[STICKY] TGIO Party - your input?

We're leaning toward either Friday, December 4th or Saturday, December 5th, around 6/7 pm for the Thank God It's Over party. The tentative plan is dinner at Ray's Steel City Saloon (where we held the kick-off party), where we can talk, chat, and otherwise celebrate a month of good old hard work. Everyone that participated in NaNoWriMo is invited to attend, as well as friends, loved ones, family, etc.-- we're all winners at the TGIO party.

Use this thread to RSVP to the TGIO party, tell Rachel and I which date works best for you all, and if you have alternative venue suggestions, let us know and we'll consider them.

This thread will be open for a few days while I await your suggestions, and look for the Official TGIO party thread to be posted sometime over the holiday weekend.
[STICKY] Official Write-Ins

Following is a master list of all of the Write-Ins scheduled for November. For those of you who have never been to a Write-In before, Write-Ins are events where participants gather together to, well, WRITE! So, bring your laptops (or pen and paper, if you prefer) and prepare to have fun conversations, and get a lot done! Many people at previous Tallahassee Write-Ins reached their word count for the day (over 1,667 words) and beyond. There will be a total of eight official Write-Ins during November, and we would love it if you would attend.

We have two primary locations, Panera Bread and the Leon County Library. If you prefer a quiet, academic writing atmosphere, come to the library meetings. If you prefer a cafe-style, laid back writing atmosphere, attend the Panera meetings. I (Rachel) will be hosting the meetings at the library. Maggie (PearlRose) will be hosting the Panera meetings.
Please note that the Main Library does NOT allow food or drink in their meeting rooms. However, refreshments will be served at the Northeast Branch Library meeting, and you are free to bring your own snacks. Since the staff at Panera is kind enough to let us sit there for hours on end, we ask that you please buy something (even if it's just a soda or pastry) to show your appreciation.

All of these events are listed on the Google Calendar. If you have one, you can click the link in the header of our regional page and add it to your own calendar.

Sunday, November 1st
Time: 4pm-8pm
Place: Panera Bread (101 N Blair Stone Rd: Google Map)
There will be table tents to mark our place in the restaurant; ideally we will be located near the cash register, where the plugs are. Also look for people with NaNoWriMo stickers or t-shirts.

Saturday, November 7th
Time: 1pm-4pm
Place: Main Library (200 W. Park Ave.: Google Map)
We will be meeting in the Henderson Room, which is located on the second floor, by the study area next to the fiction section. There will be a NaNoWriMo flyer on the door of the meeting room and in the lobby.

Sunday, November 8th
Time: 4pm-8pm
Place: Panera Bread; see above information for location within the restaurant.

Saturday, November 14th
Time: 1pm-4pm
Place: Main Library; once again we will be in the Henderson Room.

Sunday, November 15th
Time: 4pm-8pm
Place: Panera Bread; see above information

Saturday, November 21st
Time: 1pm-4pm
Place: Main Library; Henderson Room

Sunday, November 22nd
Time: 4pm-8pm
Place: Panera Bread; see above information

Saturday, November 28th
Time: 1pm-3:45pm
Place: Northeast Branch Library (5513 Thomasville Rd; Google Map)
We will be in the meeting room, which is located on the right as soon as you enter the lobby. Refreshments will be provided, and you are free to bring your own snacks.

Sunday, November 29nd
Time: 4pm-8pm
Place: Panera Bread; see above information

<strike>As of right now, there might NOT be a ML at the Official Write-In for Sunday, November 29th, but that may change. If you would like to go to Panera and write anyway, feel free--we've made it an official write-in to encourage people to go out and attend! :) Obviously we encourage writing adventures that take place outside of your home!</strike>

EDIT: There WILL be an ML present at the November 29th Panera Bread Write-In! Maggie will be out of town for the holidays, so Rachel will be there to cheer you all on. :)
Monday, November 30th - tentative write-in?

We're thinking about hosting a rampant race to the finish on November 30th. Would anyone be interested in attending a write-in from potentially 2pm until Panera closes?

