Howdy Ho Red Hots!

As you all know, in just a few short hours we shall begin the battle for our novels. As is tradition here at National Novel Writing Month, we as a region chose to go to word war!!!!

OORAH OORAH OORAH!

What is a word war you ask? Simple. We as a region choose to use our word counts as our weapon. This is a battle for epic proportions. Every word that every Michigan::Flint Red Hot Writer writes, and adds to their word count is a GIANT STEP towards EPIC VICTORY.

Normally regions battle one another. Active writers words counts in one region verses active writers word counts in the other region.

However.......... we are no normal Region.

Red Hot Writers are TOTALLY HOT....... This is a known fact, and the basis for this word war.

Chris Baty We Declare War on YOU!!

This year, in our bid for world domination, We, the Red Hot Writers of UNITED STATES::MICHIGAN::FLINT throw down the glove and we throw it down at Chris Baty's feet.

The war is simple - we war with the founder of NaNoWriMo himself!

By November 30th, we vow that our collective word count, averaged down; will exceed Mr. Baty's, thus ensuring us victory.
How it will work:

We will take the collective word count, divide it by the number of active writers from UNITED STATES::MICHIGAN::FLINT and average it down to a Single Novel. For example if 13, active Red Hot Writers log a collective total of 150,000 words during the month of November, that averages down to a singular novel word count of 11,538 words. <--- That 11,538 words must meet or exceed Chris Baty's final word count for us to be victorious.

WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS!!!

Chis Baty, prepare. Our assault begins in mere hours. We the Red Hot Writer Warriors of United States::Michigan::Flint declare War upon you sir.

May NaNo have mercy on your soul!!!!

Virtual Write In - TONIGHT @ 7:00pm - ?

Howdy Ho Red Hots!!!

Tonight and every Tuesday night from now until November 30th, Michigan::Flint will be hosting a virtual, cyber write-in. You can find the chatroom we use by clicking this link: http://chatnano.net/tempchats/flint.html <-- this link will take you directly to the chat room entry page where you will find instructions on how to enter chat!

Now before we start our first Cyber Write In, there are a couple points to address:

First, this chat room is G Rated ONLY....... Period. G-rated means completely G rated. not even innuendos please.

Second, if you know the personal information of a fellow Red Hot - such as phone numbers or addresses, etc - do not give them out without permission. Let's be sure we keep each other safe.

Third, have fun and be respectful!

Fourth, NO - the words you type in chat are not part of your 50K word count for your novel

Now onto tonight's format.

As you enter chat you will note that every person already in chat will be listed in the sidebar. Please log in using your NaNoWriMo User Name - so you are easily identifiable to fellow Red Hots.

Don't hesitate to say hi to the crowd, or discuss things as you wish, but please remember - chat moves very fast. if you ask a question, allow for slower typist to respond before moving on please?

After the first 30 minutes of free chat, I will step up and announce the first word war of the night. Upon seeing that all writers are ready, I will inform chat that the war is on. Each of you in chat will then cease chatting and write !!!! At the beginning of the word war, you will know if we are writing for ten, fifteen, or twenty minute increments. At the end of the alloted time, once again everyone is free to chat away after revealing their word count.

Should you choose not to participate in a word war, that is fine, however i am going to ask that during word warring times, the chat room remains silent (except for incoming chatters,who i will greet and let now what is up) until the war is over.

In between word wars we will be having chat and that will be great time to ask for help, ideas or share some of your nano experience with others.

It's that time of year again, the time where we gather around our writing tools and await to write our glorious novels. It's amazing that going into our 11th year of National Novel Writing Months, NaNoWriMo is still free.......

Part of the reason this great 30 days of literary abandon is free is donations. while The HQ staff work tirelessly to garner grants throughout the year to pay for the expenses of NaNoWriMo, without donations.....we'd be paying to torture our writer souls. Every dollar donated goes to further our causes. And as an official 501.3c Not for Profit organization, National Novel Writing Month needs your donations.

It's not just a Hallmark holiday, anymore!

Yeah, I know it's on the front page, but I'd still like to extend a personal and public thanks to Eensybeensyspider, caffeinatedelf and leianajade.

I'm a terrible introvert, and I'm not one for going out in public and meeting new people. I'll go out on a limb here and say that there are probably more people who post on these boards or even show up *gulp* to the write-ins who are the same way. But you three have made it easy to attend events. I've never felt the least bit uncomfortable coming to the write-ins and meeting new people, and that's a big deal to an introvert!

