Hello and Welcome!

Hello and Welcome to NaNoWriMo 2009!

I'm Becka, the Charleston, SC region ML. If you have any questions, concerns, laments, or brownies please come see me first (especially if you have brownies...). I can answer most of your questions, and I have the direct line to the NaNo crew if I can't.

I have big plans for this year's NaNo - including many shiney write-ins, parties, and even our own Night Of Writing Dangerously. And once NaNo is over I also head up the NaNoFiYe group - National Novel Finishing Year. So once November is over you can still get your NaNo fix.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm a nuclear chemist with a strange addiction to sticky notes. I talk about a place called Fie Eoin a lot, and I love mythology. So this year's novel is a re-telling of the classic myth of Apollo and Daphne.

What about you? Who are you, and what are you writing this year?
Upping the Ante

So, you should all have seen this: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3456461 on the front page by now. It's a challenge, between you and the great staff of NaNoWriMo. They want you (yes, You!) to help them raise $100,000 on Tues the 24th. If you can do it, they will write a song and do an interpretive dance to it, and post it on the home page. This is insane, and crazy, and has never been done before in a single day. And to help them out (and to help my word count out, because I'm still desperately losing to Tikatu in Greenville) I'm going to do one better:

For every word war that I lose between now and the end of the day on the 24th, I will donate $1 to NaNoWriMo.

But there is a catch: If You lose a word war to Me then YOU have to donate $1 on the 24th.

So who is up for the challenge? Whenever you see me in the next five days challenge me. If I have the extra five to fifteen minutes to spare, I'll accept your challenge, and the loser will pay the piper on the 24th.
TGIO RSVP

All right everyone. I know you're all focused on your novel right now, pushing for 50k and beating your characters into shape (or handing over the reigns, depending on your style), but let me take just a moment to remind you that the end is almost here! And to celebrate the end, we will be having a Thank God It's Over Party!

The TGIO Party will take place on Saturday, Dec 5th at 7pm until whenever you want to leave (or the restaurant closes). It will be held at Home Team BBQ on Ashley River Rd (near the intersection of Cosgrove Ave). Just tell them you are with NaNo and they will show you to the back patio. Also, because I know there was some concern about this, the music doesn't start until 10pm that night, so we will have plenty of time to talk and hang out before then (and it's not so loud on the patio even during a live show).

From Mt P/Downtown: Take the crosstown over the bridge and veer to the right onto the little drive next to the marsh that puts you on Hwy 61/Ashley River Rd. (If you miss this little drive, because it's easy to do, just take a right at the next light and then take a left onto 61) Drive down 61 a couple miles until it splits into 61 and Cosgrove (just after Taco Bell). Take the left split through the light, and Home Team will be on your left across from the Rite Aid. They have a big orange sign, and parking in the back.

From N.Chuck/GooseCreek/Summerville: Take I-26 towards the penninsula, get off at the Cosgrove/216A exit. This will split after a couple miles - take the left split (stay on Cosgrove). At the Rite Aid where Cosgrove meets Hwy 61, take a right, and Home Team is immediately on your left. They have a big orange sign, and parking in the back.

If you have any problems finding them, their number is 225-7427

If you are planning on coming to the TGIO party, please RSVP below! I hope to see you all there!
Writer's Choice - Final Week!

First off, Congratulations to Imaginary_Rose! You won last week's Writer's Choice :D

This week, since we are getting a later start, we will keep posting open until Friday at midnight, and voting will be until the 30th at Midnight. The winner can get their goodies at the TGIO party (or I can mail it to you, if you can't make it)

My scene:

Rage took over and Apollo shoved Eros into the lockers, holding him there as the chubby faced boy tried to shrink back. Apollo’s arm came back to punch him in the face but someone grabbed his wrist and he turned on them, teeth clenched and all of his anger in his eyes. It died inside him as Daphne flinched back and he dropped his arms, releasing Eros.
“Don’t hit him,” Daphne whispered.
“Give me one good reason not to.” It felt like a growl in his throat instead of words, he was so angry. Angry at Niobe’s kids for telling, angry at Eros for using it against him, angry at Daphne for stopping him.
“He’s already halfway down the hall,” she smiled briefly, then swallowed. She looked guilty, apologetic, and worried for him. “Eros isn’t worth it.”
“You were the one who told me to punch him next time.”
“Yeah, but not at the expense of everything. Are you trying to get kicked out of UW? Because NYU isn’t going to accept you if you’re suspended for fighting.” She tried to smile again before she looked down at her feet.
She was trying to joke about it? Right now, when she had dumped him as both a boyfriend and a friend just for being accepted at UW? Apollo made a disgusted noise in his throat and walked away. Now she wanted to reconcile? Now after everything that had happened? No thank you.
“Poe, wait.”
He walked faster.
“Apollo, stop.” She ran to catch up with him and grabbed his arm. He winced – it was still bruised there – and she let go quickly. “I want to talk to you.”
“Well, I’m sorry, but you had your chance. I don’t want to talk to you anymore.”
He turned again to leave but she stepped in front of him. He thought that was pretty brave since he had just slammed someone into a locker and tried to punch their face, but he supposed she knew he could never hit her. Even telling her that he didn’t want to talk took all the anger and courage that he could afford. When she stepped in his way his shoulders sagged and he closed his eyes.
“Poe, I really need to talk to you.”
“Did you know,” he said, his voice quiet so that no one else would hear him, “that when Hyacinth died I tried to kill myself? I tried to take a bunch of pills and my mother had to rush me to the hospital and pump my stomach. Because her death was so hard to deal with.” He opened his eyes and looked at her, “but it’s been even harder trying to deal with you dumping me. Because I’m still hurt from Hy’s death, and because I know that if she had the choice she would have stayed with me, but you? You dumped me, and fired me, and then told me that you wouldn’t even be my friend anymore. So maybe my car accident was less an accident than an attempt to get away from it all. Because it hurts. It hurts So. Freaking. Bad.”

(That originally said a much naughtier word, but I changed it for the forum because I don't want to corrupt anyone's ears)

Just a little encouragement for those of you who are lagging behind and want to quit. It's a blog post from my current favorite blogger, Doyce Testerman (who is somewhere on this site doing the same thing you are!) It's about being behind, and how you can catch up (and once you are caught up, read the rest of the NaNo posts on his blog - they are great!)

http://doycetesterman.com/index.php/2009/11/nanowrimo-okay-how-far-behin...

There is some adult language in that post, just to warn you. If you are okay with reading that, then I think you will enjoy the post (and hopefully find some encouragement there!)
For the hand-writers (like me!)

So I didn't know about this before going ahead and typing everything up (I still subscribe to the school that says typing up what you wrote every night is still easier than trying to type it all up at once later) but just in case you've fallen behind in your transfering and still want to win NaNo, I found this while lurking over on Greenville's forum:

Tikatu wrote:
I know we have a few people here writing their stories the old-old-old-fashioned way, by hand. My son (UndeadKevin) is one of them and I was dreading having to type all his material up before 11:59:59 on November 30.

BUT I just found out about the Luddite Clause, and if we can possibly go that route, we will.

To quote the FAQs:

Quote:
How do I verify if I'm writing by hand?

Invoke the Luddite Clause!

What you do is write your 50,000 words, then have someone you trust verify that it is, indeed, 50,000 words. Then using something like the Lorem Ipsum generator, submit a file of the exact number of words of your handwritten manuscript to our word count validator.

The Lorem Ipsum generator can be found here: www.lipsum.com.

Here's hoping our longhand writers have reached 50K!

So you can still win, even if you don't get *everything* typed up on the computer!
It's okay...

I scrapped my plot. I just wasn't in love with it, and I figured out that that's why I was having a hard time keeping up with writing, when 1600 words a day is usually a snap for me. I didn't love my characters, and the plot just wasn't moving along the way I wanted it to. So I scrapped it, and I feel completely okay about that! :)
I thought I'd be upset, because I'd waited almost a year for Nano after finding out about it at the end of last November. But I'm not! I'm actually more relieved than anything. I'm back to writing on the piece I was working on before November hit, and if I'd waited to write that during Nano, I'd have passed 50,000 days ago! Oh, sweet irony. lol
While I am a bit disappointed to not be able to say that I won this year, I know exactly how to prepare myself for Nanowrimo next year! :)

We're at War!

A word war, of course, with the Greenville, SC region! As of right now we are 11 active members short of their total of 41 - which means we are going to have to write write write come November to beat them. But I'm confident that we can do it!

And to up the stakes? The Greenville ML, Tikatu, and I will be having our own personal ML-to-ML Word War challenge! So if you see my word count falling behind, crack the whip! May the wordiest ML win!
Writers Choice - Week 3!

First off, congratulations to KasurinYokaiNeko for winning last week's Writer's Choice!

Same deal this week: Post by Midnight Thursday. Vote until noon on Sunday. And please, keep your scenes short!