Consider it a last ditch attempt to make goal, a chance to socialize, share novels, eat tasty food, etc! If more than Rachel and I are interested in this, then there shall be one final Race to the Finish on the 30th. :)
"trash" talk thread -- regional word wars

If you're going to gently tease our Tallahassee area participants about their word count (or lack there of) as we participate in regional word wars with Jacksonville, Florida and Adelaide, Australia, then this is the thread to do it in. :)

Happy writing, everyone, and may the wordiest region prevail! Also, don't forget about the Donation Derby!
Donating (Ideas & Incentives)

As you all probably know, NaNoWriMo is a non-profit organization that runs entirely on donations. No donations, no NaNoWriMo. So, if you enjoy the event and would like to see it flourish, I implore you to at least consider donating to the cause.
Now, I know that some people simply can't afford to donate the amounts listed in the donation station. Never fear! There are other options, which I'm going to discuss here.

1. Goodsearch
Goodsearch is a FREE search engine that donates one penny to the charity of your choice for every search. It may not sound like a lot, but think about it: how many times a day do you Google something? If everyone in the Tallahassee region used Goodsearch at least once per day during November, we could raise $2.50 per day. That would be over $75 over thirty days! In 2008, NaNoWriMo recieved nearly $4000 from Goodsearch searches alone (nearly $400 was earned through November, so I encourage everyone to use it year round as well)! Just make sure you put "The Office of Letters and Light" as your charity before you search.
Check it out. It's an easy way to contribute without even touching your budget: http://www.goodsearch.com/default.aspx

2. Sponsoring
If you have people that fully support you in your writing, you could ask them to sponsor you. You could ask friends and family to donate $10-$20 if you make the 50,000 words. More information about that can be found here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/sponsorship

3. Our Tip Jar
At every Tallahassee Write-In, we will have a piggy bank available so you can drop some change or a dollar into. At the end of NaNoWriMo, we will break open the banks and donate all of the money to NaNoWriMo in Tallahassee's name. If we manage to donate $25 or more, we will recieve donor gifts that will be handed out at the TGIO party.

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far. NaNoWriMo is such an amazing event and we want to keep it going for as long as people keep writing. :)

Virtual Midway Party!

The online kick off party was such a hit, so let's consider having a virtual midway party as well. We've got write-ins on the 14th and the 15th this weekend, but let's try having a bit of a chat on Saturday night? Whine about your novels, whine about IRC, belittle your characters and rejoice at the size of your wordcount.

Who: All of you, of course!
What: Virtual Midway Party!
When: Sunday, Nov. 15th, 9 pm
Where: http://chatnano.net/tempchats/tallahassee.html
Impromptu Write-Ins

I see some of you are using the forums already to try and arrange unofficial write-ins, and that is excellent. Both Rachel (fuzzynerds) and I (Maggie) really encourage you to use the forums for that kind of schedule arranging and organizing! It's great to see people so interested. ^.^

However, sometimes, motivation takes hold, and you realize you need to get out and about to do some writing. Occasionally, you might decide that you would like company while out in about in the area writing up a proverbial storm. That's what this thread is for.

Example: This afternoon (11/1) I'll be at the Barnes and Noble in the Tallahassee Mall to write from 1 pm until whenever. Join me if you'd like!

Example: I'm heading to Panera Bread on Blair Stone Rd. to write and I'll be there for about two hours. (11/3, 4pm)

That's all there is to it. If you find yourself heading out and about in public to write, please post it here! Who knows, someone might be watching the forums and join you, and viola, it's a write-in! (Now wasn't that easy?)

Barring rain, freezing cold, or needing to find a plug...in which case we can meet there and find somewhere else.

War of the Words!

We've issued friendly challenges to Jacksonville, Florida and Adelaide, Australia for a regional word war this November.

The premise is simple. We write, write, write, and at the end of the month, we see who has the most words in each region. If we beat either region, I'll make certificates/badges/something to pass out at the TGIO party and to post in the forums. A separate certificate will also be awarded to the region with the highest total donations.

Details are forthcoming, but it should be exciting!
Double Your Daily Word Count Day!

It's the end of Week One, and we are getting ready to go into dreaded Week Two. We are in a war with Jacksonville and Adelaide, and we have to show them who's boss. It's time for us to kick in into high gear, so I think tomorrow needs to be Double Your Daily Word Count Day. As it's after 2 AM EST time as I write this, tomorrow is actually Sunday!

What is "Double Your Daily Word Count Day", you ask? It's a new regional holiday that that's just been invented. It's a day where you write at least double your average daily word count, and thus give yourself a hefty boost to prepare for week two.

