Virtual Night of Writing Dangerously

If you guys are looking for a little help boosting your word count and you have access to AIM chat rooms (through AIM, Trillian, or whatever), there will be a Night of Writing Dangerously held in AIM chats today (Sunday the 22nd) from 3pm to 10pm MST. The chat room name will be NanoDangerously.

They will be hosted by a Livejournal writing sprints community, and they'll have prizes and fun chatting and, of course, sprints for all 7 hours! Sprints, if you are not aware, are timed bursts of writing, usually for 10, 15, or 20 minutes. It's a great way to stay focused and have some fun (my word count may be evidence of the power of sprints - I wouldn't be this far along without them.)

If you don't know how to join chat rooms on AIM, just IM me (screen name: skepanie) and I can send you an invite. If you try to join and the room is full, they will also be running the event in the rooms NanoDangerously2 and NanoDangerously3.

Hope to see some of you there! :)
Some Fun Stats for Colorado!

I got a little bored tonight, so I did some math (and for those of you who know me, you know what that means...)

(these are as of 11 PM Nov 14)

Denver has 588 writers, 8,304,158 words with an average of 14,122 per writer.
Boulder has 220 writers, 3,051,949 words with an average of 13,872 per writer,
COS has 216 writers, 3,031,460 words with an average of 14,034 per writer,
Ft. Co has 179 writers, 2,791375 words with an average of 15,594 per writer,
CO Else has 108 writers, 1,414,377 words with an average of 13,096 per writer,
Durango has 49 writers, 757,151 words with an average of 15,329 per writer,
Grand J has 42 writers, 663,444 words with an average of 15,796 per writer,
Greeley has 37 writers, 515,121 words with an average of 13,922 per writer.

This give Colorado a total of 1,439 writers. Our total state word count is 20,523,035 with an average 14,262 words per writer!

THAT'S OVER 410 NOVELS ALREADY!

Just thought you might like to know...

(writers are counted by home region, not by affiliated regions, so only writers homed are counted for each region--)
Places to write

I was wondering what everyone's favorite places to write (outside their home) are. I know we're all big coffee shop fans, and my friends and I recently went on a "coffee shop tour of Greeley/Evans." To our surprise, there were many more coffee shops than we thought; to our dismay, most of them close ridiculously early. Anyway, here's a list of some what we visited [excluding Starbucks, which doesn't count in my mind].

+Margie's Java Joint - 10th Ave and 16th St - closes at 7 (at least on Mondays)

+Your Place Coffee - 2308 W. 17th St. (in the strip near Walgreen's) - Open till 9 p.m., great atmosphere, AND they have BUBBLE TEA (I've been looking for Bubble Tea in Greeley FOREVER) http://www.yourplacecoffee.com

+Deja Brew - 818 31st, Evans (weird location for a coffee shop, but I've heard they're good) - closes at 6 p.m. except Sat. (9 p.m.)

+The Buzz Coffee and Gelato - 1923 59th Ave - Their website says they close at 9, but I was there once and they closed at 7, so... but they have good coffee and GELATO (another thing I was excited to find in Greeley) http://www.thebuzzcoffeeandgelato.net

+The Coffee Shop next to Morgan Floral (I have no clue what its name is) - 23rd Ave and Reservoir Rd. - You have to really LOOK for this place, it's pretty hidden. You'll see the yellow "Great Coffee" sign out front. They close super early (like 5 or 6) but the place is really cute and cozy, and the coffee is good.

There are other coffee shops in Greeley, I'm sure, so if you know of any, go ahead and add them! Also add other places you like to write (I LOVE diners, truck stops, parks, libraries, etc)
Greeley vs. Fort Collins Word War!

Hello, brave writing warriors! Another November is lurking just around the corner. It's almost time to embark on a crazy, sleep-deprived mission towards that 50,000 word finish line. However, November is about more than just writing a novel. It's a chance to show Fort Collins who's who.

For the past few years we have taken on Fort Collins in an epic battle for the title of Wordiest City. Minus the actual title as we haven't done that before, but now's the time to start! Feel free to browse the Fort Collins team here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3291107 Mock them if you must, but as this is an all-ages forum please keep that in mind. In any case, we know who the cool writers are. You could be one of them. One of the proud, the few, the Greeleyite WriMos. Do you want to join our team? Read on, dear friend.

