أبدأ بنفسي: أنا ياسمين حميد، صاحبة مدونة أحلام
أنا في العادة أكتب نصوصاً قصيرة، شعر ونثر، لكنني منذ زمن أحلم بكتابة رواية. ذلك الحلم المؤجل...ه
ولهذا قررت هذا العام أن أشترك في نانوريمو لأجد شيئاً يحثني على الاستمرار في الكتابة. بدأت أكتب منذ أن كنت صغيرة، لكن دائماً أسجل رؤوس أقلام لفكرة، وأكتب بضع صفحات، ثم أتوقف. لهذا السبب لم أكتب حتى الآن نصاً طويلا يذكر، بغض النظر عن مستواه. أنا أكتب لأنني أجد صوتاً داخلياً يدفعني دفعاً لمحاولة التعبير عنه، ورغم أني أحس أحياناً كثيرة بالعجز عن ذلك، وبقصور لغتي، إلا أنني مستمرة في الكتابة.ه

Salam fellow writers. I have a confession to make, I am not in Egypt... Please don't kick me out! I am living in Jordan and we don't have our own group! I used to live in Egypt and I went to AUC for my Masters degree, so I felt more comfortable joining my neighbors than somewhere else in the globe.

My novel idea is a based on my experiences living in Jordan as an expatriate American Muslimah. I have developed a character and her family and hope to put into words many of the odd experiences that myself and other American Muslims have had living here in Jordan. I could do a similar novel about my experiences in Egypt, but that will be for another time!

I am interested in hearing about the stories coming out of the Middle East. Looking forward to the challenge. Salam, Azomama

Thanks everyone who helped me out with my last post. I hope it's okay that I post these questions, since I'm not in Egypt and have never been.

I've heard about the Omar Sharif soap opera, Nostalgia. I know he plays a character similar to himself -- an Egyptian who returns home after spending years abroad. That's all I've been able to find out from the internet. Could someone who's seen it tell me more about the plot?

I tried posting here earlier but it didn't seem to go through so here's my second try:

I'm a USAnian writing from Alaska.

I'm going to write a story that mostly takes place in Egypt. Trouble is, I've never been. Most of what I know of North Africa is from friends who have studied there. I hear that soap operas are quite the thing in Egypt. I was thinking my story could kind of morph into the style of an Egyptian soap opera (comedically dramatic and overblown), which would be easier for me to imitate. So I have some questions for y'all:

1) First and most importantly, how could I get some Egyptian soap opera DVDs? I think the Omar Sharif one, Sympathy and Nostalgia, would be PERFECT for what I'm doing.

2) There seems to be a lot of individual choice involved in “arranged” marriages, from what I’ve read. “Salon” marriages seem to be more like a series of blind dates. Under what circumstances would a family pressure a daughter into marrying someone she didn’t want to? (That’s one possible precipitating incident for my novel, not the main source of conflict, so I can change it if it’s not very realistic.)

3) Are the Christian and Muslim groups in Egypt culturally similar? How do different religions get along?

4) If you are an expat from a western country, how did the cultural adjustment go for you?

5) Anything else I should know?

If anyone felt like answering a few of these, I'd be grateful.

Plot? Or no plot?

Do you have a plot for your novel? Have you written an outline? Or are you just going to start and then see, where it takes you and your characters?

I have written a rough 2-page outline of what I want to write. I am not going to detail it too much, it's just a guideline, so I won't loose the plot completely. But if my characters decide to veer off that outline, I will let them and see what happens.

I really want it to be the first of November now, so I can finally start. I am starting to get really antsy now!

Hello everybody!

I thought it would be nice, if we have a thread where we can intorduce ourselves. Maybe that way we get a little communication going?

I'm from Germany, I'm 38 and this is my first time here. No idea, if I will manage the 50.000 words...

I moved to Alexandria in May 2000 and then to Cairo in September 2002. First I had a flat in Heliopolis and now I live in Maadi. Most of my friends are Americans and Canadians, mostly teachers.

My novel will be in English. Is anyone here planning to write in Arabic?

Here are a few gadget, that help you writing or to track your progress, while working on your novel.

I will probably write using this software:

Q10 is a very simple text editor. It is freeware, so no cost. Besides seeing your total word count as you go, you can also set partial word counts - for each writing session if you want. And you can set a timer alarm, that will go off after a specified amount of minutes - I think that's quite handy, if you want to for example write for 20 minutes. It's an EXE file though and they do not ogff a Mac version.

Also there are lots of excel files out there to track your progress manually. Here is a few that I have come across so far:
