There's no such thing as a free lunch, much as we wish there were. Although NaNoWriMo is free to participants, it costs a ton of money to run everything, and the good folks at the Office of Letters and Light rely on donations to keep the gears turning.

Think about how awesome NaNo is. Think about how amazing it is that you are about to write a novel, maybe for the first time. Would you be doing that if not for the support of all the other people around the world doing the same thing, all coming together in one place to cheer each other on?

$10. A couple of value meals at McDonald's, a couple of drinks at a local bar, or an entire month of fun and craziness that leave you with a tangible reward for your efforts: 50,000 words that YOU wrote. And it's not over after that month; the forums are up for the rest of the year, so your fellow Wrimos can continue to support you as you rewrite and revise.

So what can you do?

Stop by the Donations page and give back to the event that's giving so much to you. $10 is all it takes to get a sweet halo next to your name here on the forums. Donate more and get more stuff. No matter how much you give, it feels totally awesome to know you're directly responsible for keeping the NaNo boat afloat.

If you can't donate, maybe other people you know can. Get sponsored! Set up your own individual sponsorship page or team, or join Cafe Con Letras, my fundraising team.

I went to the forums a few days ago asking for tips on how to write a character who was a mathematician. I got back a lot of good suggestions and a ton of jokes. Progress and Assistance with Writer's Block

Hey guys, hope you guys are all enjoying NaNoWriMo as much as I am! My story started off very weak and amateurish but it's getting better. However, I really need some advice on introductions. Can anyone give me some good tips on how to make your story more believable? (Please feel free to post about how your story is progressing and ask questions on getting past your writer's block. I want to be able to help all of you just as you're all helping me.)

Barnes and Nobles Literary Celebration

Dear WriMo's, my school is having a literary celebration on Nov.17 at the Barnes and Nobles in Kendall. Students from my school, including myself, will be reading different poems and excerpts from stories. Also, a portion of all money spent that night will be donated to my school's library. If you could please go and support us, I'd really appreciate it! I don't know what time it's at yet but I'll let you all know soon. Thank you! Doral write-ins

As mentioned in the calendar, the Doral write-ins will be held at the Borders at Dolphin Mall on Saturdays at 2pm. However, we've had a suggestion that they be held at the Panera on 97th Avenue and 41st Street instead. Personally, I think Panera has a lot to recommend it, like delicious food and free wi-fi and fewer crazy tourists. What say you folks? And who plans to attend these write-ins?

Technical difficulties

As previously mentioned by Chris Baty, emails are going out really slowly. Some updates on the forums, like the most recent post lists or the Quick Notes From Your MLs box on the regional forum page, are also taking forever for some reason. Hopefully the kinks will get worked out soon, but meanwhile, make sure you check back here for important messages and news so you don't miss out on anything. We'll try to post copies of any emails we send out here as well, in case the backlog continues. We're trying to send as few emails as possible anyway so we don't make things worse, in case you're feeling forlorn and wondering why we're not showering you with attention. :-D

Last call for suggestions on the party date, time and location. The current front runner is Casola's Pizza at 2437 SW 17th Ave, which is just off US-1 near I-95 and is near a Metrorail stop. I'm thinking either Saturday the 24th or Sunday the 25th for either lunch or dinner. Questions? Comments? Alternate suggestions? Please keep in mind that we're trying to find a place that everyone from Aventura to Homestead can reach if possible (tough, I know).

Book launch party for local author

Hey folks, I just got this email from a previous ML. If you can make it, this sounds like a really cool event!

I'm Rob Suarez and I was the Miami ML back in 2005 (or 2006, can't recall - old age!) and I wanted to let your groups know about a great opportunity to get inspired as they gear up for this year's NaNoWriMo - and support a local author in the process.

Local author, J.C. Hutchins (http://www.jchutchins.net), got his book "7th Son: Descent" picked up by St. Martin's Press, and it hit the bookstores this past Tuesday. To celebrate, JC is having a book launch party this Friday (tomorrow) October 29th. I think this would be a great opportunity for local WriMo's to meet and speak with an awesomely creative writer and a really nice guy.

Preparation for NaNo

As a newbie, of course I have questions and just wondered about those who are both new and experienced, how you approach this intense experience.

If you outline, are they very detailed or do you sketch a character, scene? Do you prepare your outline all the way to the conclusion?

Do you prepare at all for the write-ins?

Any tips for how you deal with the "wall" -- that space where you are unsure of how to go on?

Do you freewrite?
