[STICKY] Pinoywrimo Progress Graph

We had this last year, and it was extremely useful by TGIO time, so let's do this again. :D

Here's how this works. One of the USA MLs set this tool up so whoever posts in this thread will automatically get added to this graph that displays all of our progress for November. It's not a complete picture of the region, but it's good enough to be able to see who's lagging behind and who's shooting up up and up. :D

So everyone who posts here will be added to the graph automatically. Just one post, and it's enough :D To make this thread a bit fun, let's include one line of our novel in our post :)

Okiedokie? Let me know if you have any questions. :D

<strike>* graphic image will be added in this space shortly, as soon as it shows up. :)</strike>

Aaand here's the graph!

* This image gets updated from time to time as people post here or if you update your word count. :D
[IMPORTANT] PinoyWriMo Pledge Program

Hi everyone!

To those who attended the Kick-Off, you wouldn't be a stranger to this one already as you've seen the sheets in your kits. To those who weren't there...here's something you missed :D

So we talked about fundraising, and here's a thread dedicated only to one of the ideas there, the pledging program. Details and instructions below, much thanks to purplyana. :)

How it works:
Get your friends and family to support your NaNoWriMo effort by pledging an amount they specify against a condition (for example, that you make 50K in the third week, that you make 50k at all, that you make 25k in your first week, etc.).

On the pledge sheet:
- Name of pledger
- Pledged amount
- Condition
- Signature

What you can do with the money:
- Keep some for yourself
- Donate to PinoyWrimo (to be given to an Ondoy/Pepeng charity and OLL)

Steps for PinoyWrimos who want to join:
1. Sign up at the forum for pledging.
2. Get or print out a pledge sheet. -> http://www.pinoywrimos.com/download/2009/pinoywrimo_pledge_sheet.pdf
3. Get friends and family to fill it out.
4. Meet the conditions (or don't).
5. Collect the money you make from fulfilling conditions.
6. Donate any money you want to donate via the website or at the TGIO

Once again, let me reiterate that this is NOT mandatory, and you don't need to do this to do NaNoWriMo. This is purely a volunteer thing, and we won't hold it against you if you don't do it. If you do it, we'll really, really appreciate it. :)

To those who are going to do the pledging program this year, please post a comment here so we can keep track on who is participating. Proceeds will also be posted here (and in the fundraising thread) so everyone's updated. :D

If you have any questions, please feel free to post here or email or NaNoMail me. :D
Who are the writers who have had the greatest influence on you, and why?

Before we settle into the madness that is NaNoWriMo, let's have a fun little discussion first.

Who are the writers who have had the greatest influence on you, and why?

These are the people who taught you how to write. The people whose tricks of wordplay made you catch your breath. The people whose works you can't resist quoting in your Livejournals and Facebook profiles or in your unli group messages to friends. The people whose plots and characters you can't get out of your head. The people who inspired you to make your own mark in the world of literature.

I'll start :)

J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis introduced me to the fine art of world-building. Back in my grade school days, as far as I was concerned, I lived in Middle-earth and Narnia. The real world was just... wallpaper xD They may not have been the best or the most accessible authors, but, damn, those guys could create. They were as a whole my introduction to the fantasy genre, to the realms of elves and dwarves and magic and talking animals. I've never looked back since.

Style-wise, my biggest influence would have to be Neil Gaiman. Simply put, I love him. I love the way he can play with ordinary words and craft them into the most lyrical sentences and turns of phrase that roll off your tongue and transform you into a puddle of dorky goo. I love the dark and haunting images he conjures in your mind. I love his inventive plots and his intriguing characters. "American Gods" was my introduction to urban fantasy, which is hands down my favorite genre, followed swiftly by everything else he's ever written. The "Sandman" graphic novels are a masterpiece. Neil taught me about metaphors and employing synesthesia in writing. He taught me how to twist the mundane into something deeper. He taught me how to research interesting tidbits from the annals of history and mythology. He taught me how to make words come alive. Neil Gaiman = God. 'Nuff said.

Terry Pratchett knocked down my conventional notions of staple elements in the fantasy genre. His parodic "Discworld" series challenged firmly-held beliefs, often by desecrating them in such a way that made me laugh out loud in public. He made fantasy funny, which in its own way was an enlightening experience. From him I learned how to write realistic dialogue and characters one could empathize with. I learned to not dump information about people and places all at once in the narrative, but, instead, to spread it out and let it develop with the plot. I also gained broader insights into social and political issues, which is not... quite what you'd expect from a fantasy series, but, then again, Pratchett is all about defying expectations. At the beginning, his stories can easily be dismissed as humorous light-hearted romps, but keep on reading and you'll be hit in the face with some pretty amazing stuff--- I cite "Feet of Clay" and "Thud!" and I rest my case.

