Open office word count

This is a warning to anyone using Open Office. The word count feature on certain versions is not accurate.

I opened my file (made in 3.1.1) on a different computer today with a different version (2.0) and lost about 1000 words so have looked into why this happened. Apparently, it counts quote marks as words. So now I know I have approximately 1000 lines of dialogue as some experimenting showed that it only counts one extra word for a line in quotes. I'm going back to mourning my lost words now.

I nearly had a panic attack when I got home from the write-in yesterday. I *breathe* thought I left my *breathe again* jump drive at the BAM. /panicattack! After about 20 minutes of searching, I found it under the left front tire of my car. It must have fallen out of my bag on my way in. I was about to start my drive back to Huntsville. I have my story saved in several locations (jump drive, on the net book, and on the desk top) but when I was at the write-in, I only saved the newest part (about 4k worth) to the jump drive because ...well, because I'm stupid I guess. I think I am going to go back to emailing the entire file to myself once again. /endpanicattack.

Right now, our region is 201st in total word count (774081) but 442nd in average word count (8063).

If everyone could get their word counts up to where they should be by the end of the 11th (18333 words), we'd have a million more words, and we'd be in the top 100 worldwide.

Tomorrow is a holiday for most of us. Let's use that time to get our word counts up and take our rightful place in the top 100. We certainly have more concentrated brain power than the entire states of Montana (82nd) and Alaska (88th). Let's show them!

Dear Neighboring Regions (and Australia),
Greetings from fly, the ML for NaNo Nashville. This year, we are having our own ginormous write a thon, which we'll be holding the same time those out in Cali are having theirs (well, mostly). We would very much like you all to come. In fact, I would very much like to have so many writers that our total writers word count EXCEEDS that of the Cali event.

Details are as follows. Please post here if you can come.
NOTE: You only need to RSVP to one thread for this event.

The Evening of Scribbling Recklessly is on 11/22 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Nashville.

Where: 2300 Knights of Columbus Blvd. Nashville, TN

Where? - From I-40, exit Briley Parkway South (exit 215A), take the first LEFT onto Knights of Columbus Blvd.

When - 11/22 from 4-10 PM.

Important Notes:
$10 donation required for admission. This is in addition to any donation you've made. I will waive this for anyone that can prove they came from Australia.
Bring a side dish to share. Remember, we're pretty much all going to have computers handy, so stay away from really messy stuff. :)

We will be having a ton of giveaways.
You can get tickets for these givaways in a number of ways:
- Admission fee. Yes, you automatically get tickets for showing up.
- Bringing a dish to share like you're supposed to

The plot payoff

When I began writing this novel on the 1st, I had no idea of what the plot payoff would be. Would it be a big shootout, an alien attack, a lost love reunited?

As I was writing last night, it came to me, the payoff would involve explosions and death and life lessons, but then I realized that this would be the minor payoff and the big surprise ending was so much better than I could imagine before. Let's just say justice will be done, but not in an obvious way.

How is your payoff shaping up? Was it set in your original idea for the book or did it unravel as you wrote? Do you even have a payoff yet?

Thanks for providing a sense of community here, Since I cannot make most of the write-ins, these forums have served to keep me enthused and on task.

OK, I officially love going to ABC now. I chose to go there today for a fake write in to shape up my word count and get back on goal. I was there for 4 hours :0/ Successful though, I had a 6k word day :0) After about 3.5 hours one of the staff took pity on me. She'd seen me there all day and finally sat down across from me.

"You're trying to do it all in one day aren't you?"
"Err...uh....merr?"
"The Gerberding paper."

For those who didn't go to UAH, Gerberding is a (an amazing in fact) history professor. I admitted I was just writing for fun. She asked how many pages I wrote and when I said 15 she gave me a free sandwich claiming "OK, that's worse than a Gerberding paper."

Huzzah :0)

Write-ins

Hello all,
Bryan and I have been talking a lot about write-ins for this year. Here's where we stand:

Week-day write-ins

We've always had our AL-No weekday write-ins at Atlanta Bread Co. on University Drive (across from the Super Wal-Mart at Enterprise and University and on the down side/street side of the large Target/Babies R Us shopping complex). In the past, we've always had these on Tuesday nights. I'm thinking of shifting to Thursday instead due to a scheduling conflict I have with both Tues. and Wed. evenings. So how about Thursday from 6PM-8PM at ABC with an optional come earlier or stay later? They close at 9 PM and B and I try to get there by 5:30 PM for dinner.

They've recently remodeled and there is a great large table close to the fireplace, plus lots of electircal outlets all over the restaurant. There's also free Wifi. Check it out and see what you think.

Week-end write-ins

Again, we're thinking about making a change. Barnes and Noble South (on Bailey Cove) has covered up their one power outlet and Barnes and Noble West (at Bridge St., off Old Madison Pike) has only one outlet. We tried the Coffee Tree further South on Bailey Cove and they were great. We're also trying out Books A Million on North Parkway at University with its huge cafe.

Chime in if you have thoughts on the subject. And we're also thinking about going for every Sat. in November this year (although only B will make Noember 14 as I'll be out-of-town). Would it be easier to have it all at one place? And should we start after lunch, perhaps 1 - 4PM?

Give me your input, guys. And welcome all the newbies. I've been reading the posts, but have had traffic problems in getting my answers out timely. Forgive me.

Big wave to the folks who gathered at Atlanta Bread Company tonight for the write-in. I cranked out a little over 2200 words and also did some edits on paper, which I know I'm not supposed to do but I had too many errors to ignore. After not writing at all on Monday and Tuesday because of a sinus infection, I'm back on track. Yay!

Writing question with regards to NaNoWriMo

This only pertains to writing during NaNoWriMo -

When you write during, and for, NaNoWriMo - do you write perfectly? What I mean by this is, if you are writing and you can't find the right word you want to insert, do you just write several and then leave them all in there, but knowing you will go in and edit them out in December? You know, in order to make word count?

For example, if I write the following jibberish -

She stood there with hands on hips, staring /or glaring /or eyeballing /or gazing into the pinkish sunset /brilliantly glowing sunset /distorted sunset.

(See, you can't decide which word to use so you leave them all in for word count) or do you go ahead and figure out exactly what it is you want to convey and fix it before counting words?

I know, I know.... the silly details. LOL

I just wasted 10 minutes that I could have worked on my NaNoWriMo story.