It works like this: Whatever your end-of-day word count is at the end of today (Saturday), you divide that number by 6. The result is your average daily word count, and your goal on Sunday is to write twice that many words. If your average is less than 1,667, and you are behind, then I challenge you to get to a grand total of at least 15,003 words- that's where you should be by Monday, so if you make it there by Sunday, then you will be a full day ahead! :)

Use this thread to post your magic number, the number of words you'll be writing for Sunday. Then, when you finish writing those words, post again to let everyone know that you are victorious.

There are no prizes for winning this challenge other than a virtual high-five, because this is a shoe-string operation after all. But you will have bragging rights, and you will get that warm fuzzy "Yeah, I totally won that challenge" feeling. And if you don't get that feeling, then just keep writing until you triple your daily word count. Or quadruple it.

Besides, our region could desperately use a few more words. Hint, hint! :)

(Other regions are also participating over the weekend, so take control for your words! Idea used with permission from the illustrious synthetic_jesso, Arlington, TX ML.)
Kick Off - Thank You!!

Thank you so much to everyone who came out last night for the Kick Off Party! It was a huge success, and we all had loads of fun! It was awesome meeting you all, and I hope to see most of you again at at least one or two Write-Ins and hopefully at the Thank God It's Over Party in December. I met some really made of awesome, creative, funny, interesting people at the party, and I hope you all feel the same way!
For those of you who missed it, I hope you can make it out to some of the write-ins. We have some goodies left over, so if you weren't at the Kick Off you can still have some.

I'm going to post the story we created at the event, so if you liked it, you can keep it. If you weren't at the kick off and haven't read it, please do, because it's really hilarious! It can be read here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3350115
I'm also going to make a Book Recommendation thread, because I got a LOT of recommendations for good short stories and novels, and there's no way I can remember them all. If you recommended something at the Kick Off, or if you just really love a story and think the rest of us should read it, feel free to post there once the thread is up.

Again, thank you all so much for making last night such a big success!
T'was the Night Before NaNo!

A fun little ditty written by one of the site's ML's...I thought it was cute and appropriate to share with you all!

~

'Twas the night before NaNo, when all through the house
Not a keyboard was typing, not a click of a mouse.
The stickers were hung by the writer with care,
In Hopes that a Novel, soon would be there.

The Editors were nestled, all snug in their beds,
While visions of red pens, danced in their heads.
with Chris Baty in his viking hat and I in my shirt,
All the wrimo's world wide, sat waiting to work.

When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my writing spot, to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Tore open the window, threw up the sash.

The moon was big, with a very bright glow
and it looked like a screen that had something to show.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a story and eight characters.

With a little plot arc ,so lively and round,
I knew in a moment, "My Novel - I've found!"
More rapid then eagles the chapters they came
and the story whistled and shouted and called things by name,

"Now characters, Now plot arcs, now storylines and more,
"On conflict, On turmoil, On plot twists galore.
To the top of the plot line, to November's 50 K
Now write away, write away, write away today."

As dead words before the wild month fly,
When they meet with a Muse and mount to the sky
So up to my desk top these coursers, they flew
with a slew full of ideas, and my muse too.

And then in a twinkling I heard on my desk
The smattering of words, taking one last rest.
As I drew in my hand and was turning around
Appeared, did my muse, in one single bound.

It was dressed in all words, from it's head to it's foot
and it's clothes were all tarnished with erasure gook.
It's bundle of stories were flung on it's back
And it looked like Chris Baty - What's up with that?

It's eyes how they shimmered, It's dimples how scary,
It's cheeks were all blustery, it's smile so merry.
It's droll little mouth was drawn up like an "oh"
And not a beard on it's chin, that'd be freaky, ya know?

The stump of a pencil it held tight in it's teeth,
And punctuation encircled it it's head like a wreath.
It had a bright face and a round cuppa coffee
That shook when it laughed, without ever sloshing.

It was awkward and lumpy, a right crazy old elf
And I laughed when I saw it, inspite of myself.
A wink of Its eye and a twist of Its head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

It spoke not a word, but went straight to my desk
And It looked at my blank page then said, "Surely you Jest"
Laying its fingers aside of my keys, It winked at me once,
And slid inward with ease.

It sprang on my screen, to the words it gave whistle
and away they all flew to it, like the down of a thistle
But I heard it exclaim, err it faded into the night
"Happy NaNo to all, tonight you shall write!"

Collaborative Story (written at the kick-off)

For all of you that didn't come to the kick off party, this is the story we wrote together, with each person writing one sentence at a time. I instructed everyone to look only at the sentence before the one they wrote, so no one had any idea what the whole story was about until I read it out loud at the end. Judging by this story, we obviously have some really creative people in Tallahassee!