So, before this starts to sound like sucking up, thanks guys! You've opened up a whole new aspect of writing to me, and I'm grateful! Dr. Pepper all around. :)

Hi, my fantastic Red Hots!

Every year, there are plenty of our writers who have transportation issues from time to time. Sometimes they can ask for rides, and sometimes they don't know who to ask and so they don't.

This thread is a place for:
- People who need rides, to post what writein they want to make, and their location for pickup and dropoff
- People who can give rides, to post what writeins they can give rides to, and how far they can go for picking up and dropping off

DISCLAIMER:
We, your MLs, are not responsible for any of you agreeing to help with gas, or not helping with gas. That is completely between the ride-offerer and the ride-needer. So make sure you have that conversation up front so that nobody is left feeling taken advantage of!

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS:
If you need a ride, post it here. If you can give a ride, post it here.

Please make sure you post what ways you can be contacted about it!

Once you find someone to connect with, use their contact info and see if a ride can be arranged.

FINAL WORD:
If rides don't work out and you end up not being able to make a writein, don't feel bad. I've been the ML for three years now and I've missed way more writeins than I wanted to; it's not the end of the world! This is also one of the reasons we will have virtual writeins using our awesome new chat room.

Feel free to Nanomail either Cylithria or myself if you need to. We may or may not feed your email to the Red Hot Nano Monster. ;)

A little bit of encouragement!

We're nearing the end of week 1. The new car smell of our novels is starting to wear off, and we're realizing that maybe we were crazy to decide to do this. Life didn't quite take the backseat you told it to, maybe something unexpected has come up.

Well, I just wanted to take a minute to tell you all that you are doing *fantastic!* I am so proud of everyone in this region. Just this week alone, we've written over 460,000 words! That is incredible.

Is this whole process easy? No. Some days, we don't have the time, or the words get stuck in our head. But each one of us has written more words creatively this week than a lot of people will ever do! You're all doing amazingly well, and the weekend is just about here now (hurrah!).

Keep plugging away at those words. Find someone and do some 15 minute word sprints. You can do it. Your three illustrious MLs believe in you.

In particular, if there is anything I can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask! I may not have a good answer, but if I have to I'll make one up. ;)

Creative triggers?

Canix has mentioned having certain things trigger bursts of creativity, so I'm curious as to whether anyone else has anything like that. Tonight is D&D night, so I won't have the huge block of time I feel like I need to hit my target today. I had a sprint before work, and I'll have another at lunch and one before D&D (and maybe another after). I've been averaging around 400 words per sprint, but I'd like to raise that. Any thought on how to make that happen?

Writing Habits - What do you need to succeed?

What time of day works best for you/do you actually get to write at that time?
What writing conditions are most suitable for your writing style?
Do you need your own area, etc?

I've been thinking about stuff like this lately. Since I started writing in high school, I've been a night writer. If I could write from 11 pm - 3 am, that worked best for me. I even indulged myself in stuff like this last year, but I found myself dragging too badly during the day, and I just wasn't functioning very well on that schedule. So this year, I'm trying a different approach. I'm getting up around the time Stanman has to leave for work (5:45 am) and writing early in the morning. Today that worked really well for me, because I got my writing done and then I had time to be productive. So this is totally making me re-think how I approach writing.

To answer my other two questions, I tend to write with music. I love instrumental soundtracks, but if I feel like the words or mood of the song fits the scene, other music is fine too. I can write with other distractions like people and tv, but I don't count on it to be my best work. Don't really have my own space, either. This morning it was in bed. :)

So what works best for you guys? Have you had a set pattern for a long time, or are you just finding one now?

It's NaNo rough, but ... the Were-Snails officially exist!

Excerpt from "Hide Me (Hideaway Inn)":

Back to being her usual whirlwind of energy, Marie burst through the office door already talking up a storm without knowing for sure if Amanda was in yet or not. Several of her words penetrated the sleep fog that Amanda was in. Words like: Slime, creepy, strange, snails, unnatural.

Amanda sat up, rubbing her eyes. She said groggily, “Slow down. What or who is arriving? And what are they bringing?”

Marie took a deep breath then quickly repeated what she had been saying when she had come in to the office, “The were- snails are coming. They commissioned a miniature replica of the inn, identical to the Hideaway, down to the furniture. Although, I do not know if they know about the piano. Hm. I wonder if they will add that. Anyway, they said the Hunters or something like that are after them. They want to come to the Hideaway for sanctuary.”

