Challenge the Fourth

Ok, the new challenge, the one we've kindly saved until nearer to the end. We're getting to end of our stories (well, some of you are - mine has barely started), so it's time for a horrible death!

Kill someone, preferably gruesomely, and share it with us before the next meet.
Regional Word War - Sign-up

Ok, it's time to muster our forces and go to war.

For those that are new or have not taken part before, the Regional Word war does pretty much what it says on the tin - the British regions are competing against each other for best average wordcount. It's just a bit of fun, to help encourage more writing. There's nothing like a bit of competition to get the words flowing.

Last year we did quite well (our best ranking to date, I think), so let's do even better this year!

The rules are laid out in a seperate thread, and you can ask any questions there. This thread is solely for sign-up. If you want to take part, respond in this thread.

All are welcome, but as this is a competition obviously you should only really take part if you're at least confident that you'll hit 50k. Dropping out is of course possible if things go awry - the rules for this are in the other thread.

So, soldier, are you man (or woman) enough to join up and fight for your region?

Semper apices!
Regional Word War - Rules

2009 Rules:
Eligibility
You must live within the UK or Ireland, and be relatively close to the region you wish to represent.
Sign-ups
Your ML will provide a "Word War Sign Up” thread on your local forum to track word count. Participants will post ONCE in the Word War Sign Up thread by 8pm on 10th November stating that they wish to participate. There is a minimum team size of five participants. If less than five people sign-up to take part, your ML has the option of joining forces with another region in order to increase the team size. If your ML is unwilling or unable to do so and you still wish to take part, you may go direct to another region and ask to join their team, but please give your ML time to arrange for the entire team to join another one before you do this.

The Regional Word War
You must update your word count every two days, on the even numbered days of the month, by 8pm. If you are unable to update your count, contact your ML. During the last partial week (26th –– 29th Nov), you must update your word count daily, by 8pm. If this isn't possible, contact your ML immediately.
If you do not update your word count on four consecutive occasions (8 days) it will be assumed that you have given up and you will be removed from the war (unless you already have more than 50k). If you know that you’re going to be away and won’t be able to update, let your ML know so that we can prevent this automatic removal. (The final date that non-updaters will be removed is the 24th Nov, after this date, all surviving participants will remain in the competition.)
You must input your final (verified) word count by midnight on 30th November. After midnight, you will no longer be able to update your count.
Scoring
You may drop out of the Regional Word War at any time up to 8pm on 20th November without affecting your region's count. If you do not drop out by messaging either myself or your ML, you will be in for the remainder of the competition, NO MATTER WHAT!
If, as a result of automatic elimination or voluntary removal, your team falls below five members, your ML will be given 48 hours to arrange to join another team (this may be extended slightly on negotiation with myself, this is the first time we've had this rule and I'm not sure how it's going to work yet) after which the team will be disqualified. Up to 8pm on the 24th of November, any remaining team members who wish to continue to take part can join one of the other teams (with that team's permission). After this deadline all teams will be fixed.

During the Regional Word War there will be a regularly updated leader board on an external web site. I'll post a link to this board to each competing region as soon as I've confirmed it.
Only the official word count from the "Word War Sign Up" threads on the NaNoWriMo web site will be considered when computing the final score.

After midnight on 30th November, I will ask the other MLs from competing regions (or their designated representatives) to verify the figures before declaring a winner.

Results
There will be two prizes:
The city/region with the highest average word count.
The city/region with the highest proportion of winners from the starting participants.
The MLs will compare results, and when all regions agree, the results will be posted on the NaNo boards.

Banter
Participants are encouraged to engage in good-natured banter with participants from other regions in the various Word War Banter threads. Banter should remain good-natured and within the bounds of good-sportsmanship. The use of 'smileys' in messages is actively encouraged.

Our God-like powers
MLs decide what "good-sportsmanship" means.
We reserve the right to remove folks from the competition for any violation of the rules and guidelines listed above.
MLs are the final authority in any dispute or question about the rules.

Trophies
Each team member receives a personalised winner's certificate, plus goodies to be determined...

----------
Weekly Meetings

Right then. Weekly meetings.