---

Once upon a time, there was a girl who lived in fairy-land. She was kind of bored with fairy-land and it's archaic customs, though; she needed a change. This fairy-girl, you see, was an imposter on the verge of being discovered. For unbeknownst to her lover, believing her to be magical, she is nothing more than a barely sentient toaster, cleverly disguised to woo her lover with the aroma of burnt toast. Burnt toast from outer space, with space monkeys from space, performing the sacred space dance of burnt space toast, journeying through space to the planet Earth, where they went to the local arcade and played space invader. But the space monkeys ran out of tokens at the arcade, and decided to rob a liquor store. They disguised themselves as American presidents.
Much to their chagrin, Bush walked in for a six-pack of Bud. They formed a ring around him as he cracked the first beer, glaring ominously. The Egyptologists, sitting across from him, talked incessantly about the mummy court singer of about 30 years old, with Cleopatra eyes.
Suddenly, Awkward the Flying Turtle decided that this would be the best time to interrupt this court singer conversation and took a dive for the beer keg, disrupting the Egyptologist's impassioned discussion about the love-lorn mummy.
"HARK!"
"Hail and well met, good fellow!" The guard's welcoming words were contradicted by his large scimitar and intimidating gaze. He raised the scimitar in a mocking salute. The leather grip, smoothed with years of consistant use, slipped out of his sweaty fingers and landed on the floor with a dull clatter. Cursing under his breath, he knelt to retrieve it.
Disappearing in a wisp of fog, he reappeared several feet away in a tree, and a few feet wider through the middle. The wider through the middle part was most troublesome, given the need to fit through the key hole.
And then, quite suddenly - a great big pile of rocks fell down from the sky and everyone died.
THE END.

---
Kick Off Party!

To celebrate the beginning of NaNoWriMo, we will be having a KICK OFF PARTY at the end of October! Here's your basic information first, with more details following:

Date: Friday, October 30th
Time: 6:00pm
Place: Ray's Steel City Saloon (515 John Knox Rd: Google Map)

Date & Time

As said above, this will take place on October 30th, at 6pm. Since this is held at a restaurant, the activities won't start until later, as we expect that most people will order food. The official activities should be over by 8pm, though you are free to stay as long as you want to chat with new friends.
Since it's so close to Halloween, we've decided to make it a "Dress Up As One Of Your Characters" event! (We say ANY of your characters because some of you may have main characters that are opposite of your gender. Though we are not opposed to you dressing in drag!) Obviously this is optional, but Maggie and I will definitely be dressing up, and it would be awesome if a few of you decided to dress up as well. :)

Location

Ray's Steel City Saloon is located on John Knox Road, off of N. Monroe. It is right next to the Tallahassee Mall, and is very easy to find. Since it is a Friday night, it will probably be busy. If needed, the restaurant owns a dirt parking lot right across the street. If that lot is full (which is doubtful), the hotel across the street allows Ray's customers to park in their lot, as long as they don't park in front of the actual hotel.
We will be located on the patio out back. It's a great little space, with curtains in case of rain, and a small heater in case it's cold out. We will also have a waiter/waitress or two serving us.

If you decide to come to the Kick Off party, we ask that you please plan to order at least a side item or salad. Ray's has a huge variety of food, including kosher and vegetarian options. The menu can be viewed here. They have really great food, and the staff is super nice!

What To Expect

If you decide to join us for the kick off party (and we hope you will!), you will be introduced to your Municipal Liaisons for 2009. You will recieve a few goodies (including a name tag and an official NaNoWriMo sticker), and a raffle ticket.
After eating and mingling, Maggie and I will let you guys know what to expect from November. If you have a friend who is thinking about doing NaNoWriMo, but isn't sure whether they want to or not, bring them along! This portion of the evening will answer any questions and address any reservations they may have about the event.
Next up, we have some fun activities planned, including a creative writing activity, and a "Get To Know You" game. Afterwards, we will award the prizes for the raffle.

It is going to be a super fun, awesome night, and it's a great way to begin NaNoWriMo and make some new friends!

If you have any questions, let me know, and I hope to see you there!

Rachel

P.S. If you're on Facebook, RSVP! http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=151282586533&ref=nf
An FSU contender throwing my head into the ring...

Name: Angela Tarbett

Age: 27

NaNoWriMo Experience: my first year

School/Work: pursuing an MLIS at FSU

Something Interesting About Me: I am greatness personified. As such, there are too many fascinating things about me to possibly list them all, so I'll just mention by unabashed modesty.