Amy Tan is a brilliant wordsmith who delves into the fine lines between human relationships and leaves you totally heartbroken, yet happy that you had the opportunity to read something as beautiful as her work. She is a master of effortless language and lovely images. I mean, look at this (from "The Bonesetter's Daughter"): Yet I have a memory of her telling me with her hands, I can see her saying this with her eyes. When it is dark, she says this to me in a clear voice I have never heard. She speaks in the language of shooting stars. How can you not idolize someone who can write like that?

Gregory Maguire taught me how to write descriptions, how to create particular atmospheres with vivid imagery. He taught me not to be afraid to let bad things happen to my characters. "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" is my favorite book of all time. When pressed for a scene from literature that I can never forget, I always cite as my primary example Fiyero and Elphaba and the blanket that seemed like it would burst into flames, or roses.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez taught me that it's possible to write about things like sex, dementia and people born with a pig's tail while still maintaining an air of quiet, stately dignity. I often find myself awestruck by the depth and richness of his works.

Judith McNaught was my introduction to romance. While not a huge fan of the genre as a whole, I did catch a thing or two from reading her novels. She taught me how to describe eyes and hair and clothes and rooms--- all those little details that matter--- and how to create tension and effectively heighten drama.

Margaret Atwood and Toni Morrison's rambling styles encouraged me to experiment with my own free-flowing thoughts. They came with the added bonus of appealing to my feminist sensibilities and enriching the way through which I perceived the world. Jack Kerouac, Chuck Palahniuk, J.D. Salinger and Kurt Vonnegut stoked the angst-ridden fires of my teen years, capturing with their casual language the beauty and desperation of life and the struggles of those who seek to find meaning in it. They taught me about raw emotions and wildness.

I'm pretty sure that's it, but I might add some more as they occur to me.

Your turn now, guys. Go! :D
----------
"Crazy isn't being broken or swallowing a dark secret. It's you or me amplified." - Girl, Interrupted

What's your poison?

Hiya!

Just figured I'd open up another thread about what gets our NaNo-juices going, ingestion-wise.

I know a lot of people live on coffee in November, but I don't drink coffee, so my battery chargers of choice are Mt. Dew, chocolate, and red vines or Twizzlers. I also bake cookies when procrastinating, and eat them when pounding the keys.

This would hopefully get our word counts up and help us make writing buddies in our areas---we could have more midweek and weekend write-ins for our mentor groups then.

-------

Newbies, please post the following info if you want an Ate / Kuya to help you through November. Don't post your email addresses!

Ates and kuyas, please browse and NaNoMail the people you would like to mentor.

1. Age
2. Location (specifics like "Ortigas area" or "Makati" or "Cebu City")
3. Genre
4. Short info about novel (including language)
5. What you're looking for in a mentor (e.g. if you want someone who can meet you in person or if offline meets are OK, if you want advice on writing style or just encouragement and someone to bug you to write more)
6. Non-NaNo interests

Good luck! I'm sure you can have more than one ate/kuya if you want, but it would be nice to let them know if you have several (and if you have several, please let other newbies have a chance too).

Might as well. So you guys want to meet regularly? xD Once a week or something like that? I can try sorting out the scheds. Just give me details for your free time and contact info on nanomail, as well as any suggestions for meeting place. As for what we'll do. I don't know. Let's all meet first and see what happens, yes? If all you guys want to do is have lunch or cry on each other's shoulders because you have no idea why you're doing this then that's what we'll do. We shall see. XD As for any workshopping. We can do that when the month is done. We'll have to give consideration for the length of course but we'll see if it's doable.

But, yes, to start it all off. Does everyone want to attempt to get together next week? It's enrollment so we don't have to match class schedules yet. Maybe Wednesday at around 5 PM so everyone can get their enrollment all sorted out first?
Book haunts?

I'm guessing people here are pretty big readers.:D Just curious where you get your books from. Do you buy them from the mall bookstores (Powerbooks, Fully Booked, National, etc.)? Do you get them from second-hand stores or places that's not commonly known? Me, I usually look for books from those second-hand stores (like Booksale!) since they actually have more of those that I'm hunting for, and they're loads cheaper. What about you?:D
Pinoywrimos from outside Manila

I know most of the activities we organize are all in Manila, but I also realize (from the emails and RSVP's I'm getting and some people we meet at the chat) that there are a lot of Pinoywrimos outside of Manila, too. Sooooo....if you're one of them, this is your thread! Post a shout out here and say where you are from, and maybe you'll meet people who are in your area too!
writing out of order

Hello everyone!

I don't know how many of us are writing our novels in chronological order, or are skipping around from bit to bit to connect them all later. I just know I'm one of the former.

For anyone who likes to write chronologically...what do you do when an idea for a later scene hits waay too early in the month? How do you connect it all later?
Welcome! :D

Let's take a break from all the calamities our country is facing and let's bring in something good.