The Plan: informal, A few drinks, some creative discussion, venting of frustrations! Meet your fellow NaNoers and share your most recent scribblings. We'd love it if you printed out some of your work to hand around, just don't expect to get it back totally free from beer/coffee stains :D

The Challenges: Every week either SheBit or myself will set a mini challenge, usually asking you to work something into whatever you happen to be writing that week. We'll post the challenge as a new topic on the discussion board.
If you want to take part, just post the short section of your novel that meets the challenge as a reply in the challenge thread. We'll print them all out and chose the one that we think deserves a prize. This might be because it makes us laugh, is well written, or possibly contains words that SheBit doesn't know (this almost NEVER happens). The winner gets a prize! Yay!
If whatever we suggest just doesn't fit in with your story (or if you're on a roll and don't want to take part in our silliness), don't worry about it. It's just meant to be a bit of fun, and could possibly be used as an anti-writer's block device.

The Quizzes: At each meeting there will be some kind of devious quiz to test you all on... erm... stuff. Last year we had quizzes on grammar (oooh that SheBit, she's a picky one!), movie adaptations, and matching main characters to authors. There are also prizes for the winer of each quiz, double yay!

The Dates: We're following last year's format, trying to have a meeting on different days of each week so that people with weekly commitments on certain days can come and see our lovely faces at least once!

Launch Party- Friday 30th October, The Sanctuay Cafe, 51-55 Brunswick St. Hove. 7:30pm onwards.

Week 1 Meeting- Friday 6th November, The George, 5 Trafalgar St. Brighton, 7:30pm onwards.

Week 2 Meeting- Wednesday 11th November, TBA, 7:30pm onwards.

Week 3 Meeting- Thursday 19th November, The Sanctuay Cafe, 51-55 Brunswick St. Hove. 7:30pm onwards.

Week 4 Meeting- Tuesday 24th November, The George, 5 Trafalgar St. Brighton, 7:30pm onwards.

TGIO Party- Tuesday 1st December, TBA, 7:30pm onwards.
----------

Greetings from your MLs

Greetings Nanoers!

Those of you who took part last year will probably remember us and hopefully didn't get too annoyed with our MLing skills, because we're back in charge again this year. I'd say 'back by popular demand', but it's more like 'back because no one else wanted the job'.

Just as last year, we'll be having a kick-off party on 30/10/09 (time and place to follow), followed by weekly meets, each one on a different night of the week and involving quizes and drinking. Then we'll finish off the month with a big TGIO party on 1/12/09.

We're actually going to be away for a few days in the middle of the month (because we decided that writing 50k and running meetings wasn't enough of a challenge, so we also needed to be out of the country for a week and a half), but we'll have a deputy running things while we're gone, and I'll only miss one meeting.

I plan to also set you regular (or irregular, if the mood takes me) challenges, just to keep your brains working.

So, here's to another year of NaNoWriMo!

Your MLs

Word War Info - Updated 21 Nov.

Hi all,

This thread is primarily for me to post info about the Word War to all competitors, so it's being cross-posted to all the regions taking part. If you want to make any comments, however, feel free. :-)

ETA: Here's the link to the leader board: http://www.annelyle.com/projects/scoreboard.html

The regions currently signed up are:

Birmingham
Brighton
Cambridge
Darlington
Devon & Cornwall
Essex
Gloustershire
Lancaster & Cumbria
Leicester
London
Manchester
Newcastle
Norfolk
Oxfordshire
York & Leeds
Dublin
Edinburgh
Glasgow
Eng: Elsewhere
Scot: Elsewhere
Wales

Only one region has given a definite No, so we may get a lot more before the 10th. Here's hoping. :-)

All those regions that are signed up should have a Banter thread, so feel free to go over and give them hell (but in a nice way). :-)

There may be a slight delay in the War starting up, as we're reliant on the site API working and the site is notoriously slow during the first few days of Nano, plus we're running it in a slightly different way this year and I'm not sure what problems will crop up because of that. In addition, one of Anne's cats is very seriously ill at the moment, so she may not have time to work on it. I'll be in touch with her and will let all the relevant MLs know if we have to make other arrangements at all. I'll also be in touch when I know the URL of the leader board. :-)

----------
Lottie
I'll sleep when I'm dead.

Europe :: England :: Birmingham-West Midlands

Is anyone going to use this? I'm not entirely sure whether I want to, because I don't get the logicstics of it. Do we give them our manuscript, and they send us a proof? Or do we have to give them a manuscript and a book cover? Or do they create a book cover?