This word war is completely voluntary! Just because you are affiliated with the Greeley region does NOT mean that you are automatically part of the battle. To join you must post on this thread before Friday, November 13th. This post must make it obvious that you're joining the battle. An example of such a post is "I'm in!"

We are judging the contest in two ways:
- 1) Average number of winners per region
- 2) Average word count

Additionally, this year we will be adding a new facet to the challenge. Keep in mind that this is completely voluntary. At write-ins we will be collecting donations for NaNoWriMo throughout the NaNo season. It doesn't matter how much you donate - it could be as small as pocket change or as large as even $2! Or more! Once the battle is over and the winning region has been declared, we are going to pool those donations with Fort Collins and donate every penny to NaNoWriMo in the winning region's name. You do not have to contribute any money to participate in NaNoWriMo or this battle, but because NaNo is a nonprofit organization and often struggling for enough money to be able to pay their staff, we decided to help them out with collecting donations for the cause. If you can't make write-ins but would like to donate anyway, click on the Donations/Store button at the top of this website. They also have information for how to donate when you don't have any money - such as using a certain search engine that donates to NaNo every time someone uses it.

Well, everyone, those are the rules. Are you in?
An Actual Book?

This notion of getting my finished novel in a physical book foorm is both exciting and terrifying. Now I have to pay attention to quality? This is where the rubber hits the road
If nothing else, to actually hold a book I've written in my hands, and, let's face it, show it off to friends and relatives. I can see that nothing else is going to get done this month.
Woo-Hoo! We're writing!

I don't know about any of the rest of you, but I wait all year long for the start of November.

I get to write. I don't care about the inconvenience of getting up at 3:00 in the morning-I embrace it. I don't listen to anyone's bitching about my being preoccupied with things other than what they think I should be concentrating on. I get to live in the fantasy/creative/novel-writing mode my brain secretly lives in most of the time.

Did I mention that WE GET TO WRITE?!?!

This morning, I did 3,211 words in three hours (not including three walk-around-and-mumble-to-myself breaks) that I love. Love, I tell ya! I don't even care about the switch to daylight savings time, though it's a communist plot.

Is NaNoWriMo just the coolest f-ing thing on the planet, or what?

Enjoy.

Thom

(Following that outburst, I'm receding to the obscurity of my camper trailer once again.)

(Can you tell I'm excited?)

Anyone else? Please.
----------

Kick-Off Party RSVP

GREELEY! ARE YOU READY? NANO'S ALMOST HERE!

I'm not ready.

But that's okay.

It's almost time for NaNo to start. That means it's almost time for the Kick-Off Party! The KO Party, in short, is where you can meet other WriMos, talk about your budding novel-to-be, and get free stuff from me!

Awesome, right?

Well, this year, due to a few factors, we're combining the first write-in of the season and the Kick-Off Party. The first half of the event will be the KO Party, full of fun, games, awesome people, ninjas, and free things. The second half of the event will be full of writing! If you are able to only make the KO part of the event (or the write-in part), that is completely fine! Leaving early or coming late is no problem.

WHEN: Sunday, November 1st, from 11am - 2pm.
WHERE: Margie's Java Joint, 931 16th Street, Greeley, CO 80631 (It's right on the corner of 16th street and 10th ave, across the street from UNC's Frasier building, and it's in the same structure as the Bookstop).

For the KO Party part, you need bring absolutely nothing! As Margie's is kind enough to let us have the event at their establishment, though, if you anticipate wanting coffee, a smoothie, a delicious food item, or whatever else, you may want to bring a bit of money. We will also have a donations jar that we will donate to NaNo at the end of the season but you do not need to donate a single cent if you don't want to.

For the writing part it is recommended that you bring something to write with or on. They have plenty of plugs at Margies so laptops are a go, as are pen and paper, napkins, your arm, whatever you write best on!

If you are definitely going to make it, or you think you might make it but you're not sure if you're going to be able to, post here! That way I know how much free stuff to bring for you! However, if you're reading this 20 minutes before the event starts, please show up anyway! An RSVP is really just so I know approximately how many chairs to steal and don't let a lack of an RSVP stop you from attending the event.