“The Hunters respect our laws at the Hideaway. They hate it, but they respect it. They know we have the blessing of the Gods, and that all the magical community comes here to be safe.” Amanda was starting to realize just how serious things were getting outside of the safety of the inn. She wondered if maybe the notes were warnings from a Hunter, maybe it really did go back to Arabelle.

“What is with the miniature version of the inn though? That is just creepy.”

Amanda shook her head, trying to hold back the laughter. “They are were- snails. That means they are small creatures. I suspect the miniature version of the inn will be where they will spend most of their time, so they avoid being stepped on by other guests. I will need to find a safe spot for them to put the miniature where it will not disturb the other guests, and the were- snails will not be disturbed either.”

“I still say it is unnatural, Amanda. Were- snails? That is just, odd.” Marie said.

“You have been a part of the magical community for how long, and you still find things unnatural?” Amanda gave in to the laughter.

“I do not find most things unnatural. I take it all in stride. But seriously, snails?” Marie shuddered.

Amanda crossed over to her closet to see if she had any spare clothes stored there. Her voice was slightly muffled as she spoke from inside the closet, “You would be surprised just how much magic those little creatures contain. It is good that they are not our size, they would be too powerful, unstoppable.”

Marie moved to the office door and called back into the room, “Still. It is snails.” She shut the door behind her as she left.

My husband and I have been house hunting, and we found a house we really like for a real good price.

3 bedroom, 3 bath, large living room, kitchen, dining room, breakfast nook, bonus room off the 2 car garage, partially finished basement, 1.3 acres, etc. 1650 sq ft. New windows, new carpet, new roof, just about new everything (they remodeled in the last 4 years). also has a whole-house generator. and closets! we will have a coat closet finally! (yes, that's right, i'm excited about having a coat closet!)

They were asking 144,900.

Last week on friday, we made an offer. The sellers counter-offered. Today, we accepted. 142,000 and seller pays half the closing costs.

/gulp. We just signed our lives away!

But in 30-45 days, we will be officially closed on the house, then another 30 days after that and we should be moving in to our new home.

Our current house is going up for sale soon, once we take care of a couple things here.

Now I'm too nervous/panicked/etc to write. So much to think about, so much to do. I have to go though what we have here, decide what we're keeping, what we're selling/giving to goodwill, and what we're throwing away. need to pack up the stuff that isnt needed immediate (i.e. all my crafts, most of my books, etc).

Brain Food?

After 3 hours of sitting at the computer and drawing a blank for what to write today, of all the things to get me going....It was pickles. Pickles and M&M's!

I would never think of pickles and chocolate as brain food during anything but NaNo. It brings out extra weirdness in me.

How to Update Your Word Count

Howdy Ho Red Hots! It's November 1st and we are at war with Chris Baty and Nashville Tennessee. From here on out when you get a chance take a moment and update your word count so we can watch the smack downs happen.......

Taken directly from NaNoWriMo's FAQ Page:

You can update your word count by entering your total cumulative word count in the field on the top of your screen and hitting "update". You can also use the novel info module to update your word count.

The word count module (and other novel info like title, genre, synopsis, and cover art) is in your profile page.

To find it, go to My NaNoWriMo in the main menu, then click "Edit Novel Info".

You have two options here:

Word Count: Simply enter your total cumulative word count (no punctuation please, just numbers) in this box, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click submit.
Word Count Validator: Copy the entire contents of your novel, and paste it into this box.
Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click submit. Our word count robots will count your words, then delete the file unseen by human eyes. We don't keep a copy of your novel anywhere on our site.

This option may be greyed out during times of high traffic. During those times, just update your count manually. After November 25th, the word count validator can be used to validate your novel and claim winner status.

All methods of updating your word count will overwrite the previous entry in the database. If you enter the incorrect word count, simply update it again with the correct one.

Should you run into an error telling you it is not time yet to begin updates, this means you did not set your time on your user profile. Simply go to My NaNoWrimo>>Edit User Settings and scroll down to time zone box.

Time to crank out our words folks. This is for the gold - the bragging rights to claim you not only are a RED HOT WRITER - but you out wrote (collectively)The Great and Illustrious Chris Baty himself!!!!!

Update Word Counts. IT matters!!!!

How I have started,

I started my novel from the basis of almost an interview. No ways in which to describe the way in which things are said. Nothing.
Almost like an author and character Q&A.
I have a plot, characters, a few hard roads for this character.
I know his story, but I'm letting HIM tell it. No grammar. No quotations, just him. Nice and raw.

How have you guys started?
