<O> ONLINE events - Tri-City Calendar (Fredericton - Peoria - Gainesville)

For the online events, we are working with 3 adjacent timezones. In writing the times of the events below, the timezones are Peoria, IL (CST) / Gainesville, FL (EST) / Fredericton, NB (AST). So an event that is listed as 5pm/6pm/7pm – 7pm/8pm/9pm would run from 5-7 pm for folks in Peoria, from 6-8 pm for folks in Gainesville, and from 7-9 pm for folks in Fredericton.

If at any point you are confused about the time of one of these events, please don’t hesitate to contact your ML.

All of these events will take place in our chatroom, which is here: http://www.crushedmuffin.com/Chat2.htm. You can also get there from the Chat & Jar page on the Tri-City website. If you have a Meebo account, the room is called NaNoWriMo War Games

*Please note, the guest author event will take place in a different room – link below with the event.

A fortuitous meeting...

As some of you know, yesterday at the Write-In at Kade's we found out that the lady sitting next to our group was a book editor. We managed to pick her brain a bit and it was a lot of fun. She seemed very interested in what we were doing and even offered us her contact information. I wanted to share that info with all of you, too!

Her name is Heather Delabre and her email address, if you are interested in hiring her services down the road, is hdelabre@gmail.com

She did ask that you please put in the subject header of any emails you send to her the words NaNoWriMo or Peoria Writing Group, or something like that so she can keep everything organized on her end.

Good luck everyone!

Tri-City Frenemy program

Howdy,

I am Christy, one of the co-MLs from the Gainesville, FL region, and this thread is to introduce the "Tri-City Frenemy" program. This year Fredericton (New Brunswick), Gainesville (Florida) and Peoria (Illinois) have teamed up to create a little cross-regional competition. In addition to the online write-ins that each region is hosting, we want to encourage wrimos in the regions to reach out to writers in your "Sister-Cities" to find a writing buddy(friend)/enemy.

By picking a Frenemy from the Tri-City group, you'll have someone you can look to for support, or a little one-on-one competition during the online word wars, or at other times during the month. If you are looking for a writing buddy, I encourage you to reply to this post, let us know if you are looking for someone who will cheer you on, or someone who will taunt you whenever their word count sneaks past yours.

Feel free to take on more than one Frenemy, but remember, a writing buddy is a commitment, you have to feed them, walk them, and… well, not quite, but if you do pick a writing buddy, you both want to know that you'll have someone who will help see you to the 50k finish line.

So go ahead, and post your info, or look at the posts others have made, and find someone who you think would be a good match to your writing style, and adopt a Frenemy today. This thread appears in all three regions, so there is no need for you to leave the comfort of your own regional forum to find a Frenemy.

And for those frenemy buddies that want a chance to meet before November, - or if you'd rather pick a writing buddy "live", join us at the Tri-City Online Meet & Greet, to be held on Thursday, October 29th at the following time:

Peoria 6:30-8:30 pm
Gainesville 7:30-9:30 pm
Fredericton 8:30-10:30 pm

(This is the same time, reflected in the respective time zones)

The chat room for the online Meet & Greet, as well as the word wars (or any clandestine meetings for Tri-City region writers) is http://www.crushedmuffin.com/Chat2.htm

(If you have a Meebo account, the room is called NaNoWriMo War Games)

I look forward to seeing everyone through November!

So, how do you feel?

Congrats to all of you who are writing so far. I'm proud of you! Isn't it nice to see those word counts go up? Isn't it strange to find your characters veering off into, well to put it lightly, unexpected directions? Isn't it cool to know you're actually doing it, working toward this amazing and fun goal?

I wanted to ask, most importantly, how does your novel make you feel so far? Is it what you've planned or hoped for? Does it rise above your expectations and give you a warm fuzzy feeling every time you sit down to add more to its novelly glory? Is it maybe going in another direction from what you hoped, or turning out to be some horrible, terrible monstrosity that haunts you in your nightmares but you find you have some eerie unnatural drive to keep writing anyway? (I myself am starting to view mine as the latter, but chocolate, hot tea, and a grumbled reminder that this is only the rough draft keep me going.)