My Novel is About: as long as you don't hold me to this: naive aristocrat's daughter from the backwaters of the fictional nation takes on evil immortal tyrant, lest he succeed in laying waste to the entire world. There's also a dragon involved... and possibly demon pirates... and I haven't ruled out a cameo by my evil cousin.

Anything Else To Add?: I will joke about inappropriate things, but I come by it naturally. My grandmother and I got to creep out one of the priests who gave my mother her last rites (she needed two). Had she been conscious, I know Mom would have approved. That should tell you a lot about my sense of humor.

Every author, however modest, keeps a most outrageous vanity chained like a madman in the padded cell of his breast.
Nano Care Packages?

Is anyone else participating in sending Nano Care Packages (http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3268008)? If so, what are you planning on sending? Any ideas for where to get things to send? Have you participated before?

I'm thinking Books-A-Million, clearance. Tons of desk time-wasters, entertaining pens... or I could just go to Wal-Mart and buy a ton of chocolate. Depends who I get paired up with. You?
Online chat!

http://chatnano.net/tempchats/tallahassee.html

This year, we are fortunate enough to have our own chat room to use during NaNoWriMo this year. It's super easy to use, and I plan to be in the chat room off and on throughout the entire month of November! I'll be using the chat room to host word wars, offer venting space, and also as a way for those not in the Tallahassee area (but still affiliated with the region) to virtually attend write-ins.

Our first major event with the chat room with be a virtual kick off party starting at 11 pm on October 31st.. Come in to meet and talk with others in the region, and from Midnight to 1 am, we'll be hosting the first official write-in of the year, complete with word wars and sprints. It's a low stress easy way to start the NaNo season right.

I do hope you'll consider joining us.

After the kickoff party on the 31st, the chat will be open 24/7--feel free to hop in and see if anyone else is on and in the chat--talk about noveling, challenge them to a word war, compare word counts--whatever suits your fancy!

Simply click on the link above to access the chat room's homepage. After clicking on the link, easy directions for joining the chat room are provided for your convenience.

Also, feel free to use this thread to plan any and all virtual write-ins you'd like to have throughout the month of November!
Welcome!

Hello, Tallahassee Wrimos! Welcome to NaNoWriMo 2009! It certainly is going to be a very exciting November!

Rachel here, one of your friendly Municipal Liaisons for this year. You will be hearing from Tallahassee's other ML, Maggie, later. :) Please feel free to add us as friends if you are so inclined. We don't bite, we promise!

For those of you who are new to NaNoWriMo, or new to the Tallahassee region, we are a friendly group of people, and we welcome you heartily! If you're new to the event, I suggest browsing around the NaNoWriMo site for information and all kinds of fun things. If you have any questions or need some help figuring out what the heck is going on here, please don't hesitate to ask.

We have many events coming up, which you can see in our regional Google Calendar, which you can view here, or in our main regional page.

Our first order of business is the KICK OFF PARTY. It will take place at Ray's Steel City Saloon on October 30th, at 6:00pm. We reserved the patio out back so that we can say goodbye to our sanity before NaNoWriMo begins, and be as rambunctious as possible while doing so. We will be playing games, giving out stickers and other fun goodies, and there will be a raffle for some special items (including homemade Writer Survival Kits and an autographed copy of Chris Baty's "No Plot? No Problem!"). Please come out and join us if you are available! We also ask that you please order at least a drink while you're there, since they have given us the back patio for free. :) [And we get our own waitor or waitress, so please don't forget to tip!]

We will have Write-Ins on Saturdays and Sundays all through November. The first three Saturday Write-Ins will take place at the Main Library, upstairs in the Henderson Room, from 1pm to 4pm. The fourth Saturday Write-In will be at the Northeast Branch Library, and will take place from 1pm to 3:45pm.
The Sunday Write-Ins will take place at Panera Bread from 4pm to 8pm.
All of the Write-In venues have free wi-fi, and while food is not allowed at the Main Library, there will be refreshments served at the Northeast Branch, and of course you are free to order food and drinks at Panera Bread [they have lots of caffeinated beverages available!]. :)
If you need your own writing music to jam to, headphones are welcomed, though we ask that you be courteous to the other writers and make sure that they aren't too loud.

I will be sending out an email with all of this information and more soon. Meanwhile, check out the other thread and introduce yourself!

Happy plotting,
Rachel