Apollo’s splint kept his middle finger sticking out and his wrist from moving, and after the fun of constantly flipping his sister the bird wore off, Apollo decided to keep all his fingers out as often as possible. Especially after the employee in the drive through at Burger King took offense. He spent the rest of the weekend on the couch, letting his mom and sister wait on him, and dreading the coming week.
Everyone wanted to see his hand on Monday morning. The joke of flipping everyone off was back, and Apollo was feeling better until Eros walked into homeroom, a flower sticking out of one of his shirt button holes.
“What happened to you?” Eros said and stood over Apollo’s desk. “Someone come back from the grave to take her revenge? Or did you try to kiss Daphne and she broke your finger for it?”
Daphne, who was sitting on the other side of Apollo, leaned over with a cruel smile up at Eros. “I wouldn’t hurt Apollo if he kissed me. I reserve that right for you.”
Eros gave her a bland smile in return and headed towards a seat at the back of the class. Apollo was sitting stiff in his chair, but Daphne was riled and looking for a fight now, she turned around in her seat. “Nice flower. Did your mommy give it to you? Because I don’t know any girls at this school who would want to give you a token of their affection.”
Apollo closed his eyes and lowered his head and wished she would just shut up. He knew why Eros was wearing the flower.
“Actually,” Eros said, his voice grating across Apollo’s brain like a bad hangover. “I’m wearing it because I'm in mourning.”
“What died? Your honor? Or is it impossible for something to die if it doesn’t exist in the first place?”
Shut up, Daphne, shut up! Apollo thought and covered his head with his hands, his broken finger throbbing in its foam and metal prison.
“A very sweet, sweet girl died.” Eros said and Daphne growled deep in her throat as she realized she’d been led into a trap. There was nothing to do now but let it come out and explain the truth of it later.
“You see,” Eros went on, “this flower is a special flower. They say it first bloomed from the blood of a young boy, who died too soon. A little boy whose life was taken from him by an accident, and the marks on the petals are his tears for the long, beautiful life he would miss. Tragic.”
Apollo brought his hands down onto the table, making a loud noise that jarred Eros from his little monologue and made Daphne look down at him, sharply. She put a hand on his shoulder. “Poe, calm down.”
“It’s a hyacinth flower,” he growled and clenched his fists together, his middle finger sticking out mockingly.
Daphne looked from him to Eros, and her eyes narrowed. She stood up from her desk and walked back to where he was sitting, leaning over him. Apollo turned around to see what she would do.
“Stop it,” she whispered harshly. “He hasn’t done anything to you. Leave him alone.”
“That’s sweet,” Eros said with a cocky grin. “You’re standing up for your new boyfriend. You do know he kills his girlfriends, don’t you? You’re not safe-“
Eros wasn’t able to finish as her hand came down across his face, slapping him into silence and leaving an angry, red mark across his cheek.
“Daphne Lastname!” the teacher jumped up from his desk. “Principal’s office. Now!”
Daphne went gladly, touching Apollo’s shoulder in sympathy as she walked by. He gave her a small smile. He was glad to have her on his side.
TGIO Party! (VOTE PLEASE!)

I know that Dec 1st seems a looooong way off right now, but eventually we will get there, and to celebrate our month of madness we will have a TGIO Party. You all know what TGIO means right?

Thank God It's Over! :D

Now, Dec 1st is on a Tuesday, and I bet most of you plan on sleeping as much as possible, or vegging out in front of the TV. At the very least not thinking about NaNo! So I'd like to have the party sometime the weekend of the 5th. Either <strike>Friday evening (4th)</strike>, Saturday afternoon/evening (5th), or Sunday afternoon/evening (6th).

As for place, since the Kick-Off was up in North Chuck I'd like to have the TGIO a little closer to the main peninsula. I was thinking we could have it at Home Team BBQ on HWY 61/Ashley River Rd. It's very easy to get to from the highway and has plenty of seating, plus some of the best BBQ and banana pudding you can imagine. It's also got a good beer selection for those of us old enough to celebrate with alcohol, and they'll be having live music on Friday and Sat. If everyone likes this idea I'd be more than happy to go in there and talk to them about hosting the TGIO party there and reserving the back picnic area for our group (and hopefully waiving the music fee if we end up staying late enough for the show, which is at 10pm).

And the old ML offered up her smores maker, if Home Team will let us bring it :P I swear I will get smores to you guys one way or another this year!

Becka wrote:
I just heard back from Home Team and they said we could have the back patio after 6pm on Sat, or anytime during the day on Sunday. They would be willing to waive the music fee on Sat. for us, but I don't know how much it will be (if anything) to reserve the patio. That will be my next question for him :)

Unfortunately, my husband's Office Christmas Party has been scheduled for Friday night, so I won't be able to host the TGIO on that night. So let's hear it:

A. Saturday Night! Let's party with good music!

B. Sunday Afternoon! I don't have anything better to do!

C. Sunday Evening! I want to sleep as much as possible before the TGIO party!

Write-In on the 22nd

I see that this Sunday's Write-In is at the Starbuck's on King Street downtown. I am not all that familiar with downtown, but is that near the Visitor's Center? I'm thinking I could park there and walk over it they are close. Or go down to the Market early and have lunch at Bubba Gump's and then head over. Mmmm...Bubba Gump's....*drool*
Mini write in on the 25th?