Share how it's going for you this year so far! We're almost about to wrap up the first week already. How time flies when you're having fun! (And how it flies even faster when you have a deadline to make!)

Tri-City: Word War Rules

At our online chats we will be holding multi-region word wars. At most of the regular chats, (Sundays, Thursdays and Saturdays) the word war will take place during the middle hour. Chat Room Here: www.crushedmuffin.com/Chat2.htm

At the other online events, word wars may take place as decided by the host region for the event. One of the MLs for the host region will be moderator / time-keeper for the word war. She will call “go” and “time,” at the prescribed time.

Participants in the war will write during that hour, and stop when time is called. In order to determine which words were written during the word war, we ask that you do one of the following:

 1. open a new document for the word war, and use the word count feature there
2. write down the number of words you have before we start the war. Subtract that from your total word count at the end of the war to determine how many words you wrote
3. or write you words for the word war in a different color text, so you can easily highlight it and do a word count on your selection.

At the end of the word war, once you have your word count, you will need to report the number of words you wrote. Before the word war, an ML from each region (if available) will identify herself as the one to take your word count.

Report the number of words you wrote to your ML. She will tally all word counts, and come up with the average word count for the region (total number of words divided by participants in the region). Your ML will report the word count average to the hosting ML, and she will announce the winner of the word war.

If no ML is present from your region for the word war, the hosting ML can either ask for a volunteer from your region to gather and average the word counts, or take and do the math for multiple regions.

This is a honor system. Please report your words truthfully.

We recommend keeping an eye on the time yourself, and/or leaving your chat window open, at least a little, next to your document, so you know when the war ends.

In order to be fair to people in your region for average word count, you can’t participate if you join the word war and/or are not in the chatroom more than 15 minutes after the word war starts.
Ideas for write-ins, parties & fundraising activities thread

We had 2 ideas tossed around yesterday for our TGIO party in December--one to have it at Firehouse on Galena with a live DJ. One to have it at (Jester---help me out!) a bar/grille in East Peoria when Jester's band is playing.

Mid-month I want to have a movie night...maybe at one of the libraries with writerly movies. I have The Secret Window with Johnny Depp and Stranger than Fiction with Will Ferrell. Someone also suggested we had to watch Misery with Kathy Bates. So--who would be interested in that? It would likely be Saturday the 14th...

Also, wanted to feel out how many of you might be interested in A-A NaNo Carols writing contest and B-Singing the NaNo Carols for donations (if we suck, we can always ask for donations to STOP singing-hee) for NaNoWriMo & its affiliated programs. The idea is this--take a well known holiday song, like Jingle Bells, Over the River and Through the Woods, Auld Lang Syne and replace the known lyrics with writing/NaNoWriMo related themes. For instance (hum a bar of Jingle Bells with me!) "NaNo books! NaNo books! Written all month long. Now they're done, so much fun! Why don't you take a look?" Yeah...lame...but crazy fun lame. =) There would be a prize for the winner of the contest & then if you don't have the funds to contribute--you can write a song, sing the tune & we can send the check with donation $ into The Office of Letters and Light with everyone who participated on the list.

What other crazy fun lame and non-lame ideas do you all have? Let's hear them!!

It's so exciting to see word counts start to appear on everybody's progress bars! Yay! I just updated mine, and though modest in number, it makes me happy nonetheless. It seems it gets easier as the word counts get larger and we all get used to writing every day for extended lengths of time again.

And...you will be amused to note (Cheri especially) that I did actually bust out my little laptop at 12:30 while drinking at the Firehouse after I got off work. I got more then a few strange looks and questions, but it was worth it!

Just wanted to share my excitement at getting things underway!
how to correctly set the time under user settings

Hi,
For all of you in Peoria, I'm wondering if your time is correct. They give so many options under the user settings - since I've never done this before I just want to confirm mine is set correctly. Why are there so many different hours for central time zone? I think mine is set at 07:54-0500. I did it at 7:54 this morning. Is this correct? I was not sure what the dash - 0500 meant.
Thanks for the help,

Last year or two I bookmarked some great forum posts about how to do stuff.

