Mind = Out the Window

Has it happened to you yet? The point where you feel as if, quite literally, your mind goes out the window? When you stop checking for typos, grammatically incorrect sentences, spelling issues, or people/events that randomly change names the more you talk about them?

Drop-Ins

Hello:)

As per the email sent out by our dear ML a couple days ago, I've started Drop-In write-ins, weekday midday Monday-Thursday from 11am-2pm -- mostly at the Caribou Coffee at Franklin & Estes (round the corner from University Mall). Anyone with suggestions for alternate gathering spots on Mondays and Thursdays, please post here or NaNoMail me:) Unless otherwise posted on this thread, I'll be at Caribou (Estes) each of those days -- and y'all are welcome to come buzz out a few hundred words in a supportive, TV-free, caffeine-full environment during your lunch break, or while the kids are at school, or on the way off-campus to or from classes:)

Today, sadly, I'll be a wee bit late (11:30-ish), due to poorly managed un-elastic ankles and a persistent case of house-chore-procrastinitis.

Ta!

Melanie
Week Two Woes

So, as everyone knows (or will shortly know), Week Two is the deadliest part of Nanowrimo.

Why? Because you hit the 20,000s. The part where you realize "WOW! I've done soooooo much!!!!." followed by the "oh my gosh...i've got SO MUCH MORE to do."

It's hard. My advice? Get through them as fast as you can. Hit 30,000 soon. Celebrate. Rejoice. Buy yourself coffee/ice cream/etc. (or make someone else). Come to a write in and gloat.

Or, just post here for encouragement, complaining, pseudo-trashing of your novels, or simply to draw attention to your word count (and the fact that you may need some extra encouragement).
----------
"On this journey that you're making, there'll be answers that you seek,
and it's you who'll climb the mountain; It's you who'll reach the peak!"

Radio Free Chapel Hill

As we're all in the midst of blasting out reams and reams of poignant and priceless prose, I was wondering what you're all listening to. Tastes run different, of course -- some writers listen to movements of a symphony in sequence during different parts of a novel (for continuity and parallelism, they say), and I've heard Stephen King likes to crank out some AC/DC. Just in case, though, I've been using Ruckus all day, so I thought I'd put down my top album picks for anyone looking for writing music.

+ "Blood Money" by Tom Waits
+ "Nocturnes" by Fryderyk Chopin
+ "Ben Folds Five" by Ben Folds Five
+ "The Crane Wife" by The Decemberists
+ "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" by Modest Mouse
WELCOME TO NANOWRIMO 2007!!!!

Hey everyone! Welcome welcome welcome to our very own beautiful mini forum for the Chapel Hill region. Whether you're a student, resident, worker, visitor, etc etc - we are here for support and fun times through the month of November.

I'll be sending out gazillions of emails later on, but please take the opportunity to introduce yourself here.

So...here goes.

Name : Karen

Occupation : STUDENT! Sophomore at UNC (Journalism / Drama double major)

Have you done Nano before? : yep...this is my third year

If so...what'd you think / : It rocks!!!!!

If not....what made you decide to join?

What's your biggest fear going into Nano 2007??? Forgetting "real life" and failing my exams in december

How can the rest of Chapel HIll help you with this? Well, tell me to write. adn then, make me stop! I sometimes feel the need to write 3000 words a day instead of the even 1667. This is good for Nano, but problematic for my life-as-a-student. Keep me grounded, folks!!!!!!!

Now, it's your turn!! Fill out the above questions, or make up your own. Then, check back and (1) meet other people (2) see what we're up to in the next few weeks!!!

----------
"On this journey that you're making, there'll be answers that you seek,
and it's you who'll climb the mountain; It's you who'll reach the peak!"

How many of you guys are UNC kids?

