco only party, Saturday December 8th or Sunday December 9th?

Note: The SF TGIO is now aimed for January. as of 11/24/07 or so.

Where? When? What? Who? Huh?

Speak up folks!
Join young writers for a NaNoWriMo launch party at Black Oak Books!

They came. They wrote. Soon they will have conquered — and you are invited to their literary debuts!

Join us at Black Oak Books for this stupendous launch party for young local winners of National Novel Writing Month.

Not only will we hear a dozen brand new young novelists read from their just-completed first works, but as a very special treat they will share the stage with six published children’s authors! Acclaimed writers Daniel San Souci, Ruthanne Lum McCunn, Ji-Li Jang, Mary Jo See, Deborah Davis and Nydia Nicholl will read stories and share insights about the writer’s life.

Kids of all ages are invited to the celebration and can show off their own writing, poetry and art by bringing a page of their creative work to be displayed in the store. Adults are invited too! We’ll have winners’ crowns and author photos, plus raffle prizes, interactive art and science projects, snacks and tons of fun.

Everyone is a winner, and everyone is welcome! For more information, visit www.blackoakbooks.com.

admitting defeat

so i realized a day or so ago, that i am going to have to admit defeat - i won't be winning this year. i cringe just typing that. i'll be happy at this point if i hit 25,000, and really happy if I can hit 30,000.

i have to say, though, i'm pretty proud of myself for what i've done so far. this month, everyone in my family got sick, twice, i hosted people for a week, and cooked and served thanksgiving for 15 (maybe next year I'll pass on the huge turkey day plans and can win nano!). I'm also a stay-at-home mom of two little munchkins. i think i probably could have finished if i had neglected my children (more than usual, you know), and we'd all eaten take-out everyday, but I'm just not willing to do that. Even winning nanowrimo isn't worth not spending time with them. I know, my priorities are ALL out of order!

so i've realized that i CAN carve out time to write, AND spend time with my kiddos, AND strike some semblance of balance between it all.

and isn't that what nanowrimo is all about? it's like Chris said at the write-a-thon (which helped me log over 5,000 words): winning nanowrimo made him realize if he could write 50,000 words in a month, what ELSE could he do?

do i still get to go to the TGIO party?

The Fifty Thousandth Word

Hey, everyone who's already crossed over or is about to....post your 50,000th word in this thread! With or without context, it's all good.

Last year, mine was Sheriff." -- that's right, a capital, period, and a close-quote. [part of the sentence where a green and white American car showed up on the commune, and printed on its side was "Mendocino County Sheriff."] Naturally, the story wasn't done at that point...that was sort of early in the all-hell-breaks-loose part. (which you can probably guess, if the sheriff was showing up.)

44K and counting, so my 50Kth probably won't be till Friday or Saturday--but let's hear it from you early winners!
Burning the midnight oil: BACIO CAFE (Downtown San Mateo)

Hey all,

If you still need to abuse your laptops and keyboards like me and are looking for a spot in the mid-peninsula, give thought to try out this cafe called Bacio Cafe.

It is technically on Main Street, but the main driving intersection will be B Street and 2nd Avenue right next to the Century Theatres Box Office.

It is open until Midnight tonight. There is free wifi. Great owners (truthfully, they're my friends first, but they are wonderful with their customers). Oh, and there are A LOT of outlets to plug into.

Most importantly, the coffee and espresso is good and there are lots of areas for you to get your Wrimo on.

Free parking on the streets and city garages after 6pm. The City garage on 2nd Ave is only 25 cents per hour until 6pm. Then you're scott free til you decide to leave.

You can celebrate your triumph afterwards with desert, beer/wine (if you so choose), and also a live DJ from 9-12. No worries, you'll be able to type with your own headphones and not be disturbed in case you want to create your own special place.

In all honesty, I've logged almost 20 hours here this month, and I'm really thankful for spots like this. In this past week, since Sunday, I've run uphill (to the tally of 16,000 words all in this week. Wow. And just a little less than 6000 to go!)