I didn't realize nano wipes all the forums at the beginning of the year.

So this year I'm saving to my (free) Evernote account (http://evernote.com).

We need to have some way to save stuff for later use.

What I DIDN'T save last year was some great stuff titled "Word Wars Against Yourself"

--------------

What brought this to mind is the great post from Juniper34 on how to get the cool banners for your signature; I'm hoping that won't get lost.

So where are you in your planning? And a question.

Just a little over 75 hours left to go before kickoff and I wondered where all of you 'non pants' writers are in your planning. I've decided to take myself out for dinner each night this week because I seem to do the best planning when I'm out of the house. So far it's worked well and tonight I finished outlining chapter 22. Then I skipped to the final chapter (# unknown) and wrote out most of how I wanted it to unfold since I was figuratively hit by a lightning bolt while finishing my entree. I hope you are all doing well with your planning, and you 'pants' people...I hope you've been flexing your fingers in preparation!

Now on to my question. I know there's a thread in the general 'nano' forum but I was hoping there might be someone local who could help me out. My novel is set in NYC and I've only been there once...about 22 years ago...and I was just driving through (lost). I could really use some help with locations, financial aspects, demographics, etc. If any of you know about NYC then I'd love to pick your brain sometime over the next few days. :)

Thanks and *gets out pom pons* Rah rah rah! Sis boom bah! Goooooooooooooooooooooooo NaNo!!!!!

Avoiding the colds & flus

So, I caught the cold/flu/crud/doom that my daughter has been struggling with for a few days & I really, really hope I wasn't contagious on Saturday! My boss sent me the following that I thought would be good to pass along to you--especially those I breathed on at Apple's on Saturday!

Fever is rare with a cold.

Fever is usually present with the flu in up to 80% of all flu cases. A temperature of 100°F or higher for 3 to 4 days is associated with the flu.

A hacking, productive (mucus- producing) cough is often present with a cold.

A non-productive (non-mucus producing) cough is usually present with the flu (sometimes referred to as dry cough).

Slight body aches and pains can be part of a cold.

Severe aches and pains are common with the flu.

Stuffy nose is commonly present with a cold and typically resolves spontaneously within a week.

Stuffy nose is not commonly present with the flu.

Chills are uncommon with a cold.

60% of people who have the flu experience chills.

Tiredness is fairly mild with a cold.

Tiredness is moderate to severe with the flu.

Sneezing is commonly present with a cold.

Sneezing is not common with the flu.

Cold symptoms tend to develop over a few days.

The flu has a rapid onset within 3-6 hours. The flu hits hard and includes sudden symptoms like high fever, aches and pains.

A headache is fairly uncommon with a cold.

A headache is very common with the flu, present in 80% of flu cases.

Sore throat is commonly present with a cold.

Sore throat is not commonly present with the flu.

Chest discomfort is mild to moderate with a cold.

Chest discomfort is often severe with the flu.

The only way to stop the spread of the epidemic is to spread the awareness.

Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice!!!!

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. The following message given by him and I feel it makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know.

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. (Proliferation- the growth or production of cells by multiplication of parts)

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms, and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, though not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe, or sleep).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one.. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Please pass this on to your entire e-list. You never know who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it!!!

Hello fellow Wrimos!!

The google calendar is still forthcoming however, I did want to advertise the upcoming meet and greet so that we could start to get an acurate idea of who would be interested in attending.

The festivities will begin at 11:00 am at Apples Corner Bakery on Knoxville (a little bit past Pioneer Parkway). Come and meet your partners in writing crime and enjoy some Apple's home baked goodies!

Please let either me or Cheri know if you will be able to make it so we can have a very general idea of how many seats we will need to save. You can either nano mail me, or post an rsvp to this thread. We look forward to meeting the new people and to hanging out with some old friends as well.

Hope to see you there!
So sorry to have missed you!

Hi all :^)

I was so disappointed that I couldn't join you today after all. My sweet, loving children shared their flu with me ( yes, THAT flu!) so I'm sure you appreciate that fact that I stayed home! I hope to meet some of you in the near (and healthy!) future :^)
