The Traditional Utah Wordwar!

Well, it's that time again! This is the signup thread for the Traditional Utah Wordwar. Rules are pretty much the same as last year:

1. Signups close November 7th at 11:59 PM.
2. You can't withdraw after the close of signups, but you may withdraw at any point up to that time.
3. The winning team is the one with the best average wordcount.
4. No updates of more than 10k words a day.
5. Three (!) teams: SLC, Utah County, and Elsewhere. Make sure to post which team you want.

To sign up, post in this thread for the time being. I'll see if I can polish off the upgrade to the stats page before NaNo starts, and then we'll use that, but for now, this is the place.

Previous years:
2006 Stats
2007 Stats
2008 Stats

This year (not perfect yet, but it has most of the '3 teams' fixes in place.):
2009 Stats

Teams:

See the above link. I'm tired of maintaining two lists. :)
UtahWrimos.net IRC Server

Well, we have a chat server for our own use now. It is an IRC server with a web interface, for those who don't want to bother with using a full blown IRC client.

The web interface is here: http://www.utahwrimos.net/pjirc/

If you have an IRC client, click here: irc://linode.kydance.net/nanowrimo

Kydance.net is my business domain, and since the IRC server may see uses for my business as well, I figured I'd stick it there.

For those unfamiliar with IRC, once you log in through the web interface, all you really need to know is that to change your name from Guest?? to whatever you want, you just type '/nick '. For example, if you wanted your name to be Foobar, you would type '/nick Foobar'.

Really, I'm frightened that I'm the only one. I would really like to get together with people my own age for a write-in. At a library or other such places. Any ideas?
SLC+Nanowrimo+Wine

Being new to this area, I would like to pose this question.
1)Does SLC have a wine bar or something sort of low key-not crazy like a regular bar/pub that could be conducive to writing/give one a new writing location and
2)if such a place exists, would anyone like to meet up at this place and we could write with the assistance of a bit of company & wine? :D just curious!

** Introductions

Hello all you Rocky Mountain WriMoose!

For those who are new to NaNo or our region, I am Banai (rhymes with Renee), the ML. This will be my third year as ML. IRL, I am a professional genealogist and a web site developer (reluctantly on the latter now, but I still have to pay the bills).

I have participated in NaNoWriMo since 2003, when I randomly found the web site in October. I have won every year. (I have to. I have OCD. Failure is not an option.)

I still have no idea what I'm writing this year. I've got a title for a wacky idea in my profile, but I'd rather come up with something better.

We have a Facebook group that we started last year. It was kind of an alternative when the NaNo site crashed last year. (For anyone new, the site crashing in early November is typical, but this year it may have a chance of working through the whole month with the new server setup. Note the amazon logo at the bottom of the page.)

We also have a Twitter account, if you didn't notice that yet: @SLCWriMo. (Yes, I'm taking these web sites too far lately. Hopefully this is a phase that will pass. Again, the OCD, so it will need some time.)

Links to both of those are in the forum header under "Regional Info."

I look forward to seeing y'all at the kick-off, write-ins, and tgio this year!

College Grads Participating in NaNoWriMo?

I just finished my Bachelor's Degree at ITT Technical Institute in Murray in August and was wondering how many of my fellow Utah Wrimos are post-college types?
Any Hunter/Jumper horse people wrimo-ing this year?

Hey, I was just wondering if any other English Hunter/Jumper horse people were writing this year? I figured since most of the English barns are in the Salt Lake/South Jordan area, this was the most likely place to find you. =D
Sweepstakes for Participants (especially Utahns-- saves me shipping!) & Daily Creative Writing Prompts

I saw that someone else who lives in Utah posted about their contest here, so I figured it'd be safe to post about mine. If I am being naughty, please feel free to reprimand. I also posted this in the Self-Promotion area, but since I live in Utah as do most of my site authors, I'd like to especially extend the contest to fellow Utahns. On a side note, I noticed that there were some write-ins at the City Library, and I'm going to try to attend those. I'm quite excited for them! See you there.

Now here's the info about the sweepstakes and daily creative writing prompts:

I'm just here representing Idiosyncratic Protectional Field³, a site devoted to writing and all other creative pursuits; we're heavily promoting and encouraging NaNoWriMo on our website, and we're offering a few free perks during the NaNoWriMo season that you may like to take advantage of:

We're firstly sponsoring a sweepstakes for all NaNoWriMo participants. In a nutshell, you just need to finish your 50,000 words, and then you could win one of three spiffy prizes. You just need to enter the sweepstakes before the end of November 30th, and we'll take care of checking your word count here at NaNoWriMo and notifying you if you've won.

We're secondly posting a creative writing prompt on our home page every day during the month of November to help you get out of any ruts you might be stuck in. We normally publish three a week, so there's still a whole archive of older prompts that you can look through if you need something else to spark your imagination.

We also publish literary works submitted to us all of the time, so you can do that as well (though you ought to be concentrating on your 50,000 words-- not submitting short works to websites, silly).

On behalf of Idiosyncratic Protectional Field³, I wish us all good luck!
----------
Creative writing prompts daily during the NaNoWriMo season along with a sweepstakes for all NaNoWriMos:
** SLC Kick-Off Party at The Pie, Saturday, October 31, 1-5pm

We will be having our traditional kick-off party at The Pie on Satuday, October 31st from 1-5pm.