I hope to see you there! You'll be able to find us by my pin-filled hat and the table tent sign.
Halloween/Kick-off Party

Hi LocoFoCo Wrimos,

We know this is a little late in the season but a place has finally been determined for the official midnight halloween/kick-off party. Crash tried really hard to get us a coffee house for the party but they were horrible about returning phone calls. Oh well its their lost business.

Therefore we will be having the traditional Halloween/Kick-off party at Scimoria (2701 Sutton Ct., Fort Collins, CO 80526) a fellow wrimo's house. It will start at 9pm and go till we drop.

This is a potluck so bring something to share, post what you plan to bring so that we get a variety of foods. Also provide an index card with the ingredients so people with allergies can eat safely. And I will make one last request if you can bring a bag of halloween candy they will be collected so there is always a pot of candy for energy at write-ins.

Please help spread the word about the kick-off party to help us compensate for the late notice. Also if you are new to NaNo don't be shy about coming you will be welcomed. If you want send me a private nanomail for more information. Parents are welcome to come with their writer's as we understand you will want to meet the group your teenager will be writing with.

It is a halloween party so we look forward to seeing the wonderful costumes.

Introductions thread!

Hello Greeley WriMos! I hope the off-season treated you all well and welcome to all the newbies! My name is Skyla and I'm your local Municipal Liaison (or ML). Basically what I'm here for is to help make your NaNo experience awesome! I'll be organizing several local events including the Kick-Off Party, weekly write-ins, and the Thank Goodness It's Over Party. I'm also available for any questions you have! Feel free to contact me with anything you think I can help you with and if it's a question that's beyond me I'll find someone who can answer it for you. If you have any questions about the rules, events going on, problems with your novel, problems with finding the motivation to continue on, etc. feel free to message me.

Okay! So as the thread topic suggests, this is an introduction thread. Feel free to introduce yourselves and see who else is going to be writing in Greeley (and the surrounding areas) this month as well.

My name is Skyla and this is my 4th year MLing for the wonderful city of Greeley. This will be my 7th (yikes!) year participating in NaNoWriMo. I have absolutely no idea what my novel is going to be about this year, but that's pretty typical. I usually don't figure it out until at least half-way through October and even then my ideas will decide to change throughout November. All my other novels have had a fantasy spin on them so that's probably the genre I'll be writing in this year as well. I usually never know what's going on in my novel because I never got the hang of actually planning my novel out in advance.

And on a side note, this will unfortunately be my last year as an ML for Greeley due to that whole pesky "graduation" thing (unless something goes terribly wrong and I fail Physio, but I don't see that happening). Therefore, for NaNoWriMo 2010, Greeley will be needing a new ML. If you're interested in taking over next year, read through this: http://www.nanowrimo.org/node/1003232 and see if that's something you'd definitely like to do. If you're thinking that you might want to be the next ML (or know for sure), feel free to message me and I'll include you in what's going on this year ML-wise to make it a smooth transition for next year.

Alright! That's enough from me, let's hear about you!
What does this mean?

I got this guide from National this morning. I get the time zone part, and i THINK I set it but what is the rest?
Tomorrow
: Make sure you've set your time zone correctly (it's under User Settings). Some
word-count features appear and disappear at midnight on November 1 and November 30,
so dialing those in now will save you stress later.

Hey kids,
Sometime during the month I'm going to do a story about NaNoWriMo for Bear News (UNC campus news show, airs on channel 98). I'm going to include info about WriMo, footage of write-ins, etc, and most importantly, INTERVIEWS with writers! Let me know if you want to be interviewed!
Field Trips!

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3289984

This year, I'll be running and attending a few field trips for the Fort Collins region and will attempt to make them truly regional events by inviting those from nearby.

There will be three major field trips, all three to Denver, on various dates during the month. The dates have yet to be nailed down, but the destinations are set.

The three trips will be to:
The Denver Museum of Art
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science
Denver International Airport

The thought is that we can settle in and write at various locations around these places, surrounding ourselves with artwork or dinosaurs or a huge bustling crowd of people for inspiration.

If you are interested in any or all of these, please let me know via the above thread as soon as possible. The Art Museum will be $7, the DMNS $10, and DIA will be around $5, depending on the driving situation, as we'll only be paying for parking.
----------
- Crash
Fort Collins, CO.