I may actually be able to make the write in this Wednesday (if I wake up early enough, eheh), but I'm not entirely sure which Panera the write in is being held at. The map function points to a Bojangles elsewhere in town, and I know that there are a few Panera in the West Ashley area. (I've lived here two years now but I don't get out that often because I work at night. Urf.)

I would love a chance to get out of the apartment and write, but... I need to know where to go. D:
Last Minute Dash to the Finish (and Tacos)

Hello my fellow explores into novel-land,

I am inviting all of you to a November 30th get-together. I'm hosting it at my apartment, and I will make you tacos. Possibly some other snacks too. For those of us that aren't done, we can cordon off the office/guest room as a writing only section, if you like. For those of us that are, we have Rock Band, Halo, and some more old-fashioned games too.

I'm thinking we can start the festivities around sixish. Depending on when most people can get here, we might not eat tacos until later. Now, if anyone wants to come early, they are welcome. They will also be roped into helping get ready for the party. Consider yourself warned.

Now, it certaintly doesn't have to go this long, but I'm thinking we can stay until midnight, to see the crazy month out in style. (Someone mentioned arranging for a ball to drop). Also, that way nobody will blame me for messing up their wordcount by forcing them to go home early.

So yes, please let me know if you can make sooner rather than later. I will need to go shopping.

Also, it would me much appreciated, though not at all required, if some of you would agree to bring drinks, or other snacks, possibly some dessert. If you think you can, go ahead and let me know, so I know what we've got.

Also, my husband will be there, as well as some other non-writers. So, if there are any non-writers in your life that might enjoy coming, or just enjoy tacos, feel free to bring them! Kidlets are welcome as well in the house, though the toys I have to entertain them with might be limited.

The place:

101 Bridgetown Rd, 20B
Goose Creek, SC 23452

Hope to see you all there! Write well.
If it's all supposed to be down hill from here...

Then why is the world dragging myself through a field of horse dung more appealing than writing my novel right now...?

Seriously, I've written only a thousand words since I hit twenty five k. And that took three hours to do, and it was very forced. My characters are doing fine, the plot is fine... I just think I'm experiencing a week three blues sort of effect. And it's keeping me from being productive. :(

Any advice?
Somehow, I keep mashing the language button

Right now my page is in French. Before it was in German. I think the language changes are a bit too close to the word count update button for my preference.

Now I have a debate...Do I want to Apercu, or Soumettre this post? Hmm.
Thanksgiving Weekend

I know a couple of you already replied in the Write-In thread, but it's buried on the second page and I'm not sure how many people are reading that thread. So I'm putting it out here instead, to make it easier on myself and everyone else.

Who is going to be around on Thanksgiving weekend, and able to get to a Write-In?

If there are only a few of us around we'll have the write-in at the Charleston Coffee Exchange on the corner of Bees Ferry and Hwy 61, but if there will be a bunch of people around we will find someplace else to hold it (someplace not next to or inside a mall/shopping center/barnes and noble. Trust me, I've been doing this a long time and that is NOT the weekend you want to be in any of those places for a write-in!).

If people are interested, we can even do a couple official write-ins. I'm not going anywhere and I won't have family in town, so I'm free all weekend.
November 22nd Write-In Car Pooling

I know that a lot of us are more towards the Summerville, North Chuck, Goose Creek area and I'm sure a decent number of you want to go to the write in down in Charleston. So I figured we might could set up a car pool to get there, to save gas, since it's so high these days.

I can volunteer my car, although it is small, junky and ghetto. That, and I haven't an inkling where I am going. I'm willing to drive and all, so long as some knows where we are going, unless someone else wants to offer up their ride.

I'm guessing we could all meet at designated drivers house or somewhere nearby, so that everyone who isn't driving can park their vehicles for the time being around 12:30 wherever that would be that Sunday so we'd have enough time to get up there.

Any takers?
Goose Creek/North Charleston Mini on the 20th

Okay so the 20th is my B-day and my boss gave the day off. It's a Friday and I'm out of class at about 11. Would anyone like to meet up either at a book store on Rivers Ave or at the Atlanta Bread Company on University Blvd at about 1 or so? I'll probably eat at Ryans on Rivers before going somewhere for a mini and then leave for my boyfriend's job at about 6. So anyone up for it?