Can anyone help?
Writers' Circle

MB, SB and I have been talking about setting up a writers' circle. I miss my old one in Portsmouth, which was why I suggested it, and I shall tell you why.

It wasn't like your average membership-fee-plus-meeting-charge / writing-exercises-and-prizes / grammar-challenges type thing, etc etc. It was purely a time once a fortnight (though we're suggesting once a month for this one) when we would get together, pay a pound each to help with the hire of the room - no membership fee - and if you had something to read you could read it and get feedback on it. That was all. Totally informal, no lah-di-dah-we-have-a-published-writer-at-the-helm type thing. Just writers wanting feedback on their work and getting it, then either taking it on board as a good idea (or several good ideas) or preferring instead to ignore it and think all the advice was crap anyway. Then we'd head off to the pub because we only had the room for about an hour and a half, and we would continue, in most cases, talking about writing.

So - we were wondering if anyone in the area is up for monthly meetings. No money involved, at least as yet - we're thinking we should meet up in a pub (a quietish one so we can hear ourselves read and think) - as we'd end up in one afterwards anyway and that way there's no fee involved. So long as at least a few of us bought a drinkie or two, I'm sure the bar staff (and especially the landlord) would have no problem with this particular arrangement.

The beauty of a writers' circle is that, informal or otherwise, it gives you a kick up the bum, writing-wise. You don't want to be the only one who turns up each month not having written anything, after all (at least, that's how I felt in Portsmouth), so it gives you a push when you need one.

Let us know if you think you might be interested.

Cheers,

Out of curiosity - how old is everyone here?

I was wondering what the age differences were in the Brighton NNWM groups. I'd be interested to know if anyone's around my age as well... I'm feeling a little out of my depth in amidst the "maturity" and "sophistication".
Help with Greek

As I've barely done much forum stuff and even less in the rest of the Nano Forum world, I figured I'd ask here first.

In my story there's a Greek barista who turns up, confusing the cast who have been abandoned and alone in an airport for three days already. He knows no English and they know no Greek.
I've gone through, highlighting his dialogue in bright blue so I remember to change it, but I was wondering if any of you guys knew Greek, or knew someone who could translate these to Greek. Sadly, my Greek friend is incommunicado currently.

There may be a couple more lines other than these, as I've a scene to add somewhere there, once I'm done with the rest. This is the bulk of them:

"What are you doing here? Did you dig that hole?"

“Are you tourists then? Do you know who dug that?”

“You don’t speak Greek? Really? Wow. They have some lazy tourists here. They don’t pay me enough to care about holes or whatever.”

“What have you people done to this place?!” “You’re not supposed to make such a mess! What must the cleaners think?”

“Please, no one come inside until I’m done opening up.”

“I don’t speak English. Sorry.”

“I still don’t speak it, no matter how slow you talk.”

“No! Get away from there! I’ll be fired if you hurt yourself.”

“Remember when I said I can’t speak English? That’s still the case.”

“What?”

“Okay, I’m going to the bathroom. None of you go behind the counter or do anything weird. You know, weirder than you’re already acting. Thanks.”

“Hey! Get away from there!”

“There are dangerous things behind the counter. You could have hurt yourself.”

“Are you okay?”

Any help would be awesome.
When 'research' goes a bit too far...

Not only does writing a novel in a month make you go totally insane, it is also dangerous.

So my MC currently has, for lack of a better explanation, a head injury. And I have never had a head injury, so I was wondering what it would be like.

Today, I gave myself a concussion. There were, in fact, two seperate incidents that combined to give me said concussion. Both of them were stupid, neither of them were on purpose, and one of them has left me temporarily disfigured in the facial area.

My point is: don't think to much about the bad things that you do to your characters. It is my belief that they have some kind of pact with Fate and Karma, and they will make you regret said bad things, and possibly scar you without a cool explaination for said scar.

Could this be considered Extreme Novel Writing or something? ;)
Open Office users

Just a quick note for you all:
I decided to check that my word count was the same on the nano counter as it was in OO. Turns out, it's not. It's looking like quotation marks (") count as an extra word. We're finding that

Quote:
"Today
scores as two in Open Office. So everyone check that your word count is what you think it is: I'd hate it for people to lose out because of weird counting errors.

