Someone, a Minotaur is going to appear. I'm not sure why, or how he will wind up in my novel. . . but he's going to be serving soy lattes. All this, because I was procrastinating (playing Farmville), and thinking about NaNo!

While there is a place to put an except of your novel-in-progress on your userpage, I thought it might be an interesting thing to have a thread on here for people's excepts, if you'd care to share with your fellow writers. If you aren't afraid of them looking at you funny every time they see you from now on, because of the weird/horrifying/disturbing/funny/poorly written (remember, it's November!)/Sueish thing you wrote.

Here, I'll even go first! A particularly ghastly paragraph fairly early on that I'm rather proud of.

'...Standing before us was a man.

At least, if you could call it a man. It was like no man I had ever seen, nor are you likely to see anything as grotesque – hope that you never do. Thin he was, thinner than the scrawniest person you'd ever met, as though he had never consumed so much as a crumb in his life, his thin muscles and bones showing through his skin. And skin it was, he was no lit'ka, nor likely any sort of human. In the pale glow his skin looked ashen grey, and his unnatural thinness made him look like some horrible scarecrow. He wore little, a cloth skirted about his waist and little else, letting us see the cavernous inward curve of his belly, his ribs giving a horrifying counterpoint. Arms seemed far too long, his fingers seeming to dangle just to his knees, long claws where a man's fingernails would be. But his head – rather than a human's flat face, or even the muzzle of one of us, it was as though someone had broken off the skull of some enormous raptor, eyes gouged out, and beak splintered, and set it upon his neck. Dark red veins gleamed and pulsed across the dome, as the eyeless sockets peered back down at us. Another chuckle rose from the half-broken beak.

Shall we introduce ourselves? I thought about leaving this up to an ML, but am far too impatient...

Tell about yourself, your NaNo habits, totems, snacks, etc, your plan for NaNo 09 (if you have one), and whatever noveling-related thoughts or encouragements you have to share.

I'm a 27 year old NaNo first-timer from East Lansing. I love travel, all things MSU (grad 04), writing, reading, running and sometimes family, if they don't interrupted my writing. My primary NaNo totem is a lovely hat I got on sale last week and has been used to great success in finishing several messy chapters of an existing novel I'm trying to wrap up before November. I have used guilt, physical abuse and other unsavory tactics to induce at least two friends into participating with me, and my snacks of choice are Parmesan Cheese-Its and Lindt truffles. The story I'm working out for NaNo 09 is a YA fiction centering around a girl with a strange gift for finding things others can't. Like fresh water. And missing keys. And top-level government conspiracies. Hmm... on that note, I need to go jot down an idea.

I live in Delta Township (right behind the Meijer that's across from the Lansing Mall) and I was just wondering if there was any other NaNos nearby. Two reasons: 1) I'd totally be interested in having a mini-group that gathers within walking distance somewhere, because I don't drive. xD 2) I'd love to go to the Kick-Off Party and write-ins at Gone Wired, but because of the previously mentioned non-driving, I don't really have a way of getting there, short of dragging my boyfriend and poor kids out to drop my ass off. And pick it up. So if somebody wants to do the carpool thing, I'd be awesomely appreciative. Awesomely, people.

Should I introduce myself? Probably. Er, my name's Brianna, aka The Tanya (long, boring story... if you feel the need to experience the sensation of a red-hot icepick being driven into your skull, please feel free to ask) and I'm a 23 year old stay-at-home mom to two little monsters -- I mean munchkins. It will be three little munchkins come March. Because yes, I am insane. I'm also apparently hated by some unknown deity because they are all girls. I think I massacred puppies in a past life or something... it must have been bad, really bad. 'Cause I didn't even get one boy. *sigh*

This is my first shot at NaNoWriMo, and I'm only here because my bestest friend (yes, I said bestest... and I'm writing a novel, god help us all) threatened... er, nagged... er, persuaded me to join. That's a good word, persuaded. I think I'll stick with that one. I love you, Heather! xD Hopefully it will be fun and productive.

So, some people like to listen to music while they write, some like to listen to it before and after they write.

While I write, I listen mostly to stuff without lyrics: Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, Nobuo Uematsu, Beethoven, Klaus Badelt, Howard Shore....Lots of movie soundtracks.

While I'm prepping for a writing session I listen to Within Temptation, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Enya, Nightwish, Three Days Grace, Skillet, Breaking Benjamin and Celtic Woman.