Keep pushing y'all! This is my first year doing this and it's been a strange and wonderful struggle. Keep imagining!

Hey folks,

I'll be heading to Lo Cubano again on Wednesday evening (unless I get stuck out of town for work). I'll be there from 7 til 9 or 10 or whenever. Tasty coffee, good writing tunes, and a parking lot in the back. What more could you want?

Brickhouse Tonight (11/13) (now 11/20)

Just blasted this to sfnanos.org peeps, here it is for others.

Quote:

For those of you considering coming to the Brickhouse, I'm here in the upstairs area. There's a party downstairs, and the stairs are chained, but you can come on up.

They've gone a bit upscale/saloon style compared to last year, and there is recorded music playing a bit loud, but it may still be viable if you can concentrate through some background noise. I suspect it will get quieter as the night goes on.

They have a dinner menu, the burgers are on the back. :) You can place your order downstairs at the counter. Tip generously :)

Organizing Write ins for 9-5ers

Hey there,

I am sad I will not get much of a chance to meet those of you who will be writing earlier in the day, but perhaps we may meet on a weekend?

In any case, it took me until now to realize that we have yet to have a meeting spot for those living in the Castro/mission area that begins sometime after 5pm (If I'm wrong please correct me, I'm going by the official schedule posted on the 28th). In any case, I would recommend The Church Street Cafe on Church beween 14th and 15th. They are open till 11pm weeknights (including Sunday) and till midnight on Fridays and Saturday. Plenty of chairs, places to plug in your lap top, and the service is friendly. I go there all the time to write poetry - the pac man players can be a bit cumbersome at times though.

Anyway, who would like to meet up with me there, or anywhere else in the Mission/Castro/Haight area after 5pm...more like 7ish I think? There are a lot of other great places too. My friend and I were making a list. We could check out Muddy Waters on 24th and Valencia, Mission Creek, and maybe the Marsh depending on whether there is a performance or not (there is a theater above the cafe).

Btw, I don't know if this is strange...but I have no doubt in my mind that I will finish a novel in 30 days. Am I being too bold or something? Cuz from what I understand most people have doubts about this.

Write-Ins for the Thanksgiving weekend?

Hey all--sorry to be so vanishingly rare for the first half of the month, but the co-ML-ing thing came to me at the last moment, and I had a busy couple of weeks already planned. But! Now I'm back, and ready to get some major word count going.

Who's around the weekend after Thanksgiving? I am, and would love to get together with other NaNoers in the Mission/Noe area, Saturday and/or Sunday. There's been talk on another thread about the Church Street Cafe; that would work for me, and I'm still going to try to make Wednesday nights there. Anyway--let me know!

I am at Royal Ground on Geary at 18th, coffee is good, not too crowded, outlets etc. It's 11 am now, and I'll probably be here until 3 pm when they close. I will have a Nano Write-In sign on the table.
C'mon down if you don't like the Macy's Day parade, can't cook, are driving yourself crazy trying to write in the house. Or you want to write a bunch of words to work up an appetite, or work off the calories (mentally) you're going to consume later!

Have you realized that you have a couple of hours later today ? And that you fancy heading over to a cafe to work on your word count?
Greetings from Your SF ML & Roll Call

Okay, I should have written this a few days ago, but I just started a new job. I hope all of you will cut me some slack. Okay, now that that's over with, on to the post. :)

Hi, I'm Kenne, your friendly neighborhood Municipal Liason and two time Nano winner. It is my pleasure to be your tourguide through November. I'm working on having some fun and crazy things for you all to participate in. Of course, your top priority, like mine is, is to get those novels written. But, trust me, we CAN have fun while we do it.

I'm currently not as available on the internet as I'd like, so please bear with me. However, I plan on throwing together a kicking kick-off gathering later this month so that all of you can meet.

Until then, please take a moment to introduce yourself in this thread. Looking forward to meeting you all and celebrating with you when we win Nano.