I know, I'm terribly behind, but I just hit 30k. I was going to yesterday, but I injured my wrist and wasn't sure I would be able to participate any more this month. However, a day off combined with damn stubbornness to keep going and I'm still in the game. Now, I have less than 2k to do each day until the end and damnit, I'm going to. Who's with me?
Sunday write-in

Out of interest, is anyone planning to come to the write-in this afternoon/evening?

I ask this for the simple reason that, in view of the foul weather out there, I'm feeling a serious disinclination to leave the house (else I might get picked up by the wind and blown away, Wizard of Oz style). If people are still planning to go to the Sanctuary then I will do my duty as an ML and stagger over there, but if other people are feeling the same way about the horrible weather then we could give today's write in a rain (or should that be wind?) check.

I'd be happy to make up for it by holding a pre-meeting write-in on tuesday - I believe the George does have wi-fi, though it's a little less reliable than the wireless as the Sanctuary.

Let me know asap please, so that I know whether I have to leave the house in an hour or not :)

Challenge the Thirdest - Impossibanimals

Right.
The 'Bit and the 'Biscuit (which would be a great name for a pub) gave me permission to set the next challenge. You know the drill by now (presumably), I say something, you try and work it into your novels, post a short excerpt here, and then it gets judged in time for next week's meeting. The judging will be done by the Moose and She (not quite as good a name for a pub, though almost). On their return.
Except that's a lie, because I think only SheBit is back in time, so it'll be here. Feel free to tailor your responses to her particular foibles if you so wish (and if you know her foibles, which are many).

So, the challenge:

This week I want to see Animals doing Impossible things.

There's a bit of wiggle room there on what you consider Impossible, be it impossible for that particular animal, or just entirely impossible, I leave the interpretation to you.

So post your excerpts here, or if you prefer to keep it unfriendly for family viewing, pm them to SheBit (there are, alledgedly, rules against that, it's why there's a sun on the local forum page...that's not just because it's obviously always sunny in Brighton *grumblegrumble*).
So there you go.
What am I writing about?

I'm finding it really tough this year - the hardest going it's been. But I finally wrote something I sorta actually liked a bit, and decided to post it as my novel excerpt. (Yes, go and read it! LOL)

But I, er, [searches for polite language] bungled. And accidentally pasted it over my synopsis. The novel has already mutated beyond recognition, but now I don't know even know what I'm supposed to be writing any more. Wah!! [<-- That's me crying like a baby.]

Oh, well, that's it for today. Other commitments for this evening. And tomorrow, of course, I mustn't miss the next Brighton meet-up, having missed two already, so it's looking like another mega-catching-up weekend...

Dead ends - Help please!

Right.

I've stalled. Completely and utterly.

I've not written a word (apart from a misery laden blog post, which doesn't count) in almost three days. I've eaten up the healthy buffer that I'd built up, and I'm stuck.

Basically, I think I might even need plot advice. I just don't know where to take it.

So here's a rough synopsis of what's going on (this is as much to clarify things in my head as it is to ask for comments, but say what you will, criticism and compliments welcome (though I don't take compliments well). Basically I'm just thinking out loud here. Hope you don't mind.

So right. We started off with two protagonists, Saffi and Dogstar, and a barman, Albe.

Dogstar was asleep at the bar dreaming of building a woman on the titanic, when suddenly he's woken up to find that the woman in his dreams (Saffi) has just been shoved through the door of the pub by a 'woman in black' type referred to throughout the text as 'the suit'. Dogstar buys her a drink at Albe's insistence, Saffi gets angry about this presumption and calls Dogstar names. Albe tries to explain why Dogstar is like how he is and sorta wins Saffi around while Dogstar is asleep again. he wakes up, they chat for a bit and then the pub explodes and fills with gilded Rhino soldier robot monsters (of some sort).
Obviously.
Albe gets a head wound and (probably) dies. Dogstar and Saffi make a run for it. They decide that they need to stick together, and Dogstar leads them to a safehouse, a cellar underneath a local church (he's friends with a local priest).

We flip perspective, and we're following, in two contrasting stories, a tough sassy news reporter called Jensine, and the experimental Saxophonist she's been sent to interview, Dakks. As Jensine makes her way up to Helsingor (where the others are) to interview Dakks, we discover that Dakks is planning on making a final recording. The sound of him hanging himself. Lots of character stuff is added to both of them, and tension mounts as Jensine arrives to try and resuscitate the just hung Dakks. We leave them just as Jensine keels over from a headwound inflicted during the effort to get Dakks down from his noose.