Please tell me I'm not alone in struggling with tests, homework, AND writing a novel.... hehe

If anyone else is interested in creating a little sub-group of UNC students we could try to meet on campus sometimes, perhaps have group dinners at lenoir? or at least complain to eachother how if only the teachers would understand why they don't have our full attention this month! ;-)
Nanowrimo Experience

Is this your first year doing Nanowrimo? 3rd? 5th?

How are you feeling at this point?

Here's a place to combine experiences, share concerns, and provide moral support as we get closer to start date (and then try to push through!)

This is my 3rd year...and i'm more nervous than I've ever been before (go figure that one). not quite sure why, though.
Plots/Ideas

I thought what with almost being within the 24 hour countdown until November and all this madness starts, that it'd be nice to have a thread in which to get ideas/plots out there, as well as ask for any help if it's needed.

So I'll start!

Basics: I'm writing a story called "Interlock". It's probably going to turn out as being set in the near future (2050 or even sooner) on planet Earth. The title comes from a new hallucinatory drug (in the story) also called Interlock. The basic idea behind this hook is that interlock is drug taken intramuscularly by two (or more? Unsure if I'm going to go there) individuals at a time, (this is where it gets kinda surreal/supernatural) after which the two people experience a shared hallucination. I'm hoping to show this by having different sections of the book be reality while other sections are 'trips', and as the story goes onward the two start to blend together. It's going to at least dabble in horror, and I think I'm going to add a bit of supernatural aspects to the story, and to the drug itself. The main character is probably going to be named Gabriel, and will be somewhere between a high school senior and a college sophomore. I'm sorely tempted to put him in school at Miskatonic (anyone who is unsure of what I'm talking about, it's a fictional school of H.P Lovecraft's; a setting used in many of his stories. Anyone who knows what I'm talking about- High five!) but I feel like it's important for me to set him in either a real school/area, or at least one I come up with myself. I'm still working on sub-plots (I don't want it just to be a whole long thing about this one drug 'cause I'll definitely get fed up with it, not to mention how any readers will feel!).

Uncertainties (A few thoughts I've jotted down):
1) Have some sort of system where instead of having a literal drug that is injected, people start popping up as "Carriers" of it, and other people inject blood/some sort of body fluid from the carrier into themselves to get the high- the catch is, it's highly likely that they'll become a carrier themselves (while at the same time addicting them to the 'drug'), thus it begins its spread throughout the city/country/world. The catch is, it only gives a high when passed on to a non-carrier (This is a bit zombie-esque, but I think it's a pretty original take on the idea.) This allows me to play with ideas like forced injection, what happens when a region runs out or runs low on non-carriers, etc.

2) The drug is an infernal creation, somehow originally coming from hell or some other sort of supernatural source.

Anyway, those are my first ideas, I'd LOVE to get some NaNoMail feedback, (remember this is my first time really trying to put together a piece of writing of this caliber) Thanks for any thoughts/criticisms/ideas!!

Still working on:
-Characters!
-Sub-plots
-Exact setting (it'll be somewhere in the US, somewhere on the east coast.)

-MK
----------
Heaven or Hell? Let's ROCK!

Kick Off Party

The time has come to plan a date for our wonderful Kick Off Party!

For those of you new to Nanowrimo, this is a "get to know you / get psyched" event where I hand out free stuff, we all meet each other, and we share ideas for surviving through the next month. It's usually tons of fun.

In terms of dates, I present a few options :

OPTION #1 - The weekend of October 26-28. We could do Friday afternoon, Saturday Afternoon, Sunday Afternoon...or a night if you want to be adventurous.

OPTION #2 - Monday Night October 29th

OPTION #3 - The day of November 1st (Nano will have started, but we can hold a Kick-Off Write-in).

Our Kick-Off will most likely be at the Caribou on West Franklin Street (Across from Granville Towers, near the Ben and Jerry's).
----------
"On this journey that you're making, there'll be answers that you seek,
and it's you who'll climb the mountain; It's you who'll reach the peak!"

United States :: North Carolina :: Chapel Hill

You can also search for it - it's titled Nanowrimo - Chapel Hill.