IT'S NANOWRIMO 2009!

Well, preparing for it. :D

To those who were wondering, I live in Cainta, so we're one of the people affected by Ondoy. I'm at our place in Ortigas now, trying not to think of the mess that we still have to clean up at home after the flood and instead thinking happy thoughts like NaNoWriMo 2009.

So hey! If you're here now...hello! Introduce yourselves! Newbie? Not? Come one, come all. :D You're welcome here. :D
Surviving Manila: Risen Threat (if anyone is interested in reading it)

Nanowrimo 2009 Entry: Surviving Manila: Risen Threat

There were hundreds upon thousands of them, moving down the narrowing section of the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue as if in silent protest against the corrupt regime of a debilitated government. No banners were raised in this march of the masses this time however. No music-interwoven insults were chanted. No stage was raised at the foot of the massive metal madonna whose outstretched hands held immobile beams of concrete hope.

This was no revolution unfolding upon the main road known as EDSA.

It was well past the third hour of the afternoon and the sun hung closer towards the horizon. A comfortably chilly November such as this would typically be punctuated by the blare of car horns, the groan and rumble of privately-owned buses and the self-serving sirens of the escorted public officials whose cars (regardless of whom rode in them) were given priority and enforced passage through the traffic slowed streets. Instead, there was an ominous lingering silence. The uneasy peace of quiet blanketed the area was reminiscent of ghost towns and movie cities that had been ravaged by the hordes of the undead or the undiscriminating touch of plague.

And that was quite an apt comparison.

For indeed Manila was infected with plague.
A plague of the hungry and the walking dead.

---
Sci-Fi/Fantasy Genre Writers

Hi, Writers!

I just wanted to open a topic for fellow writers in this genre whether it is the epic fantasy of "The Lord of the Rings," the alien worlds of "Dune," or even the cool, neo-vampirism of the hit "Twilight" series. Heck, the "Harry Potter" series is included as well. Why do you love the genre of speculative fiction & fantasy stories?

I'll start the ball rolling by saying I like how science fiction & fantasy use other genres like adventure, mystery & drama but build a whole new universe to set it in. I love writing for this genre because of world-building.

But it keeps has its heart in reality whether it is to prove that good can overcome the darkness when everyone pulls together by overlooking differences, that faith is the strongest power in the universe, or with great power comes great responsibility (okay, not a novel but a comic book and movie but you get my train of thought).

First lines!!

So what's the first line of your book? Or, if you're like me who's starting on the second chapter (LOLOLOL), the first line of the first scene/chapter/whatever you're working on this November?

Mine is:

Chapter Two

xDDD?

Okay, it's actually:

From her seat at the back of the class, Yukina watched her teacher flail around with his bleeding hand, splashing some of her classmates with his blood.

(And mind, I'm still thinking of a good word to replace "Chapter" like in some mangas and anime.)
What are you going to use to write your novel?

Being the geek that I am, this has always been one of my favorite questions. What software/writing instrument/method are you going to use in November? Will you write your novel by hand? Use MS Word? Or use one of those novel-writing software that are available online? Will you dictate it to a recorder? Upload it to the web or some space? Blog? Do share! (And if you have links to resources, do share too!)

I'm using three devices to write my novel, depending on where I am.

1. Aslan the Macbook
- to be used when at home or at write-ins
- Software: Scrivener (There's a special NaNoWriMo promo for Scrivener: http://www.literatureandlatte.com/nanowrimo.html :D)

2. Teo, the office laptop
- to be used when I'm at work (of course I'll sneak noveling time at work! :p)
- Q10 when I'm not multitasking or when I'm on a break
- MS Word or Notepad when I'm multitasking :D

- Writeroom for actual writing
* which reminds me, I should update my software, so I can have cut+copy+paste

For backing up and such, I'll be using my ever reliable Gmail, and my flash disk (Ginger). I'll also probably blog about what I'm doing too, because...well, my blog needs entries. :D

What about you?
Anybody care to tell his/her plot synopsis?

I thought it more apt to commence the NaNoWriMo officially by flaunting your synopsis here in this very post. In this way you will be more motivated to remain with your novel until its completion by the end of the month.

Be proud that you are a writer or an author. It's not always that we encounter Filipinos committed to this endeavor.

Write, write, and write in the hopes that your works will touch the hearts of many.

Hitting the daily word "quota"

Heeded some piece of advice from http://writetodone.com/. "Hit a word count. Set a word count to hit each day. If you write every day for 30 days, you need 1,667 words per day to hit 50K... Whatever your schedule, calculate your minimum word count and hit it every day. If you go over, hey, bonus."

Eight minutes after midnight of the first day of NaNoWriMo, I hit my daily word quota and went over by about 50 words. "Hey, bonus." Not a bad way to start, I think, cause they say that the first step is the hardest one to make.

Share your daily successes here. Thanks.