We also at this point flip to our antagonist, an undead lich king called Koschei (his undeadness isn't revealed yet, but we can see he's evil, and that something weird has been going on with him is already hinted at). He's running a network of businesses that have induced a critical economic failure throughout Europe, focussing on Denmark. All his acquisitions in the country have failed, even as he moves his headquarters there. This is apparently all according to plan.

Meanwhile, storms are brewing out to see around the Danish island of Sjaelland (Zealand) where all of this is taking place.

We then return to Dogstar and Saffi, and this is where I start to get unhappy with everything.

Basically, the two talk, and we find out that Saffi's Dad had been investigating Koschei's businesses (though we haven't yet connected the name to the businesses, it's fairly obvious for the reader) and particularly his take over of the port. Saffi's dad got killed, and Saffi took up the investigation. 'The suit' had been rabble rousing down at the docks, leading to a strike scheduled today. Saffi then followed her back to Helsingor (Elsinore) castle, where she gets knocked out (and eventually dumped back into the opening of the novel). But not before she sees that 'the suit' appears to have an army of green eyed supernatural beings, whom Dogstar spotted breaking the picket on the docks that morning. The Priest interrupts to say that people have come to the church looking for them. They run into secret underground tunnels, on his word, he says that above ground, everything's gone nuts. The internet, phone, telly and radio have all gone silent, and people have surprisingly rapidly assumed apolcalypse is imminent.

We learn more about this chaos through a local shop keeper's disapproval of everyone else's silliness. The stockpiling hordes suddenly thin as they spot (and some of them get eaten) the huge evil green eyed wolf that is blatantly about to eat poor Mrs Persson.

I then had a little vignette of Dogstar and Saffi running through the tunnels towards some special mystical place that Dogstar has underneath the castle. I don't know what he's got there, or what's going to happen, but he's talking about mythology and destiny and them being able to sort all this out. He seems to know something big about everything.

Then an interlude explaining the Norse creation myth of Sjaelland, which was stolen from Sweden by a goddess with an Ox. She pinched half a kingdom and dragged it to the North sea as a gift for Denmark. (look up the Gylfanning if you want more detail...I think I've spelt that wrong).

And that's where I've left off.

So what's the problem?
Well...firstly, I feel like Dogstar and Saffi's plot is hammering forward at breakneck speed, which is too fast. Meanwhile, Jensine and Dakks are developing as really rounded characters (which is nice, and something that D&S still aren't) but are nowhere near the plot. They're the ones who noticed the storm...but otherwise they're utterly out of synch. Also I have no idea how I'm going to make the two intertwine now that D&S are racing towards their own conclusion miles ahead of schedule.

Secondly, and this is perhaps more of a problem. is that bit where I say Dogstar 'seems to know something big about everything'. Because he may...but I haven't a clue.

I mean. I know that Koschei and the suit are doing something nasty on the docks. This has something to do with the storm, which is all something to do with him stealing the island (as foreshadowed by the creation myth). But I don't have the slightest clue why he is doing this. I don't know why he's doing this, or what his end goal is. I mean. Why steal an island? I've implied that the whole thing is prophesied, but how the hell do I do a prophecy revelation when I don't know what's going to happen.

Thirdly, I just burnt my dinner. Which probably means this post is a bit too long.

Thanks for letting me vent. To be honest, I think I'm getting some ideas already, so this was definitely useful.

But I still do need help with the storming of the brain.

What do people think? (Again, I have no problem with brutality, and am aware I'm writing a weird mash up of loads of different things that will probably never appeal to anyone apart from me, so feel free to be rude, you may as well, if you're complimentary I probably won't believe you).

Right. time to eat some burnt dinner.

What's the weather like overthere in sunny Brighton / Hove / elsewhere?

I'm at my parents in Petersfield (Hampshire) & we appear to be slap bang in the middle of a hurricane. It's all rather exciting ...

I am stuck. I made a chat room.
The password is 50k.
This is so that we feel horrendously guilty every time we enter it and instead go back to our novels.

This is a very bad idea, possibly one of my worst ever.

Do not join this chat room!