Date corrected: it will be on Saturday. I don't expect people to trek down to South Jordan in the middle of a workday.

The Pie
10607 S Redwood Rd, South Jordan, UT‎

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&fb=1&gl=us...

I ask that everyone contribute at least $5 to pay for the group pizzas. You are responsible for your own drinks or other extras. Come on out and meet your fellow writers!

We usually take over the patio area, though some years we just don't manage to scare everyone away. Don't worry, there are heaters if it's cold out.

RSVP here or to me at slcnano@greatbird.com. You are welcome to bring family and friends.

If you need a ride from Trax, or can carpool to help others attend, please post here also.

See you at The Pie!

Saturday Write-Ins at the City Library

Is everybody up for the write-ins on Saturdays at the City Library again? We've been doing this since before I was ML and I just wondered if anyone had any other ideas. Any good coffee shops that would tolerate us and provide enough electrical outlets maybe?

7 days to go - are we ready?

Yay! Only 7 days to go!

Some of us have ideas of what we're going to write (for varying values of the word "ideas"). Others of us don't. Or perhaps we have some slight smidgen of an idea but aren't sure how to flesh it out.

If you already have a fully developed idea, great! You're probably ahead of the majority. If you don't, why not post what you have so far and let the rest of us help brainstorm?

If you have absolutely nothing at all, well, there are a few random story generators out there. Here's a few:
http://www.theyfightcrime.org/
http://www.seventhsanctum.com/ - this one has a whole bunch of generators in one site.
http://www.gkbledsoe.com/articles/process/writing_prompt_generator.html
http://www.lifeformz.com/cgi-bin/idea/idea.fcgi

There's more (oh, boy, are there more!), but that's probably enough to get you started. Of course, if one of you has a site you really like and it's not here already, feel free to post it.

My reason for doing this is: the most active thread, by far, is the wordwar thread. That's great! But nobody's talking about their actual novel yet, at least not the regional board. And there's only seven days left. (Aieeeeeeee! Seven days left! Whatever shall I do? *pant pant* (slap self) *pained yelp* Sorry.) So I decided to see if I could prompt some discussion. As it's pretty late right now, I'll talk about my novel ideas later (ie, tomorrow), but if there are any night owls out there who want to get started on the discussion, feel free.

This is my first year. Lucky for me I go to school online and have all the time in the world to write.

The only problem? Losing motivation.
Nano Contest I'm Doing

I posted this over in Utah Elsewhere, but thought I'd post this here as well.

I'm doing what I did last year. A Clay Plot Bunny Drawing!

To sign up: Email me at magicalbookworm@gmail.com Place in the subject line Clay Bunny Drawing. In the main email and your Nanowrimo ID. Nothing more.

You can sign up starting now, the 24th of October sign up ends midnight November 1st! After midnight on the first all entries will be ignored.

The contest is open to everyone, everywhere.

There will be two drawings and thus two prizes! The two winners from last year are not able to enter for the first prize, but can go a head and try for the 2nd prize!

1.	The first person to reach 50,000 words and email me (magicalbookworm@gmail.com ) with the Nano Clay Bunny Drawing 50K in the subject line (Make sure to add the 50K so I know you've reached that amount). You have to email me when you hit 50,000 words. I won't be checking everyone on the list daily. So if someone hits 50K and doesn't email me and someone else does, the second person wins. Make sure to include your Nanowrimo name so I can double check your count.

2.	At the end of the month, the person who has the most words win. This one might be a bit trickier. On the 30th through the 2nd you'll have to email me: Place in the subject Clay Plot Bunny and your total word count for the month. In the body your Nanowrimo name. I'll then see who has the most words on the 3rd and email said person. Make sure to include your Nanowrimo name so I can double check your count!

I am going to put in a stipulation – the winner of the 50K bunny can not win the most words written for Nanowrimo bunny. So two people will win bunnies this year.

Now what bunnies can you win?

The bunnies are here: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=8157958

This is the shop link. If one of the winners wants a bunny from here, tell me and I'll take it off the shop list. Winners do not need to go through the check out process.

Here is the full list of what bunnies I have. I do have pictures of most of them here:

http://clayplotbunnies.googlepages.com/home

If I don't have a picture, there should be one somewhere on my computer I can place up on my webpage.

Alien green
Alien yellow
Angel
Angry
Art
Vampire victim
Western
Zombie

If you still want a bunny but know that you won't win, then they are 11$ a piece and 4$ to ship. If you want a bunny that is not on the Etsy site then email me (magicalbookworm@gmail.com) and I'll place the bunny up on my Etsy site for the person to buy. (link above.)

I do make custom bunnies and I do have a great list of ones to make. Any custom orders that come in will be done in December and shipped after they are created.

Winner of the 50K bunny will be shipped a week after they reach 50K. The winner of the most words written bunny will be shipped the second week of Dec.

I hope everyone signs up! :D
Westminser college NaNo writers?

Hey guys
I know there are at least of few of us Westminny NaNoWriMo peoples. But If there are more we should all go to coffee or something and get to know each other. Plus we could organize dorm room late night writing parties.
Let me know
:)

Remember, we start November at GMT -6:00, then when daylight savings ends and we go to GMT -7:00.

You might be at last year's setting of GMT -7:00. I suppose you could leave it. But your forum posts might show odd times if you do.
